Album Description
Nine highly acclaimed original baseball story-songs. Among the characters covered on this cd are Eddie Klepp (first white man to play in the Negro Leagues), Moe Berg (a catcher who also was a US spy just before WWII), Max Patkin (Clown Prince of Baseball), Dock Ellis (who pitched a no hitter under the influence of LSD), Richie Allen (booed by racist Philadelphia fans, he'd write "b-o-o" in the dirt in response), Fred Bonehead Merkle (whose baserunning error cost the NY Giants the pennant in 1908), and Eddie Waitkus (shot by a female stalker, his story was the basis for the movie "The Natural").

Chuck Hits A Home Run.......2005-03-02
I had the pleasure of seeing Chuck perform some of these songs one fine sunny afternoon before a Tourists' game at McCormick field. The music on the CD will make you feel as though your sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in 1967 and the wind is blowing out, and Richie Allen is coming to the plate for the Phillies and you just know that the Cubs are going to lose again, but, hey, the beer is cold and it's not February. It's not all sunshine and apple pie, however, as Chuck covers some of baseballs darker and infamous stories most notably "Letters In The Dirt". Chuck writes with a light and clever touch. You can't help but doff your cap to him.

title of review.......2005-05-26
I remember listening to her old album Anchorless after seeing it in a bunch of online second-hand stores for like $1. It was a bland but tasteful 90s major label chick-rock album that I was never fully into, but I kinda liked it. Like most major label artists or bands whose albums end up out of print and in the bargain bins I assumed she'd never release anything else, so it was a nice surprise to discover this, her 4th album, which is all acoustic. Her music still has the same kind of intangible likeability about it, it seems like it's lacking something, but you still don't want to stop listening to it once you start. She's a smart singer, she knows she has a good voice but she never pushes herself to use it in a perfect professional way, she sings with just the right amount of lazyness to add a relaxed charm to her delivery without sacrificing tunefulness. It reminds me a bit of Jewel's first album. Some of the chord progressions are kinda bland, but somehow that never seems to be a fault that detracts from the overall effect of the music. This really is a vocally oriented album, as evidenced by the way the vocals are mixed louder than the guitar, and that would usually be offputting to me, because I'm a not a vocally-oriented music listener, but the way this girl uses her voice as an instrument transcends all the rules I thought I'd placed on what makes good music.

Love.......2005-08-29
I've been a huge Ember Swift fan for the last 4 years, I've been to over 15 live shows. Until this album came out, I didn't think any of her studio albums really captured the magic expressed in their live performances. This album changed all that. It is my favorite album of all time. Each song is perfect, and the lyrics actually mean something. I try to listen to this album at least once a week if not more. I would most highly suggest purchasing this album (and all the others), and seeing Ember live when she comes to your area.
something different AND great.......2005-05-03
i picked up this cd at an independent bookstore and am sooo thrilled i bought it. it is different than most music we hear today, and that will turn some people off - but having recently listened to ani difranco (a great female musician) a hell of a lot, my ears and mind were very open. i got hooked on this cd in about 2 listens! it is so much fun, and you can sing a long, and i can imagine how great live Ember must be. her words are very sincere and the music is unique and just beautiful. unfortunately i lost this cd, but i am going to just buy it again. sorry this review isnt more detailed, but like i said, i lost the cd so i can't give the review it deserves right now!
Fabulous!.......2004-09-07
Ember Swift was a very, very pleasant surprise. This folk-mistress fuses jazz, funk, and punk with poignant songwriting, fun guitar playing, and a sometimes political spin. If you have any interest at all, AT ALL with Ani DiFranco or any number of folk singers with an edge, you have got to give this girl a try. I especially loved the little french number, and H20 was terrific.

Customer Reviews:
Treat yourself to an hour of honest, heartfelt music..........2004-07-07
This is the MOST well written, performed and produced CD in my collection. It's clear from the very up beat beginning with the song "Sometimes", to the very moving "Out of Love" all the way through to the final selection when he briefly shares his outlook on life with us, that this artist has shared his heart and soul. "Friends" sums up what so few people see when it comes to relationships - take your time, enjoy the friendship aspect; smile, laugh and most importantly love. It is at present my favorite song on the CD.
If you like to be told exactly what to think, then this CD is not for you. Jeffrey Todd challenges you to think about the words he's chosen, to apply those thoughts to your life and make your own decisions as to what influence they will have. This is THE CD that you will play over and over and over.
I can only hope that there are more of these songs to come...

Album Description
Some riddles are meant to be solved; others, to be savored, with new wonders and insights to be discovered each time around. Riddles marks the recording debut of Jamie Solow, a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter whose work combines the organic feel of traditional folk with the more contemporary textures of artists such as Sarah McLachlan and Tracy Chapman.
But Jamie's is a distinctive new presence on the musical scene. Her voice is warmly expressive sometimes ethereal and almost childlike, sometimes ballasted with the weight of emotion and her songs tell stories based on real-life loves, losses, and other experiences. On the deceptively simple title track, she sings, When a hand I've held is sliding away, I think love will go on, but then, I turn around and it's gone.
From the lilting folk-jazz of Passionflower and its ride through the countryside to the more urban longing of Freeway, the songs on Riddles take listeners on a journey of sound and vision. The achingly beautiful Joe's Song was written as a tribute to a friend who died of AIDS, while in the reggae-inflected Don't Go Dirty, she playfully but insistently asks why people keep their hearts walled in. Ultimately, in The Softest Hour, the CD's striking final track, love and passion are carried to their inevitable conclusion: sonic nirvana.
Customer Reviews:
Weaving a musical web of riddles and paradoxes.......2000-12-08
Jamie Solow is one of those rare gifts: a wide-ranging musical talent and a soul wise in the heart and in experience. Listening to her creations allows me to journey into some of the lightest and darkest moments of life's journey, to laugh, cry and dance with the deep beauty of it all. Her melodies and rhythms revisit me as I move through my days and nights, and I feel touched by a wise and gentle presence listening to her voice. If you enjoy the challenge of great songwriting and performing, as with Joni Mitchell, you will feel lucky indeed to have this new CD by Jamie Solow to listen to again and again. It's the perfect way to bring light into your own Winter Solstice and holidays!
