Absolutely Beautiful - Great Tenor.......2007-07-27

The recent loss of Jerry Hadley is a tragedy all around but the world of opera and operetta has lost a shining light. This CD of absolutely beautiful music is a wonderful showcase of Mr Hadley's supreme talent. This is a wonderful selection of the best in Operetta and Mr Hadley's lyric tenor sings them all with feeling and emotion. His diction and pronunciation is close to perfection, I have never heard any foreign tenor sing these songs better. If this CD is ever available again, do yourself a favor and add it to your collection - you will not be sorry. Mr Hadley you will surely be missed and I am honored to have this CD in my collection.

I know it's heresy to say this, but this music hasn't been sung so beautifully by a tenor since the great Fritz Wunderlich.

What is it about Jerry Hadley that no matter what he sings, he seems to be just right for the music.

Oh, yeah - I forgot. It's because he is a fabulous musician and probably the most underrated singer in the world today.

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.

While "Singing Land" will never be my favorite Dougie MacLean album, I am still very glad to have it. Unlike his latest album "Who Am I" (yet to be released in America), every song on "Singing Land" is not a masterpiece. Yet they are all solid at the very least--with a few great ones thrown in for good measure.

"Singing Land" is the work of a post-Craigie Dhu Dougie. He still sounds comparatively young, while showing evidence of growth as a musician. All but two of the works here are his own compositions. The other two are his arrangements of traditional songs.

The songs that will stick with you long after you've turned off the music are: the title track; "Desperate Man" (which thematically reminds me of Craigie Dhu's "Seagull"); "This Love Will Carry"; and "Goodnight and Joy" (another stunning example of the wonderful things Dougie can do with the last songs of his recordings).

I admit that I am a hopelessly biased Dougie MacLean fan, but I still say you cannot beat this man's music. "Singing Land" is a disc full of beautiful, searching music. Get this disc!

Bruce and the ring........2006-11-06

The basic track sound is great (I'm referring to game of death) but, differently from the orignal version you can listen in the Bruce Lee's movie, they added the sound of a bell (it souds like a triangle) which rings along all the traks and impede you to really enjoy them!

Well...to keep it short & sweet, I've been a Bruce Lee addict since the 2nd-3rd grade, and while Game of Death wasn't a REAL Bruce Lee flick, the motion picture score really made up for the absence of Lee in 20th Century Fox's version of Game of Death, keeping the focus on the action as opposed to the obvious snippets from past Bruce Lee flicks and the UNCONVINCING double.LOL! But as it relates to the 2003 soundtrack reissue, it's all about tracks 1-11, I love the Game of Death theme, the fight themes(particularly the stick fight with Dan Inosanto), and WILL THIS BE THE SONG I'LL BE SINGING TOMORROW is addictive for life. Beyond the 1st 11 tracks are tunes from Night Games, a movie I've never seen or heard of...so I seldom listen through all of those. However, the ONE reason I didn't give the album a 5 is because they left out the Bruce Lee yell that was supposed to start the opening track. But overall, the GODeath sdtk is a classic.

There is no disappointment in this latest performance from John Barry ~ "Game of Death" and "Night Games", both on Silva America label with brilliant remastering by Rick Clark. The composer John Barry arranged and conducted this masterful score from not to be forgotten Bruce Lee film. Both films can be relived from a passionate and compelling soundtrack that reaches down into the pit of your very soul, as only Barry can do!

Entire album has all the ingredients within every cue to recapture the moments from the screen to the listener at hand ~ found this score to be haunting and deeply suspenseful. Barry's score will transport you into significant areas of your mind which transcend into loving and exciting feelings through his signature style. Sonic quality is outstanding ~ just take a listen and be enticed with "WILL THIS BE THE SONG I'LL BE SINGING TOMORROW", both instrumental and vocal tracks are worth a "film-score-buffs" attention and then some.

Opening track is a delicious composition "THE LESBIAN TANGO", from "Night Games", great solo violinist takes you into a latin ballroom filled with beautiful ladies that will make your heart flutter ~ followed by "WATER SPORTS/THE DOMINATRIX'S WALTZ", typical Barry counterpoints give you a sensation of drifting into the stratosphere ~ let the waltz begin as main theme counter melodies bring harmonious orchestra sections into full swing...gotta love it!

Hats off to Silva America, James Fitzpatrick and David Stoner (album release supervisors), Reynold da Silva (executive producer) and of course the legendary composer, conductor and producer ~ John Barry.

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? Here is a great opera and lieder singer in a light vein. One might suspect that Thomas Hampson, famous for his high seriousness and dramatic projection, is slumming, but his glorious voice, superb vocalism, incredibly clear German diction, and infectious enjoyment give even the corniest arias a persuasive authenticity, despite occasional musical exaggerations and a certain intellectual overrefinement alien to the carefree, spontaneous Viennese idiom. Listeners familiar with these operettas may be surprised to find a baritone singing roles long associated with great tenors such as Richard Tauber and Jan Kiepura, both also operatic stars, but though the range does seem a bit high for Hampson at times, he makes them completely his own in sound, inflection, and spirit. He varies the inevitable reprise of the first verse with great imagination and vocal resourcefulness, including a magical mezza voce and a triumphantly ringing top, and captures the simplicity, piquant charm, humor, and parody of both the words and the melody. The orchestrations tend to underline the corniness of the music, but the playing is terrific. --Edith Eisler

Over the past twenty years Hampson has set out to prove that he can sing anything a baritone voice could wrap itself around, from Bach to Broadway. He does amazingly well, but this CD is a miss. Hampson is a lot of things, but light and smiling isn't two of them. He blusters and sometimes shouts, a far cry from the melting insouciance of echt Viennese style.

Mr. Hampson spends as much care and and craft on these songs as he would on lieder, but the results were disappointing to me. The zest and sparkle that I expect from Viennese operetta is just not there. So, my vote is for less restraint and musicianship and more "joyful abandon" in performance.

Thomas Hampson takes us on a nostalgic trip to old Vienna as we listen to signifant works of the masters of Viennese operetta. The voice is rich, warm, and unabashedly romantic as he caresses each lyric and musical phrase with obvious affection. His "Auf der Heide bluh'n in die letzten Rosen" by Robert Stoltz and "Du bist die Welt fur mich" by Richard Tauber are tender and heart wrenching. He also embraces works by Lehar, Strauss II, Millocker, Zeller and Kalman with gusto and feeling. Of the dozens of operetta recordings I have heard in the last two or three years, none bring me more satisfaction than this generous collection by Mr. Hampson with its lyrical vocalism and lush orchestration. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does. A true delight for operetta devotees.

Fine singing of German by a non-German.......2000-10-24

I had to take off a star only because German language operetta lyrics are almost always better sung by a singer who speaks German as their natural language. Hampson's performances of an excellent selection of highly enjoyable arias are superb, with the sole, very minor negative of the non-germanic diction. Baritone or tenor, this CD is a fine investment which you will play many times.
