The Red Crow
The Red Crow
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This 1990 release nicely mixes reels, jigs, and songs from the Celtic group whose career was about to peak with 1992's Harvest Storm and 1993's Island Angel. The Red Crow resembles other Altan albums in energy and traditional music selections but stands out for its variety of guest accompanists, which includes pianist S´amus Quinn, mandolin player Niall Toner, and keyboardist M´ire Breathnach. In fact, "Mallaí Chroich Shlí" is one of those rare--perhaps only--cuts where ambient synthesizer appears on an Altan song--and tastefully at that. Other highlights include the lovely "Tommy Bhetty's Waltz" and "Inis Dhún Rámha," dominated by a bouncing acoustic guitar. Overall, there's a great variety of hardcore Altan fun here with a bit of New Age softness and folkie flavor thrown in. --Karen Karleski

LIVE IN CONCERT .......2005-05-18
I had the honor of seeing Floyd play live in concert at the Indian fair in Oklahoma with my aunt. It was an experience and a huge honor to meet him and shake his hand. His music is very powerful and sends many political messages out. I love his music and actually had them on cassette tape. I finally found this on CD and am very excited to get it. For those who do not understand his music...it's and Indian thing..you wouldn't understand....ayyyee!!
Great music--one missing song.......2003-01-25
This is great music by Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, an American Indian singer-songwriter. Westerman's musical style is influenced mostly by folk and country performers, including his friend Kris Kristofferson. The songs are great, whether you are an activist or just a music lover.
This CD includes remakes of songs from Westerman's two albums: "Custer Died For Your Sins" from 1969 and "The Land is Your Mother" from somewhere around 1980. Though it is a remake, and Red Crow is older, he still sounds good. Like another reviewer, I'd still prefer the originals, but not by much. For some reason, the order of the songs is different from the original "Custer..." album, which can be distracting if you've heard the original many times, but isn't a big deal.
The bigger problem with this CD, and the reason I don't give it 5 stars, is that one song is missing. The original "Land is Your Mother" album included a song called "Bring Me to My Knees". It was one of my favorites on the album and I don't know why it was left out. Other than this one substantial oversight, this is a great CD, one I highly recommend.
rolling with Red Crow.......2000-11-24
Man, just to see the cover of the original album in CD-size is a trip... my pal in NYC gave me a vinyl copy of the original 1969 "Custer Died...," an album that still burns (as the previous reviewer Mr. Nakajima noted so accurately) with the Sacred Fire of hundreds of years of the White Man's oppression. Floyd (real name Red Crow) has written some timeless songs, all right... the 1st half of this CD is a remake (in its entirety) of the original LP, which Red Crow may not even have the copyrights to anymore (don't forget what the music business was like back then, with artists getting ripped off every second). John Prine (an equally as brilliant American Songwriter) just did the same thing with some of his older chestnuts, re-recording them for his new CD "Souvenirs," because (unbelievably) he doesn't own the rights to the original versions! Of his own songs! Atrocious... he (and any other songwriter who's been raped by the industry of their songs) should have some recourse; unfortunately re-doing the songs seems to be the only way.
But no worries... the re-makes are awesome in their own right because, as with Prine, Red Crow has lived inside these songs for decades and knows how to make 'em happen, you know? Guess what, I like some of the re-makes BETTER than the originals, especially "Here Come the Anthros" and "Missionaries." Floyd is top-drawer because he takes the country-ish, pedal-steel idiom (itself the cultural terrain of Whitey) and turns it in on itself, writing almost exclusively about how the White Man completely destroyed his people and, well, much of the world in general. Kinda like a cross between Johnny Cash and Chief Seattle.
The 2nd half of the CD is Floyd's other album, "The Land is Your Mother," which sounds like it was done in the early-to-mid 1970s (his voice sounds closer to the original "Custer..," while the re-done version has him older and in deeper, raspier, more wizened voice). Standouts are many: nice Traditional Native tunes, the "B.I.A." blues, and a song in which Floyd asks us, "How long have you been blind? I've been counting a long, long time...". My favorite so far is "Quiet Desperation," a ballad about an Indian leaving the Big City he doesn't understand to return to the Land. Overall I'd say get this CD and anything else you can dig up on the legendary Red Crow, who many of you may know from his acting adventures in "Dances with Wolves" and one particularly wild 3-part episode of "The X-Files". Maybe someday even the original "Custer Died for Your Sins" will be reissued, who knows?....
Excellent, though not as powerful as the original.......2000-08-08
If you've heard the 1969 version of "Custer" than you may be disappointed. Westerman sounds a little downbeat compared with the fiery AIM/Alcatraz sort of spirit of the original. But, don't walk away yet! This is a terrific batch of recordings. And if "Custer" isn't as good, "La Tierra es Tu Madre" is a wonderful recording. Take a listen.

Customer Reviews:
A great CD from one of Ireland's greatest bands.......2000-12-20
Altan has been promoting the traditional music of Donegal for well over a decade now. The Donegal style of Irish fiddle music is known for its high energy, its aggressive bowing, its relation to Scottish music, and for types of tunes such as "Highlands," "Lancers," and "Germans," which are not found in the counties to the South, and it is Donegal's fiddle music that predominates Altan's recordings. The melodic heart of this album is the twin fiddling of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and Paul O'Shaughnessy, and the flute playing of Mairead's late husband, Frankie Kennedy. Ciaran Curran's bouzouki and Mark Kelly's guitar accompaniment, plus the accompaniment of various guests, are both driving and subtle. The musical sympathy between the musicians is evident in the way that Mhaonaigh's and O'Shaughnessy's different approaches to bowing blend in with and complement each other's, and how tight and polished, yet vibrant and alive this album is. This musical sympathy is not all that surprising, given that Altan's musicians have been playing together at pub sessions and festivals for many years prior to their decision to form a touring band. The Red Crow contains both tunes that are standards of the Donegal fiddler's repertoire, and Donegal settings of tunes known throughout Ireland. There are also some newly composed tunes, including the now widely popular Brenda Stubbert's reel, composed by Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland. Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh's beautiful, soulful voice is heard on several songs sung in Irish, and one in English. The Red Crow is at once exciting, polished, and well-balanced between types of tunes and songs. I agree with the reviewer who said this is Altan's finest recording to date. Its energy and selection of tunes is, I feel, unmatched by their other recordings. You may have your own favorite of Altan's. Certainly whichever of their albums you choose, you can't go wrong. Altan has many imitators, but there's nothing quite like the original.
A definite must buy!.......1999-09-09
An all-around great album filled with energy, zest, and beauty at every turn. In my opinion, Altan's finest album!
Excellent CD that displays a range of emotions........1998-12-30
This is one of the first Celtic CD's I ever purchased and although I now own all of Altan's CD's this one remains among my favorites. From the high energy reels like Yellow Tinker, Brenda Stubbert's and The Emmyvale through the more mellow jigs, slip jigs, and Tommy Bhetty's Waltz to the traditional songs sung by Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, this CD will have you going from dancing to near tears and back again in less than an hours time. The fiddle of Ni Mhaonaigh and flute of her late husband Frankie Kennedy entwine as one instrument. The backing fiddle, guitar and bouzouki work of Paul O'Shaughnessy, Mark Kelly, and Ciaran Curran, respectively, provide just the right bottom for each tune. I think Altan ranks right up there with the Bothy Band when it come to classic Irish groups and this CD really shows their talents!

Kris Kristofferson writes: “I Think Johnny Cash would be especially proud of this tribute album. Not just because of his high regard for Floyd Red Crow Westerman or his own life-long identification with Native Americans and commitment to their cause, but because it is such a respectful, loving portrayal of the man’s work. Floyd’s deep, powerful voice resonates with the truth. I had no idea he could sound so much like John.”
