This is Schmidt's first album since moving back home to Austin; the first to draw off the abundant wealth of Austin musicians, with the likes of Lloyd Maines on lap steel, Guy Forsyth on harmonica, Michael Longoria (Patti Griffin's band) on drums, and Bruce Hughes (Bob Schneider's band) on bass. "Parables & Primes" is lushly orchestrated, yet still sparse, with graceful touches of accordion, violin, cello, organ, trumpet, mandolin, and of course, some sweet harmonies. They make for a velvety backdrop - but it's the songs themselves, their messages and their poetry, that sit front and center on Schmidt's records, and this one is no exception.

A SOLID Surprise. . . .......2006-12-08

Jimmy Riley is a veteran Jamaican roots singer who made his name through recording with 60's groups, as a young singer, The Sensations and the Uniques. The Sensations were of the virtual run-of-the-mill type of groups to be found in Jamaica at the time. However, a great deal of Riley's fame and popularity was attained in singing for the legendary Uniques which included himself and (amongst others) Lloyd Charmers and the late Slim Smith. As a solo artist, Riley also gained attention by recording the MASSIVE Love & Devotion which, even to this day (and perhaps for the rest of his days), keeps him popular and in demand around the world.

Fast forward to his son, a current work in process, the well indoctrinated and well prepared Tarrus Riley. Tarrus' style is not really anywhere near his father's in terms of being a pure singer, although he somewhat resembles his father's vocals when he does go the route of pure singer with a healthy and thunderous earthy type of singing. The style is somewhat similar to a MUCH more laid back Fantan Mojah who Tarrus sometimes sounds like in that he combines pure chanting with pure singing and even pure djaying.

Parables is Tarrus' big league debut and he has come armed with a backing group that any established artist could hope for. Working the boards on Parables is none other than Dean Fraser. The legendary arranger/producer/saxman who has produced much material for artists such as Sizzla, Prince Malachi, Anthony B and most notably, Luciano. Parables starts from such a high place, just on paper alone and the album really lives up to the paper expectations.

Check the title track! The title track is SUPREMELY clever track where Tarrus shows off his songwriting ability in connecting various folk tales and nursery rhymes with todays current happenings and problems. It takes a second to actually getting (and a visit to the dictionary to look up PARABLES) a grasp on the point of the song, but Parables is without a doubt one of the finest written reggae tunes you'll hear all year long!

Equally as crucial is the opener, System Set (Willie Lynch Syndrome) a further explanation of Riley's writing style which is somewhat akin to a more and spiritual and religious version of what Tanya Stephens does in holding a vibe in a story type of mode which means every songs doesn't deviate and are all ABOUT SOMETHING. System Set goes rather nicely over the same riddim over which Luciano voice his epic Give Praise. Also check Micro Chip which is a song explaining the ills of modern society, most notably the internet (and I hope he approves of me giving his album a good review); check the MASSIVE One Two Order which is preceeded by a nice Rastafari Nyabinghi order chanting, Grounation style! One Two Order is a big big track definitely.

I'm also quite fond of Africa Awaits, the only track here which I had previously heard from the Reflections riddim, one of the strongest tracks on the refashioned side of that once glorious riddim. Check the two combinations, most notably Family with Della Manley on a well powerful track, the other is a combination with songwriter Duane Stephenson (who wrote Jah Cure's MASSIVE True Reflections) on the song which is forever growing on me; and I'm also recommending Lion Paw. Lion Paw is the self affirming Rastafarian tune which this album needed, over a strong Nyah drum backed riddim (which is somewhat reminiscent of the Binghi Drum riddim of a few years back.

All that being said. . . The best tune here is WITHOUT A DOUBT the John Legend remake Stay With You. The song is easily amongst the finest love anthems I've EVER heard and it might prove to be Tarrus' signature song. Showing throughout an album that his own pen is just as strong, I typically don't enjoy the remakes too much, but if you don't like Stay With You, then ignore the rest of this review!

Overall, I'm not only stamping a well deserved seal of recommendation on Tarrus Riley's Parables, I'm also thinking about modifying my Best Reggae Albums of 2006 list to include it! The album was somewhat of a welcome surprise as before looking into it and researching it, I knew about it, but had very little interest in it. However, after wearing the disc out I can say definitely it is amongst the finest reggae releases of the year. Although, Tarrus Riley's name might not roll off the tongues of reggae fans as quickly as some of his peers, more material such as Parables (both the album and ESPECIALLY the song) it will only be a matter of time.

Excellent performances of lesser-known Martinu.......2003-12-02

This disc collects digital recordings from the late 1980s of five lesser-known works of Bohuslav Martinu: the Rhapsody of 1929, the Sinfonia concertante of 1932, the Concerto grosso of 1937, the Overture of 1953 and The Parables, from 1958, the year before the composer's death.

The Rhapsody is very much in the realm of the works Martinu was writing for large orchestra in the late 1920s: Half-Time and La Bagarre, for example. It's a rhythmically dense, heavily orchestrated and slightly over-the-top 12 minutes, but it's also fun. Occasionally signs of Martinu's mature concerto grosso-type style poke through the textures, but this isn't by any means a mature work.

The Sinfonia concertante for two orchestras is a major step forwards. It's a largely neoclassical work in the traditional four-movement symphonic form: a rhythmic, dynamic first movement, a scherzo with driving rhythms, a slow movement and a vigorous finale. Perhaps there is too much of an emphasis in motoric rhythms and dissonance in this work (though it's 100% tonal)--I found the style a little unremitting, particularly as the slow movement (unusually for Martinu) lacks a good tune.

The Concerto grosso is, again, a major advance on the previous work. It's written--like the more famous Tre ricercari--for a chamber orchestra with two pianos, and is in a fast-slow-fast format. The driving rhythms are a little less aggressive than in the Sinfonia concertante, the melodies more prominent (particularly at the beginning and end of the slow movement), the harmony less dissonant. This is clearly the mature Martinu style, and even if the first movement tends to be a bit predictable, the subsequent movements just get better and better the longer they go on.

The Overture is just an occasional piece. It sounds like it wasn't meant to be very serious: the melodies and rhythms are, frankly, rather cheesy, and the development of the material is unsubtle. However, it's put across with a level of panache that at least negates some of my criticisms of it.

The final work on the disc, The Parables, is a bona fide masterpiece, the only one on the disc. This is in Martinu's full-blown rhapsodic late style, and is a wonderful fount of lyrical Eastern European melody, beautiful harmonies and delightful orchestration. The finale, with its repeating drum rhythms, is one of the most exhilharating pieces in Martinu's output.

Of these works, only The Parables can be described as essential Martinu, but none of the pieces on this disc should disappoint a listener with an interest in this sort of music. Jiri Belohlavek is surely one of best conductors of Czech music today, and directs consistently fine performances, though I still marginally prefer the outstanding Karel Ancerl in The Parables.

ok ok i've only heard one Powderfinger song which is called "Grave Concern". It was on a muti-artist disc put out
in 1994 by Kahlua liquor and Juice magazine.This is one of the most powerfully sonic songs i have ever heard.Crank up your speakers and run the cats ,dogs and roaches out the house.It doesnt get too much better than that. Too Bad, that was a great cd by Kahlua and Juice Magazine they should re release it. THATS ALL.

Brilliant - This is a Real Poet.......2006-11-22

Listening to this collection of songs by Danny Schmidt reminded me of the first time I heard Leonard Cohen. He is a master-craftsman of a songwriter. His melodies are haunting like the best mountain ballads. Try listening to the song 'Stained Glass' on this cd and not feel that you have heard the work of a new brilliant poet.

Best of the Best.......2006-09-28

Just saw Danny perform live in Tulsa this past weekend and bought this CD; it's been in my player ever since. I suppose I'm just due for a long spell of fitting my brain around some hearty wordcraft and smooth picks and licks. There's nothing else to say about this musician other than that he makes you want music, want and love it more than ever. So glad I didn't miss him!

Stained Glass.......2006-02-25

This collection of songs shows musical capability in various styles. Fine guitar work and a melodic, clear and acurate voice. The lyrics contain imagery and feelings that bring great power to this music. Danny Schmidt is unique in many ways. It's fun to me to find that I cannot categorize his music. I titled these comments "Stained Glass" because that was the first song of his that I heard on the radio, and I wanted to hear more.

This album is a strong following to Make Right the Time, which is a great album on its own. Danny Schmidt has a rare combination of amazing guitar work, solid voice and moving lyrics. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who has a love of music.

The essence of music........2005-12-30

I live in Austin- the Live Music Capital of the World. On any given night, you can wander downtown and hear block after block of venue after venue playing genre after genre of music. But one of the most memorable musical experiences I've had since I made Austin my home is witnessing Danny Schmidt perform for an audience of less than 100 in someone's back yard.

Danny deserves much greater notoriety for his talent. This album is honestly one of the best collections of songs I have run across in years. It makes me sad that it has one customer review. Two, now... It doesn't seem to bother him in the least that he doesn't have fame, fortune and glory, but it bothers ME. It is evident that Danny Schmidt truly cares about the music that he crafts, and finally getting to listen to him play live was a real and true pleasure... His insight into love and politics and hell, even his battle with cancer, is fresher than most of what I come across. His music is real. It is thoughtful. It is gentle. It inspires genuine emotion. I highly recommend this album, and his others.

Beautiful From Start to Finish.......2005-01-17

Seeds has put out beatiful music in "Parables, Prayers, and Songs". The singers' ability to harmonize with one and other in perfect pitch on every song lends a haunting beauty to this folk/accoustic music. Scott also has a uncanny ability to pick up nearly any stringed instrument and play it as if he grew up practicing on it for his entire life. "Parables, Prayers, and Songs" packs a range of emotions, from the joyful and energetic to the somber and thoughtful. This is an album that may certainly remain on repeat in your CD player for days on end.

Essential.......2006-09-03

This performance of Martinu's Fifth Symphony was the first to be recorded, in 1955, and it is still the best. Although the recording is mono, the clarity and balance of the playing by this orchestra, and the complete identification with the music by the conductor, set it quite apart. Later recordings of this symphony conducted by Ancerl are available, including a stereo version with the Toronto Orchestra: while that is the best stereo version, this earlier version still keeps first place. No version I've come across yet recorded by any other orchestra can touch it. The slower temp for the last movement here adds excitement and depth, even if it is slower than indicated in the score. The other three movement works on this CD are recorded in stereo and are equally wonderful performances, and a mono recording of the Memorial to Lidice is also included. One of the best CDs ever.

This performance of the Fifth Symphony has been reissued in another coupling in the Supraphon 'Golden Ancerl'series with a wonderful version of the Symphony No 6. I am not a sound expert, but to my ears the earlier CD with the Parables and Frescoes reproduces with more clarity and is the one to go for, though the Golden One is good if you can't find the earlier one.

Martinu at his most marvelous.......2002-01-19

This may be the single most essential Martinu disc I have, with the unbeatable CzPO/Ancerl combo tackling several of his orchestral masterpieces. The sound, from the 1950s, is either good mono or adequate early stereo.

The 5th Symphony is the longest piece here. It is a more emotionally ambiguous work than Martinu's previous symphonies, harder to characterize in a word or two, with an unusual 3-movement structure and no real slow movement as such. Stick with it, though, as it culminates in a long, rhythmically insistent, pounding finale (shades of Beethoven's 7th) which may be Martinu's single most impressive symphonic movement.

"Frescoes of Piero della Francesca" is a richly orchestrated, kaleidoscopic piece which stands in the very front rank of Martinu's huge output. "Parables" is composed along the same lines as "Frescoes," although it's a little more modernistic and dissonant. "Memorial to Lidice" is a grim lament inspired by the Nazi destruction of a Czech village during World War II. If you haven't yet discovered this most lovable of twentieth-century composers, this disc is a good place to start.

Not bad, for early '60s mono.......2002-04-13

Ansermet's readings of Martinu are passionate and lush, and the Suisse Romande orchestra sounds pleasantly physical and rough-textured...the vinyl mono sound (is that a touch of surface hiss?) captures the nasal oboes and scratchy strings much better than most ultra-smooth modern recordings. So, the disc's a keeper unless you're crazy about ultra-pure sound.
