Editorial Reviews
Scott Jordan, Gambit Weekly, April 23, 2002
Guitar Gumbo sounds pure and natural, just like the music on his fine offering from the New Orleans virtuoso.

Product Description
Fingerstyle guitar versions of some of the great New Orleans piano styles, with understated vocal and guitar that swings! Rankin blends together New Orleans style rhythm & blues and jazz, latin, folk, blues, and standards, as well as a dazzling array of original instrumentals. He uses many different guitars to create a palette of different guitar styles, including 12 strings, a custom 7 string archtop, a National resonator, custom 6 strings, and a classical guitar, and also plays harmonica in a neck rack and sings. He is well known for his guitar arrangements of New Orleans piano R & B syles.

4 out of 5 stars Pass the hot sauce...........2006-07-11

Ironically recorded months before the hurricane Katrina disaster as part homage to one of TP's favorite places on the planet, this CD is an Americana exploration, and experimental Telecaster proving ground. A real guitar driven "gumbo" of musical styles and tastes.

The first and arguably the best track, "Louisiana (Been Callin' Me)" deploys a sinister Congo Square hoodoo feel as Tommy Lepson further proves he is the best Hammond organ player in Washington DC and a potent blues singer to boot. The Nighthawks Mark Wenner is the engine driving this composition.

Former Principato band member Kevin McKendree (Delbert's band now) hammers a piano to pieces on Dave Kitchen's rockin' "If Love Is Blind", "They Took My Money" and the classic "Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee-o-dee". Add Pato's road rhythm section for the last few years, John Perry on bass and Joe Wells on drums and you have an air tight machine.

The requisite instrumentals that Pato fans look forward to, "Return Of The Voodoo Thing", "Tango'd Up In The Blues" and "Tipsy" sequence brilliantly as Tom quite frankly, tears it a new one. Nobody imposes his will over the wild Telecaster quite like Tom Principato.

Be careful, may topple your current guitar hero from that lofty pedestal.

      Album Description

Andrew's second CD continues his literate exploration of America's back roads and small towns. Each of the 14 songs is set in a musical style and production that vividly evokes the scenery; the spooky swamp blues of "Chemical Voodoo" set along Cancer Alley on Louisiana's Mississippi Delta, the open Dakota prairies in "A Prairie Wind/Big Sky Town", or the evocative Saturday night at the Grange Hall dance in "Shenandoah Moon". Skillfully produced with original Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member Les Thompson, this album is rich with elegant harmony vocals and exquisite arrangements. Andrew's wry charm, signature acoustic guitar style, and rich warm vocals shine throughout. Guest harmony vocalists include Terri Allard, Laurie Rose Griffith and Tom Prasada-Rao, while regular Falling Mountain friends and family such as Ralph Gordon (bass, cello) and Chas Fowler (pipes, whistles) are also well represented. Other highlights include the a cappella title track, the lush "Bargema! n", the elegant simplicity of "I Can't Understand the Moon", and the Americana drive of "A Town Called Progress".

4 out of 5 stars Where has this artist been hiding?.......2002-09-06

This collection ranges from smooth jazz to a hard hitting beat with great lead guitar sounds. The tunes are catchy, well composed, and make you want to move a little, even if you are sitting down. Several tracks focus on today's current events as the artist attempts to awaken our senses and expose our feelings. I recommend this CD to a wide range of listeners because of the variety it offers.

Don't expect no sweet stuff here. These songs are about the harder side of life. Raw, rough, and emotional.

Do expect plenty of bottleneck slide guitar and harmonica. Doc loves to play them both.

Some people say the blues makes them sad. Others say it has a comforting effect. Either way they feel better for having heard it.

So pour yourself a nice refreshing drink, pop this CD into the stereo, kick your shoes off and relax to the sound of Little Doc's blues to calm the body and soothe your soul.

The debut CD from one of the nation's most promising "story songwriters" has introduced folk fans around the world to Andrew's literate stories and vivid imagery, all wrapped in his smooth expressive tenor and standout guitar playing. The album features some of Andrew's best-loved songs, including "Dancing in the Rain" about the plight of an Iowa farm family (and the first recording with his two friends who would join forces years later to form Dang Varmints!), a love song from the Old Man Mississippi to his lady love "Atchafalaya", and "Magnolia Tree" detailing his own escape from corporate America. Other highlights include "Highland County Romp" a gorgeous guitar duet with virtuoso Seth Austen, the old-time/folk tinged "Gatlinburg", and the gentle small-town country/Americana feel of "Still Home to Me".
