Editorial Reviews

Archetypal baby boomer, WASP troubadour, and fearless diarist Loudon Wainwright III cheerfully admits that his work is baldly autobiographical, and this 1989 chapter is among the liveliest and most emotionally complex installments. Who else could build a low-keyed country song that nails the title song's subject in every detail ("There is a nice big box of Kleenex/If you break down and start to bawl..."), acknowledging its curative potential while poking fun at the process? . Elsewhere, he sifts through parental relationships ("Your Father's Car"), music videos, one-night stands, and, on the album's most powerful song "Thanksgiving," dysfunctional families. That song, graced by Richard Thompson's beautifully restrained electric guitar, compresses a family's tangled emotional history into a single night, with the nuance and richness of a John Updike story. --Sam Sutherland

Cured my insomnia.......2007-07-14
I used to rely on drugs on a regular basis to go to sleep and stay asleep. After using this CD for a month I no longer struggle with going to sleep and I can put myself back to sleep if I wake up early, or I just want to relax and sleep in. Now, I usually fall asleep in the first five minutes. Even when I use different CDs, I still use some of the skills taught in this CD, signal breath and clearing my mind. I highly recommend this CD if you have trouble falling or staying asleep.
Other titles I recommend are Listen to the Whisper in your Sleep Guided Meditation and Body Scan: Managing Pain, Illness, & Stress with Guided Mindfulness Meditation.
Recommended Highly.......2007-07-06
I recommend this CD for Everyone-people trying to sleep, or just relax, adults, children, fearful people with anxiety and fearful fliers. It is the best CD of it's kind I have ever listened to. The narrators voice is superb and it really does the job. A resounding five stars! Kelly Austin Atlanta, Georgia
JUST AMAZING.......2007-06-20
What an amazing CD. I use it for sleep, when I travel, and just for general relaxation. It is very special, soothing and peaceful, wonderful for adults and children. I recommend it very highly."
Really Calming and helpfull.......2007-06-19
This CD helped me getting better, and calmer sleep. I think Ms. Shapiro deeply understands the human mind and therefore, was capable of putting together this amazing CD.
Soundly Sleeping in Dallas, Tx.......2007-05-13
This is unlike any cd that I have ever listened to. Ms. Shapiro's soothing voice seems to cut through all my anxiety and relax me in a magical way. Ms. Shapiro speaks over a delightful selection of music which collaborates to intensify the hypnotic effect. I would recommend this CD to anyone I know.

Ludacris doesn't pull out any real surprises here, but he also wouldn't have lasted this long if he didn't have a talent for consistency. What's missing here are big singles. His first attempt, "Money Maker," was too color-by-numbers. There's nothing on Release Therapy that achieves the anthem status of older Ludacris singles like "Stand Up" or "Pimpin All Over the World." Yet, even lacking a stand-out radio hit, Release Therapy is a satisfying listen, working what's now become a standard blend of playa/pimp songs ("Girls Gone Wild") and a few trap anthems ("Grew Up a Screw Up") and dispensing grown folk wisdom ("Freedom of Preach"). Along the way, he manages to take a slap at former protégé Chingy ("Tell It Like It Is"), rap about young mothers with Mary J. Blige on "Runaway Love," and hold it down for brothers in lock-up alongside Pimp C, Beanie Siegel, and C-Murder on "Do Your Time." Though not spectacular, Release Therapy stays the course for Luda to continue ruling as the Mouf of the South. --Oliver Wang
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre release.......2007-06-05
Before you click no read it first. Ludacris has made two good albums in his career which are Back For The First Time and Word Of Mouf. After Word Of Mouf he dropped back to back garbage with Chicken & Beer(his worst album) and The Red Light District(runner up). This album is a little bit better than both of them but its also not worth the excess hype around it. The Good: The intro is not bad plus its leads to one of the better songs on this album Grew Up A Screw Up. Jeezy's verse stunk to high heaven but Ludacris held it down. Then Luda teams up with Field Mob on the dynamite Ultimate Satisfaction. Tell It Like It Is, War With God and Slap is Ludacris at his best and for somebody who says he has no beef with T.I, this verse from War With God says otherwise: /Do like your song say(Be Easy) or shut the f*** up/. Runaway Love was alright even though its probably the reason why this album has so much acclaim. The Bad: Money Maker was a bad first single. Even though the beat is not bad its still a rank club single. End Of The Night(featuring Bobby Valentino) is a cheesy song for the ladies that is not as bad as the song that comes after it(Woozy) but its just as forgettable, Mouths To Feed is flat out boring and Do Your Time(featuring Pimp C, Beanie Sigel and C-Murder)is just a depressing as Mouths To Feed. The Ugly: Girls Gone Wild is probably the worst song Ludacris has ever made next to Hoes In My Room and he sounds like he needs to clear his throat badly. Woozy is the worst song for the ladies that Luda has ever made since Splash Waterfalls and R Kelly's hook that goes /but its cool cause I've always wanted to go down on a girl that reminds me of me/(????)is just as creepy as it is confusing. Bottom Line: Ludacris's Release Therapy is probably the most overrated album of the year next to Busta Rhymes The Big Dud. The songs that I mentioned in the good section are the only songs that give this album some replay value. The rest of this album is duller than an episode of Mad TV. Now you can click no.
3-1/2 stars -- Good, but really not much more than a contract fulfillment.......2007-05-23
Ludacris has been on the mainstream side of things for about seven years and he already has five albums out, which makes me wonder if this is his way of pleading, "WILL YOU LET ME OUT OF MY CONTRACT ALREADY???" And as far as released singles, it seems that the same thing always happens: first, there's the leadoff single (which goes without saying); then a month or so later comes two or three singles at once: one for the radio (in this case, "Runaway Love"), and the rest up for battle for the top spot on the Sucker Free Countdown. But Release Therapy pretty much contains what we'd expect from Luda.
Actually, I take that back. Many of the songs on here are storytellings, and fortunately, Luda is better at it than he used to be -- well, most of the time, anyway. He's fine when he tackles the topic of child abuse on the aforementioned "Runaway Love" (with Mary J. Blige). There are also a few more tracks that feature guest rappers that sound better than they usually do, like Young Jeezy ("Grew Up a Screw Up") and Beanie Sigel, Pimp C and C-Murder (the appropriately titled "Do Your Time"). But Luda's foray into gospel, "Freedom of Preach", is pretty okay.
If songs-with-a-message aren't your flavor, there are also several selections on here to bump to, especially the first single "Money Maker" (Luda even instructs you to do just that in the second verse). "End of the Night", the necessary song with Bobby Valentino on the hook, is also pretty good, as is "Tell It Like It Is", which discusses record label politics.
There ARE a few more slip-ups, though. "Girls Gone Wild" is fast-forwardable, and "Mouths to Feed" is hard to get into. R. Kelly's chorus in "Woozy" that features "I always wanted to go down on a girl that reminds me of me" is too bizarre to even try to figure out; and in "Ultimate Satisfaction" (with Field Mob), the second verse is the only part of the whole song that makes any sense (it's not very good, but it makes sense).
Still, as other reviewers have said, this is basically a "safe" Ludacris album, so if you already like him, pick it up.
Anthony Rupert
I'm not impressed.......2007-05-10
For someone who tried his absolute hardest to beat out Janet Jackson for the top spot on the charts, Ludacris's "Release Therapy" is just average. Although every song on this LP is listenable, there is nothing spectacular about the album. Lyrically, production-wise, and creatively, it is OK at best. One thing that is commendable, though, Luda touched on a lot of sensitve issues in a very tasteful and mature way (such as Oprah, Chingy, and how hard it is to be famous). Ludacris has someone blowing his head up because he repeatedly speaks on how great of a rapper he is. Come on now. The innovation in doing that is where?
Luda is not a bad lyricist, but he only impresses me occasionally. It is important for a rapper to separate himself from the rest because otherwise he just becomes a drop in the bucket. What does separate Luda, though, is the fact that his voice is distinctive. He can say one word, and the listener immediately knows that it is him. Not to mention, he has a nice voice.
"Money Maker" was very successful on the radio and music charts, but it is one of his most lackluster songs in my opinion. The beat is alright, but the subject of "shaking your money maker" has been touched so many times that it's annoying. "Ultimate Satisfaction" is one of the album's highlights. In this song, Luda is letting his fans know that he can satisfy them. "Runaway Love" is an alright track. Mary J. Blige helps to give this track life, because it's a bit drab. Luda really could have gotten creative with this song, but apparently his aim was simplicity.
Honestly, I don't really recommend this album. I would suggest either listening to some of Luda's previous works, or simply awaiting his future releases.
Mikeisha's Top 5
1. "Woozy"
2. "Ultimate Satisfaction"
3. "Do Your Time"
4. "Grew Up A Screw Up"
5. "Tell It Like It Is"
Slap.......2007-04-28
If for nothing else, buy this CD for the song Slap.
I'm suprised that song isn't a hit. That's one of those songs EVERYONE can relate to.

Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.
In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16
Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.
However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".
With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.
Great tunes - great lyrics - great harmonies.......2006-11-04
If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.
I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.
John we miss you.
Love the Music.......2006-08-22
I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.
Larson Lives.......2006-05-06
I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving
Fantastic Music, but i wouldnt want to see it live.......2006-04-30
I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:
30/90
Green Green Dress
No More
Sugar
Come To Your Senses (originally from Superbia)
Louder Than Words
and i also enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

My twins love this.......2007-04-23
One of my twin son's was very fussy. We found this CD greatly helped him settle down to go to sleep. Now it is part of our evening routine. The boys hear this music and their eyes immediately start to droop. I myself have taken many catnaps to this CD. Between this CD and a noise machine, our boys are sleeping through the night!
Your best shot for easing fussiness!.......2006-09-21
These songs are great for helping to calm a fussy baby. I used both volumes with my newborns (even before they were born to get them familiar with the songs). In combination with other methods (bathing, rocking, massaging, removing stimuli, etc.), it is just another way to help soothe your baby. I found the songs soothing for me as well. They are very monotone, slow, and rythmic. The heartbeat sound carries through all the songs and even plays through the song transitions. If nothing else, it is a good "sleepy-time" routine for your baby to cue in that it is time to sleep. I LOVE to give this set for baby shower gifts!
love it.......2006-03-25
I bought this when my daughter was one and still not sleeping through the night. This CD was a blessing. We put it on when she went to sleep and hit the button so it would play all night. As long as it was playing, she would sleep all night. On those nights we forgot to have it play over and over, she woke up. I just bought this as a gift for my sister in law, as they are expecting their first in a few weeks. I sure wish I had this long before my daughter turned one. But thankful for the sleep it gave me finally.
Great cd worked great oo.......2005-11-27
I was given this has a gift from WIC, Itried ti the first night within two weeks my baby was sleeping through the night shes now 14 months old and she goes to bed at 7pm and stays alsleep till 9 am, it was great when I switched her frim breast to bottle ti really calmed her down,,,
Very Useful Product.......2005-10-12
The music is a little strange to listen to initially as it has quite a strong heartbeat underneath it, but it is quite relaxing once you get used it. We have used this music for both our little ones. Our little Girl slept through after 2 weeks and it definately helped her calm down before, and during the night. We have bought the CD for all our friends when their babies have been born, and they all say the same.

Worst Album Yet, Not The Real Dope.......2006-02-07
Don't get me wrong, Dope is a great band; on all their other CD's. This one is like Dope gone limp. If you think Dope is a little hard, get this album, it may be perfect. By far their best album is American Apathy, which kicks ass. This album has one good song, which is Burn, but you can get a better version on American Apathy. Hopefully Dope doesn't produce another album like this one, this one is almost like teenage punk rock which goes against their earlier CDs and doesn't match their music style. I have all their CDs, then decided to purchase this one, I was let down to say the least. Their softest album yet.
not so dOpE.......2005-10-05
Ive never heard any other dope albums but I hope this is the worst because it lacks effort and talent. Poor lyrics that I could have written and not so technical guitar playing. What kind of song is B*tch. Decent drums. Poor effort.NOt worth listening to but i probably will anyway and end up liking it. heh
Awesome Band, OK Album.......2005-10-03
Dope is an awesome band, the songs they make are great additions to the world of hard rock. Unfortunatly I didn't dig this album as much as I liked the first two and American Apathy. If your buying the album for the song Bitch don't bother there is another version on the American Apathy album and I thought it was a better cut.

I've listened to this album (and band) on a regular basis since I was 15 ... I'm almost 27. This album is classic in every sense. I know every drum fill and lyric. That's how catchy it is!
It amazes me how Jawbreaker was able to pull off short, catchy songs like "Indictment" and "Boxcar" and then add a meandering, melodic tune like "Condition Oakland" ... I remember listening to the latter tune as I took the BART over Oakland once, in high school. It was the perfect soundtrack!
It sounds bad, I know, but I think Blake's vocals were way better before he had throat surgery. DEAR YOU and Jets To Brazil just don't capture me the same way as when he sounded like he was struggling in agony to get the next lyric out.
Sorry Blake!
And thank you.
The Best CD of the 90s! .......2005-12-13
Simply put, this is the best indie rock record released in the 90s. Never mind "Nevermind" (not indie) and all the ephemeral grunge and punk that got the radio play. Jawbreaker ruled this decade for the true fans of emotional, intelligent post-punk music. Blake S., a master songwriter who penned the greatest punk love song of all time "Chesterfield Kings," played straight from his always-broken heart, but never once sounded defeated or weak. Their three-man attack on "Revenge Therapy" was pure, sparkling power driven by their trademark melodic distortion, crisp drums and Blake's commanding rasp. Every song on this CD is outstanding. It is a masterpiece, full of small stories of normal people doing normal things, just searching for a bit of happiness while dealing with loss, love and every day frustrations. "Do you still hate me?" and "Jinx Removing" are my faves, while lead-off "Boat on a Hill" always makes me a bit weepy while still filling me with hope and deep-seated satisfaction.
Masterpiece.......2005-10-12
This album is one of the most pure things you will ever hear across all genres of music. It comes out swinging like Mike Tyson circa 1986 and doesn't let up. The playing is top notch and vicious and the lyrics are razor sharp. There are no tricks, the band played most of these songs live and they sounded exactly the same. Hard to believe Jawbreaker was this good, but this proves it. If someone told you about them and you're thinking of buying something, start with this because it's their best; you'll be back soon enough.
Misinformed.......2005-04-29
I first found out about Jawbreaker because AMG used to classify them as grunge. Dipsh*ts. Anyway...I picked this CD up and was totally pissed to hear that they were not too grungy. About 6 months later, I gave it another try. This isn't too bad I thought. Kind of like Green Day(their early stuff anyway). I began to not regret my decision so much. It's a pretty punk alblum. If you like just plain, decent punk, than this is for you. Nothing great. I have no standout tracks.
The highpoint of a rightfully lambasted genre.......2005-03-23
Emo-punk is one of those genres that spawned about maybe ten good bands, and hundreds of bad ones. Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Jawbreaker are the few good "Emo" bands that come to mind (Fugazi isn't emo - they just influenced the genre). Everything about the genre pretty much went to hell when Sunny Day Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World hit the mainstream. The best album of the genre, however, is far and away the one I am reviewing right now. Catchy without being excruiating or poppy, and still rocking. By far this is their best work (even though "Bivouac" has its defenders). And don't listen to the diehards who proclaim this to be a "sellout" album.

Just relax-just incredible-and much better and less expensive than Ambien!.......2007-07-05
I bought this cd along with another, Indigo Dreams, for myself and my son who had just discovered he had a relapse of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was devastated since he had been in remission for 3 years. He was going into a stem cell transplant and the really excruciating chemo accompanying that treatment, and neither of us was sleeping through the night. The Indigo Dreams cd was not effective-the positive reinforcement was so far from anything he could realize at the time, it made him weep. This cd, on the other hand, worked for both of us immediately. The first time I listened to the whole cd. Every subsequent time, I have fallen asleep before the message was over. It even works for my Corgi, who rolls over on his back and starts to snooze when he hears the tape begin. I recommended the cd to other people in the hospital who were having sleeping problems, and they, too, found it helped them get to sleep. I would give it 5 stars, but the music does not work for me.
Superb, the best.......2007-06-17
I purchased and tried many many audios of hypnosis and guided meditation for stress reduction. This one is the best. Her voice and manner are perfectly tuned. The repetition is fundamental to the healing hypnotic state. The music is brilliantly effective at supporting the goals of the spoken word. I play is audio by iPOD every night. I credit her positive suggestions to cumulative benefit to my every day effectiveness - the only bottom line.
Powerful and effective tool for relaxing.......2007-04-11
I have used it four times already and found it to be incredibly powerful and positive. I have examined the words/text closely and find it to be in harmony with my principles of individual sovereignty and freedom. I like the text and testify that the messages are completely open and true to the interests of the listener alone. The benefits are definitely worth the cost of the CD. It is easy to remain awake, if desired, or to fall asleep quickly and peacefully. At last, here is a voice which can be completely trusted to immediately calm and heal both mind and body.
"Just Relax" gave me a "new life.".......2006-12-29
Less than one year ago, post-heart-surgery anxiety was taking over my life and I was becoming disabled until I found "Just Relax," thank God. Gail Seymour's approach to self-healing through guided meditation and critically positive psychological prompts helped me begin to sleep during the night and regain my calmer self during day. Without pharmaceuticals, I am well on the road to recovery from what my cardiologist called "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" and I'm thankful everyday for "Just Relax."
Finally a great sleep aid that works.......2006-12-08
My insomnia comes and goes. Stress, caffeine and depression are all factors. I've tried sleeping pills, and all I got were mornings that felt like I'd been drinking booze the night before. Drugs are never an option for me. No thanks. Although the subliminal CDs I've purchased in the past were nice to listen to, they never seemed to help. I ordered Just Relax at the recommendation of a friend who found it beneficial. The instructions in the beginning of the CD are pretty straight forward. I listened to them once, maybe twice. When I played track 2, it took me a few minutes to adjust to hearing someone's voice, but it became a familiar one (like a good friend) very quickly. The next thing I knew, it was morning, and the alarm clock was going off. It works all right. I got a full 8 hours. Just Relax is probably the best CD I've ever used to help me with insomnia. It usually does the trick. Gail Seymour's voice is soft and gently persuasive, suggesting that I relax, and soon I find myself drifting off to sleep. There's soft music in the background, as well as on track 3, which is very easy to listen to night after night. I never seem to tire of it. I highly recommend this CD for anyone with sleep disruptions who wants safe, drug-free rest. I'm really glad I bought it. It's worth every penny.

Practice is said to make perfect, but perspective is arguably just as important. Group Therapy, Concrete Blonde's first new record after an eight-year hiatus, shows that original band members Johnette Napolitano, Jim Mankey, and Harry Rushakoff have gained some of just that. They've stepped out of the shadow of the Pretenders and shrugged off the Goth overtones that characterized their last commercially successful record (1990's Bloodletting), and have found that the balance between stylizing and emulating comes from putting personality--not posturing--first. Group Therapy opens with the radio single "Roxy," a tribute in form and content to Eno-era Roxy Music. With a pastiche of lyrics delivered in Napolitano's strong, throaty voice, the song sets the stage for a dozen tracks ranging in style from adult-oriented rock tunes to truck-stop country ballads to angry rock ragers about growing up and getting real. Though they occasionally read like high school poetry, the lyrics are redeemed by the sincerity of the band's performance. Group Therapy is dynamic and accessible enough to gain the band new listeners while giving old fans the sort of exciting Concrete Blonde music they've waited for since Bloodletting. --Sarah A. Sternau
Album Description
'Group Therapy' features 12 new recordings from all original members Johnette Napolitano, Jim Mankey, and Harry Rushakoff. This is their first new album in 7 years, since 1994's 'Mexican Moon'. Manifesto Records.

Music to slit your wrists by?.......2004-12-20
I bought this c.d. out of a lingering sense of loyalty to a band that I once enjoyed tremendously. I was sad when they broke up. I was nostalgically pleased when they got back together. But I have to admit that I wasn't expecting that much. In my general experience, bands split when they run out of stuff to say, and they get back together because they miss the moolah, not because they suddenly found new material. I would have been satisfied with a few good songs on this disc. Instead, I got a really solid album that's a, um, bit of a downer.
The album is riddled with nostalgia, longing and an awareness of the pending end. This always introspective group is digging deep into the territory of grief-expert Kubler-Ross. There are tributes to the glory days of other musicians (David Bowie-"all the young dudes" and Rod Stewart-"maggie may") and their own ("I know you liked me better then"). There's a teary-eyed nod to the Roxy and what reads like a lament for lost good-ol' days (in Violent, where "nothing seems to mean what it meant"). There's what seems to me an element of lash-back anger towards the accouterments of celebrity in Valentine, essentially a threat-song from a steel-spined goth queen who seems contemptuous of at least the chroniclers of celebrity. There's the "life is lonely" lost connections, lost love, last calls, last chances of the Latino-tinged Llorona and the superior boozer Take Me Home. Then there is the "ubi sunt"-the "those days are gone," the time-is-ending, end-is-near, days-are-passing songs, like True Part III ("& when / I leave this life / what will you say of me / you who never knew my heart?") and the finale, Memory.
If I had to pin `em to a mood, I'd say it's overall one of bittersweet acceptance. In spite of the wistfulness of When I Was a Fool, for instance, and the awareness of lost chances ("do I surrender & give up my dream / for a brick in the wall & a washing machine"), the song's ultimate message is a strong one: "still, I'd rather be me / than anyone else."
The album seems to intermingle hope and despair, most graphically on the song Angel, made menacing, mocking and tender by lead-singer Johnette Napolitano's razorwire whisper and sardonic laugh. Musicially, it is largely lacking the kind of hooks that make good radio play with a possible exception on Fried, a rap-rock-rage song that could use a little more of the old Concrete Blonde energy, ala Jesus, Please Forgive Me (For the Things I Am About to Say) and a definite exception on Tonight, a relatively upbeat and poppy song that is as short on meaningful lyrics as it is long on sound.
But the album is a cohesive, coherent whole, a melodic soundtrack for an evening with a bottle of whisky and a few old friends, or, anyway, very good inspiration for a bout of bittersweet introspection.
I recommend.
Concrete Blonde - 'Group Therapy' (Manifesto).......2004-12-08
I'd rate it 3 1/2 stars.Never being THAT huge of a Concrete Blonde fan,I remember seeing them perform live awhile back and have always been drawn to their first widely known tune,"Still In Hollywood".Forgotten about them until here recently, with the release of this comeback CD,which I'm sure their long-time fans would probably get more out of it than I did.All three original members are back in the ranks.Johnette Napolitano-bass&vocals,Jim Mankey-guitar and Harry Rushakoff-drums.Can't help but notice that Mankey's guitar playing JUST may be the best thing this disc has going for it.Tracks that I liked best were the glossy pop opener "Roxy","Tonight",the rocking "Take Me Home"(sounds as good as their early material),"Valentine" and "Inside/Outside".Just good straight ahead Los Angeles-based post punk is what I would call it.Might appeal to fans of Psychedelic Furs,The Call,Garbage and The Sparks.
A great comeback CD after 8 long years.......2004-07-02
I was so psyched when I found out that Concrete Blonde was reuniting. I won from Manifesto a copy of the CD single for Roxy even before it was released, and I played it nonstop. The rest of Group Therapy had the same effect. After 8 years away from one another, I was glad to see that Johnette, Jim, and Harry could still make great music together. Although most critics found Group Therapy to be good, but not in the same league as their past efforts, I disagree. I found Group Therapy to be very catchy, but with a different and more mature sound. Still willing to take chances and deliver with great hooks. Maybe not as many classics as say on Bloodletting, but every song is consistently good, and a few are flat out stellar. Group Therapy is another worthy collection in th Concrete Blonde arsenal! Go get it!
One of the best bands of our time.......2003-05-13
I listened to about half of the CD today on the way to Smyrna & back. Roxy is said to be the hit song on the LP and it's definately good. The next three tracks were outstanding also, even more so because of the lyrics/vocals.. or maybe the awesome guitar playing.. or maybe the great drumming. I can't decide.
It was sunny and hot out, a nice day to be outside I guess (except for that evil tan-causing sun).. I was driving along 285 almost in tears while listening to each song... Johnette Napolitino is one of the most talented wordsmiths I've ever listened to. And she is still a very beautiful woman inside and out. Wish there were more singers like her. And more guitarlsts like Jim Mackey.. the guy is phenomenal!
About damn time!.......2002-12-30
Damn.....I've been waiting for Concrete Blonde to get back together again for years, somewhat with anticipation, along with a bit of dread (I've bought my share of [poor quality] "We're back after 8 years" CD's). Let me tell you that I was pleasantly surprised with with CD. Their Sound was a bit different (Every Concrete Blonde album had their signature sound). First- "Roxy" blew me away - they've been one of my favorite bands in the last 30 years, including Bryan Ferry's solo albums - Thank you JN for that classic jewel. Another favorite was "memories", and "Violent". Please.....keep me going with future albums - Regards, WBY

Isolation.......2006-06-18
I didn't know much of their music but went to their gig in The Hague, Netherlands in 2005.
After having been put through a dreadful support act by Dreadlock Pussy which consisted of 6 band members, it struck me how Therapy? managed to produce such a terrific, full sound with just 3 members.
Later that night they played Isolation and this song really hit me. I just stood there in awe. The atmosphere that song brings! It was stuck in my head the rest of the week. Amazing! That song alone is worth buying this album.
Troublegum!.......2004-05-03
Therapy?'s Troublegum and Infernal Love are two of my all time favorite albums. Its quite the mix. Lyrics can be quite dark and broody, but they pair it with such upbeat riffs. Quite the combination. I highly recommend Therapy? to anyone.
A 90's classic.......2003-10-10
Therapy? remains as one of the most underrated bands of the past 20 years. They have maintained a high quality in their music throughout thier existance. This is not to say that Troublegum in particular is an underrated piece of music since it is their most succesful album. The point here is that Therapy? has created so much great music in the lasdt 10 yeras that the fact that Troublegum remains as their most appreciated album tells a lot about the quality of this seminal masterpiece.
Every household should own this album. If you own Nevermind, you should also own this one.
Amazing!.......2003-08-11
I remember picking up the tape version of this back sometime in '95 as an impulse buy. I'd never heard Therapy? before but I liked the cover and had some coin in my pocket. I started listening to it and was hooked immediately. I'm not sure what it was that reeled me in, but this very quickly became my driving music du jour.
Troublegum is chock full of heavy guitar, throbbing bass, furious drumming and angst. Combining these elements with some really great songwriting and some [really angry] vocals/lyrics... you've got a winning combination.
Songs like 'Nowhere' and 'Trigger Inside' will have you pulled over by the cops for speeding in no time. Therapy? also knows how to slow it down and really create some dark moods and themes on songs like 'Turn' and 'Lunacy Booth'. Page Nye Hamilton (Helmet) makes an appearance on the fabulous 'Unbeliever'; my personal favorite. Therapy? also turns out an excellent cover of Joy Division's 'Isolation'.
I would personally recommend this disc to anyone who's a fan of heavy music. If I were stranded on a desert island, this disc would easily be in my top ten of disc's I'd need to have with me.
A Melodic and Methodic Madness.......2003-05-21
TROUBLEGUM is a deceptively good album. Deceptive, because at first listen it sounds quite like a guy screaming his guts out while a rabbit repeatedly runs up and down a guitar that has been turned up to eleven. But after a few plays it started to grow on me. Following a few more listens, I started thinking things like: "Say, those background vocals play really well against the melody the lead is singing", "Oooh, that was a clever bit of guitar there" and "Did I really just think that?"
Although TROUBLEGUM superficially sounds like a typically loud collection of noise, there is quite a lot of structure to the songs displayed here. It's not just random and loud guitars; the melodies and rhythm are quite appealing. It has more of a pop sound to it than the average metal album, but Therapy? make these two sounds go together extremely well.
Moving on to the lyrics and I honestly can't figure out why I like them. On the surface, they're the standard teenage angst things that one would expect. They involve loneliness, anger, hatred, and getting drunk as a prelude to beating the living daylights out of someone. The fact that I couldn't really quote more than a couple of lines without violating Amazon's family website policy should let you know exactly what sort of words and concepts we're talking about here. But it's not what he screams; it's how he's screaming it. You can't help but want to shout along.
The more I listen to this album, the more interesting it becomes. If you don't like metal CDs because you think the style involves nothing more than the sound of an angry young white guy smashing a guitar to smithereens, then you may want to give this disc a spin. TROUBLEGUM is madness tied up in a thick coat of method. It's better than it sounds.

I enjoy Ludacris on this Cd, I am from the ole school but this cd has quite a few nice cuts. Check it out!!!!
Great Lyrics.......2007-01-18
I went shopping in the stores for the clean version and could not find one. I shopped at other online stores and Amazon had the best price. I was purchasing this for my 13year old son. This version is better for the kids. Ludacris did a great job.
(Rating 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars): A Suprisingly Good Album From Ludacris!.......2006-10-17
You know, I really wasn't expecting much from Luda. I believed his image and his skills were highly overrated by the last three albums he put out. Don't think I hate Luda though. I've been listening to him since he was on the radio station here in the ATL. Anyway, he hits us with his new LP "Release Therepy", and after listening to this album, Ludacris really got his mind right and himself straighten up on this here.
Mostly his rhymes are on point here. "Mouths To Feed" is a dope song about him working hard just to feed himself and his kids. The song "Woozy" with R. Kelly, has a nice beat (should be the second single in my opinon). The Pharell Williams beat "Money Maker" was something to get people dancing, as it was the lead single off of this album. The song "Tell It How It Is" couldn't have been more true in the rap industry, as he explains it's not all fun once you get inside of it saying "...Not to mention all the vultures//the scandalous promotors//crabs try to sue ya//magazines will misquote ya..." Take heed to his words in that song if you're hoping to be popular in something. Also a rememerable song "Do Your Time" with Beanie Sigel, C Murder, and Pimp C, as the latter three explain what they went through during their recent bids. Beanie Sigel pulls the better verse in the song. "Runaway Love" and "Freedom Of Preach" shows how much Ludacris has matured over time, and make real good songs to listen to.
Also this is an improvement, there are some problems in the album. "Grew Up A Screw Up" Luda does a good job, but Young Jeezy doesn't add anything to the song. "Girls Gone Wild" and "Ultimate Satisfaction" with Field Mob are some tracks that Luda doesn't impress on, and aren't worth hearing.
So overall Luda has improved over time. This is one of his best albums to date, and the fact that he really suprised me on this release. Unlike his other albums, Ludacris shows a small introspective side, that works real well. Backed by some good production and good rhymes, Release Therepy is an album worth picking up.
