Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ROBERT E. LEE COMES TO LIFE!.......2001-01-02

Jimerson has created a recording that gives the listener a wonderful sampling of the music Robert E. Lee would have heard during his lifetime, in a true period style. As a regular visitor to Lee's birthplace, I am impressed by and enjoyed the results of Jimerson's historical research at the Robert E. Lee archives at Stratford Hall.

2 out of 5 stars Not real great.......2000-11-23

Aside from the competent performances of Douglas Jimerson and Jill Worley, the singers and musicians on this CD are rather poor. But the recording is worse - poor quality, and done in such a way as to emphasize defects in the presentation. Whenever David Calib comes in with the drums, everything else is drowned out. Did they put the mike _in_ the drum? Sounds like it. The best numbers were those with Jimerson soloing with only a piano backup. It was therefore very disappointing to hear "All Quiet Along the Potomac" as a trumpet/drum instrumental. All this is not to mention the quibble that the album's connection with Robert E. Lee is a bit strained. Aside from "How Firm a Foundation," most of the songs have very little to do with Lee aside from the fact that his family might conceivably have had the sheet music lying around the house, or they were popular during/after the wars he took part in. Be that as it may, I'm sorry to say that three-quarters of the CD is barely listenable.

4 out of 5 stars Still Riding 45 years Later!.......2006-11-02

This is one of the first Jazz Messengers album I bought several years ago, and I have loved it ever since. Each of the musicians on this album were, of course, masters of their respective instruments, but what is really inspiring about this music is how they interact and meld as one cohesive unit. During the 50s and 60 there were many great individual musicians, but not very many outstanding bands that stayed together for long periods of time. But this was certainly one of them. Lee Morgan was one of the most explosive and innovative horn players in jazz at this time, and Art was one of the genre's best drummers. In "Petty Larceny" you may chuckle as the trumpet and piano mimic each other in a humorous way. My two favorites have to be "Blue Lace" and "Pisces", notable for their odd time-signatures and ample sense of mystery. This album is for anyone who loves, or even has a passing fancy for jazz. You'll find that you'll want to hear more when the last notes of "Blue Ching" fade into oblivion.

1 out of 5 stars Great Music, AWFUL transfer!.......2006-01-27

Blue Note is to be chastised for this horrible transfer of this classic cd. Listen to tracks 1 and 3 for an example of what I'm talking about. Compared to Wayne Shorters sax solos, Lee Morgan's blistering trumpet solos sound as if they're being played at the far end of some distant wind tunnel. Did Blue Note not notice this discrepency??

This cd is in dire need of a remastered version. Blue Note has ripped us off and owes it to their paying public. Either that or give me back the 15 bucks I paid.

4 out of 5 stars great music, flawed recording.......2004-08-21

I've played out my original vinyl of this so I got the CD. I consider it one the 3 best of the Messengers, along with Moanin and Mosaic. But the negative reviewer was correct about the CD version. Shorter is way too loud, and Morgan is hard to hear. I don't remember this on the LP, or the many times I heard "Tell It Like It Is" on the radio in the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album from a classic edition of the Messengers!.......2002-04-20

As a previous reviewer hinted, the 4-4-2001 reviewer didn't seem to "hear" the music. A group comprised of Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt, and of course, Art Blakey means it is impossible for the music to be anything less than outstanding.

Lee Morgan plays with his characteristic fire and swagger. Wayne Shorter's playing explains why he his one of the great improvisers and composers in the music's history. Shorter's wonderful blues, Tell It Like It Is, underscores this. In summary, the music speaks for itself!

            5 out of 5 stars Blues fan.......1999-12-12

This is one of my all-time favorite blues albums. I've listened to it over and over and have yet to grow tired of it. Ben Andrews is a master blues guitarist. On Preachin' the Blues he surrounds himself with two expert musicians, Jeff Sarli (bass) and Mark Wenner (harmonica). The three of them make absolute musical magic together. Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty Acoustic Blues that is Hauntingly Beautiful.......1999-10-21

This is a studio recording on the eccentric Mapleshade Lable that captures the stark essence of three blues talents at their best. It is alternatively stark and haunting as in the classic "Gallows Pole" and at other moments hot and funky, in a bluesy way, as in the original "She Don't Do Me Wrong". All acoustic and very hot.
