5 out of 5 stars the electric years--a rose by any other name.......2000-05-14

RPM Records of the UK has compiled Tim Rose's electric years, 1970-1972, the "Tim Rose" and "Love-A Kind Of Hate Story" albums onto 1 extraordinary disc, 20 tracks and 71 minutes playig time in all. While this compilation lacks Rose's most influential works, "Morning Dew" "Come Away Melinda" and "Hey Joe," it has so many highlights that it is the equal of his first two albums, availailable from Beat Goes On Records on the 2-on-1 "Tim Rose/Through Rose Colored Glasses" which covers his earlier acoustic period, 1966-1969. Among the highlights of "Love-A Kind" are a cover of the Beatles "(You've Got To) Hide Your Love Away" with tasteful guitar solo by former Spooky Tooth and future Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, and Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter" which Rose makes his own in a stunning 2:52 performance. The "Tim Rice" album was produced by Kinks/Who/Creation producer Shel Talmy and includes the backing band Rumplestiltskin, consisting of Alan Parker on guitar, Herbie Flowers on bass, Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards and Clem Cattini on drums, while "Love" is produced by "Dreamweaver" Gary Wright who contributes keyboards and his backing band, Wonderwheel, with the above mentioned Mick Jones on guitar, Archie Leggett on bass, and Bryson Graham on drums. Both lps are mixtures of original compositions and covers, and in the case of "Love" some contributions by Gary Wright which add to the strength of the overall album. Those who were taken by Rose in his acoustic phase, these albums are sometimes viewed as a sell-out. Others know Rose more from this later, electric phase. Truthfully, even more people are totally unfamiliar with this wonderful singer/songwriter, and would be well served by picking up both this RPM set and the BGO set, the sum of which are Rose's first four albums, comprising the bulk of this remarkable performer's body of work, and undoubtedly including all his seminal works. Strong buy recommendation for both collections. Unlike many, I favor neither phase of Rose's career over the other, choosing rather to enjoy both on the basis of their own merits.
