The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals--a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans"--you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is. (The 2006 reissue adds six previously unreleased bonus tracks.) --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Boring bar music.......2007-04-12
I bought the CD because I was looking for piano music and this one was highly recommended by reviewers. Well, it sure is one boring piece of work! I somehow missed reference on the music style. So, to you all who may be doing the same mistake: it is a blues music for bars. Go out Friday night and you'll have a great chance to hear the same music: the never-ending stream of notes to make you feel unworried and thirsty. Nothing great nor "legendary" about it really. It has something specifically American about it that I find difficult to relate to: too common, too simple, too simpleminded, too shortcoming. Sorry, but using piano for instrument doesn't make the music great; the melodies could have been played on harmonica or accordion instead and sold as folk-music.
Rythm and Blues Master.......2006-11-26
Somewhere in the mid-eighties Dr John released plays Mac Rebennack. Where a lot of the good doctor's studio work was at times plagued by mediocrity that release was suddenly a more than solid effort. Mac Rebennack is of course the Night Tripper himself, doctor John was suddenly playing out of his "own" songbook, although a lot of the compositions here are actually originated from some one else's pen. Plays Mac Rebennack gives you the good Doctor at his most pure, just the man and his rolling and funky piano, his rough and gruff voice and a great assortment of songs and instrumentals. The original release focussed on instrumental work, the vol. 2 companion of the re-release with outtakes from the original sessions focuses more on vocal outings of Dr. John from that time.
Plays Mac Rebennack was a highly intimate late night album; the outtake sessions featured here in vol. 2 are much in the same vein. This is not a bad thing at all, listening to this album one can only conclude that the Doctor is much more powerful and compelling when playing all by his lonesome. The album features a lot of different shades, from uninhibited joy to dark melancholy. With tracks like Marie La Veau some of the Night Trippers mystic creep into this album, Boxcar Boogie is a bar room brawl, Touro Infirmary is a strong adaptation of the familiar st. James, Come Rain or Shine is spine chilling.
Every single selection here is played in the Doctor's signature style, highly indebted to Professor Longhair yet very recognisable as Mac Rebennack. Doctor John has long been one of the most eccentric individuals in Rhythm and Blues; Plays Mac Rebennack shows us he's a master. There's not a note to many, during the record he plays his strengths en weaknesses very well. This release and the re-release of the original album were long overdue.
Enjoyable Dr. John.......2006-08-18
This CD features really good blues piano. Sometimes soft and quiet and at other times quite strident. For me,this is really the way the piano should be in this genre. Dr John's vocals (not on all tracks) adds to the authenticity.
Fantastic album.......2006-03-23
A great way to revisit classic Dr. John. Remastered for amazing sound with a TON of bonus tracks...this is a fantastic album for any Dr. John fan or someone looking to get into his stuff. Definitely pick it up!

Great music that brings joy to the soul..........1999-10-13
If one was allowed to have only 10 CDs and no more, this would have to be one of them. The fresh, clean and raw talent of an early Allen Toussaint (circa late 1950's) cuts like a knife and makes any listener a lover of New Orleans/Toussaint music.
If you like rhythm and blues you will like this........1998-10-02
One can't not like this album. The only question is just how much you'll love it. This is very up-beat music. Maybe I should just tell you a true story that will indicate my love of Allen Toussaint's music.
I first heard "Whirlaway" in 1958 while lying in an Army hospital bed, very ill. I wanted that song and it took me 40 years of searching before I found it. Is that liking a song or what? I have it now and out of 27 tracks on this disc there isn't one I don't like.
This is "feel good" music with a piquant creole flavor that could only have come from New Orleans and a great talent like Allen Toussaint.
Thanks Allen, Gary

The Emperor of the World.......2003-04-11
The Emperor of the World. The baddest motorscooter, the Greatest Boy-Child ever conceived at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. K-Doe acknowledged that Mother-In-Law, along with the Star Spangled Banner and, perhaps, Amazing Grace, were the only songs that would be standing at the end of time. But K-Doe was a humble man. All 29 of these songs will be there at the end, including the alternate takes. Any other questions? Burn, K-Doe, Burn.

When Jelly Roll Morton recorded this music in 1939 and 1940, the "Jazz Age" that he represented was rapidly becoming a subject of historical curiosity. Morton had already recorded extensively for the Library of Congress, reminiscences as well as music, but there's nothing stale about these solo piano and band tracks, with Morton showing another dimension of himself as a laconic singer of traditional blues. The solo piano sessions find him reaching back to the New Orleans of his youth, playing ragtime and bordello specialties as well as a superbly relaxed version of his "King Porter Stomp." The songs are fascinating, including "Winin' Boy Blues," "Mamie's Blues" (which Morton introduces as "the first blues I no doubt heard in my life"), and "Buddy Bolden's Blues," the last with a cast of characters that includes the legendary trumpeter. There are also 12 band tracks, with Red Allen, Albert Nicholas, and Zutty Singleton among those joining the pianist. At their best these songs are fine expressions of Morton's music, with "Sweet Substitute" and "My Home Is in a Southern Town" showing the composer as a still-vital musical force. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music........2006-08-14
Great cd especially for Morton's beautiful warm vocal. No chance to listen something similar in current music. Tracks 1 - 13 are piano solos with Morton's vocal (around half tracks) and rest tracks are Morton's hot six and hot seven. Great is trumpeter Red Allen too. Especially on SWEET SUBSTITUE, GET THE BUCKET and MY HOME IS IN A SOUTHERN TOWN.
And super vocal by Morton again and again.
His Home Was A Southern Town.......2005-12-09
Did anyone (don't remember) mention the excellence of the transfers and the liner notes? Steven Lasker is a hero - just compare (if you are a fanatic like I am) to the Classics issue of this material. And Animule Ball is a wonderful bonus. SOME of the band tracks ARE wonderful - particularly Dirty Dirty Dirty, Swinging The Elks and Mama's Got A Baby (all from the last session; what a pity there was to be no more). Claude Jones' replacement of Joe Britton on trombone, and the absence of Eddie Williams' alto sax help enormously. Dirty Dirty Dirty was the best writing Morton had done in years and Mama's Got A Baby shows that in addition to Jazz, Morton also invented R + B. Of course, the solo tracks are classics; have been since the day they were issued. I couldn't live without The Crave, Michigan Water, Don't You Leave Me Here - the incredible recording of King Porter...Oh let's face it, I couldn't live without any of it. And you shouldn't either.
Mr. Jelly Lord.......2005-10-12
This CD compiles Morton's last commercial sessions: a solo piano date (actually 2) from 1939, and 3 dates, all of them using pretty much the same personnel, from January 1940, all for the General label. By far the most impressive sides are the piano recordings; most of these are remakes of tunes he had recorded in the 1920s. Slow and medium tempos dominate, and he sings on some of them, too - as only Morton could. WININ' BOY, BUDDY BOLDEN'S BLUES, MAMIE'S BLUES (an absolute masterpiece), and MICHIGAN WATER BLUES are all standouts. The small band sides feature Red Allen on trumpet, Albert Nicholas (cl), Eddie Williams (as) among others, and most contain Morton vocals, but these sides just don't come across as well as the earlier solo tracks. Still, this CD collects the culminating work of one of the great jazz pioneers, and is highly recommended.
We Are So Fortunate.......2004-05-02
What can one really add to the previous excellent reviews? So many great jazzmen died so young....Bix, Teschemacher, Fats, Parker, and "Jelly". How fortunate we are to have these final superb recordings by this flawed but incredible person.
The audio quality is excellent, so we are able to hear how his early recordings of some of his most well-known pieces should have sounded. Although in poor health at the time of these recordings, his playing is as exciting and inventive as ever. Truly one of jazz's giants.
a treasury in the history of jazz piano playing.......2001-08-23
How could a Jelly Roll Morton piano solo session receive less than five stars?Like Duke,Monk,Earl Hines,James P.,he was one of the most talented pianists and composers in the jazz history. The first part of this cd consist in a complete solo session by Mr Ferdinand Joseph LaMenthe (1885-1941),a creole from New Orleans who proclaimed himself as the inventor of jazz, blues and stomp;megalomaniac, irritable, insufferable for those who worked with him,Sweet Papa Jelly Roll is truly one of jazz greatest geniuses. These sessions, recorded one year after the marathon-like "Library of Congress" recordings, are among his best, mostly for the solos. He excells playing ragtime ("sporting house rag",a tune he recorded in 1924 under the title "perfect rag",an exceptionnal version of Joplin's "original rags",maybe the most beautiful with Paul Lingle's version,a magnificent spanish-tinged tune called "the crave","the naked dance",a tune he used to play in the whorehouses, and "King Porter stomp",a masterpiece),and he excelles too playing blues ("Michigan water blues","don't you leave me here",the poignant "winin' boy blues",and another masterpiece,as Mr Tutt said,"Mamie's blues",which was recorded in 1940 by Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet under the title "2:19 blues").The second part of the cd,the band sessions, were recorded in 1940.The personnel is absolutely superlative:Red Allen,Albert Nicholas,Wellman Braud,Zutty Singleton,Claude Jones.Again,a bunch of masterpieces: the rare "sweet substitue"(listen to Sammy Price and Leon Redbone's versions),"Why"(another beautifully melancholic tune),"big lip blues"(listen to Jelly Roll saying "I'm gettin' drunk" in the middle of the tune),and "if you knew".Maybe Sweet Papa Jelly Roll wasn't the inventor of jazz, blues and stomp, surely he was a lyer and a mythomaniac, but clearly he was one of jazz most important figures,an immense pianist, composer, and a great singer, and I'm sure you'll enjoy these last recordings.

Even better than I expected........2004-07-13
I wanted the song 'Didn't wanna do it' because it's a solid, fun, bouncy rocker....a great song!! I was kind of bummed out that I had to spend 40 bucks to buy a 2 disc collection of a group that I didn't know a whole heck of a lot about....just to get one song! I'm sure glad I did. This is an excellent set. It's so good that it gets a 5-star rating, mainly becuase I was surprised that there were as many good songs as there were. If you like the 50's vocal R&B sound, you need to grab this one.
Btw, I'm really glad to finally be spinning 'Didn't wanna do it'!
SOME GOOD STUFF!!!.......1998-10-07
The Spiders were New Orleans only male vocal group in the 50's...CHUCK and CHICK CARBO were the group leaders and songs like "Witchcraft" (later done by Elvis), "I didn't want to do it" and "Slippin' In" are classics. The group is backed by Dave Batholomew's band on all the cuts and if you love early R&B. This is a must. The price is hefty, but the music is worth it. This is a solid dose of the GOOD STUFF from the 50's by a legendary group. THE SPIDERS were fabulous.

Customer Reviews:
The stuff of legends.......2006-11-01
This was the band that was put together to play during intermission for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre on the CBS radio network. Jimmie Noone was the original clarinettist chosen to participate. He died unexpectedly and was replaced by Omer Simeon. Darnell Howard then replaces Simeon for the eight titles from 1945. Minor Hall replaces Alton Redd on drums for all but four of the numbers. Mutt Carey is the trumpet player and plays hot whether open or muted. This is his definitive recording. Buster Wilson is on piano, Bud Scott on guitar, and Ed Garland handles the bass chores. Ory, of course, is on trombone and smears, slides, and tailgates in the same way he did back in the twenties when he recorded with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Ory was an innovator, a giant in the history of jazz music.
Nesuhi Ertegun, who later co-founded Atlantic records, was so enamoured with this band that he recorded them in a state of the art studio and started his own Crescent label to release the recordings.
The sound quality is really superb and the musicians were clearly inspired. There are Ory originals, traditionals, and songs of the day all treated in the inimmitable Ory way. His Creole Jazz Band was to undergo personnel changes right through the fifties, yet the sound and attack of the band never changed. There were wonderful recordings for the Good Time Jazz label as well as a few for Verve.
This may be the Kid Ory recording that is essential for your collection. Great tunes, great recording, and it is the stuff of legends.
