Required listening for fans of Eric Whitacre.......2007-07-14
I have been a choral singer for 30 years, and have been to Europe five times on concert tours. Although I have a serious interest in all genres of music, choral music is what moves me most. I'm always open to hearing new music, and once I encounter something that appeals to me, I usually seek to find a copy for my library.
During last year's holiday season, I happened to catch a Christmas festival broadcast on the PBS-HD channel, featuring the choirs, handbells and orchestra of Concordia College. In the middle of the concert they performed "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre. At that time, I had heard of Eric Whitacre, but had not yet heard any of his music.
Words cannot express what I felt as I listened to their performance of this piece for the first time; it was truly magical, and brought tears to my eyes. Fortunately, I captured the broadcast on my TiVo for repeat viewings. I was hooked.
I wasted no time in looking for this young composer's music, and found the story of his career fascinating. The other CD's featuring Eric Whitacre's compositions are in wider distribution than this one, which I believe was the first. This CD contains his early compositions for wind ensemble, three choral pieces and one setting of a song cycle for piano, violin and soprano. The sound quality is fairly good, considering the age of the original recording. Recommended for anyone who wants a deeper insight into the evolutiion of Eric Whitacre's compositional skills.
Fantastic!.......2005-09-22
This CD is truly remarkable in the sound and content- Eric is a one-of-a-kind composer with fresh ideas. The only thing I found disappointing is that a few songs I really like, such as Sleep, were not recorded on this album (in wind ensemble arrangement). However, it did show me some of his other works, which I had never heard of before.
My favorite modern Composer.......2005-01-12
I have both listened and sang much of Whitacre's work, and I can't say enough for it. The daring blends of parts and amazing dissonence make it different from other composers out there today. Whitacre manages to make music that can be taken for face value or you can look for symbolism within the chords and cresendos. This collection is a must for any music lover.

A must-have cd for your collection!.......2006-06-11
This is a "WOW!" album! It is Kenton at his absolute best. I don't know how I missed this as an LP back in 1971, but I sure whish I hadn't. "Bogata" will knock your socks off as will "Malaga". As a baritone sax player, I can't laud enough Chuck Carter's momentous "Rhapsody in Blue". Well, everything about this album is 5 stars. I just wish I had been a BYU undergraduate at that concert.
This is amazing music, Stan Kenton at his best........2005-06-17
This CD and Stan Kenton "Live at Redlands University"are some of Kenton's best work.
Just listen to the power and soft emotion of "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?", it just about brings me to tears. "Bogota", "Rhapsody In Blue", the whole album is simply amazing.
I first heard this album 20 years ago on a jazz station in New Jersey and I made a really poor sounding cassette of it. I was so happy to find these titles on CD some 20 years later.
During that program they talked about how Kenton had said that ideas for his music came in mad, cosmic rushes to him. He felt like he was simply a channel, a vessel, for these musical ideas that were divinely inspired and that he had little to do with the ideas. He said the music wrote itself, he hardly had any thoughtful input to it. He said the musical ideas would sometimes flood his brain so fast he could not even write them down quick enough.
Then all of a sudden the inspiration would stop cold and he'd be dry of ideas for months.
He said he was sometimes tortured and believed his talent wasn't really his own because he had no control of when the musical ideas came to him. Kenton even talked about wanting to leave the music business to become a psychiatrist because he wanted to have a deeper understanding of his own psyche and why he could not control his musical nature. To me, he sounds like he's in TOTAL control of his music!
I'm basically a heavy metal fan but this and the "Redlands" CD blew me away.
Hear the real, amazing genius of Stan Kenton with excellent sound.
This is an incredible disc. Turn the lights down, put on "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?", and just get into it. They just don't make music like this anymore.
A Kenton classic.......2001-02-14
This is arguably one of Kenton's greatest recordings. It's on a par with the Redlands University CD. Everything about this is superb, especially the Ken Hanna compositions.
If Malaga doesn't move you, buy the coffin now.

One of his best.......2001-06-23
It would be another good selection of songs done in the Guthrie style with Jack's fine guitar work if not for two things. His version of the Rolling Stones' "Connection" which is done deadpan and guaranteed to get a smile or two. Then the original version of "912 Greens". A rambling talking blues that sounds like something out of a chorus of Kerouac's "Mexico City Blues". Nothing happens and everything happens. The record had a good size cult following and is a wonderful uptempo presentation of Elliot's warmth as a performer. "Did you ever stand and shiver, just because you were looking at a river?"

Rerecorded and chopped up songs.......2004-06-29
This cd is culled from the import-only Starship release titled, 'Greatest and Latest.' Vocalist Mickey Thomas released 'Greatest and Latest' in 2003 (never in the US) with a different lineup of Starship. The songs were all rerecorded versions of Starship, Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas tracks, under the Starship banner with the current lineup. The new studio recordings happened in 2002. That 'Greatest and Latest' cd contained fourteen songs and came packaged with a dvd, I have the songs from that album.
On the plus side, the rerecorded songs sound great. "We built this city" and "Nothing's gonna stop us now", given all the times I heard them, sound quite different with a stripped down production, louder guitars and minus Grace Slick's voice. Without Grace being there, Mickey Thomas handles all lead vocals. It's interesting to hear him sing verses in songs that were originally handled by Grace Slick.
So the new versions of the songs sound good, which is why I give the album two stars. The songs from 'Greatest and Latest' were licensed for several Starship budget compilations in the US, such as 'Forever Gold', 'Greatest Hits-Delta' (this compilation right here) and 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant.'
The Delta company that put out this cd, for some reason, decided to cut short three of the tracks on this cd. The rerecorded version of "We built this city" runs over six minutes long on 'Greatest and Latest' as well as the other US budget compilations. On this cd it is under five, as the label chops out the great closing instrumental to the song. The new recording of "Fooled around and fell in love" was originally five and a half minutes long on other cd's it appeared on, but here it is again under five minutes. Additionally, the rerecorded track "Stranger" is also five and a half minutes long, or so, and that is also chopped up to under five minutes.
I don't understand the decision since it is only ten tracks and the cd clocks in at roughly fifty minutes. They could have fit the extra 40 or so seconds cut out of those 3 tracks. It all sounds like a hatchet job or bad radio edit. Additionally, the 'Greatest and Latest' import has the full set of 14 rerecorded songs and this one only uses ten of those new recordings.
The point is, the rerecorded tracks sound great. This collection of them, though, sucks. If you want to hear the new versions, get the import 'Greatest and Latest' off Ebay, which has all 14 rerecorded songs. Otherwise, pick up 'Forever Gold' or 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant' (both under the Starship name).
Pretty ordinary or worse - even the big hits.......2004-03-10
Having seen Starship ranked by Blender as the fifth worst artist in music history, it is embarrasing to recall and admit that I once bought a "Greatest Hits" compilation by them.
However, as a child I must admit to adoring their hits "We Built This City", "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" as a child, so that my interest in them when I was wanting to collect the commercial music of that decade is understandable.
It was clear to me even back in 1996, though, that whatever the catchiness and apparent (not real) charisma of Grace Slick on "We Built This City" and especially "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", the rest of the material included on Starship compilations (they're all naturally much the same) was horrible by any standards. Basically, it had the loud pomposity and thickly produced electric guitars that even then I could recognise as having almost no substance or feeling in them. Thus, even before I began exploring new styles of music, it appeared to me that Starship had nothing to offer me.
There was nothing memorable about any of their earlier songs with Paul Kantner - not one remotely memorable hook - and his vocals and those of Mickey Thomas sounded mumbled with thinner (but no less airy) production. Indeed, as they are produced, most of the material on this album sounded and sounds literally featureless and really boring. Even the two ballads "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" have lost the tenderness and beauty they once gave me.
Whilst Starship might not deserve to be so high on Blender's list of the worst bands ever, their music was still of little if any value.

THIS IS A CLASSIC!.......2000-08-30
I just about wore the grooves off this album when I was a kid, came back to it as an adult and loved it just as much. Highlights include his haunting version of the love song "If I Were a Carpenter," tall-tale "Tennessee Stud," one of his more lyrical rambles about a house he stayed in in New Orleans, "913 Greens," and working songs like "The Night Herding Song" and "Rock Island Line." The production on this is a little bit more slick than on some of his albums, and his voice is in just beautiful shape.

A NOTE ABOUT THE SHOW Our revue show Circle of Life is a tribute to several classic musicals, old and new, along with the life-affirming statements contained in their memorable songs, recreated here by our wonderful arrangers. Celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Young Ambassadors at BYU, this CD was recorded by the 20042005 cast prior to its overseas tour to China and Korea and performances in Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah at the Conference Center Theater on Temple Square in Salt Lake City and the de Jong Concert Hall on the BYU campus in Provo. Thanks for listening, and please see our other Young Ambassadors show and choral CDs, available at the show or through the Tantara Web site, www.TantaraRecords.com. Randy Boothe, director
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2005-08-16
The Young Ambassadors are clearly one of the greatest performing groups that I have seen. I also had the oppurtunity to meet the Young Ambassadors and they all have great, wonderful personalities.
The show ends and begins with Disney's Circle of Life. In between are countless arrays of medley's from well known musicals such as, "Mary Poppins", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "How to Suceed in Business Without Really Trying", "Mama Mia", "Footloose", "Fiddler on the Roof" and many others.
The energy and rhythm of the Young Ambassadors will make you want to get up and sing and dance, right along with them. They truly are ambassadors in music and in the world.

raw and refined.......2005-02-28
Hot big band in a great venue. Horns and rhythm really tight. Can't hear other's comment about the band being "conservative" -- solos are agressive and fresh.

Synthesis is BYU's jazz band. A very talented group...albeit somewhat conservative.

Album Description
After experiencing huge audience excitement in the US and Japan from its 30th-anniversary-year Curtain Time revue show and Tantara CD, Young Ambassadors' director Randy Boothe decided to take another turn with the musical magic of mainstream Broadway, and soon the idea for Broadway Rhythm was born. Featuring brilliant new orchestrations by Clive Romney and Lyle Durland, and vocal arrangements by Ron Simpson, Broadway Rhythm swings with energy and melody, and reminds you of the good old days - whether they be then or now. It's a double CD - every note of the 2002 show - and it's yours at no extra cost. Two sensational CDs for the price of one.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Program.......2007-05-07
The Young Ambassadors are an amazing performance group. I saw them perform this show at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon and they were amazing. There are a few songs missing from the actual performance, such as Phantom of the Opera, but for the most part, it stays true to the performance. I highly recommend this CD, along with anything else from BYU and the Young Ambassadors. If you like Church music, I also recommend the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.More Greatest Hits: 18 Best Loved Favorites
