5 out of 5 stars Dark and delectable.......2005-10-21

Murder, madness, despair, and occasionally, love: welcome to the world of Reverend Glasseye. This album is great fun, and absolutely recommended to anybody who likes the weirder, darker side of music. Adam Glasseye's dynamic, bizarre vocals (often a reedy vibrato tenor, but occasionally sinking into a huskier yowl) may be jarring to the uninitiated ear, but they're the perfect complement to the fine, sprawling band of horns, guitars, drums, and keys.
Midnight Cabaret is a fast-paced romp, running through a long list of strange revelers in the dark of night. Blood O' Lambs is a true country holler, and 3 Ton Chain calls to mind the plodding horror of a coal mine, and Carnival of Pills feels like love turned to poison. But for me, the stand out track closes the album: Black River Falls. This haunting tale really highlights the amazing talent for songwriting this band has. Starting out with a simple guitar line, the song quickly blooms, with the sad rise of the horn section as things go from bad to worse, along with keyboardist Piet Masone's truly ghostly falsetto, and ending with an intense layering of voices, and a plodding, ominous sloshing sound closing out this strong early effort from a band I can only believe will get stronger as the days pass.

1 out of 5 stars It's just weird.......2005-07-20

I read the reviews here on Amazon and purchased this album partly on the strength of the review, and partly because Amazon recommended it for fans of 16 Horsepower. I'm a big 16 HP fan, so I figured I'd give Reverend Glasseye a try. The album cover looked like something 16 HP would produce, so I figured it must be in the same genre. Big disappointment - it's not to my taste at all. Although the music itself is very tight and the instrumentation is creative, the vocals are just waaaaay too annoying. The lead vocalist sings so fast that you can't understand a word he's saying. This in itself is not necessarily damnable - I love Blues Traveller, despite the fact that John Popper sings like he's on speed too; but what's worse is that that the Rev. Adam Glasseye (is he really a Reverend?) sings in an affected brusque shouty voice that I find totally intolerable. The vocals are basically rapidfire yelling, and it's really grating. Some of the lyrics sound as though they might be interesting if they were intelligible, but the Reverend sings too fast and way too obnoxious to make any sense out of them. The only song I really like is 50% Murder, which is sung in a completely different affected voice - sibiliant and intriguing. The slower, quieter vocal track makes room for the beat and instrumentation and the whole song works really well for me. Too bad the rest of the album is like fingernails on a chalkboard...

5 out of 5 stars Dark, haunting and splendid!.......2004-01-10

When listening to this CD, you cast into the black ink genre of movies like "Dead Man, Ravenous and Judge Roy Bean", dissect cadavers in a Mark Ryden painting, or think of whiskey halls, taxidermy and frozen mill ponds. This collection of spooky, Walnut Grove hymns reaches into the mysterious dark heart of the nineteenth century. The sound is cold and haunting, even more than the nostalgic and eclectic croons of Waits and eastern euro-cabaret. These tunes creak with squeezebox melodies and western rhythms that seem to place you on the ill fated wagon train to Truckee. A little bit further down the road and a little bit further in the barn, the lyrics and music are peculiar enough to set a bucolic mood with a taste of dirt in your mouth, but not lose you in esoteric translation. Like all great songs and tales of the west, there is an element of no return and no looking back. What an excellent motif for a clever debut by the Reverend Glass Eye and his Wooden Legs.

5 out of 5 stars Fan-Stinkin-Tastic!.......2003-03-25

To begin with, this is not a long cd. It's only about 40 minutes long. It is, however forty amazing minutes. I was played this cd, and straight from the first song, I was fascinated by every minute. I kept expecting to hear a bit of filler any second, but the tracks get better and better as the album goes on. Buy this thing. Expect rowdiness, lots of wailing and soaring vocals, and dare I say Tom Waits inspired story songs with full on organs, horn sections, and polka beats. There's really even no way to describe this album, you need to hear it for yourself. And I mean that literally. You NEED to hear this.

5 out of 5 stars can't get enough of this one.......2006-03-30

absolutely magnificent. vivid descriptive lyrics, excellent musicianship, great singing, haunting melodies, unique and imaginative arrangements and presentation. I have been a fan of Coughlan since I heard "the clock comes down the stairs" by Microdisney in the mid 80's. That is a great recording but this is MUCH better. I don't know the proper words to describe how good this is but it is among the best I have heard by anyone in this century. Cathal Coughlan had something to say and he really nailed it down this time. If you treasure music which comes from the depths of the soul, you simply must hear this. You will be moved.

5 out of 5 stars An album that won't appeal to stupid people........2002-05-21

If it wasn't for the likes of Cathal Coughlan so beautifully crooning his woe and gleeful animosity into my life, I would have long since considered songwriting a dead artform. This record is a manifesto for a soul music that freezes and melts the heart at the same time - and this has always been the paradox at the core of Cathals songwriting. Despite the dark moods he conjures up with graceful guitars and cellos, his fascination for the crackle and fizz of lifes great experiment reveals the indestructible soul within it all - I have never heard a repertoire that is so unashamedly life-affirming. I don't know how he does it or why I like it so much. All I know is that once you get into him you can't get out of him. He has always been a truly great songwriter with a truly great voice, and this record reinforces his case yet again. By turns funny, pretty, melancholic, catchy, moody, grand, epic, and as dark as dark ever gets. Only stupid people will not like this album.

1 out of 5 stars not for publication.......2002-01-09

This is not a review at all...but, since you allow no other space for comments, I'm using this facility.

I'm the artist, and I wonder why on earth you bother stocking this record when you begin its listing with a negative review from 'The Rough Guides' - the writer in question was only doing their job by writing what they did, and I respect their right to say what they like, but, really, what purpose does it serve for you to publish it as prominently as you do?

If you endorse the sentiments of the writer, take the damn record out of your catalogue, because nobody will buy it from you as things stand.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2000-10-16

There's not a weak track on this album. Billiantly written songs, brilliantly performed. I could compare Cathal Coughlan to a load of other great songwriters, but that would give the wrong impression - he is a great(totall underrated) singer/songwriter in his own right. This is the best thing he has ever done.

4 out of 5 stars A new direction.......2005-11-01

This is MP's dark symphony. Over 70 minutes of brooding disquiet that is a departure from their earlier, "lighter" work and a sign of things to come in the two live albums that would be released inbetween this record and "How to make a living". While MP was never an upbeat alternative group along the lines of Blind Melon or Sublime this album makes the two that came before it sound gleeful in comparison.
Jon and Steve explore their abilities to harmonize and Jon is even given the helm on a few of the tracks, a welcome break from the ordinary. The album is very well mixed and nothing feels out of place, though production value is noticably absent on tracks like "Beautiful" where Steve's voice is lost but not in that good way that Michael Stype and Peter Gabriel have mastered. In all reality, the record is crying out to be remastered.
But don't let that deter you. And don't let me lead you to beleive that this album is an antidote for depression medication. Like a cloudy day, there are spots of light to guide you through. Jon's voice is light and creates a nice dichotomy with the dark instrumentation; it's the same concept as The Smiths record "The Queen is Dead" only in reverse.
Some of the best songs this band ever recorded appear on this record. Jimmy Parker, Useless, Naked and Brother are all outstanding. Reconciliation is nothing short of phenominal and it is a genuine shame that this band has flown under the radar for well over 10 years; they deserve more and songs like Reconciliation drive that point home.
If you own no MP CDs don't start with this one. Pick up either BOHICA or Prefables first as they'll give you a proper basis of comparison. Look VERY hard for the tape only release of their live show from CT... it's not titled and has been out of print for ages but it's stellar!
