christmas gift.......2007-01-19
bought this cd for my dad for christmas and he said it reminded him of when he was a kid in kentucky. i would recomend this for anyone looking for this kind of old time mountain music
Absolutely essential.......2004-10-06
This is a marvelous collection. Along with "High Atmosphere", I consider it essential to orient you to the way the music really sounded. Most people come to Old Time music from some place else...bluegrass, country, or one of the great modern oddities like Old Crow Medicine Show or The Bad Livers. Perhaps you got the bug from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". Well, you're on the right path with this very big 2 CD collection that not only has achingly beautiful a'capella balads, red hot fiddling, and some really phenomenal banjo work, but also haunting church shape note singing. Get "High Atmosphere" as well, and once you've absorbed them, branch out from there.
OLD TIME MUSIC.......2003-04-21
GREAT CD. THE CD CASE IS KIND OF DUMB, BECAUSE IT LIST THE ARTISTS AND TRACK NO. ON WHICH THEY PERFORM, INSTEAD OF THE ARTIST AND THEN THE SONG. THE SONGS ARE WRITTEN ON THE CD LABEL THOUGH. STILL A GREAT CD. VINTAGE SONGS, VINTAGE STYLE
The hills were alive!.......2003-03-16
Having just reviewed another of John Cohen's excellent collections (High Atmosphere) yesterday, this seemed like a natural choice for today. This was recorded in 1959.
Obviously the biggest "star" here is Roscoe Holcomb. He is the one person on this 2-disc set who is the most well-known to the largest number of people, but this is by no means a one-man collection. In fact, I don't even consider Roscoe to be the best musician present here. For the life of me I still cannot figure out why Bill Cornett's name isn't thrown around as "one of the greats". His voice and banjo playing, particularly on Pretty Polly, Old Reuben, Born In Kentucky, Sweet Willie, etc... just knock me out. Born In Kentucky being a variant of the more well-known tune, Dark Holler.
J.D. Cornett has a fine solo-vocal version of Spring of '65, and you do indeed get some fine stuff from Roscoe here in case he is your main focus. From bits of Jack-A-Roe to one of his "I made it myself" tunes where he then lifts an entire lyric from a Blind Lemon Jefferson tune, though neither he nor the liner-notes make mention of this. Plus, I will take Roscoe's Wayfaring Stranger over Bill Monroe's any day of the week. All in all, it's good stuff!
Moving on, I personally am not too much for the sets of church tunes, aside from Clap & Shout on disc two. However, there are alot of jewels in the sand of disc two. The highlights of disc two, for me, come in the form of Granville Bowlin's segment, Mrs. Sams solo-vocal Wagoners Lad, James Crase's various fiddle tunes, and Lee Sexton's solo banjo St. Louis Blues and his Pretty Polly that is rather closely related to Bill Cornett's but not as powerful. I just love Mrs. Sams' voice. Everyone has their own aesthetic of what is good and what isn't, and for me, Mrs. Sams is just exactly what a wise old female mountain singer should sound like.
There is such a richness and rugged individuality to all these performances that it just breaks your heart to know that for the most part, these traditions are gone. At least we were lucky enough to have someone like John Cohen roaming the hills and making these priceless recordings for all of us.
This is excellent.......2002-05-10
This CD set takes you into a world of simple but hard labor, soul crushing poverty and soul liberating music. Its historically and musically important. A must for banjo players who have an interest in the evolution of how the instrument is played.

Customer Reviews:
Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15
Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.
Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.
Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.
Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.
However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.
Great circus music.......2005-08-12
I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.
Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19
It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.
Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07
Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.
Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12
This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Classic Bluegrass Gospel.......2007-06-02
While many (myself included) regard J.D. Crowe and the New South's 1975 self-titled album one of the finest progressive bluegrass albums ever made, this collection of bluegrass gospel is an equally impressive album in its own right. While released by Rebel Records in 1978, it was actually recorded for a smaller label some years earlier. The band's lineup at the time featured Larry Rice on mandolin, Bobby Slone on bass and future solo bluegrass star Doyle Lawson on guitar and lead vocals--although Rice handles lead vocal chores on "Goin' Up" and Crowe himself does a rare lead vocal on "Look for Me." All told, there is not a weak track in the bunch. My only complaint is that the album is barely over thirty minutes. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The Model Church.......2006-12-01
I Bought this cd for my mother and she loved it. If you like bluegrass/gospel, you'll love this cd.
EXCEPTIONAL GOSPEL.......2002-07-03
MY MOTHERS FAVORITE GOSPEL SONG IS "MODEL CHURCH" AVAILABLE ON THIS CD. WHAT SURPRISES ME MOST IS THE FACT THAT IT WAS RECORDED IN 1969. THE QUALITY OF THE SOUND WOULD MAKE ME THINK THAT IT IS A NEWER RECORDING. ANYWAY THE REST OF THE SONGS ARE GOOD ALSO.

wonderful cd set.......2007-02-08
this was a gift for my husband, who plays music also. What was so great about this,is that his grandfather plays 7 songs on this set.The music was so clear. We have old 78"s of his music, but it doesn't sound near as good. All the songs have great sound quality. The price is a good value, and it arrived on time. Also the info book with it was a nice surprise.
stupendous.......2006-10-21
a stupendous 7 cd box set of great old time recordings. a must-have for all old time american folk music affecinados. the songs are wonderful and the sound quality is fantastic. get it if you can.
One of the top 5 collections of pre-war music ever........2006-01-19
This project pulls together some of the finest, most authentic fiddle, banjo & ballad performances I have ever heard. There is sort of a seamless transition from pre-war records to post-war field sessions collected by Lomax and others and a huge amount of research and care taken by Yazoo. I will probably have to buy a second set since I have worn out the first one. Great performances by Burnett & Rutherford, the Walter Family, Stepp, and others. The highest, best recommendation!
WOW!! So Much Great Muisc from one State!!.......2003-04-02
The problem with this box is where does one start the praise. With seven discs of material from the 1920s and 1930s, this collection serves as a fine introduction not only to the white folk music of Kentucky but to that of South as well. It is all here--string bands, ballads, gospel. A wonderfully illustrated text accompanies the set. At the heart of the box are the many fiddle tunes demonstrating once and for all that Kentucky fiddlers can lay claim to being some of the best going at that time. The only drawback is the scant recording information, I would like to have seen more discographical information included, particularly regarding the field recordings. But the purpose here is the music and there is plenty of it. Let's hope we can see boxes like this for the rest of South.

Good double CD at a good price.......2005-06-22
2 CD for only 6$ plus shipping and handling is a good price. The quality and the choices of tunes are good and the quality of recording is good too. The orchestras, the singers and the choirs are good too. So, if the titles of tunes please you, it is a good 2-CD boxset to buy. If you are an American, I am sure that you know all these tunes. If you are not an American, you will say to yourself : "I think that I have heard this song somewhere."

Solid ALbum from One of the Great Banjo Pickers.......2007-06-02
Countless musicians have past through J.D. Crowe's bands over the years: Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley among them. On this 1978 outing, Doylw Lawson is on board on guitar and vocals, along with Larry Rice (Tony's little brother) on mandolin, and Bobby Slone on bass. They perform traditional numbers like Earl Scruggs "Somehow Tonight" and Lester Flatt's "I'll Stay Around, as well as the Scruggs-Flatt standard "Bouquet in Heaven." They also perform more contemporary songs like the Gram Parsons-Chris Hillman gem "Sin City." Crowe also shows off his stellar banjo picking on the original instrumentals "Black Jack" and "Bear Tracks." The only downside is the relatively short playing time--33:32. RECOMMENDED

A Creative Programming Idea Gone Awry.......2003-10-01
The notion behind the program on this CD was a wonderful one. As a pendant to a new song cycle by Warren M. Swenson set to Civil War poems by Walt Whitmen, George Shirley, tenor, and William Bolcom, pianist, record eleven popular songs from the period surrounding the Civil War including familiar favorites as 'Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' and some rare songs like the Creole folk song 'Michieu Banjo' and Henry Russell's 'The Maniac.' But there are two things wrong with the final product. First, the song cycle of twelve songs, although set to stirring, evocative poetry, is pedestrian and in a pale faux-Ives style. Second, and sad to hear, is the deterioration of the nearly 70-year-old Shirley's once glorious voice. He was, in his day, an intelligent singer with a beautiful voice that he could use to do just about anything he wished. I remember a riveting 'Salome' Herod only ten years or so ago. He still sings with immaculate musicianship and intelligence and his accompanist, the redoubtable composer/pianist William Bolcom gives him formidable support, but the voice splays and wobbles under pressure and it becomes painful to listen to it.
The booklet notes and recorded sound are exemplary.
But my advice is to avoid this issue unless you really want to hear Swenson's songs; this is likely to be their only recording.

Good Music!!!.......2005-09-09
I bought this CD after hearing one track on WUOL, the local public radio station, "Joe Clark Steps Out," an orchestral spin on an old folk fiddle tune, "Old Joe Clark." Turns out I also thorouoghly enjoyed the rest of the CD. I've been playing the CD almost non-stop in the car since I got it. Fans of Aaron Copland, Gustav Holst, Mitch Miller's TV sing-along, and John Williams' movie music (Star Wars et al) should enjoy the other tracks as well, or at least hear some similarities. Who'd'a'thunk that recordings made 50 years ago could sound so good re-done on a CD and that 20th Century Music could be so enjoyable!!
Happy Listening!!
excellent recording and musicianship.......2005-07-01
I had been looking for this CD for quite a while after my LP was ruined in a flood. I just had to have another copy. The pieces recorded in 1956 were excellently put on CD in 1992. Crisp and Clear. The pieces, by mainly American Composers, are refreshing and well executed by a very underrated conductor and orchestra.
Get Mercury Living Presence Before Its Dead.......2003-07-05
When I first started collecting classical CDs, I only had a few Mercury Living Presence (MLP) titles. In my quest to get the absolute best, or at least a definitive recording, of the major works of the standard repertoire, MLP discs rarely topped the critics' lists. In fact, only three MLP recordings have been earmarked as "Essential Recordings" by Amazon.com -- Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Byron Janis performing Rachmaninov's 2nd & 3rd Piano Concertos, and Yehudi Menuhin performing Bartok's 2nd Violin Concerto, all three with Antal Dorati as conductor. It is also safe to say that three other titles are equally essential for their historical value alone. They are Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake by Dorati (the first recording of the complete ballet), Janis performing Liszt's Piano Concertos (the first recordings made in the Soviet Union by American technicians, musical staff and equipment), and Kubelik's Chicago Symphony performance of Pictures at an Exhibition (one of, if not the single best mono recording ever, and the one that led the New York Times critic to coin the phrase "Living Presence," from which the label named its series). But how does a CD line go from having a half-dozen must have recordings, to being this reviewer's all-time favorite classical label?
The answer: consistently magical performances, captured in brilliant golden-age stereo sound, that offer a slightly different take on your typical interpretation of the great works. Of course, MLP also went to great lengths to feature music by more obscure composers, particularly contemporary Americans. While Dorati, and to some extent Paray, recorded these lesser known works, Howard Hanson was their champion. On this set, Hanson and the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra showcase compositions by McBride, Nelson, Mitchell, Vardell, Still and Ginastera (names I had never heard of before and very rarely since). While these are all virtually unknown compositions, Hanson performs them like they were from the classical canon. Maybe that is why collectors prize these recordings, because they are a breath of fresh air in a homogenized world of listening. Of course, collectors love a challenge too, and MLP CDs are becoming increasingly hard to find. It has taken years for me to finally find all of the MLP CDs released to date, and unfortunately I don't think there will be any new releases forthcoming. So collectors, and even those who aspire to be, should pick up as many Mercury Living Presence discs as possible now, before they all die.
