Celtic Voices
Celtic Voices
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This 65-minute compilation from the Green Linnet label brews a wispy, contemporary atmosphere that will sound familiar to veteran Celtic listeners, lyrical and warm to new North Sea isle explorers. There's a mixed bag of songs here--all finely recorded--from albums by such established artists as Loreena McKennitt, Nóirín Ní Riain, Karen Matheson (Capercaillie), and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh (Altan) as well as newcomers Kíla and the Iron Horse. Unlike other Celtic samplers, this collection focuses on the Celtic voice and is oftentimes spiced with modern musical accompaniment--so modern that Dan Ar Braz's "She's Gone" sounds like it belongs in an American TV-folk compilation and Talitha MacKenzie's "Ajde Jano" in a Serbian-dance anthology. Still, for a record of who's pushing the boundaries of Celtic music, it does the genre justice by spotlighting the more obscure vocalists and groups otherwise not covered by mainstream media. --Karen Karleski

Customer Reviews:
Music for Meditation.......2007-01-04
This is a delightful collection of music appropriate to meditative prayer. It is often my prayer companion, and I like the style and performance found on this CD. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy deeper reflection with a wordless musical background.
Be Thou My Vision.......2005-10-19
Track 3, Be Thou My Vision, was a surprise as the song was the final song played at my father's funeral. It set the closing mood most fittingly. While Be Thou My Vision is my favorite the entire collection is wonderfully mellow. I recommend it for for the mellow moods.
Reverent, beautiful.......2003-09-21
After criticizing Windham Hill in the past for often recycling the same songs over and over in various collections, I have to hand it to them with the new "Prayer" CD. It's a fine set of all-new acoustic versions of hymns or spiritual songs, plus a good number of original compositions. Producer Dawn Atkinson has done an excellent job of lining up a bunch of top-drawer people for "Prayer," and in working with the artists on the song selection.
Things get started with Tim Story's lovely piano rendition of the "Sanctus" from Faure's Requiem. The quiet and reflective tone of that piece carries throughout the CD. Other highlights include Paul McCandless's moving "Lord's Prayer" version and Steve Erquiaga's "Ave Maria." "Prayer" is a perfect disc for background listening if you're engaged in some activity that needs harmonious yet unobtrusive accompaniment.

Excellent album.......2007-01-10
This is one of my favorite music CDs. The music has a haunting beauty about it, and although (from a guy's perspective) one or two of the songs are a little sappy/girlie, overall I still find this one of my favorite albums.
Fantastic.......2006-02-23
I can listen to this disc over and over again. I have listened to it for about a month now, and am still not tired of the lilting voices. A wonderful composite of singers and songs.
Four Fair Maidens Awaken The Celtic Muse.......2006-02-01
'Celtic Voices' featuring Mary McLaughlin, Connie Dover, Maireid Sulllivan and Emma Christian is a wonderous blend of traditional and contemporary folk compositions. This 14 track compilation moves smoothly and seamlessly through a fascinating soundscape of mood and emotion with each performer leaving her own indellible mark on the listener. There's McLauglin's brooding and deeply mystical 'Yundah,' Dover's festive 'In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir,' and Sullivan's nostalgic and romantic 'She Moves Through the Fair.' Concluding with Christian's bittersweet 'The Goodnight Song' we bid a sad farewell, at least for now, to a beautiful listening experience that will call you back again and again to the Emerald Isle of Dreams.
It's simply the best compilation of Celtic music I've yet to come across. Definitely one of the essentials.
really beautiful.......2005-08-15
this is definitely repeat listening material. the voices are so wonderful, the words are almost unnecessary. some of the songs bring tapping and swaying to your whole body, others bring tears. i am certainly glad i bought this cd.
an amazingly beautiful album.......2005-03-15
This absolutely breathtaking album features four women who, even though are not as well known as artists such as Eyna, Loreena Mckennitt, Clannad and The Chieftians, have made a monumental impact on not only the Celtic music industry, but also in my own life.
First there is Mary McLaughlin who sings "Bring The Peace", "You Saw His Eyes", and "Sealwoman/Yundah". Born in North Ireland, Mary moved to London at the age of 18 where her music career began to flourish. The album begins with "Sealwoman/Yundah", a spellbinding, almost erotically charged song inspired by the Celtic legand of the selkies (sea-like creatures able to take human form). In it the "Sealwoman" (selkie) is torn between her home (the sea) and human love. Next up is "Bring The Peace" a lovely song about gaining wisdom after a period of seperation, and for coming "full circle." Rounding off the three songs Mary contributes is "You Saw His Eyes" whose message resonates any pop song that's out there today: to love someone only to be brokenhearted.
next up is Connie Dover, born in Arkansas and raised in Missouri. She sings "The Wishing Well", "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir", "Siuil a Ruin" and "Cantus". Praising the birth and final sacrifice of Christ as well as the devotion of Mary, his Mother, "Cantus" is exceptionally emotional. "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir" (at haycutting time) is a stark contrast to "Cantus". More lively and upbeat, this traditonal song finishes with a dance tune written by Phil Cunningham who has had a long and fruitful working relationship with Connie. The mood changes drasticlly once again for "The Wishing Well", inspired by a poem written by Padraig Prease. This poignant song is about the sometimes overpowerful feelings of love and the fear of "losing yourself" in the process. "Siuil a Ruin" (go, love) is the heartbreaking tale of a woman's love for a solider who has fled to France in times of war.
After Connie's beautiful voice, there is the equally stunning voice of Maireid Sullivan, who was born in Ireland and at age 11 moved with her family to San Francisco, and later moved to Melbourne, Australia. She sings "Colour Me", and the more traditional "She Moved Through The Fair" and "Waly Waly". "Colour Me", co-written by Maireid and guitarist Steve Wilson, paints a lovely picture of a river on a sunny day. "She Moved Through The Fair" has been a favorite among celtic artists (Lorenna Mckennitt also sings a rendition of it, among others)and "Waly Waly", another traditional favorite is sometimes refered to "The Water Is Wide"
Closing out the album is harpist and Isle Of Man native Emma Christian who contributes the songs "Ushag Veg Ruy" (Little Red Bird), "Oikan Ayns Bethlehem" (Birth In Bethlehem),"O Kirree, Tou Goll Dy Faagail Mee" (O Kirree Thou Wilt Leave Me), and (very fittingly) "Arrane Oie Vie" (The Goodnight Song). Sung in her native language, Manx Gaelic, Emma creates a serene, intimate atmosphere for her audience. Keeping close to her roots, all four songs are rich with the Manx tradition.
The Title for this cd (Celtic Voices:Women Of Song) is so perfect because I feel the human voice is one of the most complex and beautiful instruments. This cd clearly demostrates that in the stunning, impressive talents of these four women. This is a wonderful album for immense lovers of Celtic music (such as myself) and also for those who are new to Celtic music. I highly recommend it.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Wolcum Yule.......2006-01-17
The recording is fine . . . it just didn't appeal to me personally
lovely and unusual Yule album.......2004-01-06
Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.
The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.
Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09
This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

Excellent Recording by a World Class Brass Ensemble.......2005-12-27
The Empire Brass Quintet is one of the leading Brass ensembles in the world today, and this album showcases why. Their intonation, blending, sense of phrase, unity of sound, and beauty of tone is unparalleled. If you have any appreciation for Brass ensemble literature and/or Celtic music in general, this album weds the two in a superb example of tasteful musicianship.
A rousing listen!.......2004-04-17
I've owned this recording for years. My family and I absolutely love the lively renditions. Ignore the naysayers - sample this CD and you'll love it too!
A jolly, festive jaunt through Renaissance & Celtic fare!.......2002-11-29
The Empire Brass Quintet's arrangements for trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba, are--if not exactly period--pleasingly creative, crossing cultural and temporal boundaries with natural ease. Adding zest to the recording is the outrageously lively and exotic percussion (both acoustic and electronic) of Kurt Wortman, as well as bagpipes, drums, vocals, violin, cello, recorder and guitar provided by a host of other guest artists. This music is not meant to be historically authentic, but just plain fun. And it is! I picked this up on impulse in a bookstore because of the whimsical cover art, and it turned out to be one of my favorite purchases in years. Give it a sampling and see for yourself!
Problems with audio mixing.......2002-07-03
The audio mixing engineer did a terrible job on this one. The drummer sounds like he was placed in a large empty hall with the microphone 2 inches away. His rat-a-tat completely overwhelms the music.
Make your baby boogie!.......1999-10-01
The songs on this album are a delicious swirl of brass, drums, and bagpipes. My one-year-old can't resist bouncing and jiggling along with the music, which makes me love it even more. Their rendition of "Amazing Grace" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, which is pretty often! The songs have a festive feel, making this a great alternative to the stereotypical selections on most holiday CDs.

Where do we get more like this??.......2003-11-08
My husband and I both just love this CD ~ something in it's rich and varied musical geography is guaranteed to touch a chord in you! The music varies from primal to modern, alternating styles from frolicking folk songs to yearning love ballads. I can't imagine not owning this CD!!
Uncommon music.......2002-09-24
I listen to this CD at work all the time. It is different, uplifting, and never boring. In addition to a few familiar voices, this collection of modern Irish music has many songs that I humm to myself throughout the day.
An eclectic intro to Irish music.......2000-08-26
This is a great collection, both for afficianados of Irish music and those who are just beginning to build their collection. It features recordings by some of the brightest stars of Irish pop and traditional music. There are well-known names here, including Bono, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, and Sinead O'Connor, but the best part of the CD comes with the lesser known Irish artists, like Maire Brennan (lead singer of Clannad), Paul Brady, Davy Spillane, Christy Moore, and Sharon Shannon. There's no way this CD could ever be complete - there are too many wonderful Irish artists to fit on one CD. But this is a pretty good start. They should release a sequel, though, and include some of the newer Irish artists, like Sinead Lohan and the Corrs.
A primer for modern irish music.......2000-02-08
This is probably the best album out there for people interested in the rich music culture that is Ireland. It provides a mix of modern talent, with traditional songs. And its the one irish compilation album that doesn't have the great Chieftans or Tommy Makem. (not that there is any thing wrong with those legends)
Sharon Shannon.......1999-11-23
Track 4 on this album is amazing. Sharon Shannon's talent is quite remarkable. If you can't get tickets to see her in person, this is a great substitute. The rest, well it's well worth the purchase

The second volume of Voices of Celtic Women features some of the finest singers in Ireland and Scotland. The music ranges from the ultratraditional a cappella of Ray Fisher to the techno beat of Talitha MacKenzie. This collection overcomes the potentially jarring musical transitions such a wide stylistic gap can create by skillfully choosing songs that have slower tempos and similar themes. Sorrow and longing are the threads that tie traditional performances like Dolores Keane's "The Low Low Lands of Holland" and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill's "Martha, the Flower of Sweet Strabane" to more modern songs like Susan McKeown's "Banks of Claudy" and Antoinette McKenna's "O Ro Song of the Sea." There are many laments and tragic ballads here, but the dignity and emotional power of the singers keep the songs from becoming mere tearjerkers. This is music to listen to in solitude, perhaps when you are trying to mend a broken heart. --Michael Simmons

Holding up Half the Sky: Voices of Celtic Women II.......2005-04-16
This is an absolutely excellent CD. The last song is my most favorite, but they all are really great.
Celtic Music Fan.......2002-01-03
This is a great CD. I find it's one I turn to often when I want to hear beautiful, soothing music. The singers' present wonderful ballads and laments, evoking powerful images and emotions. Even though it features several different performers, there is a seamless quality to the CD itself - each song seems to fit in perfectly with the others.

Old-school Irish folk music.......2005-03-29
This is a collection of old, pre-1950s Irish folk and art-song recordings, made before the folk revival of the '60s and '70s. It's probably too tame and fusty for the average Celtic music fan, but it's still pretty interesting. Well-programmed, with good sound quality and song selection.

Customer Reviews:
Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10
We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.
I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).
Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.
Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06
I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.
Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29
Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.

Since the Clancy Brothers, the Dubliners, and the Chieftains, plus their many traditionally based descendants, have come on the scene, it has become fashionable to roll one's eyes over the vaudeville-flavored floridness of the Irish-American tenor repertoire. Steeped in rampant sentimentality and nostalgia, some of it is undeniably a bit corny, but that only adds to its historic interest and sneaky charm. And when interpreted by bell-voiced singers like John McCormack, Christopher Lynch, and Jack Benny's long-time henchman, Dennis Day, these vintage, gem-like miniatures are revealed as a type of culturally-specific American parlor music, not unlike the works of Stephen Foster. In the early to middle decades of the 20th century, when these songs were at their most popular, Irish-Americans had certainly weathered their fair share of misery; although deeply clannish, they were now well assimilated. Listening to wistful ballads about of love and parting, to say nothing of the occasional music hall turn performed in an exaggeratedly comic peasant brogue, not only reminded them of where they had come from but more importantly, celebrated how far they had come. --Christina Roden

All Irish Music is Wonderful.......2007-04-04
Just buy it . Best voices, best production and joyous. Not all Irish music is fun stuff. Some of it is indeed sad. "Tis".
Old-school Celtic Music.......2006-04-03
This CD is old-school Irish music, the traditional Irish folk songs that many are so familiar with. "Danny Boy," "The Rose of Tralee," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" are all familiar favorites that are played over and over this time of year. And the performances are good.
You won't hear modern Celtic music on this CD, though. These are Irish crooners: think Frank Sinatra or Danny Kaye on St. Patrick's Day and you get the idea here. My favorites on this one had to be "Clancy Lowered the Boom" by Dennis Day, and Morton Downey's "The Same Old Shillelegh" - both are more upbeat songs than the rest.
I think the problem with this CD is that it's dated. The music often sounds like it was pulled from the 1940s - which it was, since this is a remastering of original recordings. I think those who remember the old days of the Hit Parade, or those who enjoy listening to that style of music, will enjoy the CD. The only real clunker to me was Christopher Lynch's rendition of "The Minstral Boy" - something about his voice just didn't agree with me, for some reason, on that song.
All in all, this is a decent addition to your St. Patrick's Day music collection.
Fun, funny, old-school Irish pop.......2006-03-09
This is a great set of old-school Irish/Irish-American pop from 1921-51, with sentimental standards like "Danny Boy" lined up next to stereotype-laden novelty songs that are even more fun now than they were back in the good old days. Celtic folk purists might not like this stuff, but open-eared listeners will still get a great kick out of 'em. Recommended!

Best celtic music compilation!.......2006-04-14
We heard "Rambling Irishman" on the radio in Ireland while on our honeymoon. We fell in love with that version of the song and found it on this album along with a bunch of other goodies!
beautiful music!.......2000-06-21
Anyone who has a flare for celtic music that is captivating and moving at once, this is the CD for you! It's so beautiful, I can sit listening to it for hours and not get tired of it. I've not been a fan of Celtic music for too long, but the music that I have heard on this CD and others has me hooked. This CD provoked a strange look from my uncle, but I find it to be absolutely worth listening to!
