Anyone who's heard 100 portraits would agree that this is the most underated musical act out there. Though quickly passed off as just another folk band by some, 100 portraits brings a sound that is not only beautiful, but completely unique.
I was amazed at how such sound could come from two vocals, a guitar, and a handfull of african drums. The lyrics couldn't be more poetic. "Around My Neck," has kept my friends and me in deep conversations about the lyrics for hours before.
If anyone deserves success, it's these two. They charge little or no money to book them for a concert, usually just transportation and a place to stay. It's strange how music sounds so much better when you know the hearts of the musicians are in the right place. I pray God blesses them unmeasurably

This album is filled with many tracks that will really speak to one's heart. Told mostly from a lover's perspective, it goes through all of love's many emotions. These songs were also written as love ballads directly from our Savior to us. It is an incredible way to view God's love for us, as his bride.

All of the songs by 100 Portraits on the cd Five Wise Virgins speak of the love that Jesus has for us, through lyrics taken in part from Song of Solomon. It truly is a love story from Jesus to His bride, which is the church.

I've always admired William Walton in a modest way, now more so than ever, thanks to Lloyd-Jones's stimulating series of recordings on Naxos. The present CD is no exception. "The Quest," whose score was "lost" or rather misplaced for a number of years, emerges here as a major score. Written during World War II and based on Spenser's "The Faerie Queene," it is a ballet that betrays Walton's debt to other 20th-century ballet composers, notably Ravel and Stravinsky, though the ripe and piquant orchestration with its colorful use of percussion is Walton's own a la "Belshazzar's Feast." None of the jazzy interpolations from that score here, however. There are brief references to popular music and dance, but this is a more straight-laced work, as befits the spiritually weighty subject matter. Certainly the finest of its several fine scenes is the last, which takes place at the House of Holiness. The music works up to a grand apotheosis that recalls the last moments of Ravel's "Ma Mere L'Oye" and Stravinsky's "The Firebird," though the strange, flatted, carillon-like descending figure that dominates the very end--in a din of tubular bells--is pure Walton. It has that deliciously acid quality even his most triumphal music sometimes has--vide the First Symphony's finale.

Much more familiar is "The Wise Virgins," one of Walton's greatest hits, a reorchestration of music from Bach's cantatas designed for a ballet based on the parable of the wise virgins from the Gospels. Lloyd-Jones and his ensemble, abetted by Naxos' fine sonics, do it full justice.

"Siesta," a work written in the 20's that Walton apparently had a fondness for throughout his life, is a strange little affair. Sort of like Bartok's "Interrupted Intermezzo" from the Concerto for Orchestra, Walton's languid little piece is punctuated by petulant thrusts from the orchestra. Bad dreams? Anyway, "Siesta" sounds like an outtake from Walton's satiric gem "Facade."

All in all, some very accomplished music by an intriquing modern master.

For some reason, Walton's ballet "The Quest" is not well known. It should be. It has all the wonderful features of Walton's orchestral music (a touch of romantic lyricism, modern harmony, melodic invention, masterful orchestration, etc.) including a treat from one of masters of the variation - variations based on the Seven Deadly Sins. It is fun to try to guess which variation belongs to which Sin before you read the track titles (I got four out of seven, but the fourth was just a guess). The final movement, "The House of Holiness" is truly majestic. If you have Walton's orchestral music your collection is incomplete without this piece. "The Wise Virgins" is Walton's orchestration of some of Bach's music. I found this collection somewhat disappointing - I thought the orchestration would be a bit more inventive, a bit less conventional. Still, I am happy to own this orchestration by Walton, and the inclusion of "The Quest" makes this CD well worth the price.
