5 out of 5 stars amo amas amat.......2005-03-04

Hey did you ever see that movie where John Houseman is a choir director and he gets fed up and tells the choir they are a bunch of amateurs? Then they do a great performance and he regrets his former tone, and tells them the etymology of that word explaining the amateur does it for LOVE! Well yes Terre Roche sounds like an amateur on this CD, one with a voice and a nylon string guitar and a multitrack recording thing in her living room. This record just absolutely lays me out. The guitar is closely miked and the sound of that is very intimate. (Think of the way Glenn Gould's piano was miked--you could practically hear his knuckles moving.) The music is inventive and kind of rocks in a dervishy way. If the hand claps on "Bearer of Bad News" do not send you to bliss, then you are clay. Please also hear the refrain "Bye bye" on "The Unrecovered One"!

2 out of 5 stars I'm so disappointed.......2004-01-22

I've been a fan of the Roches for years. Love their harmonies, their quirky views on life, and their honesty. All of that makes this CD so disappointing! Many of the lyrics are insipid and we're left wondering why Terre's talent for writing a lyric hasn't kept pace with her considerable growth in guitar playing and melodic craftsmanship. The biggest disappointment is that the watery lyrics are often accompanied by a breathy, unsupported, girlish voice that is irritating (and inappropriate)coming from a fortyish woman. This affectation is especially grating in the upper range of her voice, where it sounds amateurish. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars The Roches Return!.......2000-09-04

Hi This is a great album; Terre has really grown as a writer and (I know this is sacreligious to say) but "Sound of a tree falling" is as goood as "Broken places" (that song by the Roches about a kid looking for his adopted mother); that song needs a capo at the second fret actually (see the www.roches.com site) Anyways, Ive seen Terre and Maggie live (Maggie sings on the album) and must say, they do the songs on this wonderfully; NY City Pakistan is about Terres encounter with a NY bus driver, and "No ones doing the job they want to be doing" she premiered at the Bottom line for a Nightbirds tribute few years ago; a good song, but it also makes you think

WHod have thought that?!

Pick it up! pick it up now!!
