Chris Parkinson's melodeons crank out the tunes, John Skelton's flutes and raspy bombardes give them soul and color, Roger Wilson's fiddle tells the tale, and Ged Foley's percussive guitar chords help make this English foursome essential listening for anyone looking for the sound of England and the regions around it. October Song stands in stark contrast to some of the House Band's earlier works (which were full of moody darkness and sad, sad songs), presenting lively traditional dance tunes in creative original settings. The group's take on the Kentucky fiddle tune "Rock in the Mountain" is splendid. The hornpipe "Three Rusty Swords" and the folk chestnut "The Dusty Miller" are given lively turns. Not that the band has shied away from the dark side of the ballad tradition. The setting of "Seven Yellow Gypsies" (a.k.a. "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy") is demonic, with Wilson's foot taps setting a heartbeat pace for a spare, foreboding rendition of this tale of doom. --Louis Gibson

If you can gag your way past the album title, this is a most pleasant collection of beloved classical piano pieces that actually is relaxing, I suppose.

        Album Description

        Collection of early works and her first vocal compositions, originally released on LPs in the 1970s and early 1980s on her own Wizard Records. "One of my earliest pieces, `Hear What I Feel', was a self-exploratory, sensory-deprivation experimental work, designed to help me discover new sounds, delve into psychological aspects, as well as communicate with the audience on a pre-verbal level of awareness. After spending an hour in isolation with my eyes taped shut and not touching anything with my hands, I was led our into the performance space where my assistant had placed a variety of substances in six small glass dishes. As I touched the material, I tried to give an immediate vocal response to what I felt both emotionally and physically, without the benefit of visual information. I expected the shock of bringing a solitary state of mind into the heightened awareness of a performance situation to intensify my experience, and the poignancy of my `prepared' state to affect the audience. The sounds are presented here in their raw state; it is truly an experimental work with no intentional musical implications or designs. `Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation' explores the color spectrum of a single pitch. Circular Song was inspired by the circular breathing technique of horn players. `Des Accords pour Teeny', an exploration of multi-phonic technique or choral singing, was dedicated to Teeny Duchamp. In much of my early work I dealt with sound as a physical presence, sculpting it, building up layers in complex constructions, letting the flow of thought and the visualization of sonic gestures direct my studio art. Voice Is the Original Instrument was both a statement of purpose and a manifesto as, through various experiments and explorations, I tried to rediscover the basic function of the voice as the first means of expression as well as to release untapped sonic material. As I gave my classically trained voice its freedom, letting it direct me toward new places and ideas, I developed what was a unique vocabulary and used those sounds to score an orchestra of layered voices."

        Irish pianist John O'Conor has eloquent phrasing, and impeccable technique. And this album is proof of that...21 beautiful songs, played as only a pianist of the highest caliber can play them. This album is very highly recommended. You don't have to be a classical connossieur to enjoy it...I most certainly am not. A lot of the pieces are very familiar, and as you hear them, you may find yourself saying "Oh, I know that song". This is the album that opened me up to more classical works, and since aquiring this, I have purchased more works by the composers on this album.

        I have been a fan of the wonderful pianist John O'Conor since I first heard him live here in St. Louis. It was an unforgettable recital and I bought as many CD's of his that he had out at the time and have continued to add to my collection. Mr. O'Conor has a marvelously lyrical way of phrasing which seems to be almost like singing at times. This CD, Autumn Songs, is a great favorite of mine and I've given it as a present to several of my friends. I am a piano teacher and often play pieces from Mr. O'Conor's oeuvre to show a student how a great pianist would perform. This CD has such beautiful selections, and I especially love Mr. O'Conor's interpretation of "Duetto" from Mendelssohn's Song Without Words and "Warum?" and "Romance in F-sharp" by Schumann. Any music lover will enjoy this gorgeous CD. Give yourself a great gift and buy it.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing potpourri with abysmal Moonlight Sonata.......2004-08-25

        Hungarian pianist Péter Nagy has made quite a few recordings for a number of labels, but I found this 1987 Naxos potpourri rather disappointing. The end of the CD is the best part: Nagy gives a rousing version of Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz" which shows off his ability as a pianist to good advantage. But a lot of the other material on this CD is, in my opinion, not well done. The Adagio sostenuto from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" sounds anything but romantic; this is not the moon shining on a Swiss lake, as the poet Rellstab thought, it is more like the nextdoor neighbours hammering away to get their woodframe house finished. A comparison of Nagy's version with Rudolf Buchbinder on Warner Classics was like being in two different worlds: Buchbinder sounds like he really believes in Beethoven's music, Nagy sounds like he is playing it because he has to. The same is more or less true of all the slower pieces on this disc, which come over accurately but without real emotion. It's only with the faster, more showy pieces that Nagy begins to get more convincing, but that is not enough to make this CD a winner. The recording quality is good, but not as good as on Volume 1 of the same series.
