Product Description
This Danish trio (originally called the Boom Boom Brothers) began life as Hurdy Gurdy during a London performance in 1968. Their first and only eponymous album recorded in '71, is considered one of the top 10 Danish rock LPs of all time. The furious guitar playing of Claus Bohling is definitely the band's secret weapon, deftly maneuvering through heavy progressive, blues and jazz. The band brings to mind the first Jethro Tull album, and the influence of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath can also be heard, but Hurdy Gurdy are not mere 'sound-alikes', actually their sound is rather unique, particularly in the Eastern-influenced sitar-heavy tracks. Eight tracks. Miniature gatefold LP sleeve. Akarma. 2002.

Can you believe the price on this? This is probably the best Vivaldi collection for the price available. The sound quality is superb.

5 out of 5 stars terrific.......2006-04-23

Vivaldi 25 favourites is marvelous ,it has been digitally enhanced and is certainly a keeper.Really am pleased with anything i have purchased from Amazon

3 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for........2005-10-15

This CD is decent but does NOT sweep you off your feet into a soaring concert hall with your heart beating loudly and your breaths coming in faster. Why? I think its the quality of the recording and the caliber of the musicians maybe? But hey, $4.98 does not buy much more than a fast food meal- so no harm done! Happy Listening!

The majority of the musical selections is undeniably fine. If only the track listing (s) were accurate or agreed with each other and the actual selections as they are ordered on the CD!

Album Description

2005 Digitally remastered re-issue features six bonus tracks 'Poor Cow', 'Lalena', 'Aye My Love', 'What A Beautiful Creature You Are' 'Colours' and 'Catch The Wind'. The album forshadows the coming discontent which eventually drove Donovan out of the music business. The title song, 'Hurdy Gurdy Man,' combines what are upbeat lyrics with a very dark performance. This ambivalence continues in a set of songs with a very bitter edge like 'Teas', 'Tangier', and 'Hi It's Been a Long Time', 'Yet 'Jennifer Juniper' & 'Peregrine', among others, stand in stark contrast. EMI. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a mish mash.......2007-01-03

The aim of this album seemed to be diversity which is both its strength and its weakness. The World Music and heavy elements work, the pop and cute jazz have not aged as well. Donovan could sing jazz very well, such as the version of "Young Girl Blues" he did for the BBC around this time, which is magnficent. The jazz cuts on here are the weakest by far with the singular exception of "Get Thy Bearings".

The bonus tracks are mostly singles (some recut for a greatest hits package) and b-sides. By far the best surprise is the duet "What A Beautiful Creature You Are" which is funny and sexy and would have sounded great on the Barabajagal album.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan is the Hurdy Gurdy Man.......2006-07-23

I liked the title song, but not much else on this record the first time I heard it. But after a few months of being in my car (I do a lot of long driving trips) the record started to grow on me. It's not, in my opinion, something you can like right out of the box, like "Mellow Yellow" or "Sunshine Superman," but it's every bit as good. Donovan was sort of moving in a different direction back then. There is a lot of Indian (like in the big country next to China, not Native Americans) influence here, mingled with that kind of medieval atmosphere associated with "Superman" and "Mellow." I don't know, it's hard to wrap my mind around this record that is so hard to define. I just know I like it now, that I play it a lot now.

And on this version I especially like the extra songs. "Teen Angel" originally a B side is just outstanding. And this record is a good place for "Poor Cow" to finally find a home. Also I like that it ends with the versions of "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" that were rerecorded for the Epic "Greatest Hits" record. They work really well here as does "Lalena." The Hurdy Gurdy man brought songs to the people. Donovan is the Hurdy Gurdy Man.

4 out of 5 stars Donovan - 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' (EMI).......2006-03-06

Nicely assembled twenty track collection of tunes by none other than THE '60's folk/rock stalwart/icon,known simply as Donovan.I've never been the biggest Donovan fan,but I need to be in 'the right mood' to properly enjoy this music genre. Most of his great tunes are here, like the title cut "Hurdy Gurdy Man","Get Thy Bearings",the beautifully done ballad "Jennifer Juniper","A Sunny Day","Lalena" and "Catch The Wind".So,get out those love beads, lava lamps, tie dyes and Scooby snacks.Long live the hippy era!

4 out of 5 stars Solid but unfocused effort.......2006-01-30

"The Hurdy Gurdy Man" was probably Donovan's last truly solid effort, although a few missteps mark this as a slightly lesser work than the three previous masterpieces that came before it. Although nearly all of the tracks on it are strong, the overall sound and style is perhaps a little *too* diverse, creating an unfocused atmosphere that is in contrast to the singular mood which "Sunshine Superman", "Mellow Yellow" and "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" were able to create.

The album opens with the title track, one of his best-ever compositions that starts out as a whisper and ends as a raging rocker featuring the singer backed by three future members of Led Zeppelin; however, the rest of the record is radically different from this, ranging from psychedelic drones to acoustic ballads and a few featuring the West Indian influence found on the previous single "There Is A Mountain". "Peregrin", "The River Song" and "Tangiers" belong to the psychedelic drone genre, and all three are mesmerising in style, with the "The River Song" being particularly beautiful. "Get They Bearings" is a catchy piece of jazz-rock with saxaphone, while "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl" and "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow" are slightly twee but still charming ballads in the flower-power mold Donovan is perhaps most associated with (if a bit unfairly, especially given the power of rockers like "Season Of The Witch", "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Barabajagal").

The album begins to drag towards its finish, however, and "Teas" is perhaps the weakest closing track on any of his albums, leaving one with a more mixed impression of the work overall than was necessary. When one considers the high quality of the singles and outtakes included as bonus tracks on this remaster--especially "Poor Cow", "Lalena" and the truly bizarre "What A Beautiful Creature You Are"--one wonders why these weren't included on the final release. In any case, while not a first choice for new Donovan fans (that would *have* to be "Sunshine Superman", in either its US or UK incarnations), it is still an essential purchase in rounding out his classic period, and certainly a superior effort to succeeding efforts like "Barabajagal" (get that one anyway, especially the remaster with its superior bonus cuts).

4 out of 5 stars Another Fine Donovan Re-Issue!.......2005-10-07

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" was Donovan's 1968 album, built up around the strong singles "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Jennifer Juniper". Like Donovan's other Micky Most produced albums this one touches upon a great varity of musical styles and instrumentations, with tasteful and original arrangements by John Cameron. Some of the more rocking tunes were arranged by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin - e.g. the stunningly build-up title track, starting with Donovan's silent humming joined by his acoustic guitar and building up towords its climax with electric guitars and drums. The overall sound-quality of this re-mastered version is great!

"Jennifer Juniper" is a beautifully arranged pop-ballad featuring both oboe and harp.

The album features a handful catchy free and easy tunes among which "The Entertaining of a Shy Girl"and "The Sun is a very Magic Fellow" stand out!

A couple of the droning tunes, combing traditional Eastern sounds with Celtic sounds, may sound a little dated.

"West Indian Lady" revives memories of the Caribbean feel of Donovan's earlier single "There is a Mountain".

A few tracks like "As I Recall it" and "Get Thy Bearings" are quite jazzy, and "Hi, It's Been a Long Time" is a great pop-tune, beautifully instrumentated.

Among the 7 bonus-tracks several stand out. The B-side "Teen Angel" is an early Donovan composition; a fine melody and a great addition.

The album out-take "What a Beautiful Creature You Are" is a fun track with a very catchy melody. The song features singer Lulu. The song ought have been included on the original album.

The two re-recordings of "Catch the Wind" and Colours" done for a for a best of album, are both fine, though they lack the charm of the original versions.

All in all another fine Donovan reissue!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Music In The World.......2007-06-25

Simply stated, Andre Rieu performs some of the most beautiful music in the world today. "Dreaming" is my favorite but in the end, I can likely say that anything he has done is my favorite. You are transported to a
beautiful universe where it is rather difficult to return to normal everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming with peace.......2007-02-10

Wonderful, peaceful music to make a quiet time a near spiritual experience.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy is how you feel.......2003-01-15

I am a great Andre Rieu fan and a Strauss fan. This was even more relaxing than Andre's other works. Great stress relief after a long day or just to sit and relax with your special someone. If people like Andre Rieu, you may also want to try Tim Janis who is a great composer/conductor. He will also relax you.

3 out of 5 stars Too Dreamy.......2002-12-28

Music beautiful but too dreamy.........can easily put you to sleep. My fault...should have previewed first. I was looking for something more lush and upbeat like much of his other stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Same old soup warmed over.......2002-12-25

There is entirely too much material in this CD that has been done (and done...) by others. In addiion, there are too many tracks that are easy listening. I was looking for light classical. And very few of the classical tracks stray very far from a very well beaten path. This CD is probably the last Andre Rieu CD I will buy. Sorry.

Piffaro discs make this sedentary fool want to get up and dance. Renaissance dance music is a much-underrated source of general delight, anyway. You don't have to be the kind of specialist listener who loves medieval masses to get a kick out of this tasty, highly rhythmic music--the disco of an earlier era. The tunes are appealing, the sounds of the varied instruments consistently delightful. I rate discs of Renaissance dances not so much by their authenticity, a debatable matter anyway, but rather by their danceability. Piffaro discs rank consistently high in this respect, and they are realistically recorded. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Triumphant!.......2006-12-01

This is truly one of the best albums of Renaissance music currntly available! Purely instrumental! Much of it appears to be music for a royal court event or the like, with much use of brass and wind instruments. There are also many selections for the festival setting, usually involving the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. Too many albums of ancient music "pad" the content with monotonous choral polyphonic selections, perhaps starting out with one or two really good instrumental pieces. However, they did not do that in this one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Renaissance Faire. Buy it!.......2005-11-15

'Piffaro The Renaissance Band' is a Philadelphia group who has done several superior albums of Renaissance music for the label 'Archiv', late of Deutche Grammaphone, now part of Polygram. I was astonished when I heard from a student of one of the directors, Robert Wiemken, that the band is paid virtually nothing to make the record and have it distributed. While I would expect that from a minor label, it is surprising that an act should make it to Deutche Grammaphone and not be paid for their recording. I go into this minor digression because I am especially impressed by this recording and all their others as well.

I do take issue with it's being labelled a recording of 'wind' music, as there is ample representation from the family of string instruments, most famously the guitar and the hurdy gurdy.

Although I really enjoy 'old music', I'm not an expert on it, but I set out to distinguish this music from modern stuff, and the two I can find are the presence here of a lot of drone instruments such as the bagpipe and the hurdy gurdy and the absence of instruments such as the clarinet which give us that lushly woody tenor we hear in pieces such as 'Rapsody in Blue' or in some of Kurt Weill's German stage pieces. We also certainly miss the rich sounds of the piano, as the pianoforte has not been invented yet.

If you like old music, this band is a 'must hear'!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth the Listening.......2004-01-26

Simply lovely. Some whimsical, some more technically serious. In all, definitely worth the money and the time. One of my new favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship on ancient instruments...........2001-10-03

I wish composers were still writing for hurdy-gurdy @ crumhorn...what a wonderful sound. I especially liked "La Parma". I do believe a modern tunesmith has taken that melody @ recently made a rather haunting popular song from it; a female vocalist, I think. If anyone out there can remember what the name of that modern tune is @ will post it here, it will save me some on-going mental annoyance. You won't go wrong in buying this album!

5 out of 5 stars Piffaro Renaissance Band Superb.......2001-05-20

This CD has me dancing in the streets. I have played holes in the recording. The musicianship is extraordinary with excitement, love and a great warm sense of pleasure taken by everyone involved. Renaissance instruments are not generally known for subtlety or nuance, but these players work miracles. The percussion sections are also integral to the whole and thrilling, where appropriate. Piffaro, please keep your music coming.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection Right on Subject........2006-01-24

This 'Frans Bruggen Edition, Italian Recorder Sonatas' may seem like an insubstantial little piece, but if you have bought enough recordings of 'early music' and recordings of odd corners of the European classical world, you will appreciate how this recording stays right on subject. There is nothing here except Italian Recorder Sonatas. The only accompanyment you will hear is from a harpsicord. The great beauty of the recorder is front and center and you can appreciate its distinctive qualities which separate it from its more modern woodwinds such as the clarinet, the oboe, the bassoon and the English horn.

The publisher, Teldec has not, like Hyperion, indulged in little samples, and I appreciate their staying on message. Needless to say, the performances are outstanding and I am jealous that I cannot play as well as these performers!

I learned to love the recorder with this cd (of course many years ago) may be is a little old fashion in style, but stills there as a reference point to every recorder player in the world.

Nigel Eaton is one of the great hurdy gurdy players of our time. He's recorded widely in popular (remember Page and Plant?) as well as classical performances. This is a well-rounded selection of 18th century and beyond--not to be missed by any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Music I grew up with and loved.......2005-08-05

My parents had this record and played it over and over again, along with Segovia's Bach recordings. They're the reason I took up classical guitar. The album uses non-traditional (for this kind of music anyway) instruments, yet doesn't disrespect the music in any way. To this day one of my favorite arrangements for the Sonata in G minor Larghetto. I've been trying to get a copy of this album on CD as my family considers our vinyl copy an "heirloom". Sadly I can't seem to find any online. I guess I'll just have to keep visiting amazon.com for the audio samples! Sony, have a heart!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect background music for a genteel dinner party,.......1999-06-26

or just for relaxing and organizing your thoughts. The pieces are familiar even to people who think they've never heard Baroque music, and the playing is so impressive and musical that my "I Hate Classical Music" teenage son was blown away!

    5 out of 5 stars Near perfection..........2001-05-18

Being an instrumentalist, I've never been bothered by the complaints of my friends that Meredith Monk has no lyrics -- like a great, perfectly blended wind ensemble, her cast gives a flawless and nuanced performance throughout. At equal turns ecstasy of beauty, eery and haunting, and laugh-out-loud spritely, the two parts I didn't like on this CD were, unsuprisingly, the improvisational bagpipe and the eery but jarring Madwoman's Song. But with an experimenter like Meredith Monk, not everything will hit with everybody, and these thematically provided appropriate contrast to the unrelenting beauty of the rest of the CD. Ms. Monk's unique style and ever strong voice fit perfectly with the medieval setting. Now, anyone know where to find the movie this is the soundtrack to? I've been intrigued with finding it since the day I got this CD of peace and beauty...

5 out of 5 stars Her most satisfying work.......2000-11-13

The finest, most fully realized Meredith Monk cd, methinks. The medieval theme does her well, puts her vocal explorations in a context that really brings out the magic in the music. One of the few CDs I know that can completely transform the feel of a room it's being played in. Wonderful.

The York Waits' time machine takes you on a relaxing journey back to the 15th century. I have really enjoyed this selection. Highly recommended for those who enjoy early music.

5 out of 5 stars Music fit for a king.......2000-01-01

This is one of my favourite early music CDs. Like David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, the York Waits have a gift for bringing old music to life. The whole CD (all instrumental music) brays and roars with a marvellous hoarse energy. If Richard III patronized music like this, he can't have been all bad. Most highly recommended.
