Kids just love it!.......2007-03-22
My kids love Puppy at the Pound and cannot seem to hear it enough. So I bought the CD and they absolutely love it! A must have for anyone young children.
Happy Songs!.......2006-12-24
My youngest sister introduced me to Tom Chapin's music that she enjoyed year after year at the Walnut Valley Festival. I found they always hit the spot and you can listen to them again and again.
Recently after her untimely death, I happened across his tune "Happiest Song I Know" when I was feeling particularly low. The cheery words and encouraging lyrics went straight to my heart. You listen to one of his songs and it really speaks to you and the tunes are sprightly and energetic.
Tom Chapin does it again!.......2006-11-04
My daughter just got this album as a birthday gift (she's six).We have played it every day for two weeks, sometimes twice, and each time I hear it I love it more. I'm a preschool teacher, so I immediately taped it to play in my classroom, and the kids in my class love it, too
Tom Chapin has a way with children's music. He has a gift for engaging not only children, but their parents as well. "Planet Bruno" not only pays homage to disco, but to David Bowie as well. How many children know "Major Tom"? But their parents do. And so do many of their grandparents.
Children need music that doesn't insult their intelligence, that plays like they think, and tackles the importent issues in their lives. Like being able to find their shoes or being proud to be themselves. Tom Chapin addresses children with humor, sensitivity, and, most of all, respect. How many times have you put on a CD for your kids and wanted to run screaming from the room? That won't happen here.
We so love Tom Chapin at our house. My daughter has decided that if we buy a copy of "This Pretty Planet" for everyone in the whole world, the world would be a better place.
It just might at that. Maybe we should buy them this one, too.
"The pied piper of children's music".......2006-08-09
"Mommy, oh mommy, what can I do? I want to go out and I can't find my shoe!" "Did you look in the closet?" "I didn't." "Well, do! You're not going out with only one shoe!" So begins the catchy tune, "Only One Shoe," on Tom Chapin's CD entitled, "Some Assembly Required." This song and others like "Puppy at the Pound," a tune about a family trying to pick out the very best dog, had me believing that perhaps Chapin had taken up residence at my house!
My son still likes children's music, even at the ripe old age of nine, but not "baby songs." Chapin has managed to put together a CD that fits the bill for older kids as well as tiny tots. "Some Assembly Required" is that rare CD that delights both parents and their children alike and seems like in no time you know all of the lyrics by heart. In my house it is one that we put on in the car, at bedtime, and just while we are playing or hanging out.
If you haven't seen three time Grammy winner Tom Chapin in concert it's doubtful that it is because he hasn't toured somewhere near where you live; it seems that he has been around the U.S. and back again time and time again. You can track his concert schedule on his website. His concerts are truly family events and he is a wonderfully engaging performer. In fact Parents Magazine has dubbed him "the Pied Piper of children's music," a title that is well deserved. - Carol Laliberte
Charming, funny, clever, musical...great for kids and grownup kids too.......2006-05-29
Fortunate to find Tom Chapin's Some Assembly Required at a yard sale, I listened to only the first song through a portable CD player before deciding to buy it. Although I don't have children, I do have a songwriting background. This helped me enjoy the clever lyrics on many of the songs and the expert arrangements on all of them -- in particular the versatile piano playing, which can really "cook" or be supportive and flowing.
As with other songs of this genre, the situations are particular to children: how to find a lost shoe, the attributes of one's face, is it okay to ask questions (of every conceivable sort), feeling shy to dance (and being relieved when your friends like how you do it). I laughed out loud on hearing Puppy at the Pound. Every family that has ever gotten a dog will relate to the universality of the lyrics, which is what makes the song so funny. The lyrics of How I Became a Clown are also highly imaginative and humorous; and the arrangement is a perfect accompaniment to the story. There are some surprises, too, appropriate for children brought up in the last 10 years: Brown Gold deals in an interesting way with composting; and Questions mentions iPods and Googling. The title song, Some Assembly Required, hilariously and accurately describes the time-consuming, often frustrating task of putting together a so-called easy-to-assemble toy, as many parents have experienced (and spent a kid's entire birthday on). I'm the Only Me is a beautiful, tender and heartfelt song that would work in any musician's repertoire.
The harmonies (like the musicianship) are splendid. I wish that the harmony singers chimed in sooner -- I think the album could use more of those richly textured voices. The pitch of the children's choir is spot-on, a welcome change from children's singing on some albums that sacrifices musicality for presumed cuteness. My only complaint is the unevenness of some of the songs: though most deserve a 5, there are a few 3s in the mix. However, I'm giving this album a 5 overall, in part to compensate for one reviewer's 1 rating (which for the life of me I don't understand). Many of the songs are memorable and pleasingly musical. And almost all are genuinely uplifting. If you have children, you will find common ground and much entertainment with your young ones. And for those who don't -- if you relate to life, and if you can appreciate the creativity involved in turning ordinary, day-to-day situations into art, you will like this album.

These girls are full of vitality and vigor. If you like harmony, you'll love this CD. Some songs are really funny, cute and very imaginative. I bought it on a whim and loved it. I am planning to buy all of their CD's.
An excellent "fun" album.......2003-04-22
The four women in the group obviously enjoy making great "folk pop" music together. The tunes are very catchy (really instantly memorable) and both the lead vocals and the harmonies are buoyant and well done.

more of the same.......2006-07-23
It has always befuddled me that some of my musical hero's from the psychedelic era of rock and roll, performers who regularly challenged convention and embraced avante garde notions as a cherished personal freedom, became so tied to whatever winds of change blew their way as the 1970's, and especially the 1980's, progressed. I find it instructive that most of the performers who survived that weeding-out process to remain relevant threw all convention to the wind... performers such as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. These juggernauts of rock stuck with the tried-and-true formula's that had proved to be their mainstay... and on occasion when they drifted in the tide of popularity, as did Young for a brief period in the mid-1980's, their star waned.
So it's no wonder that by 1987, Dave Mason found himself becoming chummy with the Chumley Record label in order to release 'Some Assembly Required'. Although by that year a shift was already underway, turning away from the artificiality of synthesizers and electric drum kits, Dave Mason indulged himself in those trademarks of the decade. Coming into the studio with only a handful of worthy compositions compounded his difficulties further, despite the fact that the years had been good to Dave Mason's vocal talents. For Dave's fan base, however, his gentle acoustic touch, and especially his capabilities with a wah-pedal fortified electric guitar in his hands, were sorely absent. Ironically for Mason, who had helped turn the musical world on its ear with his outstanding epic, 1969's 'Alone Together', an opportunity to revolutionize music once again by returning to those roots was squandered. Unfortunately, 'Some Assembly Required' would allow the musical direction of the 1980's to stay the course.
There are a few songs of note on 'S.A.R.', beginning with the synth and piano dominated opener, 'Breakaway'. It's a slow-tempo "you've found someone new" number, distinguished by Mason's strong vocal performance and a tuneful melody. 'Strong Heart' closed out side one of the original vinyl version of the disc (which must have only been available in small numbers when released by Chumley on CD, since it is now out-of-print, and few copies appear on the market). While still based in horns and synthesizer, Mason's guitar talents are put on display in the bridge and the finish, and the song is delivered with grit and conviction over a pulsing beat. The only true guitar-based track is 'Walkin' On the Edge', which also possesses a catchy melody and some thoughtful lyrics ("you tipped the balance and I took the plunge"), a trait not found in abundance throughout the set list. Also worthy of mention is the closer, 'I Love the Music', an upbeat track with a Caribbean/Jimmy Buffet feel to it, and featuring conga, steel drums, horns, and one last blast from Mason's electric guitar.
There is considerable filler on 'S.A.R.' however, such as 'Fool's Gold' a 2:03 acoustic guitar and fiddle ditty, and several songs built around the ever-present synthesizers and horns ('Hold On', 'In Love With You', 'Sour Grapes', 'I Can See the Wind'). 'Draw the Line' follows the same general format, though Mason does bring some orchestral sounds into that mix.
Dave Mason is the performer who has made more out of one album ('Alone Together') than perhaps any other musician from the 1960's. He has enormous talent and energy, and a positive demeanor that has carried him through difficult times when his style of music was far from popular, such as the disco era. I've always wished that Dave could rekindle the torch that shown so brightly during his early years with Traffic ('Feelin' Alright') through that first solo disc. That never happened, and 'Some Assembly Required' is exhibit 'X' in the case against him. You would have to be at the core of Dave's fan base, as well as a sold-out fan of 1980's music to want 'S.A.R.' in your collection.

Much Better Than OK.......2004-02-10
Some Assembly... is probably my favorite Enkindel (The Enkindels) album. Though not particularly groundbreaking, the songs are catchy and emotional in that heavy midwest vein with just enough edge to keep them interesting. This one lacks the more uptempo/punkier songs of their later releases (following the name... shall we say "adjustment?") but more than makes up for it in terms of the overall feeling of the album...
It's ok........1999-07-29
This isn't a bad release by any means, but something here is missing. Maybe it's intensity, perhaps a lack of sincerity, but it's Still not too bad. Check this out fans of mid-west emo-pop!!
