Time Peace from 1997 was singer-songwriter Terry Callier's first studio recording in almost 17 years. The Chicago-based Callier is an urban folk-jazz artist whose first album was recorded in 1964. He also had success as a songwriter with the Dells, who scored a hit with his song, "The Love We Had Stays on My Mind." On this album, Callier's voice reveals great depth while several of Chicago's finest musicians (particularly Eric Hochberg on bass) provide a stirring and seductive backdrop. This powerful recording also features the tenor saxophone of legendary jazzman Pharoah Sanders. Evocative songs like "Lazarus Man" and "Coyote Moon" are mature compositions from this veteran folk troubadour. Callier's lucid storytelling and rich, dark voice make Time Peace a compelling comeback effort. --Mitch Myers

A wonderful musical journey.......2006-03-21
I discovered Tahleel Terry Callier's music after hearing People Get Ready/Brotherly Love on WCLK in Atlanta. His melodic tone, musical vibe, and powerful lyrics left a strong imprint on my soul. I was determined to know more about him. Timepeace is a beautiful CD with many really wonderful songs...Keep Your Heart Right, Lazarus Man, People Get Ready, Timepeace...... If only I could discover music like this more often. What a treasure! I can't wait to catch him live in the US or take a trip to the UK. Thank you Tahleel Terry Callier. The Creator has blessed you tremendously!
A voice that could command a God... and Does.......2005-11-16
The title comes from an obscure line that cult writer Frank Miller wrote for a fictional character.
He wrote of this character:
"He has a voice that could command a God... and does"
It says much about the voice of Terry Callier that that line defines him as well as anything can.
I caught a couple of his songs on a local jazz station, the soul anthem AFRICAN VIOLET (from FIRE & ICE)and the equally amazing DANCING GIRL (from WHAT COLOR IS LOVE), without argument from me two of the greatest songs ever written or sung by anyone, at anytime.
Those two were enough to start me on a Callier binge, buying everything I could of his. I'm up to 7 CDs and counting.
TIMEPEACE his come back CD, is not his best CD, has no songs of the wrenching power of those previously mentioned. Really a bookend Cd for me, with the first two and the last two songs being the best, and the middle ones needing to various degrees, grow on you. But even average Callier is buoyed by that voice, that vibrates on so many levels.
But coming off a layoff of many years, it's an impressive rebirth, having double the number of songs of those previously mentioned albums. And would be followed in a scant few years, by my favorite Callier CD, solid from first song to last, even surpassing his classics of the 70s, the 2003 album SPEAK YOUR PEACE.
Any Callier item is worth your time, TIMEPEACE is no exception. Though if new to Callier, you may want to start with some of the other titles I mention. Recommended.
4.5 stars: I guess the '90s weren't all THAT bad musically..........2005-01-12
BUT WHY DID THIS ALBUM GO OUT-OF-PRINT!?!?!? Oh brother, THAT'S when you know good music just isn't in high demand these days. If you haven't gotten this one yet, do what I did: SCOUR THE USED CD/CLEARANCE BINS EVERYWHERE YOU GO!!! It's bad enough Terry Callier got slept on back in the day and even this time there's no exception. His unique blend of soul, folk, jazz, and blues is as timeless as it gets (not to mention having one of the most distinct singing voices around; he still sounds incredible for a man already pushing 60!).
Geez, my generation is currently being dumbed down by the onslaught of major labels consistently pushing bad music instead of being turned on to more artists like this guy. I only pray it's not too late to remedy what has become a VERY serious problem in recent years...
Sublimely beautiful - music to heal the soul.......2004-04-18
I was lucky enough to find a copy of this CD recently, and I agree with every word of Mitch Bogan's comment - it is sublimely beautiful, soaring, spiritual, uplifting and healing music. It is a crying shame to see this exceptional CD out of print. I can't understand why Terry Callier isn't a household name on both sides of the Atlantic - with the voice and heart of an angel, he certainly deserves to be. If you like folk, jazz, soul - or any kind of beautiful music! - then I implore you to track down a copy of this CD, and spread the word. "In brightest day or darkest night / Don't give up the faith / Keep your heart right... Keep your heart right."
Generosity of Spirit.......2002-09-14
Try as you might, you can't always escape the inane presence of Britney et al. But there is an antidote to be had. Slip this CD in the player and discover everything that's missing from what passes for popular music today. Hint: it has something to do with depth, wisdom, spirituality, musicality, and generosity of spirit. Indeed, listening to Terry Callier is a healing experience.
Callier creates a unique soul music, combining his own acoustic guitar and pliant vocals with more traditional jazz-based instrumentation. My favorite cut is Java Sparrow, an extended metaphor about the spiritual nature of human life, and the yearning for freedom from this material world. The final track features the tortured yet joyous cry of Pharoah Sanders' tenor sax, playing off another searching Callier vocal. TimePeace is the sound of an artist who ponders the highest aspects of life.
