Product Description
The debut solo CD from Chicago's O'Connor features urban honky tonk originals, Blue Ridge mountain-style harmonizing, SoCal country flavorings, and some truly uptown citified soul. It's full of style and grit and it finally puts a spotlight on Nora's amazingly sweet, yet deliciously salty, beautiful soaring blackbird of a voice. In the past, she's lent her talents to Andrew Bird, The Blacks, The New Pornographers, Archer Prewitt, Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Mavis Staples, The Aluminum Group, Jeff Tweedy, and many more.

Amazon.com essential recording

Cassandra Wilson is a postmodern jazz singer, a conceptualist who sees no dividing lines between genres. If her career had commenced in the 1970s rather than the label-conscious 1990s she would have been marketed as a mainstream pop diva. Her magnificent voice and interpretive genius mark her as a jazz singer for the ages, however. She finds her material wherever her fancy takes her and remakes it in her own image, whether it be the country blues of Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Hellhound On My Trail," the soul of Ann Peebles's "I Can't Stand the Rain," the elegant R&B of Charles Brown's "Tell Me You'll Wait for Me," the melodic pop of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey," or her own "Redbone"--and the title track, accompanied by steel guitarist Gib Wharton. --John Swenson

5 out of 5 stars Repeatedly unexpected. Serious jazz remakes old favorites........2006-03-23

Repeatedly unexpected. Spare, care-ful arrangements, each specifically formulated for each song, each matching her rich, dark alto. First and foremost, serious jazz, but also something entirely different, reflecting an eclectic song choice (e.g., Robert Johnson, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Ann Peebles, herself). Sometimes a primal awareness, but mainly a remarkable artistic sensibility. She DEMANDS attention, completely remaking even old favorites into something totally new. S: tr 2-Come on in my kitchen; tr 4-Children of the night, tr 5-Hellhound on my trail; tr 7-Sankofa; tr 10-Tupelo honey.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet as Tupelo honey.......2004-11-23

Hands down one of the best covers of Tupelo Honey I've heard. For some reason this stands out as one Cassandra's best recordings to me. Great range of voice and songs in this outing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the '90's.......2004-01-25

Of all of the vocal jazz albums released in the 1990's, this remains one of the best. Ms. Wilson shows tremendous range and diversity here: from a cover of "Tupelo Honey" that outdoes Van Morrison (if that's even possible), to a wonderfully evocative "Hellhound on My Trail", to "You Don't Know What Love Is". to the African-based trio in the middle of the set, it doesn't get much more eclectic than this. Yet, it's all interesting, with always interesting instrumentation. I think Cassandra Wilson falls in the mold of Billie Holiday--one with a relatively limited voice who just brings it all to the table--but with wider diversity. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars A fine song stylist.......2003-10-25

Ms. Wilson has a wonderful voice that reminds me somewhat of that of Cleo Laine. The problem for great voices--now I'm also thinking of Whitney Houston--is that they don't always make great albums.

This one is what I would describe as late night music, the kind of thing that you put on when you have arrived home having drunk rather too much, and want to hear something clear and pure to clear your head.

My favorite track on this is the Robert Johnson number Hellhound On My Trail, which is beautifully done with solo guitar accompaniment. I would like to have heard more of Ms. Wilson in this mode, but this album is a bit of a sampler--eclectic if you like--mixing blues, jazz and country, with violins creeping in every now and again.

Not a bad album at all, but I suspect that Ms. Wilson is capable of an even better one, so I reserve judgement a bit. I also have a feeling, and this is just a hunch, that this album may appeal more to female listeners than to the guys.

My star rating system goes like this:

5 stars--an absolute classic
4 stars--the artist is on top form here, a good buy
3 stars--fans of this artist should enjoy this album
2 stars--some good stuff, but inconsistent
1 star--just not good enough

5 out of 5 stars learn to love it.......2003-03-28

So Cassandra's "New Moon Daughter" is a gem too, but this album is less known and, while it didn't make an immediate impression on me, I now listen to it a lot more. There's basically more variety in song style and arrangement and, if you like Cassandra, then just the sound of her voice is heaven. (If you haven't heard her, her voice is about as distinct as Nina Simone's.) The key point with Cassandra is: nobody sounds like her so if she isn't in your collection then nothing like her is in your collection. Her voice is deep and sultry, her music spacious, unrushed -- there's something distinctly southern about it. She is one of Nora Jones' inspirations, but where Nora's voice is a gentle breeze, Cassandra's is a gathering cloud, and there is no lounge sound to Cassandra's music -- the instruments bleed raw notes.

4 out of 5 stars Some Nostalgia................2005-05-26

Some of the songs on this album are hard to get, if not impossible. Most of the music was played at least a year before this album was released, however, when the underground scene became known as "rave" it was all over.
You're best looking for the Channel X songs, as those are probably the best in this compilation. Happy Hunting!

4 out of 5 stars Back when.......2004-08-03

I remember listening to this CD when I was a little kid. It basically has shaped my musical taste to what it is now. My brother found it on the beach one day and brought it home. I was in love with it. Thyen it dissapeared again. I still have the happy face in my head from the CD face.

1 out of 5 stars Awful..........2004-05-08

This compilation and others like it set the rave scene back before it even had the chance to mature. When I told people I went to raves, they had the impression the music there was like this. On the contrary, these tracks are now part of pro-sports anthems and other very uncool settings. This type of music was never at rave parties anyways, more like terrible clubs full of bad drugs, guido guys and tank tube mamas.

4 out of 5 stars Apotheosis - Ofortuna.......2004-04-03

--Reviewer: Brettjoe228@netscape.com from Detroit, MI
When I first purchased this CD, there was a song on the CD that was one of the original techno/club remixes of the time, and it used Carmina Burana--

Apotheosis - Ofortuna
is the song you are talking about and is missing from this version. It was the best song on the original version of Rave Til Dawn.

5 out of 5 stars The Version I Have (1992).......2002-09-13

For those who were asking, the songs on the 1992 release of "rave 'til dawn" were: 1) Ottorongo - "f**k you" (Singalongmotherf**ker Mix); 2) The Movement - "jump" (Mutha Mix); 3) 2 Unlimited - "get read for this" (Orchestral Mix); 4) Blue Pearl - "can you feel the passion" (Palladium Mix); 5) Code Red - "dreamer, dream"; 6) Two Little Boys - "stylophonia"; 7) Praga Khan featuring Jade 4 U - "injected with a poison" (MNO Power Mix); 8) Shut Up & Dance - "green man" (Rum & Black Mix); 9) Lords of Acid - "take control"; 10) Channel X - "a million colors"

5 out of 5 stars So pretty it hurts.......2007-04-08

I don't get out much (I go to bed too early) so maybe that's why I'd never heard of Nora O'Connor before a few months ago when I saw her at one of Robbie Fulks' 'Secret Country' shows at the Old Town School of Folk Music. But sometimes I like to know what I'm getting into so I bought this album first and now months later I'm still playing it and I can't take it off. Not only are the songs great and exceedingly catchy, but Ms. O'Connor has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. Listen to her on the final song 'Down Here' and you'll know what I mean. Unbelievably pretty. Nora O'Connor is of the finest singers ever. Do yourself a big favor and check her out. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Another rising Chicagoan?.......2005-05-25

I hope Nora O'Connor spends more time on her own material and less time backing up other Bloodshot artists. This album is a solid country album with a touch of alternative - bucking the alt-country trend. "Revolver" and "Love Letters" are definite standouts.

4 out of 5 stars Another jewel in the Bloodshot crown.......2004-12-20

I suspect Nora O'Connor must be Chicago's unofficial "backing vocalist", as her collaboration with the people listed in the editorial review above seems to suggest. When harmony vocals are needed, she's the obvious choice for the job. Thankfully, she finally steps up centre stage with her debut album and comes into her own.
She's a talented singer, with a pleasant, gentle voice. Even when she sings downbeat songs, the sweetness of her voice brightens them up.
The first song, "My backyard", which is also one of the two tracks penned by her, the other being "Tonight", is breezy and jovial, thanks to a nice harmonica accompaniment and words like "I've got plenty of [friends]" and "I've got everything I need in my backyard".
She has indeed plenty of friends and they come up in droves to help with their musical expertise; among them, Kelly Hogan, who complements each song with discreet backing vocals, Andrew Bird (his contribution is particularly evident in "Bottoms" and "Tonight", where his violin fills the gaps between the melancholic lyrics) and Matt Weber, whose banjo and lap steel give the "roots" feeling you expect from a Bloodshot record.
However, don't expect a roots-rock/country-rock album in the usual vein of the label. Rather, these are mostly pop songs "countrified" by the inclusion of violin, lap steel, banjo and acoustic guitars. That's why this album should please a larger audience than the hard-core Bloodshot fans.
Personal favourites, apart from the above-mentioned "My backyard" and "Bottoms", are "Revolver", "OK with me" and "Nightingale". "Revolver", as the previous reviewer said, has a simple, yet catchy motif, "OK with me" is a fast-paced country number and "Nightingale" seems to come out of a traditional folk collection à la Songcatcher.
However, all songs are good and, at 32 minutes, you can play the whole album from start to finish without skipping a track. Still, "Love letters", while honourable, seems a bit out of place, a "noirish" love ballad more suited for Ms. Case's voice and attitude (think of "Look For Me (I'll Be Around)" and "Runnin' Out of Fools" from Blacklisted).
To sum up, it's a lovely album, well worth buying if you are a fan of Americana/country/roots/folk.

5 out of 5 stars A really great record........2004-09-07

This is one of my favorite Americana/indie country albums of the year, kicking off with a quartet of memorable, compelling songs, each one a little gem. The doleful, indie-ish "Revolver" is perhaps the catchiest song on here, with a lovely, simple acoustic riff that stands up there with the best stuff Gillian Welch has ever done. Midway through, the music shifts into more pensive, singer-songwriterish territory, and Neil Young's influence (and perhaps Joni Mitchell's?) seeps into the album's end. Chicagoan O'Connor is one of those folks who has played with a bazillion other artists, including Neko Case, Jeff Tweedy, The New Pornographers and a regular gig with Andrew Bird's Bow Of Fire. Now she's finally come out with an album of her own and it's really, really good. Finally an artist on the Bloodshot label who isn't striking a pose when they put on some twang! I can't wait to hear more.

Anchored behind saucy Latin beats and spicy guitar phrasings, Yavaz sets the dials to PARTY and never look bck. Barry Bedore is the underrated guitar God extraordinaire! Seeing them live at Croce's in downtown San Diego n Friday nights is a special treat because they are such a dedicated and talented group of musicians that you never quite know what to expect from them. Phillipe Saisse is a studio wizard, overlaying programmed drums with a variety of modern and vintage keyboards from mini-Moog to vibraphone. But it's his playfulness that gives this CD its special character, his willingness to mix techno-dance grooves, a horn ensemble, and squiggles of analog synthesizers under his own lush piano work and the performances of collaborators such as guitarist Jeff Golub and singer Cara Jackson. Saisse can build a pensive mood, then suddenly spin it into another soundscape, with retuned piano, artificial orchestras, and muffled Vocoder conversations bubbling to the surface. "Minds Alike," with trumpet, tenor sax, and acoustic bass, is a contemporary take on traditional jazz, while "Halfway 'til Dawn" is a moody mix of weighty chords, Jeff Beal's mellow trumpet, and Saisse's own sparkling piano. "La Vie," cowritten and sung by Angelique Kidjo, adds elements of African choir to an already catchy line, equally effective in both its original form and the pop remix. There's a chimerical creativity here that marks Saisse for special attention. --Adam Rains

4 out of 5 stars A trill to chill to........2003-06-10

This album is really good! It has a unique way of blending into a particular rhythm of it's own. Although I'm not exactly a major fan of most chill-out albums (especially the latter releases of those Ultra Chilled CDs), this one went easy on my ears. Very downbeat and quite classic! I smiled when hearing the very largo-ish jazzy "Sumemertime" by Joolz Gianni, after all it IS a Fitzgerald piece originally. Actually, this entire CD seems to be graced with jazz elements, which is most likely where chilling out originated from.

Alot of these are songs from various commercials, which isn't necessarily a BAD thing, but something for those who aren't looking for a 'stereotypical commercial' chillout album to bear note of.

All-in-all, one with an open ear to all types of music will grow to appreciate this one. Might not be for those hardcore chill-out-ers (heh), but it's got nice layback tracks.

      5 out of 5 stars A Collection Essential.......2002-09-30

I picked up this CD in London. It is a really great compilation filled with cool hip tunes that are great for relaxation. A must when looking to cool one's jets and relax over dinner or with friends. My favorite tune is My Heart's Desire by Angelus - a beautiful ethereal piece. Worth importing.
