5 out of 5 stars what a voice and style .......2007-06-21

But what a voice and style can be said after you first hear any album of gene watson, IT IS SORTA the review for this artist .After every release . As he has the best voice around . and he always finds songs that highlight his great voice and awesome way that he carries a song . But that being said this is one of my favorite gene watson albums .

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Find.......2006-01-14

It may be hard to locate this but it is worth it if you can. Highlights are:

Glass Hearts-meant to be a single and a good song.

Snake in the House-minor key thing with a somewhat commercial sound.

Hold That Thought-diamond in the rough for sure. Strait ahead country song and a good one!

Simple Minded Heart-Co written by Mel Tillis Jr. and a nice tune.

Mirrors Don't Lie-the ending out-Farewell-Patries Farewell Party if you know what I mean!

Nice album by an all-time great if you can find it and I recommend!

In his latest CD release, Uncharted Waters, Darrell Evans shows us why we fell in love with his music and his heart for worship!(Remember Trading My Sorrows, Freedom, Let the River Flow, Fields of Grace?) I love the new version of track#4 When I Pray, and the lyrics and music are incredible on Track#2 Ready to Fly. I cannot stop listening to this CD and am thrilled with my purchase.

Doug Cameron is a very versatile violinist who is adept at practically every style of music from jazz to classical to pop. On Celtic Crossroads he uses his eclectic influences as the starting point for some imaginative settings for this collection of old Irish tunes, original compositions, and modern songs. Cameron is at his best when he avoids the electronic fusion of tracks like "Dublin Groove" and "Reel Around the Sun (Cameron Hip-Hip Version)" and sticks to a more acoustic sound. Selections like "Drowsie Maggie" and "The Jig Set" show that he has a real flair for lively dance tunes, and would be a welcome visitor to any pub session. And on "Heart of Ireland" he proves he can milk a sentimental melody with the best of them. Although this is supposed to be a Celtic collection it does include versions of some contemporary pop songs, including Sarah Brightman's "Time to Say Goodbye" and the theme song from Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On," which features synthesized whale calls, an odd choice of sound for a song from a movie about a sunken ship. Celtic Crossroads features a mix of styles including Latin, jazz, and pop, but when Cameron just hunkers down and plays it straight, he shows real flashes of Irish spirit. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely The Best Album I Have Ever Heard!.......2006-04-30

I've never really been interested in fiddle music even though I am an Irish Dancer. I went onto iTunes trying to find one of the songs we dance to called The Mummer's Dance. Many options came up and I decided to click on Cameron's version. I completely and 100% fell in love with it! I decided to check out his other songs and became totally obsessed with his cd. It's not pure fiddle or irish music, it's like everyday anybody can listen to it kind of music. I have never heard of him before and now...I'M HIS BIGGEST FAN!!!

    5 out of 5 stars a captivating album!.......2002-03-22

When I bought this album, I was only interested in two songs.
after I listened to all of the songs, I totally love this album and Doug cameron. What a talented violinist! "Mummer's Dance" is very captivating and an emotional track. Another favorite is "Runaway". As a fan of the Corrs, I like his version of the song. All I can say is that this album is too magnificent! I am a fan of cameron now.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great.......2002-01-06

I hadn't heard of Doug before this purchase (cd was playing at [a store] and I absolutely had to have it). Doug's music lifts the mind and spirit. In this cd he has taken a blend from Riverdance, The Corrs, Enya, Titanic, Lorena McKennitt and has done a splended rendition of all. This cd will get your feet moving (even if you are sitting in your car during rush hour traffic in the Chicago suburbs). A definate must have to your Celtic collection.

    5 out of 5 stars a remarkably lovely recording..........2001-06-06

As one who loves Celtic music, I was thoroughly delighted with this album. Doug Cameron is a marvelous fiddler/violinist. I had never heard any of his music prior to the purchase of this CD. The performances, the arrangements, the musicians are first-rate. Doug performs the music of many great artists: Enya, Loreena McKennitt, The Corrs, Celine Dion, Andreas Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. 'Time to Say Goodbye', as arranged by Doug, becomes thoroughly Celtic, and along with 'My Heart Will Go On', are among the most beautiful instrumental arrangements of these songs.

Doug wrote 'John Jr.' as a tribute to JFK, Jr. It is a gorgeous piece produced by David Foster. By the way, 'Time to Say Goodbye' and 'My Heart Will Go On' were performed on a Stradivarius violin that was made in 1714!

Kudos to Doug Cameron and the Higher Octave team for this beautiful Celtic-inspired recording. Highly recommended.

      Product Description

Following the Old Gold 1999 release Brilliant Concert Numbers, Uncharted Waters spans 10 years of recording in New York, Northampton and San Francisco, and features both interstellar songwriting ("Cold Weather," "Leave Me Alone," "Too Bad Luck," "Puzzle Piece", "Shark Attack," and "Life Isn't Fun Anymore") and bold instrumentals (he plays nearly every instrument). Coming on the heels of Domino's reissue of Sebadoh III, Uncharted Waters is a powerful affirmation of the former release's free-wheeling, DIY attitude. ("We can do whatever we want - we're the Beatles," Gaffney reportedly said during recording of III.) Gaffney founded Sebadoh after self-releasing The Freed Man tape with Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow in September 1988 and signing with Homestead. In 1989, Jason Loewenstein joined Sebadoh and the trio released Sebadoh III. Gaffney's angular guitar style, jazzy drumming, bizarre lyrics, collage artwork, and album titles (Bubble & Scrape, Sebadoh Vs. Helmet, Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock, and Rockin' The Forest) were integral to the group myth, as well as the irreverent, unpredictable switch-off nature of their live performances.

Stephen Schwartz got off to a fast start with his first musical, Godspell, in 1971. Other shows such as Pippin and the cult favorite The Baker's Wife followed, but by the late '70s, he had moved to Hollywood, where he worked on Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, among others. Like fellow composer Cy Coleman, Schwartz has come up with a CD on which he performs his own tunes. But unlike Coleman's It Started with a Dream, this record is focused on recent pop material. As on 1997's Reluctant Pilgrim, the arrangements are low key, built mostly on piano and synths (played by Schwartz). They are well suited to the thoughtful nature of most of the songs, and Schwartz's surprisingly boyish tenor adds a touch of warmth and fragility to the material. Catchy pop tracks like "Worth Waiting For" will surprise only those who haven't paid much attention to Schwartz's film work. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Stephen Schwartz....himself.......2002-04-11

I was skeptical when I bought this recording. Often composers have no right to be singing in public! However, what a gem that opened before me. Schwartz is no vocal superstar, but his sincere delivery of such a wide array of musica styles is baffling. The closing track "Forgiveness' Embrace" should have you sobbing like a baby. Thank you Mr. Schwartz!

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliance.......2002-02-13

All I can say is that each and every song to which I have listened, Stephen Schwartz manages to fill them with an honest, compassionate and loving spirit. He views life from every angle and writes of experiences in the truest form, especially insightful with matters of the heart. His music is unembellished and pure.
Not spoiled by his material successes, he maintains an empathetic and powerfully expressive view of life.
      He is my hero!!

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Schwartz Ventures Onto Roads Untaken.......2002-01-31

If there is a song title that summarizes the overall feeling one has after listening to Stephen Schwartz's second `pop' album, Uncharted Territory, it most certainly would be track number three, "Worth Waiting For".

Since the release of Stephen's first pop CD Reluctant Pilgrim in 1997, fans have anxiously waited to discover more of his consistently outstanding music and lyrics; they will, undoubtedly, not be disappointed. Indeed, the album lives up to its name as Stephen, musically speaking, ventures into new areas.

Like much of Stephen's previous work it's well produced, contains smart, insightful life observations and is composed in his catchy pop-influenced musical style. However, several of the songs are a musical departure and, in particular, their arrangements.

"Toxic People" for example has a funky R & B groove, which relies heavily on percussion and electronics. As well, the clever and witty lyrics are sure to provoke a laugh-out-loud response from the listener.

The opening song, "Recurring Dream" (co-written by Mary Fahl) moves in yet another musical direction. . It's an unusually understated song, building slowly but consistently subtle throughout, with an accompaniment figure that could be described as sparse and atmospheric.

"Face of a Stranger", written for Australian performer Phillip Quast, is poignant and gorgeously articulates the longing to find one's true home and place of belonging. The music has a driving yet flowing keyboard accompaniment (harpsichord-like) that's somehow reminiscent of other songs by Stephen ("Hardest Part of Love" and "Lost in the Wilderness" from Children of Eden come to mind)

"Boy on the Roof" has a smooth Latin flavor enhanced by the use of guitar and mandolin in the arrangement. Its descriptive story, played out in the mind's eye, tells of the protagonist's life-long state of emotional detachment and how, without warning, the force of love breaks through changing him forever.

Stephen has collaborated with a number of outstanding writers on this album including cabaret artist Steven Lutvak on "Rewriting History", the amazing John Bucchino on the frank and humorous "The Line Forms On the Right", Alan Menken (Stephen's collaborator on Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame) on the bluesy "Cold Enough To Snow" from the 1993 movie Life With Mikey and Lindy Robbins (one time member of the vocal group "The Tonics") on "The Roads Untaken". Robbins' bittersweet lyric will ring true for anyone who's ever looked back on his or her life and wondered "what if".

Other gems to discover include: "Forgiveness' Embrace" written for Cass Morgan and published in "The Stephen Schwartz Songbook", a lovely heart-felt-acoustic-based version of "Since I Gave My Heart Away" from the TV musical Geppetto.

Though several of these songs might fit comfortably on an album called "Reluctant Pilgram Part II" Stephen doesn't play it safe by simply producing more of the same. Instead he opts for taking some risks, stretching himself as an artist, providing us all further proof of his seemingly limitless talent.

      Product Description

From Jim Lundstrom/Gannett: Think of singer/songwriters and you get the image of solemn, earnest folk played on an acoustic guitar in a tiny, quiet coffeehouse. Don't nod off yet. "The Lullabadeer" will dispel that particular notion. Appleton, Wisconsin native Sam Winch, The Lullabadeer, pushes the singer/songwriter thing into uncharted territory with the release debut "The Lullabadeer," featuring Winch's heartfelt and heartbreaking vocals in front of a 10-piece band that includes traditional drums/bass/guitars/piano, as well as umbrellas, megaphones, skeletons and trombones. Winch pushes his supple voice like a master instrumentalist on a well-tuned instrument through the 13 songs on this beautifully crafted CD. Standout tracks include the rip-roaring opening tune "theLullabadeer," the guitar-driven rocker "Banter for the Common Man," the funny and sad "Graduation Day,"the melancholy "I Got Some Moves," the sunny "Always the Weekend," the ode to marriage called "Pachabel's Pistol" and...well...they're all standout tracks.

Got this cd from a friend. Winch does not fall into any standard category. Post modern circus folk with heavy influences from 70s heavy metal and acid pop. You can even dance to it.

Seriously, this is fun music that get better with each listen. My daughter loves it too. Check out his live act.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Musical talent, aptitude and skill to take them far.......2006-03-19

Playing Time - 53:12 -- A minute hadn't elapsed in the opening cut of Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel" before I noticed something distinctly missing from Hot Strings' "Uncharted." They've chosen a bluegrass-related new acoustic medium for their expression, but there's no banjo. Despite this obvious shortcoming, these guys really rise to the challenge. A large percentage of their material is original on this project produced by Pat Flynn. The set has energetic tempos, interpretive twists, and well-calibrated vocals. There are high-octane instrumentals ("Ghost of the Leopard" and "Lighter Than Air" and "March of the Ents") and mesmerizing vocals ("I'll Be There" and "Spirit of the Night" and "Times Like These"). In fine new acoustic fashion, arrangements are executed with great skill to showcase all four musicians' talents. What do the members have in common besides the enjoyment of biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, rock climbing, backpacking, and hacky sack? The answer is a simple one -- the Hot Strings are hot pickers!

The Hot Strings hail from Pagosa Springs, Co. where the majority of them attend Fort Lewis College. Their dynamism stems from having strong fluency in the language of their strings, as well as their willingness to walk fences between genres. A song like "We Will March" yields some interesting results and bountiful rewards when reggae rhythms meet bluegrass. Band members Josiah Payne (mandolin), Carson Park (fiddle) and Jared Payne (guitar) have played together for more than a decade. Bassist Lech Usinowicz joined the band in 2004, replacing Carson's father, Dan Park, who contributed to the writing of four songs on this project. Josiah and Jared are brothers; Carson is their cousin. By the time they were 14, 12 and 10, they'd won the 1998 Rockygrass band contest. A year later, they won the Telluride contest. But that's not all. Carson is the 1999 Colorado fiddle champion. Josiah is the 2000 national mandolin champion. Lech was the 2002 recipient of the San Juan Symphony Scholarship.

While they have "Uncharted," the band deserves to chart some of their songs. They sing in the closer, "I'm going to climb higher and higher until I reach my goal." With that good attitude, dedication, perseverance, a little luck (and perhaps a little guest banjo courtesy of Alison Brown, Tony Furtado or Scott Vestal), it won't take them long. The Hot Strings already have the musical talent, aptitude and skill to take them far. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars Music gleaned from the past and played by today's generation.......2005-11-05

A review by R. W. Stewart... Playing Time - 53:12 -- These four young men from southern Colorado have put together a fine collection of acoustic and vocal material. The members are Carson Park, fiddle, Jared Payne, guitar, Josiah Payne, mandolin and Lech Usinowicz, bass.

Carson, Jared and Josiah have been playing together for ten years. The oldest of the three in his early 2os. Lech joined the group in 2004 and is their peer in every sense of the word.

Cut #1 is their rendition of Peter Framptons' "Do You Feel" with impressive interplay between the fiddle and mandolin. 2) "Fire on Devil Mountain" was penned by Josiah and rings loud and clear as an old time fiddle tune brought to life in the twenty first century.

It's evident that these gentleman have been influenced by many generations of acoustic music. They incorporate their musical taste with the ease of seasoned veterans and the enthusiasm of new recruits. Their website refers to them as Newgrass/Blue Grass but what sticks in this listener's mind is Progressive Grass.

Their tasty arrangements, vocal harmonies and overall abilities are heard on all 13 cuts of this CD. Some, naturally, stand out. Cut # 5, Josiah Paynes' "I'll be here" is outstanding, especially Jared's guitar work. Carson's vocal harmony on #5 and his lead vocal on "harvest", cut # 4 shows that the fiddle isn't the only instrument he is gifted with. Being one of those who has a plastic statue of Clarence White on my dashboard, I was touched by Jared's and Josiah's rendition of Soldiers Joy, cut # 8. Dropped D tuning and Clarence all the way until, they added their own twist, then returning at the end to the master's touch. Thank you guys.

The disc is their first to be recorded at Monkey Finger Studio in Nashville. Pat Flynn producer, recorded by Brent Truitt and Tim Roberts, mixed and mastered by Tim Roberts. As well performed as this material is, there is one thing I would like to address. Constructive criticism so to speak. I feel the percussive merits a well played mandolin rhythm offers to this style of music were kept a bit low in the mix. I'm not talking blow grandpa off the tractor chops but I would like to have heard Josiah's rhythm pulled up a bit.

Pat Flynn has this to say of these young men in the liner notes. " Being around them helped me remember what it was like to begin the journey; the fear and wonder, the completely transcendent feeling of being swept up by a new song, a newly learned chord or figure. To feel, through the music, that sense of mission, of destiny even, to KNOW who you are and where you belong. So to those with 'ears to hear,' welcome to the Hot Strings' new CD, to their place in the world. They have a lot to tell you and to play for you."
