Amazon.com's Best of 2000

The simple truth is that Johnny Cash could read the phone book and make it compelling. At times this set sounds like a deathbed recitation rather than a collection of songs, but the man's aura and mystique carry the day. Atop Rick Rubin's spare arrangements, Cash makes every song he interprets his own. --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com

For younger generations of musicians, having their song cut by Johnny Cash must be a little like scaling the Washington Monument. On his third album for producer Rick Rubin's American label, Cash makes Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" sound like a companion classic to "I Walk the Line." He transforms U2's "One" into a sturdy testament of plainspoken faith, while he plumbs the netherworld of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" and Will Oldham's "I See a Darkness." Amid more familiar fare (including Neil Diamond's title track), the album's sing-along standout is the deadpan, down-and-out, talking blues of "Nobody." Cash's recent originals have the age-old purity of Appalachian music, while the traditional closing of "Wayfaring Stranger" offers bittersweet benediction. Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, and June Carter Cash provide vocal cameos. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars The best late Cash album.......2007-05-26

This 3rd album in the 'American' series of recordings is amongst the best things Johnny Cash has ever done. As with all the late Cash recordings there is a running thread of passionate honesty and realism that runs throughout the entire the album.

Typical of this is the opening track "I Won't Back Down". Cash is defiant on this track: "Well I know whats right, I got just one life, in a world that keeps on pushing me around, but I stand my ground and I won't back down". This track like the rest is stripped down to a bare minimum. Accoustic guitar with some extra backing vocals on the chorus is all you get, and of because of Cash's fantastic lived in voice, this works to perfection.

Its Cash's voice and the sparse arrangements on this album that make all the covers sound like they were written for him. Neil Diamonds "Solitary Man" and U2's "One" being perhaps the best examples of this. However the best track full stop is Cash's great cover of Nick Caves "The Mercy Seat". Here Cash again restates the running theme through his final albums "I am not afraid die". Full credit to producer Rick Rubin for the arrangement on this track which adds to the already powerful lyric.

I've only just purchased this and I haven't stopped playing it.

5 out of 5 stars Why didn't I buy this sooner?.......2006-07-24

There is so much postitve press for Johnny these days, that I wrote it off as hype. I was so wrong! Fans of rock, blues, folk, gospel, country, and maybe even heavy metal will all find at least one song on this release that will take their breath away and make the disc worth purchasing. The song selection is inspired, and the Heartbreakers provide respectful backup to Johnny's time-worn vocals. Notice I said "respectful", not respectable. The musicianship is stellar. The band shuffles, ambles or swaggers as the song demands. For me, the song "The Mercy Seat" is worth the cost of the cd all by itself. The lyrics are chilling poetry, the music is incredible and Johnny's interpretation of the song conveys deep emotional impact. The same goes for "I See A Darkness" and "One". I never quite understood what the song "One" was all about. When Johnny sings the lyrics, I understand. That's what makes Johnny and this cd so special: with each and every track, you will connect with what he's talking about. He makes every song REAL. "That Lucky Old Sun" sums up the sorrows of a family man, while "Nobody" is a tongue-in-cheek ballad about the pains of someone who has no one to love. Yet Johnny as narrator is equally convincing on both tracks. I really appreciate the dark and depressing passages throughout this cd, and the moments of happiness and hope shine through like sunlight through dark clouds. I highly recommend this and every other Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash cd.

On first thought, the idea of The Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Danny Boy," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head"), and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life--and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track, Cash's own "The Man Comes Around," filled with frightening images of Armageddon, the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life," you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. (This special 2003 version includes a bonus DVD with the music video for "Hurt.") --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Okay I gave it a title.......2007-07-04

The man's last effort, he gave it all he had left, you can feel it in his voice. Profound, perhaps partly because it was his last, but profound nonetheless. This CD includes his version of Trent Reznor's Hurt, a song I had hoped no one would ever condescend to cover, but the song was almost written just for him, it's haunting. In the liner note he descibes how he spent the last few months of his life working on the title track, taking longer to compose than any other song of his life, like he knew it was his last and wanted to give it his all. If you only own one Cash album, especially if, like myself, you're not a country western sort, consider this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece--And A Revelation.......2007-04-02

Having grown up in the New York area, where, in the early 1970s, country was definitely not "cool," I have taken more than thirty years to discover Johnny Cash. I am stunned by the remarkable quality of the music I have finally, belatedly, come to love. All of the American Recordings produced by Rick Rubin are fantastic, but, for me, this is the best of the lot. The title track (written by Cash) is especially memorable: it is a superb song, and is framed by Cash's eerie readings from the book of Revelations, in a world-weary voice that sounds as old as God himself. Every track here is timeless and haunting. This is a wonderful album, personal, profound, and unforgetable from start to finish. A true American classic, very highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite of the series, but great..........2007-01-09

Late last year I "discovered" the American Recordings series Cash did with R. Rubin when I heard his version of Lightfoot's "If You Could Read my Mind" online. It moved me to tears! I rushed out ahd bought V: A Hundred Highways and could not get enough of the disc. I soon added "American Recordings" and "My Mother's Hymnal" along with "IV The Man Comes Around."

Like all the albums in this series, "The Man Comes Around" is a treasure, but so far it has been my least favorite in the collection. I think some of the covers were too "mainstream pop" though executed very well. "Hurt" is of course amazing, and I did like the treatment for "In My Life" and "Bridge" - "Personal Jesus" was another strong cover but for the life of me I can't figure out why "Danny Boy" is on this disc. For me, it kind of breaks up an otherwise good album.

Still, highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars I bought it for "Hurt".......2006-06-20

I was scanning the radio channels one day and came upon Johnny Cash singing "Hurt". After hearing his somber melodious voice for a few seconds, I couldn't help but to hear the rest of the song; it was so poignant that I remember exactly where I was at that moment and what I was doing. The song isn't originally his, but it was definately made for him. Later, I heard the Nine Inch Nails version of Hurt. Johnny Cashes rendition puts them to shame. Although I purchased the CD for "Hurt", the other tracks are good as well. If you like hurt, you will like most of the other tracks. My favorite by far is "Hurt" but I never get tired of listening to "The Man Comes Around", "Give My Love to Rose", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "I Hung My Head", "In My Life" and "Sam Hall". One of the things I like about Cash is how he puts so much of his heart into his music and it's so simple with nothing more than his voice and a guitar. I'm not even a fan of country music, imagine that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-04

I have always been a fan of Johnny Cash, and nothing will ever replace the original albums, but this album is perhaps one of Cash's best albums. It offers new music with the old sound, but with a different sound. I recommend it to both Cash fans, and strangers to his music.

Album Description

At the 2004 Juno Awards Sam Roberts walked away with three major awards (Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year). Already a huge success in their Canadian homeland, Lost Highway is re-releasing We Were Born In A Flame in the United Stes with two extra tracks.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very solid debut.......2007-01-29

I bought this CD after hearing a "brother down" and "don't walk away eileen", and overall, it is very good. The album starts out with a bang as the first 6 tracks are possibly my favorite 6 songs that go in sequence on any album. He could have spread out the good songs with the not so great ones however. After the first 6, the only ones that are worth listening to are "rarefied" and "no sleep". What you do have here though is 8 very good songs that make purchasing this album worth while.

5 out of 5 stars Hope for Rock 'n Roll? / Best Rock album of 2004!.......2006-04-04

What a breath of fresh air it is to hear a young artist take such a mature and multi-layered approach to rock n' roll. Many of these songs will remind listeners of later period Kinks, or Paul Simon (lyrically). To help "round out" the more mature songs, "We Were Born In a Flame" also includes a few exceptional power pop nuggets! The song "Don't Walk Away Eileen" will perhaps remind many listeners of both John Mellencamp and the Clash simultaneously. The final result is a debut CD demonstrating a level of songwriting skill and excellent musicianship not often found in rock 'n roll over the last two decades!

Thanks for an amazing album Mr. Roberts and for proving that SMART and REAL rock 'n roll still exists in the hearts and minds of the young. In a musical wasteland where most of todays youth willingly numb their minds to the horrible sounds of a never ending supply of talentless artists, this CD will restore hope to anyone who is a fan of real rock 'n roll.

I can safely pick this release without hesitation as the best rock 'n roll album released by ANYONE in 2004.

"we've got one life to live - but we're doing it wrong" - Sam Roberts

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-03-15

While perhaps not as hard charging through the whole album as the reviews might suggest, you will find the album on your regular play list. In fact, many times I catch myself listening to other things like commercials, etc and think that reminds me of this album, I had better give it another play. You will too. No idea if Sam Roberts is a passing phase but the album will stand the test of time...

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air........2005-08-08

I ordered some cds on ebay from a seller and this was thrown in as a bonus. I have not stopped listening to it since. This thing is like a breath of fresh air. Crafty songwriting, great lyrics and just a great feel good rock record. We need more bands like this these days. Im sick of all the new band hype. These guys actually deliver!

5 out of 5 stars Edwin McCain, Lost in America is the best!!!.......2006-07-02

This purchase was my 2nd copy as a gift for my sister. I LOVED the cd so much I want to share it with others.

Best music I've heard in a long time!!!

5 out of 5 stars GROWTH & DIVERSITY OF A MATURING ARTIST.......2006-06-20

I first became interested in Edwin Mc Cain's music after purchasing the "Austin Sessions". A very intimate and quite different body of work from this CD although both are equally compelling. "Lost in America" is quality rock with a superb blend of driving beats and intelligent lyrics. The title song and "Gramercy Park Hotel" exemplify this in particular; but there is not a weak song in the entire collection.

I believe Mr.Mc Cain stays true to his fans by staying true to his self. That is captured in the obvious enthusiasm of the music. I am eager to discover where he goes from hear. Much praise for a fine piece of work. The band and production are also superb.

5 out of 5 stars Lost in America ROCKS!!! Great EMB CD... AGAIN!!!.......2006-06-15

Is this a different than the other Edwin CD's? Yes. But if you realllly look at the previous ones, they are always a little different. I have to say that following the path Edwin takes with this awesome band of his has always been a treat. Waiting in anticipation of each new CD has been such fun. NEVER does this guy... this band... disappoint.

So very glad to finally get a great version of My Mystery on this one! LOVE it. Some may say that song isn't a typical EM song, but then what IS typical? IF you want I'LL BE and/or I COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE... no, it isn't the same. But we HAVE those songs. You will LOVE these, too.

While it's true that Edwin didn't write every one of these songs, I have to say that of the ones he co-wrote and the ones by his band mates... they are "sooooo Edwin!" I think that's a compliment to the members of EMB who are writing with and for Edwin. It shows they are so perfectly matched. Maybe it's also that talent he as for making any song his own. As you know, we all tend to love the original of songs... no matter what. But I'd say most people that have ever heard Edwin's version of Romeo and Juliet will say that isn't true of Edwin McCain. He can take ANYone's song and put that EMB spin on it and it's better than the original! Not many musicians can do that.

I'd have to say my favorite is TRULY BELIEVE. There goes that songwriting again. The lyrics just can't help but make you smile every time you hear them! ANDDDDDD the music is just the amazing. When we saw him do this song at HOB in Chicago, he was singing with all his might... veins sticking out of his neck... WOW! I told my husband, "Edwin's singing it just like I do in the car ... ALONE." :) THE KISS is another one of my favorites. And BLACK & BLUE is amazing. How do you not mention them all? They are the perfect mix of all sides of EMB. Each one shows off the talent of a different member of the band... Larry, Craig, Dave, Pete, Lee... I remember my husband turning it up and saying, "Listen to Lee's bass on this one!" And then it's, "Listen to Craig right here!" He really shows out on a couple of these. Larry??? OMG!!! THis rock stuff is right down his alley! Go, Larry!!! Pete... yes, the guitar... but really, it's his harmony that I love when he sings LIVE with the band. So perfectly matched to Edwin's voice. Dave???? I have to say always that he is the ONLY drummer in my estimation that is soo much more than a drummer. I mean, who ever notices a drummer, unless he's BAD? Well, Dave has something extra that I've never witnessed elsewhere. Wonder how someone could pick out each band member and recognize such talent? Here's how:

All I can say is get it... get in a nice quiet room with a refreshing beverage, dim the lights and just sit back for a great treat! Yes, this one has a 2 songs that are what I call REAL ROCK; along with it is a perfect blending of what >>>I < < < call typical Edwin music... the kind that makes you stop and think! I actually think that once you listen to WELCOME TO STRUGGLEVILLE and BABYLON, you may wonder if the heart of Edwin may really BE rock and the other stuff is atypical! :] Better yet, watch him do Struggleville or Babylon on stage LIVE and then tell me this guy doesn't know Rock 'n Roll! Yessssss!

Go Edwin!

Enjoy it... you'll like it the first time, and by the 3rd or 4th, you'll be trying to smack yourself 'cause you can't get the bloody lyrics out of your head!!!!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Tom Pacheco the invisible lost songwriter.......2003-05-10

I first discovered this cd by Tom Pacheco in my favourite new/secondhand store in Glasgow 2002.I took a listen via headphones and could not believe what I was listening to. Here was a man I had never heard of before, sounding very much like Bob Dylan but more melodic, and the lyrics of his songs were absolutely outstanding and very relevant and clever in this day and age.
I would recommend any newcomer to Tom's music to have a go at this album.
Tom's cds are very hard to come by at a reasonable price due to availabilty etc. but I have managed over the last few months to pick up WoodstockWinter, Sunflowers&Scarecrows, Barebones&Barbwire.
All of which are just as equally as good.
I just cannot understand why Tom is not as well known in the USA as he is in the UK, Europe and Scandanavia. He is nearly the the lost invisible songwriter in America. No disrespect intended

5 out of 5 stars The lost gem vol. 2.......2000-09-05

If you though volume one was great, this one is even better, again more than two hours of music only with his dylanesque voice and his guitar, a few songs co-written by the late Rick danko from the Band, and you get another great cd by Pacheco. Lyrical, full of passion, love and the good side of new age, spiritual singing and writing for the masses, now if the masses knew what they need...

5 out of 5 stars Lost American Songwriter.......2000-07-02

I have most of everything Tom has done recently and this one is one of his best. His wordsmithing is high above most of the "big name" singer/songwiters I have heard. Why he isn't a household name I'll never know. From being backed up by a symphony(Big Storm Coming) to just Tom and his guitar(Bare Bones & Barbed Wire)- he's tried it all. Most of his CD's go gold in Europe. Buy everything-You won't be disappointed!
