Dream Sounds [EP]
Dream Sounds [EP]
Editorial Reviews
The Wire
"What Shinji Shibayama is after is nothing less than the moment itself..."
Product Description
'Dream Sounds' may be the closest Nagisa Ni te ever gets to a "greatest hits" album. And although there are only four tracks on this CD (some previously released, but all re-recorded, re-mixed and re-mastered for this special edition), it clocks in at over forty minutes and runs the whole gamut of Nagisa Ni te's songcraft. This full-length is the perfect introduction to the dreamy and nature-obsessed universe of Nagisa Ni te. Their psych-folk tendencies notwithstanding, Nagisa Ni te have also done well throughout all of their records to take cues from the avant rock world around them, comfortably implementing the minimalist credo of "less is more" throughout their body of work.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11
Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.
Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.
Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.
Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.
The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04
God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.
As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.
Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.
Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03
Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!
heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22
These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.
Be careful.......1999-09-14
Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

Laika's second album, Sounds of the Satellites, combines ambient melodies and pop lyrics with thick, complex jazz percussion and dub-style bass rhythms. Catchy bass lines snap your ears to attention as well-syncopated and driving drums fill out the rest of the rhythm. Layered on top of this, Margaret Fiedler's haunting voice chimes in as a solid melody, dancing at the top of the harmonic range; expands and contracts, filling and amplifying the points where her voice fades for another breath. --Ryan Kuykendall

Customer Reviews:
laika is a dog who is dead.......2005-05-22
i remember when i first heard this i was thinking i'd found a really good album i'd never really heard of and thought that was neat. but then i got like halfway through the album and wanted to hear something else. it sounds really good right away, but then it doesn't really hold my interest, maybe cuz some of the songs aren't as good as the others and it's too long. if they had left off about half the songs it would be at least twice as good. i think it sounds a little like portishead.
THE STARS, AS SEEN FROM EARTH.......2000-03-23
After the busy, dizzy soundscapes of "Silver Apples of the Moon," Laika return two years later with the cooler, spacier sonic drifts of "Sounds of the Satellites." There are still clanks, quirks and rattles a'plenty, but with larger spaces in between. "Prarie Dog" lopes and glistens, like stars twinkling over a grassy hill. "Spooky Rhodes" and "Breather" pillow you on lush drifts of gentle electronica. "Bedbugs" and "Poor Gal" stir up the mix with car alarms, clanks, inner city groove and outerspace noise. "Blood and Bones" hits a happy medium, tempo, noise and space.
Lyrically, Margaret Fiedler is still mining the same vein she hit on "Silver Apples"--domestic violence ("Shut Off/Curl Up"), feminism ("Bedbugs"), and characters from the edge of society ("Poor Gal"). This album also contains some of Margaret's darkest lyrics ever: "Dead dreams dropping off the heart like leaves in a dry season" ("Breather"); "There are things I can't explain; why tornadoes love the plains; why my dreams have lost their wings..." ("Spooky Rhodes").
Over all, a more haunting album than "Silver Apples," but just as worthy to belong in any discerning music fan's collection. And if they've still got some left, the liner notes tell you how to get a Laika snowglobe.
Haunting, ambient, complex, but always musical........2000-02-25
This is one of the few records that lives up to the promise of electronic music. Some of the tracks are very complex, but they always remain musical. Laika uses a mixture of new technology like drum loops, and old technology (fender rhodes organ, electric bass) and the result is a very organic album. The songs really breathe in a way that few 'electronica' pieces do. Good lyrics also.
synchopated layers.......2000-01-29
First listening in the car was too unfocused to really appreciate this cd. I'd have to agree this one doesn't neccessarily fit in any 'genre' of electronic. Playing now on the boom box in the quiet concentrated night, the music takes flight. Vocals thick and husky, yet still flying about like the higher voiced siren types. Sure you could dance to it, but not the same old bass drum endless mix. These folks are exploring some new areas. Not exactly world beat, cousins in conception perhaps. Organic drumming, electronic backfill. Guitar much apreciated. The lyrics will take a few headphone listenings. You can spend time with this cd. I'd suggest it, if you are looking for something intelligent but genuinely inventive. And still, fun. Feels more like a celebration than the moody stuff that many of their contemporaries are putting out these days. I wish I could provide a comparison, but I can't. That's one of the better reasons to consider the music. It is unique. Contemporary, not over the edge for the sake of 'originality'.
Kewl.......2000-01-02
This Cd is futuristic and is ahead of its time. The songs are strange and mysterious, but are still fun to listen to. Sounds of the Satellites beams you up to the moon!

Album Description
Following their critically acclaimed debut EP for Ghostly & a few independent releases, Brooklyn via Shutesbury MA's MOBIUS BAND finally deliver their first longplayer. 10 songs of British incluenced rock songs with elements of electronica ala The Broadcast and Postal Service, with depth & maturity beyond the young trio's years.
Customer Reviews:
After four great EPs, band stumbles a bit on full length debut.......2005-11-23
In four years, The Mobius Band have released four different EPs, showing a slow progression from a somewhat ramshackle indie rock electronic band with influences that ranged from kraut to ambient to an almost straightforward rock trio with small flourishes of the weird touches that initially set them apart. Fortunately, their songwriting skills have also grown as well, and their City Vs Country EP (that came out earlier this year) found the group creating some of their best and most concise tracks to date.
So, several years after their inception, the group is finally debuting their first full-length release in The Loving Sounds Of Static and the results are slightly mixed. There are still some great tracks, but there are also some ones that feel almost like filler, and given that the album runs barely over forty minutes, it makes the album sag a bit. One of said songs is the opener of "Detach," which seems to have all the components in place, but just sort of spins in place with fairly plain chord progressions and an overlong second half. Fortunately, the group kicks things up a notch musically with a more driving rhythm section and some synth-laced breakdowns that seem to pile up the momentum.
Then again, the group sorta scraps that momentum through the midsection of the album with a batch of midtempo electro-ballad tracks. "Twilight" mixes some overwrought lyrics with twinkling synth noodlings while "Taxicab" finds the group remaking one of their old tracks with a bogged-down electro lullaby feel. Even the loud ending can't salvage the track, and the mopey pace continues with "You're Wrong." Of course the group doesn't have to rock out on every track, but with the aforementioned (and a couple others sandwiched in) tracks comprising almost half the running length of the entire album, it makes for a bit of a slog.
The group picks things up from there out, and turn in some of their best tracks to date. The album-titled "The Loving Sounds Of Static" finds the group locking into the honed sound that they turned in on their City Vs Country EP and the resulting track is a breath of fresh air while "I Just Turned 18" is a bit on the silly side lyrically, but still an invigorating track that draws on past memories without coming across as cloying. The album closer of "Doo Wop" brings some ringing guitars and odd time signatures in for another solid track and a great closing to the album. Based on their past output, The Loving Sounds Of Static has about 2 EPs worth of good material and another EPs worth of tracks that just don't quite feel up to par. Given it's the true album debut from the group, I'll cut them some slack, but here's hoping they can harness the strength of their short game (to use a golf term) from here on out.
(from almost cool music reviews)
Moderate Sounds of Static.......2005-09-14
Mobius Band had everything going for them leading up to their debut full-length: they've already released a couple of outstanding EPs, they put on a great live act, and they've been compared to some of the most popular bands in their genre. Sad to say, they didn't live up to the hype with their first LP.
The album starts out slow. It ends slow. Where it recaptures some of what's come before is on songs like "You're Wrong", where it revisits Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong", or on the song "I Just Turned 18", the closest they come on the album to an FM-friendly track. Songs like Philadelphia test the patience, and beg to be skipped because you know what's left to come, and it's easy to tell that you don't need to hear it.
Don't get me wrong. I really like this band. A 3 star on Amazon means that it's an OK album. And that's what it is. Ok. Bands like The Postal Service or The Broadcast are being done an injustice if you refer to them based on this album alone. I'll look forward to future releases by the Mobius Band, because I know they have more to give than this album alone.
Back to the future?--kind of? .......2005-09-14
Okay, I am 44 years old and remember going to The Paradise in Boston when I was in my teens. My musical past goes way back to seeing the emergence of bands before they were popular, and I 've watched the transition go from metal to techno to really bad pop and even worse rap.
I am glad to see the return of some bands with decent sound (hallelulah!) like Mobius Band. I've been playing my old 80's music so long now, seemingly forever, waiting for this type of music to return. It has returned--digitized no less.
This CD has some really great, clean sounds, seemingly simple but actually pretty intricate (without sounding cluttered) when you listen to them. And the lyrics have meaning--joy oh joy.
Hoping for more from these guys.
heard about this record from a friend..........2005-08-28
and this is by far the smartest and most cohesive record i've heard in a long time. i love the cool breeze vocals that are emotive (but not emo!) and not too hipster-detached. very excited to see them live and spread the word - so if you're reading this, do yourself a favor and buy both the EP and full album as they're honestly better than arcade fire and bloc party combined! seriously - mobius band has some lasting songs that deserve a good listen and a permanent spot in your record collection.
believe the hype - this a fine debut........2005-08-22
like the other review says, loving sounds of static is a record that is both forward-thinking and mom-friendly..quite an achievement, i'd say. in dealing with growing up and breaking up, mobius band offer a much more mature take on the subject matter than most other pop songwriters, making this a very poignant debut that should have something to offer almost everyone.
musically the band strike a very interesting balance between glitchiness and live instruments (especially in the drumming) that seems like a natural step forward from bands like the postal service and interpol. i hope mobius band gets more attention, cos this album has 'sleeper hit' written all over it..

good starting place for this band..........2000-10-27
this features the song "time baby 3" which has additional vocals from elizabeth fraser of cocteau twins and was on the soundrtrack to "the crow". if you've seen the movie, you've seen medicine because they play the song in the movie...this basically has remixes of songs and extra songs...i dotn think its their best album, but it is essential. the music is the same old medicine format: EXTREMELY noisy guitars, LOUD drums, BREATHY vocals, bass/keyboards/sounds/etc...like i've said before: if you like shoegazer music and/or my bloody valentine( who are part of that wonderful scene) you'll love this and possibly damage your speakers from the noise! warning: keep the volume lower than you normally would or you'll be in need of some more speakers soon!...

Album Description

The Helio Sequence - 'Com Plex' (Cavity Search).......2004-10-25
Nine tunes of semi-innocent sounding space pop that has nothing to prove whatsoever.Hailing from Porland,OR,believe it or not, this is a duo.Brandon Summers is on guitar and vocals and Ben Weikel is on keyboards and drums.I happen to notice sort of a Beatles/Cheap Trick like melody here.Best tracks are "Just Married Jane",the spell-binding "My Heart",the soaring "Sassafras",their glossy cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows"(now, that's class-the way they do it anyway),"Big Jet Sky" and "Demographics".Okay,I confess.'Com Plex' is better than what I had expected. Was recorded in a one-room music store of the two musician's day job.I've caught these guys playing live and if you get the chance to do so yourself, take my advise:bring earplugs. They can probably up and quit their day job now.
Cool Sounds.......2002-12-31
There's a mixture of fluid and static music in this record that makes it a bizarre cross between Kraftwerk and King Black Acid. Most people don't know who KBA is so instead we'll call it a mixture between Kraftwerk and early Pink Floyd. Throw into that bit of late-Beatles and Blurish Brit-pop. There's a soft electonica underbelly to Helio Sequence which heard by itself is almost trancy. On top of it is wet delay-ridden guitars soaring toward spacerock. Its innovative and gets better with every listen. Its power is in the music and instrumental jams/solos. The songs are not particularly catchy and lack strong hooks -- in other words after listening to the album no songs get stuck in my head. But it is also complex and textured which makes each listening a fresh experience. The album feels a bit restrained as if the musicians are unable or unwilling to let loose or perhaps that they are slaves to their electronica fundament. Check out track #3. That's about as poppy as they get.
Wow!!!.......2002-05-01
I started sending out my bands demo a couple days before I got this album in the mail. It's intimidating to hear a couple of new guys that recorded at the house (much like I have) and they sound this good. I can't believe they're not bigger than they are. It's not just [good] music, its deep, highly creative, and catchy as hell. Some bands do something and you say "Wow, I know where your coming from!!" But with these guys your saying "Wow, I wish I knew where you were coming from!!" I bought this album because of the MBV comparisons, and I kept hearing the beatles mentioned and you do kind of get the sense of Kevin Shields doing Sgt. Peppers, but this album is by no means a rehash of anything I've ever heard. I gotta check out their next release!
Absolutely amazing.......2001-09-13
Two kids perform and record an entire album and put together nine tunes worthy of heavy airplay. This is a truly professional-sounding production with catchy tunes and psychedelic, deep music. The comparison to the Beatles is natural, especially since they do a respectable cover. Very English-sounding.
I'm still amazed at how little-known this record is (but is probably understandable with the small label and little publicity). I expect we will be hearing much more from them, on a bigger label with an even more impressive mastering of their next album. Take this CD to your friends' next party and watch them as they listen to Com Plex. Pity it isn't available on vinyl.
Simply amazing.......2001-05-03
This is undoubtedly the best album I've purchased this year. If you like Mercury Rev, this one is better. It's more creative, more energetic, more out there. It has just the right mix of lyrical melody and drugged-out oddity. All I can say is I hope they're putting out more some time soon.

Album Description
The Temiar people of the central Malaysian rainforest are deeply spiritual. Inspired by their vibrant natural environment, they have developed a musical landscape that evolves from their dreamsdreamsongs. Dreamsongs form the basis for community-wide singing and trance-dancing ceremonies, which celebrate all the important occasions in Temiar society. Proceeds from artist's royalties are donated to rainforest preservation in Malaysia and to the indigenous peoples there. 21 tracks. "Rhythms that lure you irresistibly away to the land of dreams." -Wereldmuziek Update
Customer Reviews:
Step outside your mind.......2004-10-06
I asked for (and received) this for Christmas of 2003 and have visited it many times since then. From the liner-notes...
"The Malaysian rainforest is a vibrant environment, rich with sound from forest floor to canopy, river's edge to mountain crest. Temiar dreamsongs emerge from their engagement with the spirits of their resonant landscape, about 2500 square miles of lowland and highland rainforest in peninsular Malaysia. Here their small communities of 20 - 150 people have traditionally been scattered."
These recordings are firmly in the vein of what I call "deep-earth music". That's not a style or a genre, but just my way of encompassing the musics of the peoples who are still able to cling to traditional ways, ideas, and ancient modes of expression. This is strictly the artistic and ritualistic expression of an ancient people who are singularly their own communal entity. I mention this because I don't want the title of this disc to scare anyone off. This is not any New Agey fluff with digital thunderstorms in the background as synthesizer wankery pads along.
The Temiar believe that during everyday waking moments you are in a bounded state. During trances and dreams you are unbounded and truly free, and that is when the songs come.
As for the music itself, it generally consists of a rhythmic drone-choir of females backing a male (usually) or female lead singer. The lead singer being the person to whom the song was given by spirits encountered during the unbounded state. The choir plays bamboo tube stampers, usually in a slow, hypnotic pattern that varies from song to song. The recordings are mostly from the early 1980s, though a few are from '91.
There are a whole host of symbols and reasonings behind all of the aspects of this music to the Temiar, which I will let you find out for yourself. For someone like me, an outsider, this is just great music that hits me in my own spiritual ways. The drone-choir of females will lull you outside of your own mind. The bamboo tubed rhythms are fantastic. Just these simple, repetitive rhythms that seem to do exactly what gave them to the Temiar to begin with... unbind your mind. This music is deep-forest hypnosis. The recordings are not often as "right there" as other field-recordings you may have. Take for instance the Abayudaya disc I recently reviewed. That disc is so amazingly recorded you feel like you're right there in that little temple with them. It's the perfect context for that music. On this disc though, there are times where the feeling is more like you are you, an outsider, who got lost in the rainforest at night but you heard this music in the distance and decided to follow it. Nervous, scared, or just shy, you don't fully approach the people, but you hang just far enough from the village to go unnoticed and listen to the music a little closer. That's how this disc makes me feel. It's like stumbling across something that is not for you... that you cannot fully understand or enter... but it brings you home and draws you in. It's all at once a musical glimpse into the human past and present... and hopefully the future.

Customer Reviews:
I can't believe no one else has written a review!.......2003-06-10
As a yoga instructor/musician, i am constantly seeking out music that moves and transports, centers and calms. I have heard all of Shaman's Dream's records, and this is my fave. The first track has one of the loveliest Shanti chants. I often use this CD in my classes, and it is fine to let it play without interruption, starting gently, slowing building into a steady rhythm, and then coming down easy. Shaman's Dream play frequently at trance-dance gatherings in Los Angeles, so they are well versed in what will move a listener, what will allow the thinking mind to fall away, what will evoke deep exploration. Craig Kohland is a master. If you like Gabrielle Roth, Anugama, Krishna Das, etc. or just Eastern music in general, i think you'll dig this.
