5 out of 5 stars The real alternative rock.......2004-12-30

Although the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra is well-known in their native Britain, they are virtually unknown here in the U.S. That is a great pity, because they play wonderful music that is eminently "accessible," no matter what your nationality or cultural heritage may be.

This is probably my favorite CD from the group, and as all their various styles are well-represented here, it would make a great introduction for anyone unfamiliar with the SFO. On this album are charmingly sentimental ballads featuring the beautiful voices of Mary Sandeman and James Nicol, vibrant reels and jigs with titles such as "The Dancing Priest" and "Jig of Slurs" (and, no, I don't know who names these things,) and "The Shetlander," a simple, but utterly endearing fiddle duet that is my favorite number on the CD.

And if you don't think their closing tune, "Caddam Wood," just plain rocks, well, go ahead and order your plot at Forest Lawn, 'cause that's a sign that you're probably dead to the world.

Delightful stuff. Fans of country and bluegrass music would probably be most open to the SFO's style, but I think most anyone with an open mind--or ear--for music would find something to enjoy here.
