Caravan were one of the most distinctive bands to emerge from the British underground scene of the mid-sixties.Despite innumerable personnel changes they retained over more than a decade a devoted following and a reputation for music that was original, technically and genuinely adventurous. They utilised elaborate arrangements and orchestration while avoiding the lapses into undisciplined self-indulgence that characterised so many progressive bands of the period.THeir debut album "Caravan",was an eclectic mixture of jazz-rock and avant-garde material.Their second album "If I could do it again,I'd do it all over you", WAs regarded by many as the band's best work, the album included "For richard"a number that was to become a perennial favourite with live audiences. The band"s third album,"In the land of grey and pink", was released in may 1971.The musical virtuosity of the band was especially welldemonstrated on "Nine feet underground",wich occupied a complete side of the album."Waterloo Lily", wich included the beautiful "The love in your eyes, appeared in may 1972."For girls who grow plump in the night"(realesed in october,1973), was another impressive effort.Like "Waterloo Lily", it had some memorable passages of big band swing and also introduced "Memory Laiin, Hugh" and "Headloss","Hoedown" another favourite not included here.In 1973 Caravan took part in an ambitious project when they appeared in concert with the New symphonia Orchestra at the Theatre royal, Drury Lane.Featuring orchestral reworkings of much of their early material, the performance was recorded and released as their next album "Caravan and the new Symphonia".The band's most successful album, "Cunning Stunts", was released. It reached n.50 in the UK charts and n.124 in the states. This compilation is a fine showcase for the rich musical talents of a band whose unique contribution to pop music history is unlikely to be forgotten.
