Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Before they attained superstar status after an Ed Sullivan show appearance & subsequent signing to Columbia Records by John Hammond, Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem, the legends of the Irish folk song were signed to the Tradition label. The Lark In The Morning is the long-lost, first-ever recording of Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem album. Lark includes many contemporaries of the 1950's Irish folk scene, including their mums and the soon-to-be famous fiddle player Padraig O'Keefe. The music was recorded by song collector Diane Hamilton and Liam Clancy. The Tradition reissue of this album includes new comprehensive liner notes by Liam Clancy. The mastertapes were sonically cleansed and digitially remastered for this release.

5 out of 5 stars steeleye span collection.......2007-05-25

This has all my favorites of steeleye span. I have collected most of their tapes over the years and now glad to have the best on CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Correction.......2006-07-08

"A Music Fan" said: "... the impact of Steeleye Span has been widespread both in rock where they were the first band to incorporate medieval influences in rhythm and texture and among international groups for whom their use of traditional folk tunes set a groundbreaking example ..."

Actually, i think that you'll find that that distinction pretty much belongs to the previous band founded by bass player Ashely "Tyger" Hutchings, Fairport Convention.

Doesn't matter -- this is great stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Much improved sound quality but........2005-06-18

Yes the sound quality is much improved, but the vocals were recorded with a little over driven crunch when the vocals are loud. The older more flat mastering of the songs hides this a little better. But with this being said I still think it is a good buy. You can always turn down your treble a little to cover this if you find it annoying.

I already have these albums from the original CD releases and The improvement in sound clarity is for the most part great for a recording made over 30 years ago.
As a bonus, the set includes a great track "General Taylor".

5 out of 5 stars Hark!........ I hear a new and beautiful sound being born!.......2005-06-09

You might want to get "Lark in the Morning" if you don't have the 1st 3 Steeleye albums - all 3 remastered on 2 cd's for about $11.00 is a nicely packaged steal (other great bands from the era should consider this quality/helpful/convenient format - how about the next three Steeleye's for vol. 2?)!

Steeleye's first album (which I originally wrote this review for) truly is something special! Every song on here is great...too bad that this line-up didn't get a more thorough work-out since the magic is flying everywhere on this recording, and having BOTH female singers makes this one SOAR (though the male vocals are spot-on as well)!

The Blacksmith version on here may be one of my favorite songs I've ever heard in this genre. Other beautiful songs like Fisherman's Wife, Dark-Eyed Sailor, Lowlands of Holland, All Things Are Quite Silent, and One Night as I Lay on my Bed have such great harmonies, melodies and energy (some rock! I'd love to see Tull record a couple of these) that they stick with you long after the cd shuts off. Black-leg Miner is such an energetic and trippy string-whacking and cool vision of a new musical style, I am amazed...even that heavy accent really adds to the song (Bluegrass musicians should check this out). Is there a better way to start a new band and album than the Calling On Song? I could go on and on with other songs on HARK!

This album is just wonderful from beginning to end, do yourself a favor and let this soak into your soul, you won't regret it. Cross-over appeal is broad with this band. I should further explore Terry and Gay Wood's music to see if this magic was created on other recordings of theirs. I know it was on the (also great) later Steeleye albums (this album has drumming which gives it a familiar feel, although they tried it without drums after this album for awhile).

Now for this review, the next two great albums need at least some comment to reassure the unconvinced that it was no fluke - THE MAGIC CONTINUES! Please To See The King starts the "new" sound with the cranked up strings and dulcimer minus Terry & Gay Woods but adding Martin Carthy and Peter Knight (two incredibly talented musicians and singers). So many excellent songs here that getting into them all would be daunting, let's just say that they are ALL great and this package is a blast to listen to all-through.

I imagine this band sometimes as hairy-feet Hobbits smoking long-bottom leaf cranking their wired, crazy little electric instruments to the Shire's delight at the great harvest festival - Mordor quakes at the power of these Middle-Earth minstrels, Orcs and Goblins run for their lives...fun thought anyway! Thanks for the gift of your music Steeleye members past and present. The world would feel more empty without it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Much improved sound quality.......2005-01-14

Most Steeleye Span fans will already have these albums from the original CD releases. The question may be, should I spend the money to get this package. My answer is a resounding yes!
The improvement in sound clarity is phenomenol. Its like hearing these albums for the first time again (especially the first two.)
As a bonus, the set includes the track "General Taylor" previously only available on the compilation "Individually And Collectively"

5 out of 5 stars VW Can't miss.......2007-04-01

It would take a lot of effort to make these works anything but wonderful to my ( untrained) ear. I have other versions of Symphonies 3 & 5, Tallis, and Lark, but am not that familiar with the rest. I bought the CD set just to hear them. VW's music goes straight to my soul, perhaps because I was born about 40 km ( 25 miles ) from the composer. These works evoke instant nostalgia. Haintink, the orchestra , soloists, sound fine. I particularly enjoyed Ian Bostridge.

5 out of 5 stars Vaughan Williams the Great European Symphonist.......2004-12-15

2004 Has been a good year for Box Sets of Vaughan Williams Symphonies. Best of the bunch is this one from EMI with Bernard Haitink conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Do not be put off by the lengthy gestation of the project, over 16 years between 1984 and 2000, there is a consistency of interpretation, performance and sound.

Haitink's first recording in the set of the 7th Symphony, the Sinfonia Antarctica is his manifesto. He takes Vaughan Williams out of the cosy world of 20th century British music and the interpretive shadow cast by Adrian Boult and places him in an ongoing tradition of European symphonists. Haitink revels in the richness of the symphony's sound worlds and in the romantic heart which he finds in them all. These are rich, big boned interpretations. Nowhere more so than in this 7th Symphony, from the episodic feast of the first movement onwards, and there is surely no recording with a more appropriate acoustic.

The First in the cycle , `A Sea Symphony" is startling, as conductor, orchestra and singers burn a new way to the heart of this huge work with a searingly intense first movement.

The Second, A London Symphony has many fine recordings. Here the louder passages are brash, boisterous and thoroughly urban. Vaughan Williams loved city life and would surely have approved.

The Third, A Pastoral Symphony is one of the most striking reinterpretations here, and perhaps the hardest to take for traditionalists. Boult's mystical manipulation of blocks of chords with solo instruments floating above them is replaced with lyrical argument.

The furies at the heart of the Fourth Symphony are set free to great effect, as they are in the Sixth Symphony. Haitink excels in the demonic dance music in both symphonies and the jazz elements in the Sixth are enthusiastically articulated

If the interpretation of the Pastoral Symphony is striking, that of the 8th is a complete transformation, and one that convinces. No longer is this a small symphony, here it is the considerable utterance of a master.

The Fifth symphony is its radiant self, but the questions that also inhabit the score are welcomed, giving this performance light and shade.

The Ninth Symphony, sometimes considered a difficult work sounds like a natural summation of Vaughan Williams musical journey. It is a suitable epitaph, autumnal but radiating vigour.

There are a number of filler works here, like the Symphonies some are radical reinterpretations. I am not convinced by this Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. In The Lark Ascending the programme is forgotten and it becomes a one movement concerto with a continuous violin line.

Haitink's interpretations are not for everyone. If you want modern a modern equivalent of Boult with good digital sound choose the Vernon Handley Set on Classics For Pleasure. That also has the benefit of a more generous selection of extra works. If you want to hear exciting modern performances in exemplary sound snap up this bargain box.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

5 out of 5 stars Seems identical to the earlier reissue on CD?.......2006-04-26

This does not seem to differ from the Tradition CD issued (and less expensive) with a green cover that features the Clancy and Makem names. On this newer issue, perhaps fairer to the other "family and friends" who also contributed the lion's share of the 22 tracks, all musicians and singers get mention on the cover--this art reproducing the original 1955 album. The notes are skimpy, only scanning those on the back of the LP, but it does sound excellent. See Liam Clancy's memoir "Mountain of the Women" for much more about Diane Hamilton (Guggenheim!) and his checkered relationship with her, as she came to Ireland to record folk singers for this, the first issue on her Tradition label.

Mixing the "whack fol diddly eye day" type of mouth music making when a singer imitates an instrument, ballads about cuckoldry, spousal drowning, slow poisoning, and "false young men" who lead fair maidens astray, and finally simple instrumentals, this 1955 recording sounds great. Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and many other folk and folk-rock listeners of the 60s adapted quite a few of these songs into more contemporary sonic settings, but the purity of these field recordings by Diane Hamilton also captures a moment now lost--singers and players in their native habitat of the Irish rural house one night. Not only the Makems and Clancys, by the way. The mastering of this allows you to hear the catch of breath, the second's hesitation as a woman's voice joins the man's in starting the verse, and the tiny slip in the lyric that betrays an all too human touch lost in the studio of many more elaborate attempts since then to recapture the simplicity here.

Beautiful relaxing harmonica and harp music. You've got to be a harmonica lover(which I Am) to enjoy this CD. I'm a chromatic harmonica student so this is right up my alley. Tommy Reilly displays wonderful technique and phrasing. If you are having trouble getting to sleep throw this baby on and you'll be having 40 winks in no time.

5 out of 5 stars 1955 home recordings: Irish trad in its native habitat.......2006-04-26

This version with a rural photo on the cover, from Tradition Records, does not reproduce as does a more recent re-issue the original look of the album with Louis deBrocquey's handsome cover art-- or the skimpy liner notes-- of the original issue, but the songs remain the same. See Liam Clancy's memoir "Mountain of the Women" for much more about Diane Hamilton (Guggenheim!) and his checkered relationship with her, as she came to Ireland to record folk singers for this, the first issue on her Tradition label.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......1999-05-26

Being a great fan of "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy makem", I must say that this album has been one of my favorites. From what I have heard, these songs that were recorded on this CD were once lost and forgotten. But they were re-recorded and I have to say that this album is an excellent choice for Irish Music lovers.
