5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD for the last 2 years and so unexpected!.......2004-04-11

I loved this CD - Saw Jez Lowe live 2 yrs ago and liked his lyrics, delivery, humor. Bought the Live at the Davy Lamp CD and discovered the Bad Pennies. Just a fantastic combination. They are more than a back up bank-- and add a great deal of warmth and vibrancy.

This 2 CD set became my favorite instantly. Lovely clear, crisp voices. The songs are often 20th century topics with traditional roots to the instrumentation. Many earworms...They are often running thru my head. A nice combination ballads and uptempo to the cuts on these CDs.

Brought them into work and they were a hit with my co-workers. If you are a traditional folkie I'm sure you will enjoy this disc. And my non-traditional folk music friends have enjoyed it also. It's still my favorite. Only problem has been bursting out singing along full volume when the earphones are plugged in.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best Place to Start with Jez.......2002-10-30

I had never heard of Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, despite twenty years of hanging around on the fringes of folk concerts and so on. Then, last Easter, I saw him at an Australian Blues festival, where he was somewhat inappropriately buried on the bill, in the smallest and least prestigious venue. To cut a long story short, he and the Bad Pennies absolutely stole the show.

They utterly charmed me, and I immediately went and bought this double live CD afterwards. The CD is simply one of the best live folk concerts we are ever likely to have committed to disc. There are numerous songs that just go straight into the memory bank, with catchy choruses, wonderful melodies and clever lyrics imbued with a sense of a traditional way of life that is fast passing away in England. And there are few writers who chronicle this better than Jez Lowe.

Beautiful songs like "Black Diamonds", "Old Durham Gaol", "High Part of the Town", "Tom-Tom" have seamlessly passed into my household's singalongs as we prepare our evening meal, or when we go on roadtrips.

Most folk music from the British Isles that we hear tends to derive from Ireland or Scotland, but Jez is not from those traditions at all. While he has one foot well based in the glorious Northern Folk traditions of England, it has also become clear to me with repeated listening that he also has a link to the music-hall traditions of the North, some of which have turned up in the music of many great English bands over the years, not the least of which were the Beatles.

Jez Lowe has the rare knack of writing modern songs on modern topics that you feel sure must be traditional songs, even though you have never heard them before. Why there are not more artists covering his songs is a bit of a mystery to me, as they are full of hooks and often quite jaunty.

Jez is also a great entertainer on stage, and his band are pretty special too. There are a swag of older CDs to get, but this is a great compilation, with a good atmosphere, quite a lot of variety, and an excellent CD-ROM enhanced site on the second disc (with lyrics, photos and the like).

A good value introduction to a great (and under appreciated) artist. My personal find (and most played CD) of the year.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT PICK AS AN INTRODUCTION, OR FOR AN ESTABLISHED FAN.......2002-06-30

This 2-disc set from the great English singer-songwriter Jez Lowe is a superb collection of some of his finest songs -- there are classics from his entensive catalogue here, as well as some newer selections. The incarnation of the Bad Penneys that accompany him here make for a fine band, ably backing him, doing grand justice to all of the tunes. The recording is excellent as well -- the music and vocals are clear, and the 'live' atmosphere is present but not overbearing, a tricky balance in concert recordings. Additionally, there's a wealth of extra material available on one of the discs by way of the CD-ROM drive on your compuuter -- lots of photos, lyrics, and other information to keep you busy.

Lowe is one of the finest songwriters to emerge from the UK in our time -- it's a pity (and a genuine surprise) that he's not more widely known. If you've never experienced his work, this is a fine place to start -- and trust me, you'll want to explore further. Beyond this recording, I can heartily recommend TENTERHOOKS, as well as BEDE WEEPS -- but everything he's done is of the highest quality.
