5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-01-09

I was thoroughly pleased with this purchase. One of the best CD's in my collection. Very soothing to listen to. I was never a great Beatles fan, but listening to this rendition of their works was extemely pleasing.
I highly recomend it.

5 out of 5 stars An Orchestral Extravaganza.......2006-07-03

John Rutter is one of today's leading composers and arrangers of music for chorus and orchestra. Some of his best works are featured in this instrumental album played with a lush flavor. But the highlight is a concerto arrangement of top Beatle's songs played in a symphonic mode featuring two pianos. You have the feel of the great master composers and the fun of listening to an unbelievable transition from rock to classical. Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, and Can't Buy Me Love sound like they're straight from Carnegie Hall Steinways. A most unusual and beautiful instrumental album.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......2005-11-30

Ever since I heard the Beatles Concerto being used to help raise money on our local NPR station, I had to have Distant Land. Needless to say, I coudn't get the Orlando NPR people to give me any help, wouldn't answer my eMail requests for the source, so it took some searching to add the disc to my collection.
It's like Sterling on Siver.............CTP

4 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasure.......2005-08-21

I have sung many of Rutter's choral works and arrangements, but I never knew that he had done orchestral works until I heard the Beatles Concerto on the radio. I had to have this album, and I was not disappointed. Distant Land is inspiring, the other works are very pleasurable, and as an old baby boomer Beatles fan, I just love to sing along with the concerto, even if he did steal shamelessly from Chopin and Rachmaninof for some of the piano interludes. I have searched for a copy of the score, but I can't yet find it.

4 out of 5 stars Rutter... without words.......2005-08-05

Beautiful instrumental setting. Distant Land (the first track) is surely the highlight of the album. The Five Meditations are also very pleasant to listen to. The suite for strings is great to if you like a little bit of "Modern influence". The Suite Antique is fun but sometimes it sounds "awkward" as the "baroque style" instrumentation and the "contemporary" musical themes clash from time to time. The Beatles Cto is a curiosity. Great if you like to collect all these type of Beatles arrangements (baroque style, classical style, string quartet settings, etc.)

5 out of 5 stars Soft Guitar.......2006-03-04

If you like soft guitar music or the Beatles or both, this is the recording for you. I like both. Playing it in the background as I work or play on the computer has become a delightful habit. The calm sound of Neil Hogan's solo guitar also takes some of the tension out of driving. I just ordered another copy of the CD to keep in the car.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sound, but at this price only meant for the true fanatic.......2006-07-18

Many other reviewers here on Amazon have done a sufficient job of telling you about the contents of this set, but the ultimate question that needs answering is: Do you really need to own this set?

If you're a casual or mildy fanatic fan, the answer is probably a "no." It's an expensive set to say the least. You are paying for 22 CDs containing 2 songs each. Depending on where you buy this set, you are paying (on average) $7-10 per disc...or $3.50-$5.00 per song! Also, all of these tracks can be found on the 13 original albums and the two compilation discs (Past Masters 1 and 2). You can actually buy the 13 original albums and two compilation discs as a package deal for just a little more than what this singles box set will cost...and will end up with all of the officially released songs, not just the 48 songs that were released on singles in the UK.

If you are an obsessed fan or a raving lunatic (like myself), you'll want to own this set, however. While it's nice to have the box and the 22 individual sleeves recreating the artwork in the singles, the real strength of the set is the sound quality. All of the singles (with the exception of the last couple of singles, which were stereo only) are presented in their original mono mixes, just as released in UK. While some people view "mono" as a dirty word, it really is the best way to hear these singles...as the Beatles and George Martin invested most of their time on the mono mixes, with stereo mixes made later (almost as an after thought). As others have pointed out, songs like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" which sound full and bright in mono, sound rather thin and weak in the stereo mixes presented on the Past Masters compilations (and on the "1" CD, unfortunately).

In summary, casual Beatles fans can steer clear of this box. Diehards and fanatics, however, may find this box set will be a valuable addition to their collection. If you can find a slightly used copy on the second-hand market for much cheaper, even better.

1 out of 5 stars The quality of the songs is excellent...but a waste of money if you already have the collection of CD's.......2005-07-22

Look....dont be just another fool parted with their hard earned money.....if you already have the cd's....of all the music THE BEATLES released.....you're either a chump...or your bankroll exceeds your common sense....

I love THE BEATLES...but am sick of all the same material being duplicated to death....just anoth marketing hoax to keep the bucks flowing in

5 out of 5 stars Highly Priced - but awesome!.......2005-02-02

I was a little hesitant to buy this due to the "extremely" high price, but I took the plunge.

I'm glad I did... the mono mixes of most of these tracks ROCK.

My favorites are Paperback Writer/Rain, Revolution that screams out of your speakers, and I Feel Fine/She's A Woman.

You really need to be a Beatles fan is you are going to spend the dough on this though.

Think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilled, but it's expensive.......2004-06-16

The Beatles SINGLES COLLECTION is a very pricey set of the 22 British singles. Each of the 22 discs is comprised of the two songs from the corresponding original 45 rpm single along with the British-single artwork. (In America, we had different artwork and, to some degree, different singles.)

I bought this for one reason: to finally get the glorious mono versions of many of these songs on CD. Scores of us older Beatles fanatics--those of us who grew up as fans of the band in the 60s--bought the mono versions of these songs and became accustomed to their clear, full, focused, and balanced sound. George Martin spent the majority of time working on the mono mixes and comparatively little time on the stereo. Mono was, by far, the norm in those days; meticulous work and many hours went into making the mono mixes sound perfect. And they still do sound perfect. In fact, they still sound shockingly superior to the stereo versions in most cases. Why?

George Martin recorded the vocals on a separate track from the backing so that, in the final mix, the vocals would not become buried and the engineer would have the means to adjust their volume. Because of this, Martin's mono mixes were superb. But when it came to stereo mixing, the vocal track was sometimes shoved to one side of the stereo picture, giving an unnatural, lopsided left/right channel separation and making the vocals sound detached from the rest of the music. To make matters worse, the drums and bass--key instruments from which rock bands get their power--were usually shoved far left, robbing the music of much of its strength. (An example of this is the egregious stereo version of "Day Tripper.") Indeed, the stereo versions of many a Beatles tune sound artificial, unbalanced, and anemic.

The lack of time and effort spent on mixing the pre-1969 stereo versions reflects just how unimportant they were considered to be. It is documented that five songs from the BEATLES FOR SALE album were remixed for stereo in half an hour. As The Beatles recorded REVOLVER, showing more and more interest in the mix sessions, their attention was focused on the mono mixes. Even during the recording of SGT. PEPPER'S, the band members were all present for the mono mixes--the stereo being done in their absence. Moreover, when MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR was released in America, the stereo version of the album had mock-stereo versions of "Penny Lane," "Baby, You're A Rich Man," and "All You Need Is Love" because stereo versions did not yet exist for those songs. "All You Need Is Love" was mixed for stereo in October 1968 for inclusion on the YELLOW SUBMARINE album. But "Penny Lane" and "Baby, You're A Rich Man" did not receive stereo remixes until late 1971!

Many of the mono versions in this collection can be found elsewhere (either on the CDs of the pre-1965 British albums or on various compilations), so my reasons for obtaining this set are as follows:

Here, we get actual versions of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy" used for the original single, sounding fabulous and in mono. The grossly inferior stereo mixes on PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE are not the versions that sold millions, as the notes deceptively imply.

On PAST MASTERS, we are given the stereo "I Feel Fine," which has the drums and bass far left, the guitars far right, and the vocals--sounding abnormally detached and somewhat cavernous--in the middle. How realistic the mono sounds in comparison: power coming from the rhythm section, Ringo's magnificent drumming dancing around the vocals as it should, and the total sound focused and balanced (as if the band were right in front of us!).

Though the stereo version of "Ticket To Ride" improves upon the previous stereo mixes, the mono version reveals the degree to which the divine interplay of the rhythm section--especially Ringo's contagious drumming--is masked on the stereo by the peculiar channel separation. The mono gives us an astounding difference in power. The stereo version of "Yes It Is" sounds hollow and misshapen, almost a mutilation of the gorgeous piece of music presented on the mono track.

Many of us were infuriated when PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO gave us the stereo versions of "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer," probably the two most disappointing mixes of all. In both cases--and to a shocking degree!--the anemic and gimmicky stereo mixes sap this incredible music of its original power. Though I still own the original 45s of both, how thankful I am to finally own the mono versions on CD!

I slightly prefer the stereo "Help!" (found on the HELP! CD) to the mono version, which was released as the single. The stereo is a different take: John sounds more involved, the whole track is clearer, and the added tambourine on the choruses makes those sections even more infectious. I also prefer the stereo versions of "Get Back" and "Don't Let Me Down," the first Beatles single to be released in stereo rather than mono. (In this set, we get the mono mixes.) Finally, "Something," "Come Together," and "Let It Be" were originally released in stereo, and that's what we get here.

To those who have longed for the mono versions, I say only: Well, here they are but they are indeed expensive. Unfortunately, it's the only way that some of these masterpieces can be had. If you are a Beatles fan and have not heard many of these mono versions (and if the price is not a problem), go for it; the difference in the quality of these mono-mixed gems will truly astound you.

5 out of 5 stars Oh YES!!!! GREATEST SINGLES COLLECTION OF ALL TIME!!!!.......2001-08-30

Well this is it. The greatest collection of singles of all time! This box will make you smile all the way through! From the greatest rock group of all time comes 22 CD versions of their original 45's. The box has a few rarities included. Inside you will find the original monophonic 45 mix of 'Help!' which features a different lead vocal from John Lennon. Also included are the superior monophonic mixes of 'I Feel Fine', 'She's A Woman', 'Day Tripper', 'Paperback Writer', 'All You Need Is Love', 'Lady Madonna', 'Revolution' (be ready for a hurricane when this one comes on). In the USA, 'Get Back' was the Beatles first stereo single. In the UK, it was 'Ballad Of John & Yoko'. Included here are the UK mono mixes of 'Get Back and 'Don't Let Me Down'. Each single comes with a picture sleeve. The only annoying thing about that is EMI used the same photos used on the 20th anniversary singles from the 1980's. The box is rather attractive even if EMI has used that layout a few thousand times in the past as well. Perhaps in the near future, EMI can include 'Free As A Bird' and 'Real Love'. That would be rather nice.

5 out of 5 stars Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) / A Collection of Beatles Oldies (1966).......2007-06-13

Exceptional CD. Exceptional material; sound and stereo separation. All of these Russian CD are very hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Sounded fine to me!.......2007-02-08

Maybe I am just not sophisticated enough to talk about highs and lows and woofers and tweeters and what did or did not happen when something was remastered. However I did not see anywhere where it claimed that this product was remastered. I bought it. It sounded fine. It was a good deal. Better than my old scratchy LPs, and my 8 track player no longer works. Call me simple-minded if you wish, but I thought that this was good music for a good price.

1 out of 5 stars great material poorly remastered.......2007-01-25

The original material, of course, is as good as anything ever recorded. Unfortunately it has been remastered by deaf engineers. The dynamic processing is so poor that they cut off the beginning and ending of the songs. They boosted the high frequencies so there is no bottom to the mix. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for the box set from capitol.

5 out of 5 stars the official Russian releases...awesome sounding and best value for the money.......2006-10-27

Okay, I bought this at a secondhand shop along with several others from the same Russian series. The series made by Maximum CD in Russia, are the official series available there and in the Baltic states. each CD consists of 2 albums each! Most of them come with bonus tracks. And all have the original unaltered backcovers in the packaging. I eventually bought 13 of them with the exception of a Hard Day's Night and Help! Both of which come with the US and UK releases! The sound is superb, the price is right, and they make the International versions( EMI/apple) look cheap and crappy. Which is embarrassing for the folks at EMI which can't can't anything right (see reviews on the latest Capitol Albums volume 2 and you'll know what I'm talking about)..
If youre lucky enough to find this, buy this. Its a limited edition, even in Russia, where everything changes at a dizzying pace, so they could be collectors' someday. 10 out of 5 stars. A job superbly done by the cool people at Maximum CD. Awesome

    5 out of 5 stars Mono recordings.......2004-03-21

Actually, to answer another reviewers question about the sound quality, this box set is currently the only way to get the singles in mono. Consensus by collectors is that the mono sound is preferable for probably at least the first 13 of these 22 singles, possibly for many more. Therefore, a must for collectors.
Also, please note that the original singles were issued without picture sleeves, excepting Strawberry Field/Penny Lane, which looked very cool, and Let It Be/You Know My Name, which looked very similar to the Let It Be album. These picture sleeves are therefore from later reissue pressings of the singles, or specially constructed for the box set.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly a Guilty Pleasure.......2003-05-07

Sure, these songs are all available on CD elsewhere, but in this CD Singles Collection, you get the original release artwork from all 22 Beatle singles in one package. Purists may want to seek out the original boxed set on 45 RPM records, but this collection is a great way to get all of The Beatle "singles" and their matching picture covers on CD.
It is fasinating to flip through these discs and see the changes the Beatles went through from "Love Me Do" in 1962 to Let It Be" in 1970. I am a Beatle fan from "way back" and this collection is for me, a fun addition to the rest of the Beatles Albums and past masters on CD. A guilty pleasure. Sometimes it is just so nice to indulge.

    2 out of 5 stars is this a waste?.......2003-02-10

Why spend so much money on all the songs that are available elsewhere? Why buy so many discs with only two tracks on each disc? That's a waste of CD space. Also, they don't tell you if it's the same quality or same recording as the normal masters.

5 out of 5 stars Mono is not just for people deaf in one ear........2006-12-03

The simple fact is, these original British MONO mixes sound much, much better than the "primitive stereo" US releases. Back in 1962-63 Rock and Roll was new and "stereo" was even newer. People didn't have Ipods, satellite radio, or 19-channel home theater systems. We (yes, "we!") had AM radios and portable record players. Even our parents' home "Hi-Fi" was usually mono. And that's something George Martin and the Beatles had to consider when intentionally mixing their music in Mono. Let's face it, commercial "stereo" technology was in its infancy and it would take several years of growth before it sounded even close to realistic. Compared to modern recordings, many of Rock's early stereo and "simulated stereo" recordings sound unnatural with guitar/vocals hard-left in one speaker and bass/drums hard right in the other and pretty much nothing going on in the middle. Played on a modern system, these original mono mixes actually sound like a band playing right in front of you. (Especially if you turn it up! C'mon, it's the Beatles!) Instruments and vocals are bright and clear and and everything is nicely centered. I think you'd be very pleasantly surprised at the overall improvement in sound quality.

Actually, ALL of the Beatles' music was mixed in mono for release in the UK, even the later true stereo releases, but, no, the UK mono versions are not "easily found on other [US] albums." I've managed to find all the UK mono albums through "Let It Be" and have compared them to the US stereo versions and I personally prefer the UK monos. (Frankly, "Abbey Road" and the "White Album" sound just fine in stereo. I guess by '68 they were finally getting the hang of it!) If you're interested, check Google and Yahoo for "Beatles Mono" for more detailed info on the subject and for product sources.

OK, so the early UK monos sound a lot better than the early US stereos. As for the "package," well, yeah, it was definitely marketed to "Collectors." The original 12 4-song British EPs (Extended Play vinyl records) are duplicated here on CDs in cardboard sleeves that mimic the original record jackets. Also included is the original 6-song EP release of "Magical Mystery Tour" on 2 separate mono and stereo CDs in a nice fold-out that looks like the LP jacket. (The US "Magical" had songs added by Capitol to fill out an album length.) The last disc contains "rare" UK stereo versions of 4 B-sides. Then there's the the nice black storage box that looks like one I used to keep my 45s in back in my misspent youth, oh so long ago(!)

If you don't have any audiophile-wannabe tendencies and you're content with the US stereo versions that you've probably grown up with, then no, I don't suppose you need this collection. But, if you'd like at least some of your "golden oldies" to sound more natural and realistic then go for it. And as for the expense, do you really expect to pay full price for something on Amazon?

3 out of 5 stars Great for collectors, but...........2004-11-18

Overpriced. I only own this set because, twelve years ago, a local branch of a major retail chain had this mismarked with the "1" accidentally left off of the then-$150 price tag (then it became a heck of a deal!). You can pretty much get any of these songs on all of the other lower-priced Beatles CDs out there. There are, however, some great carrots for collectors in the form of the mono mixes, especially on the Magical Mystery Tour disc (which is actually presented in stereo AND mono).

While the first seven discs contain widely-available mono mixes, the final eight discs contain mono tracks unavailable anywhere else. Some of these mixes are significantly different from the stereo mixes. This is nowhere more evident on "I Am the Walrus", in which the mono mix contains a couple of extra bars in the middle of the song.

Over all, a ripoff for non-completists but almost worthwhile for obsessive collectors.

1 out of 5 stars overpriced just got a new meaning.......2004-11-14

great songs. but to be got on the original albums for a lot less than this extreme overpriced set

5 out of 5 stars Beatles fan from day one.......2003-03-20

This box set is just as delightful as it was way back in the 60's when the Beatles hit the airwaves. Even the mono songs sound excellent! Packaging is not as important as what is inside the box. These songs brought back many fond memories and I would highly recommend it.

This is sooooo bad it makes me laugh. The enthusiasm is gone. Just when you expect to feel a tingle up your spine from the original beat the tempo changes in the most disappointing way. One star is one too many.
