The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21

I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.

good album, great performers.......2002-03-28

I have really enjoyed this album, it has some really good sounds, and G.O.T. sounds even better live. They are great guys, they played a show for our youth group and they really put on a good performance even though it was a small crowd.
I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys rock.

Got G.O.T.?.......2001-05-12

In the recent listen I had of Green Olive Tree's "Things I Tried To Be" I have found a great band that is gradually getting harder... in a good way. I heard these guys in concert a year or so ago then again this past semester when they visited Ouachita Baptist University for a Missions Benefit concert. Not only had they improved their sound from good to great, but they put on a really good show (too bad there wasn't more of the college campus present). Their hit "Universe" is emotionally pulling both lyrically and musically. All I have to ask is: "Got G.O.T.?"

Ah, the Green Olive Tree.......2001-03-13

I have known about Green Olive Tree for about three years now. This band is made up of such a group of awesome guys, I've known the drummer since grade school and I met the guitar player and the singer in high school. I bought their first CD the night it came out. I loved it I had no clue how talented these guys really were. But that does not even come close to what I see now in their new album. I picked it up as soon as I possibly could and waited on it for about three months ever since I found out that they got an entire album signed under Syntax Records. I picked up the CD greatful that Cacophony and Enter Golgotha were of the song list. Those are truly great songs and are well worth your time time to listen to. This CD is an incredible buy a value for every penny, I was so incredibly impressed with the talent portrayed on this amazing album. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a nice modern rock blend with meaningful vocals and a nice heavy sound but also light on a few tracks as well. I feel that no song ever performed by Green Olive Tree is as powerful as Enter Golgotha and I strongly recommend listening to the entire CD and I'm sure you will fall in love with it. GOT doesn't exactly follow any kind of set sound that I have heard mimcked entirely so I can only say it's heavy and punky and light at different spots throughout the album. So have a listen, buy the album and enjoy this wonderful sound.

Green Olive Tree has to be one of the best Rock bands around. Their stuff is not the run of the mill rock. They are very innovative. This album is very diverse but remains cohesive from beginning to end. I really enjoy the unique time signature changes and the varying vocal approaches. If you are a fan of plain good music, then Green Olive Tree belongs in your collection. IF you are a rock music fan then they belong in your collection. If you don't like music that is challening and meaningful then you might want to pass on this and pick up Britney Spears album.

I must say this CD is great. I love every song on the album. The lyrics in Formula are beautiful. Enter Golgotha is so powerful. Great job fellas! Keep up the good work! If you don't have this CD, you should buy it, immediately!

I've heard Yuval Ron's Ensemble at a Cultural Festival in Juarez, Mexico. They had some CD's to sell with them but they went off right away...i could not get a chance to buy one at that time...Fortunetely i found it at Amazon and now im enjoying this beautiful music from middle east.

The list of review excerpts is entirely accurate. The ensemble sets the tone of this album with a hauntingly sweet solo Armenian dudduk, which the ensemble soon joins into a nostalgic, slow dance. The oud continues the improvization, and before we are aware of it, we are transported to another place and time. The feeling and enchantment persists through the CD, whether clearly Israeli Jewish or Arab Sufi, or influenced by Turkish, Egypian, or Sefarad songs. The tempo is a fairly consistent andante, with an occasional allegro or largo. Do not expect rollicking dance music. The subtitle of "Sacred Music of the Middle East" is validated, for peace and brotherhood arises. Yuval Ron is a recipient of many grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation and has lectured extensively.
