This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza

5 out of 5 stars great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16

This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.

I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-03-11

I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.

5 out of 5 stars whoa........2006-09-04

"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17

I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.

5 out of 5 stars Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08

The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

Amazon.com essential recording

Opera is in fashion, and the woods are full of pop vocalists who think they have the chops to sing arias. The best contender so far is Andrea Bocelli, who at least has a real voice, if a small one, and sometimes manages a really exciting tenor sound. Unfortunately, he is inconsistent in his tone and production, and, despite the fact that he's singing in his native language, he often sounds as though he has only the barest idea of what the words mean. The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, plays stodgily. Anyone with a real interest in tenor arias would be much better advised to check out recordings by the young Luciano Pavarotti. --Sarah Bryan Miller

5 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Performance of Adeste Fideles.......2006-11-13

Andrea Bocelli sings magnificently on this CD. Never have I heard Adeste Fidelis sung with such energy, joy, and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Bocelli never disappoints!.......2006-07-07

I hate to admit it but it has only been fairly recent that I "discovered" Andrea Bocelli, when he appeared on Oprah Winfrey(or was it Dr. Phil?), and American Idol. His voice mezmorized and touched me so much that I HAD to find out more. Over the last few weeks I have purchased apx. 6 of his CD's, and I can honestly say I love them all, including this one. Bocelli does not disappoint, and it doesnt seem to matter if he is singing in french, english, spanish or italian...as the purity, honesty and richness of his voice goes above and beyond various cultures and ethnicities. From a technical level, there are other well-knows (past and present) who are equal to or above Bocelli. However, what makes Andrea stand alone is a certain something that is hard to place your finger on, or put in to words, but all who appreciate him SEE and FEEL this. Some say he sings like an angel, or if God had a voice, it would sound like Bocelli. My own hypothesis is that Bocelli sings with his heart because his eyes cannot see the words. As such, along with his beautiful vocals pours forth his very spirit. It is this very essense that makes him so unique, and has caused so many people from all around the world to love him.

1 out of 5 stars Worst C.D Ever...But still a great artist.......2006-06-22

Reviewed By D. J.P Vergaleto

I just had to write this review. I recently purchesed 3 Bocelli C.Ds and was rewarded with 1 Very good , 1 not bad, n this one that STINKS...IF THE REVIEWERS WERE HONEST I COULD HAVE SAVED SOME MONEY.... I buy a lot from Amazon, ITs a great site, and 99 percent of the time when i read reviews they are on the money and help me out a great deal....With that said

Let me say that this cd entices you with all the big name italian songs, BUT DONT LET IT FOOL YOU..It sounds like it was made in 1 day. Who ever mixed the album has Bocellis voice so loud it sounds like he is SCREAMING ( I THINK HE IS) AND the
orchestra sounds like it is made of 3 pieces as you can only faintly hear it. There is not 1 song on this C.D ID recommend.

But dont worry , if you like Bocelli and dont know what to buy
let me tell you that I Enjoyed (Cieli Di Toscana) The first song Melodramma Rivals Bocellis Con Te Partiro Which is on his ROMANZA C.D AND HIGHLY Recomended, Also Sogno is Another very good C.D. So save yourself money and stay away from this one.
Also his Verdi CD IS VERY well made, not as strong a voice as Caruso , but once you hear Bocelli you wont care. Great Great voice that is very Hypnotic and when you hear him you wont care if he is as good as Caruso because he is Different , totally different and there both great Tenors. Peace

4 out of 5 stars the Perry Como of operatic tenors.......2006-03-25

I found this to be a wonderful cd. This was my first sustained exposure to Mr. Bocelli's art (I first heard his wonderful singing on the Charlotte Church cd "Time To Say Goodbye" -- also strongly recommended) and, on the whole, I enjoyed his singing very much. I also love Perry Como so the comparison above is not meant to be disparaging in any way, but merely to indicate that he's perhaps better in slower tempo pieces where the line of the melody naturally accentuates the richness of his voice. But if anyone doubts his chops, the first selection on this cd should put those doubts to rest -- his rendition of Puccini's "Nessun dorma" is both powerful and dramatic and stands up (dare I say it?) even to Pavarotti's.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely lovely!.......2006-02-25

Even though it was Andre Bocelli's Romanza CD that introduced me to his wonderful voice, I have to admit that I enjoy his opera offerings more than his popular works. I still enjoy Romanza and his other pop CD's, but it is his opera selections that seem to show the full beauty of his voice.

I am not an opera expert by any means, so I don't get hung up on whether or not someone is techically perfect or not. If I like it, that's good enough for me!

My teenage sons and I were in a pizza place the other day and above the noise, I heard a beautiful song- a male singer- and was shushing the boys, trying to determine who it was. With great patience, my 17 year old son said, "Mom, that's Andre Bocelli. Can't you tell?"

Enough said.

Martin's got the audience in the palm of his hand on this mid-'70s recording of a show at The Boarding House in San Francisco. The comedian and his crowd are on the same wavelength; everyone in the room seems to share a California post-hippie sense of absurdism. Occasionally punctuated by banjo playing, Martin's almost cocky performance somehow manages to ramble with a sense of purpose. He certainly doesn't have to worry about losing the crowd; every tossed-off remark and gesture is readily gobbled up. Some of Martin's material verges on the surreal, and not surprisingly, drug references abound. One subtext of the album is the tension between conventional show biz and the hipper brand of comedy that Martin saw himself as embodying. But the comic doesn't really play favorites: both alternative and mainstream culture are targets for his funny jabs. --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Steve Martin's big break.......2007-04-09

This Grammy-winning record is where it all started for Steve Martin, at least in terms of national recognition in the US. It is a real comedy gem made by a comedian who wasn't famous yet (and who still had dark hair). It was a runaway sensation and brought new life to the genre of the comedy album, which had been in the doldrums for most of the 1970s. Sure, it is dated -- there are Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon jokes, and some of the materials about the sex scene in San Francisco seems awfully tame by today's standards. But this is one of the great comedy albums of all time, and should be in any collection of comedy recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.......2006-11-06

This was from the tour before THE WILD AND CRAZY GUY I assume, which I thought was the funniest comedy record ever. This one is I would say on an equal level. Some of the jokes have aged but the majority of the stuff is really really funny.

5 out of 5 stars "Professional show business! Hey!".......2006-05-08

Too many of the reviews here are not judging this album on its own merits, but on everything they know about Steve Martin following the appearance of this album in 1977. The fact is that this album was so successful that it catapulted Steve Martin into the national spotlight, but before this album he was virtually unknown. At a time when most comedians were basing more and more of their humor on their capacity to get progressively vulgar, Martin brought forth a brand of humor that depended less on profanity than conceptual humor. He could get obscene as well, but because most of his act was "clean," the few times he would get bawdy had far more impact than with other major comedians.

I remember reading once that before turning to comedy Martin was in college a philosophy student, especially the linguistic philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Certainly Martin is more conceptual than any contemporary comedian (though Steven Wright has since developed a comparable conceptual approach, though his presentation is considerably different), delighting in toying with words, combining ideas that clash unexpectedly with one another. And although the humor was always completely planned, there was an almost stream of consciousness touch to his routine at times. It was almost he never ceased being a philosopher, almost engaging in a deconstruction of normal humor.

What I find amazing today is that this album, released in the hey day of the age of disco, seems as fresh today as it was when it first came out. Even if you've heard the stuff before, his changes of pace and shifts are perennially original and unexpected. He really was cutting edge, but pretty soon he made cutting edge popular. The album was such a success that he immediately began selling out arenas and coliseums and, of course, began his unprecedented run as guest host of SNL, where he pioneered a string of famous skits. The album was cutting edge, but it was also graced with an almost universal appeal.

Following this album he released an almost equally good one, A WILD AND CRAZY GUY. Unfortunately the next two were more formulaic and felt like efforts to cash in on his success. By then Martin's career as a stand up comedian was over. The other great stand up to emerge from the seventies, Robin Williams, has at gone back to stand up from time to time, but Martin has stuck with acting and writing. But his subsequent success in other fields shouldn't make us forget just how brilliant this debut album was.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired me but dated.......2006-04-23

This cd (when it was an albumn) in the mid to late 70's inspired me and tons of other folks. I can remember talent shows where kids did these routines (some life, some to the record). Regardless this was great...this was funny. No Richard Pryor or more heady humor...it was off the wall stuff...that was perfect for the time.

As I hear it again, I find it a bit dated, but if you heard it then or never heard it...this is worth many listens...especially at this price!

3 out of 5 stars The visual performance doesn't translate well to CD.......2006-01-06

I'm just now going back and getting all the stand-up material of great old comics who long since moved on to film, such as Martin, Allen and Murphy. Though he was a mostly ingenius stand-up comic, Steve Martin was already as absurd as any human being could follow along with. Now without the visual part of his act it gets really hard to keep up. With some of his songs, staged accidents, dropped guitars, and surreal drug metaphors, it's hard to tell what's happening with the aural experience alone. I'm trying to track down video to get the full experience.

A few of his songs weren't that funny, and there were a few uncalled for puns, but 90% of the time he's a killer comic here. If only I could follow the CD version of his act 100% of the time.

Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a lovely chunk of prose text by James Agee describing an evening from his childhood. An accomplished singer himself, Barber's vocal writing is expert, and this work must rank as one of the finest examples of the art of word-setting in any language. Barber perfectly captures the conversational quality of the text, while at the same time clothing the words in an atmosphere of gentle nostalgia. It's a masterpiece that Dawn Upshaw sings with keen insight and lovely tone. The remainder of the program is creatively chosen as well, making this one of the finest vocal recitals available by an American singer. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Material for Ms. Upshaw........2006-04-26

'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is a performance of a selection of operatic pieces by Americans such as Samuel Barber or Europeans transplanted to the United States, such as Igor Stravinsky. Ms. Upshaw shines with material, which is good for her, since she is just slightly out of her league with the material covered by the likes of Renee Flemming on the operatic front and Ute Lemper and Lotte Lenya on the Euro/American popular musical stage.

Like any good sampler, this recording's strongest draw is the fact that it makes one interested in tracking down the complete works by Barber, Menotti, Harbison, and Stravinsky. And, while the package includes all lyrics, everything is in perfectly clear English. A perfect addition to other American classics such as 'Porgy and Bess'.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Getting Better.......2005-03-02

I have had this disc for years, and I'm more impressed with it as the years roll by. I bought it for Barber's "Knoxville, Summer of 1915" which is a glorious piece of music caught here in a luminous performance. I didn't initially warm up to the Harbison songs, but they have grown on me over the years to the point that I listen to them far more often than the Barber now. I think it just took me a while to absorb Harbison's style and understand how deftly and ingeniously he uses it to take the listener into Mirabai's world. Not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars The Barber alone is worth five stars.......2004-01-16

People are always saying that they find a particular piece of music is "haunting." For me Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is such a work. Dawn Upshaw's reading of this great American masterwork is the best I have yet heard. She won her first Grammy Award for this recording - and deservedly so. If you're a fan of either Upshaw or Barber you'll want to add this beautiful CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this disc...twice!.......2002-07-20

Extraordinary!! This has got to be the definitive Knoxville--rich, touching, elegant and as close to perfect as it can probably ever be. Upshaw has the perfect voice for this work, and she gives it all the loving attention that it requires. This is a performance of Knoxville that will make you weak in the knees. For the Knoxville alone, buy this disc....twice! There is, however, just a little bit of downside here. The other works on this disc just aren't very captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Dawn Upshaw, vocal actress extraordinaire.......2002-01-01

This is the CD that made me fall in love with Dawn Upshaw's singing. I had heard her before and admired her work, but this disc made me a real fan. As it's one of her early recordings, her voice is somewhat "fuller" than on later work; she later started moving the voice "forward," simplifying the sound. Either way, her immense talent for communicating the essence of the text is the outstanding aspect of all her work. It's amazing how she can sound angry, desperate, hopeful, melancholic, all while producing a beautiful sound and tackling all the vocal challenges of the music she's singing. She inhabits the characters, the narrators, of each of the pieces on this disc, and makes it more than just a collection of songs or arias.

I want to make special mention of the Harbison _Mirabai Songs_, as it seems to have been maligned somewhat in other reviews here. This was the work that most kept me coming back to this disc when I first bought it. I think it is a masterpiece, and one of Harbison's best and most important works. (Apparently I'm not alone in my admiration of the piece, because I've heard it on a number of live concerts in recent years, so it seems to be having a successful performance life.) Harbison's song cycle is by turns exciting, sensual, driving, longing, beautiful. The orchestration for the small ensemble is masterful (as Harbison's efforts at scoring always are), and Upshaw expresses all of Mirabai's complex emotions enchantingly.

The _Rake's Progress_ aria also deserves individual comment. In this engrossing example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style, Upshaw assumes Anne's air of fierce determination, and brings the disc to an absolutely thrilling climax on a concluding high C.

All of the music on this terrific CD is very accessible, and the performances are stellar. The recorded sound is very clear and immediate, as one would expect from Nonesuch. It's one of my favorite discs in my entire collection, and would probably be so for the Harbison and Stravinsky alone.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of a great entertainer catpured........2004-05-03

Liberace was a great showman and entertainer. This double CD is the best record of his classic act and demonstrates what Liberace was all about. Although recorded in 1954 the sound quality is fine and many of the elements from that period remained part of Liberace's act over more than 30 years. Interestingly - he was not yet using "I'll Be Seeing You" as his exit music. If there is anything you like about Liberace - get this CD.

          Album Description

"It is always refreshing to encounter a disc in which consideration has been given to providing a balanced and thought-provoking programme. This is the second installment in Christopher Hogwood's `Modern Classicists' series, and is built upon an eclectic group of Stravinsky's smaller-scale works, with substantial historically influenced interjections by Tippett and Britten. The result is in marked contrast to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's foray into the world of Stravinsky's miniatures (DG), in which the scattergun whole somehow falls short of the sum of the delightful parts. By separating the two Suites for small orchestra to form a frame, Hogwood heightens awareness of their individual features, throwing into relief the intervening works, with the vocal and small-scale items on the disc providing an intimate heart at its core...Emma Kirkby is predictably delectable, floating through the Pastorale and an ideally innocent Anne Truelove in the excerpt from The ! Rake's Progress, while the Basel Chamber Orchestra is heart-rending in the `Lament' from Tippett's Divertimento...by far the most satisfying disc as a self-contained programme." (**** rating!)
