About the Artist
Kerry Christensen, one of the world's best Alpine yodelers, was raised on a potato farm in Grace, Idaho and had to wander quite a distance to discover his passion - yodeling! It was during his travels to Austria in 1976 that he discovered the folk music that would be his life. Armed with recordings of the great yodelers, Kerry returned from Europe, determined to master this ancient art--and he did. While driving the family tractor around and around the potato fields, he practiced many hours a day. He drove his father crazy and was banished to practicing in the garage, but to no avail, as yodeling carries very well.

Kerry's career really soared when Disney World in Orlando, Florida hired him to work at the German Pavilion of the Epcot Center in 1984 . He was the Disney World Yodeler from 1984 to1990 and the leader of Biergarten band for several years.

After his experience at Disney, Kerry headed out on his own and has had great success as one of only two or three professional, full-time yodelers in the United States. You will find him now at various folk festivals around world.

"Yodeling from the Old West to the Alps" contains a fairly even mix of these two kinds of yodeling, plus a few that defy categorization, like the "Farmer's Jazz Yodel" (an interesting juxtaposition) and the "Cajun Yodel" (I didn't know they yodeled in Louisiana, either).

In general, I very much prefer Alpine yodeling to western yodeling, so my opinion of this album is biased. Many of the western songs are too slow for my liking, and contain little or no (like "Timber Trail") yodeling. These songs would, however, be wonderful for fans of old western movies, as they are very evocative of that feel.

There are some amazing tracks on this CD. "Tiroler Kirschen" contains one of the most amazing yodeling displays I've ever heard. Christiansen shows in this song his amazing control and yodeling dexterity...it's almost like a yodeling tongue twister, and that song alone nearly warrants purchasing the entire album.

There are two songs from "The Sound of Music," which are both very well executed. "Edelweiss" contains a Kerry-Kerry duet, which works well, and "Lonely Goatherd" is very cool, and an appropriately comical interpretation of the song.

The other especially noteworthy piece is "Berg Auf," which has a great beat (makes you want to dance) and some amazing yodeling.

Overall, it's a good CD, and it's definitely worth owning if you are a yodeling fan. But unless if you particularly like old western music, I would start with "Hooked on Yodeling" and "Volksmarsch" (and, of course, "U2 Can Yodel," which I believe every human being should own).
