Editorial Reviews

Recorded less than three years after their first rehearsal, this disc spotlights the building blocks of the group's later sound: sustained vocal harmony chords sung at full throttle. It begins with the group's namesake song and includes Reagon's tribute to Joanne Little, a couple of bluesy love songs, an adapted Langston Hughes poem, several hymns, and even a little piano. --Geoffrey Himes

Soulful and engaging.......2007-02-18
I first encountered Sweet Honey and the Rock in 2003 at Michigan Wymns Music Festival. They were fantastic. Recently, one of my chorus mates suggested the track I Remeber, I Believe as something we should sing in our spring concert. Our director agreed and I couldn't be more trilled. I purchased two copies of the CD, one for myself and one for the daughter of a friend of mine. It is a permanent part of my car audio collection. Try Sweet Honey out and you'll fall in love with their five part harmonies, their personal touch, and the sweet voices of a wonderful, soulful group of wymn.
Holy Music.......2006-08-14
I bought this CD for one song, We Are, a powerful anthem that I had been taught by a dear friend. However, every song on this CD is powerful in its own right and has served and nurtured me over time. Sweet Honey is an amazing a cappella musical group that has evolved out of the African American political and historical experience. With Sacred Ground, Sweet Honey focuses on the spiritual dimensions of political and social challenges such as prejudice and poverty. The result for me, is always a sense of renewal and energy that feeds the soul, soothes the heart and harmonizes mind and body. Sacred Ground is an invaluable CD for any one who works with dispirited and often disembodied people. While most "new age" music, emphasizes a certain spaciousness, Sacred Ground which has its roots in traditional gospel and folk music argues in favor of groundedness as a source of heartful strength. Its just this side of divine.
Great Pick.......2005-02-25
This is really the best. Great sound and beat. Excelent recording sound and meaningful music.
Voices of real angels!.......2002-10-04
I got hooked on "Sweet Honey..." several years ago when I an interview on NPR. This CD really shows off their voices. It also shows how 'into' this genre they are! Highly recommend this CD. Heck, I highly recommend all their CDs!
An Amazing Work.......2000-09-26
I cannot express how grateful I am for this CD. It while I was listening to the amazing voices of these women that God helped me find my way out of a depression (I know it sounds corny, but it's true). While nothing compares to seeing this group perform live, all of their albums are incredible and a must to own. This one has a very spiritual focus, while others sometimes focus more on secular problems. No matter which album you choose, if you like music that is beautiful in every sense of the word, Sweet Honey in the Rock will not dissapoint you.

being the mother of 8 children it is hard to please everyone (ages 18 to newborn)in the car at the same time. this cd is one of the few cds we have that we do not skip over songs. we love this cd.
What a wonderful CD to give as a present!.......1999-07-09
I love giving this cd as a gift, to teachers or childcare providers, or new moms. It's kids' music you can stand to hear over and over (and some of us know just how rare that is), and feel good about exposing kids to traditions and musical concepts they might not otherwise encounter. We listen to the numbers songs in the car, we sing the shoo-fly song when we go walking--it's been a gift to my little family to have these songs added to our lives.
Sweet Honey in the Rock is Fantastic!.......1999-01-04
Although folk isn't a style a music much heard by anyone but its devotees, there can be some real treasures in this section. Sweet Honey in the Rock is one of them. As a young teenager, I find that this music doesn't fit into the "fuddy-duddy" image that young people today think of as Folk. Sweet Honey provides you with cool, soulful tunes, with beat and fire to spare. Try listening to "Young and Positive", and see if that doesn't bolster your self-esteem. The complex harmonies appeal to me especially, since I am a singer, but to the uninitiated ear, they are pure ecstasy. This is a rare and amazing gem in the soup of today's music!

Not just for kids!.......2004-05-24
This album is a breath of fresh air in an age when so many parents buy records for their kids based on the brand name (Barney, Sesame Street) or perceived educational value (Baby Mozart). It teaches values and self-esteem, lessons that are good for any age (particularly in "Still the Same Me"). It even encourages listeners (children and adults) to pick up their things to a neat Caribbean swing ("Oh My Goodness, Look at This Mess!").
If you are buying this album for children, it would be best to listen to the album with them a few times. That way you can encourage them to clap along with the singing ("Tuwe Tuwe"), or even improvise their own rhythms along with the group (tracks 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16). Songs such as "We Shall Not Be Moved" may also turn into a valuable history lesson.
Songs such as "Nature Song" capture the wonder of childhood, and are great to listen to on sunny mornings. With or without children, this album is a good listen.
I love this CD!!!.......2004-05-04
Catchy tunes, GREAT lyrics, I really really really love this CD! I find myself singing these songs over and over in my head, all day long, and because they're such great songs, this is just fine!
Child-affirming.......2004-02-24
We got this CD as a gift, and are a "white bread" family. The songs are fun, much different than traditional kids music, have very positive messages from a child-raising perspective as well as from the perspective of being a child. Adults will enjoy this as much as children. I would love to take my 3 year old son to a Sweet Honey concert!
Affirming and Child Focused Music CD -- Best Ever!.......2003-10-12
We've been fans of Sweet Honey in the Rock for years. Now we have a child and as multi-racial same-gender couple raising a multi-racial child we want to find a music CD that can teach our child the fun of music and all the progressive values of affirming and respecting oneself and others. This CD is it. It has all the beautiful harmony Sweet Honey in the Rock is known for. The songs are so well written with great melody, rhythm and messages. We've done many "jam sessions" with our child playing this CD and he really enjoys them. We can't wait for him to understand the meaning of the lyrics when he grows up.
One great CD!!.......2001-11-17
This is the first SHIR CD i have gotten, but I have always loved them singing that song from the "Down in the Delta" CD. "A Patchwork Quilt" I believe it is called. On this CD, I love the Laughter Song, "We Shall Not Be Moved", and "Oh My GOodness, look at this mess", and "Goodnight". These ladies are singing without the benefit of instruments, and they are to truly be commended for it. It is very few people that can do that in this day and age. These ladies ought to be more popular and they are not. But I highly recommend this CD for those who have kids, as well for the kid in all of us. peace.

Sweet Honey in the Rock send their joyful noise throughout the audience on this soundtrack to the Raise Your Voice documentary, part of PBS's American Masters series. As the all-female a cappella group traces American gospel to its African roots, they all but dare listeners to resist becoming part of the music. On the environmentally conscious, central African "Chant," the singalong encircles the hall, providing a stirring response to Sweet Honey's call. A strong social conscience informs material such as "Joan Little," an expression of solidarity with an abused prisoner, and "The Ballad of Harry T. Moore," a tribute to a slain civil rights organizer. Instrumental backing propels the funky "Ballad of the Broken Word," written by Toshi Reagon, daughter of Sweet Honey founder Bernice Johnson Reagon. Yet as the soaring spirituality of "In the Upper Room with Jesus" attests, vocal power is all this group requires to overwhelm a responsive crowd. --Don McLeese
Album Description
Founded in 1963, this Grammy award winning group of talented, versatile women singer-songwriters creates a rich tapestry of sound steeped in the traditions of Black sacred music-spirituals, hymns, and gospel reaching into the more contemporary stylings of blues, jazz, hip-hop and R&B. For over three decades this actively touring group has, with great beauty, power, and expressiveness, inspired audiences with musical portrayals of struggle and triumph encouraging social and political activism.

The magic of Sweet Honey in the Rock lies in the pulse and spirit of the group's performances. No recording can totally re-create the net of energy this powerful collective of women's voices casts over its audience, but Live at Carnegie Hall comes darn close. Here the group's members are free to develop songs as long as the spirit moves them--much longer, typically, than on their studio albums. Listen to the driven growls in the traditional folk chant "Run, Run, Mourner Run," the solemn contemplation of "Wade in the Water," and the circular wails and stirring percussion of "Denko" to feel Sweet Honey's spirit pounding through your bones. Live at Carnegie Hall also features several instructive yet tender introductions from founder Bernice Johnson Reagon, an amazingly theatrical presentation of Sonia Sanchez's poem "Letter to Dr. Martin Luther King," and a jazzy a cappella version of Paul Elouard's sensual poem "Peace." --Sally Weinbach

Recorded in Manhattan on November 7, 1987, this double live album includes 70 minutes of music and spoken introductions. There's a representative balance of hymns, blues, protest songs, and Third World influences. The group's ability to stretch out songs is illustrated by a seven-minute version of "Wade in the Water" and an eight-minute version of "Letter to Dr. Martin Luther King" (one of three songs on the album composed for the PBS special The Dream and the Drum). --Geoffrey Himes

the energy of their live performance that comes across is amazing...the group is amazing and having had the luck to experience them live, to have a recording that matches that energy, majk & vitality is truly fortunate...

Every minute a pleasure.......2000-06-22
I was browsing Amazon to see if I could get my hands on this amazing CD. (I'm glad to know I can.) From beginning to end, each song is riveting and entertaining. "Beatitudes" is one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear. "Dear Martin" is a wonderful performance of a poem. If you enjoy a variety of music, incredible harmonies, and worldly, timely subjects, you'll love this CD.

Of course they're preachy--that's what preachers do. The long-running black women's a cappella group (plus an extra member who signs the songs in American Sign Language) is absolutely serious about their historically researched narratives of women and liberation: the struggle against oppression is serious business. But Bernice Johnson Reagon and the group she's led since 1973 also sing like the angels, with harmonies drawn from black American gospel and African traditional music, and when their voices fall to a charged hush, wailing and humming in solidarity, they're incredibly powerful. Selections draws on the group's first eight albums, including their long-out-of-print second disc, and it's almost all richly soulful and uplifting. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Rich a cappella brew close to the soul of the human condition.......2006-03-23
True originals, with African, gospel, country blues, folk all mixed deep in their rich a cappella brew. Rough and sometimes raw interplay of voices has the resonance of a more desperate than joyful revival. Studio and live tracks.
Disk 1. Polyphonic voices coalesce into communal rhythms, passion, determination, and remarkable beauty. Didactic, but who cares-everything else in the mix quickly shoves that aside. Raw cries from somewhere down deep and primeval, close to the soul of the human condition. Standouts: tr 4--Children; S: tr 11-Crying for freedom (full-tilt, high-energy gospell); tr 15--In the upper room (stately doowop gospel) [65:24] [66:03]
Disk 2. Strong flavor of rural blues, chants, field songs, and moans. S: tr 1-Testimony. tr 4-Meyango (Kahlil Gibran). tr 6-As long as I have breath in my body. tr 7-No images. tr 10-Biko (Caribbean lilt in justice song). tr 17-Breaths. [64:57]
Underrated Accapella.......2005-01-12
Arguably, the best accapella group, ever. Period.
This retrospective of this dynamic group reflects their extensive vocal range (even sounding like ambulances on one track!) and their righteous goals: reaching back to honor and remember the past, while pushing feminist and peace-loving values foward.
Absolutely, incomparable.
If you've come upon this group's section by chance or Amazon recommendation, you are in luck. Please, pick them up. You won't be disappointed.
Delicious, perfect, and powerful.......1998-10-29
Oh those voices.....deep harmonies, heavy rhythms, and rich timbres--just like angels. Sweet Honey in the Rock gives any song, both new and old, its own charm and artistry. I'd recommend this to anyone with a taste for beauty and strength.
Touches your soul........1998-07-04
If you were touched by the civil rights movement, if you feel you are living in the 90's with a 60's political spirit, this album will touch you like no other. Sweet Honey kept, and keeps, that spirit alive. A wonderful retrospective of their work. "We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes" says it all.

Celebrating 30 years as an unparalleled music group with this release, Sweet Honey in the Rock demonstrate again that they are an American treasure. While technically proficient a cappella singers, Sweet Honey are so much more than a study in vocal pizzazz. The women do indeed gather and tell stories for the generations, chronicling modern life and its struggles and victories. Sweet Honey mask nothing emotionally and draw the listener into each saga, whether they're lamenting violence in the title track, detailing the history of voting rights (or lack thereof) in Washington, D.C., in "Give the People Their Right to Vote," or sharing the tragic tale of a civil rights activist in "Ballad of Harry T. Moore." Founder Bernie Johnson Reagon leads her group through a diversity of styles, ranging from the '70s soul sound of "Solid Gold" to the gospel of "Come unto Me." After three decades, Sweet Honey are as relevant and fresh as ever. --Michael Lyttle
Album Description
30th anniversary album presents Sweet Honey in their award-winning style with a contemporary sound. Features predominantly new, 2003 original material, with contributions by Toshi Reagon written especially for Sweet Honey. Earthbeat/Rhino.

The Women Gather Sweet Honey in the Rock.......2005-08-29
I'm a new fan of Sweet Honey in the Rock, so wasn't sure what to expect from the cd, having only seen them on public tv. Their music is brilliant, unique, all a capella; not easy listening, however. Very political.
As Always, the best.......2003-02-01
Sweet Honey delivers message of love, struggle and social resonsibility through their rich, stirring a capella vocals, and celebrate 30 years together with this new CD. This one presents a wide range of styles and vocalizations of mostly contemporary songs written by the group, or new arrangements of old songs, such as Isaac Watts' "That Awful Day Will Surely Come." They address everything from addition to voter rights (or lack thereof) in the District of Columbia. A lush and thought-provoking CD as only Sweet Honey can create.
What a treat!.......2003-01-30
I've been a fan of these phenomenal women for some time now and I was thrilled to see they released a 30th anniversary album. The CD is an inspiring and uplifting experience from start to finish and I cannot get enough of it. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE, no matter your age or musical tastes. What a treat!

Sweet Honey in the Rock emphasizes rhythmic and sing-along numbers on its first children's album. Most songs have a progressive message, but the music itself has a contagious energy on songs like "The Little Red Caboose," "Juba," and "Amen." Civil Rights chants are mixed with African stories and a Georgia Sea Island chant, and young singers from Washington's Adam Elementary School join in on five numbers. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Music for mamas and babies.......2001-10-05
My close friend titled my birthday copy of this album, "Music for Mamas and Babies." And I, the mama, have played and sung the album with my two children and by myself every day for days at a time. The words that come to mind -- harmony, happiness, thinking, learning, singing -- may be words that you like to hear. Then you would also like to hear a new version of "Cumbaya," a story about the children's song of Ono, Africa, how to fall in love "two by two," and how to make a drum. Sweet Honey's vocal harmonies, unique arrangements, accapella performances, non-accapella performances, commitment to equality, and rich story-telling make this an album to listen to past the time your babies are babies.
Movin' music!.......2000-06-21
This CD will have you singing along in no time! It's jubilant sounds and children participation are so upbeat anyone would smile! These women produce fabulous music even for non gospel music lovers! A great CD for children, and many songs they can sing and move to.

In their first 25 years, 22 different women sang in Sweet Honey in the Rock. That floating membership bespeaks not artistic turmoil, but the vitality of the band's communal, participatory democracy. No one singer dominates; the individual nuances of the five voices are preserved within the whole. The shape and sound of Sweet Honey's music--a daring survey of gospel, jazz, and African chanting--is itself political, but the group is still anchored by founder Bernice Johnson Reagon's vibrato-rich baritone, whether in her bold leads or doo-wop harmonies. To celebrate their silver anniversary, the group presents 13 new songs, mostly sung a cappella save some African drumming and tambourine, and focusing on original compositions with messages as intense as anything they've recorded. The most successful pieces, however, transcend the hectoring tone of songs such as "Greed" and "Run." And the biggest surprise comes in their doo-wop arrangement of Thomas A. Dorsey's "Standing By the Bedside of a Neighbor," in which the spiritual and the political merge seamlessly. --Roy Kasten

An excellent collection.......2002-10-04
This CD brings almost all of the ladies that have ever been a part of "Sweet Honey..." together. It is great to sit back and just listen to the music flow together. This CD and their "Sacred Ground" CD hasn't left the player since I got them!
Music for the soul.......2000-03-08
I have had the honor of hearing SHIR, live for the past 3 years, since I have been a student here at FAMU. And I have been moved completely out of my seat each time. I actually felt the music in my heart, like my heart was the drum, my blood was the harmonious rhythm that flowed, and eyes that view their grace as they sang, was the entrance that allowed my insides to rumble the moment they open their mouths. I would like to encourage SHIR, to continue to provide the world with what I consider REAL music.
inspiring.......1999-12-07
sweet honey in the rock does it again with an uplifting , thought-provoking, inspiring, beautiful collection of music. i found the use of percussion on "we are the ones" and "run" to complement the beautiful vocals very nicely. these two and others such as "sound bite from beijing" and "greed" are refreshingly thought-provoking in a positive way compared to much "popular" music i have listened to. their version of bob marley's "redemption song" is also very impressive
A Weakened Sweet Honey, with too much Gloss.......1999-07-07
As a big fan of Sweet Honey and owner of virtually all their CDs, I was disappointed with "twenty-five." While still delivering beautiful harmonies, Sweet Honey have written songs that are a bit more pop-ish than earlier works and the strongest songs seem to be the ones with more concentration on the solo singer rather than the innovation that comes with the group making melodies a cappella. If you're looking for a great Sweet Honey CD, go to some of their stronger works, such as: Selections 1976-1988, Sacred Ground, and In This Land.
Truly Great!!!.......1999-06-06

This is the best Sweet Honey in the Rock album of all. The songwriting stresses description over prescription, raising questions rather than pushing answers, on songs about AIDS, the homeless, racism, and sexism. Never have the group's arrangements been as ambitious or as successful as they are here. Highlights include Kahlil's nine-minute scat piece, "Fulani Chant," gorgeously re-harmonized versions of songs by R&B star Donny Hathaway and folk figure Buffy Saint Marie, and a pair of deep blues. --Geoffrey Himes

Absolutely Beautiful.......2001-03-27
This stands among one of my favorite Sweet Honey recordings. "I Be Your Water" is one of thier songs that sticks in one's mind after hearing it. There is so much her to enjoy and to educate. I'd advise just about anyone to give it a listen.
Phenomenal.......1999-08-01
This CD is gospel, spirituals, African music, and creative innovation, and brought to life through the remarkably beautiful voices of Sweet Honey In The Rock. The music is universal--familiar, but not ordinary--and the lyrics profound and intelligent. I am in general not a buyer of gospel type music, but this is one of my all-time favorite CDs. Some of the songs are stunningly beautiful.

When I found this web site I was looking for some albums of Sweet Honey In the Rocks that I don't have yet. I was surprised that no one reviewed this album, and gave it the recognition it deserves. This is a fantastic album of strong passion and strength. You'll be introduced to some traditional African songs as well as some new. This is worth the price!!
