As good as Hinojosa's previous albums were, this is the recording that should win her the audience that also likes Nanci Griffith and Lucinda Williams. Hinojosa writes lush, seductive melodies and brings them home with a big, confident voice. Hinojosa tackles social problems quite credibly on the English-language "Yesterday's Papers" and the Spanish-language "Noche sin estrellas," but her greatest triumphs come on seemingly simple love songs like the folk-flavored "Saying You Will," the Tejano-flavored "Esperate" and the country-flavored "I'm Not Through Loving You Yet." These plain declarations of love are delivered with apparent effortlessness, but it's no easy task to boil down complicated feelings to such natural phrases and to fit them so neatly to such enchanting tunes. If it were, "Destiny's Gate" wouldn't be such a rare achievement. --Geoffrey Himes

Destiny's Gate.......2001-08-06
If you loved "Culture Swing" and are looking for more, this CD isn't it. Tish's voice is still wondeful but the music and lyric's are more Nashville. This CD reminds me more of Mary Chapin Carpenter than the Tish I fell in love with on "Culture Swing".
What Will it Take?.......2000-12-25
As a long-time fan of Tish Hinojosa, I often find myself wondering as I listen to her incredible voice just what it will take for Tish to step up from cult heroine to superstar diva. She has most of the ingredients: bottomless talent, an enchanting voice, grace, charm and beauty. Apparently what she doesn't have is the desire to sell out. Having seen her a dozen times in concert and having heard all her music I can tell you that she deserves to be heard and to be famous. Destiny's Gate is yet another triumph for Tish. The industry reviewer felt that the country-flavored songs are this CD's strong point-I feel the opposite. I think that the best songs are the title cut, the Spanish-flavored Esperate, and the tour de force, Noche Sin Estrellas. That song is one of the most emotional she's ever done; the sheer beauty of the music and the melancholy of the lyrics will leave you stunned. Throughout the album, Tish is not constrained to stick to one theme and run with it. She does it her way and that is part of her charm as you never know what to expect. I recommend Destiny's Gate to anyone who appreciates well-written songs and a captivating voice to interpret them.
Excellent but not her best.......1999-04-11
I really like this one but it's not her best effort. Still it's definitely worth getting. You won't be wasting your money when buying this one.
