Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
‘Flower Of Scotland' was written in 1970, but sounds timeless. The Scotland's Rugby Team in preference to ‘Scotland The Brave', another anthem, which is more revered played as a stirring bagpipe tune than it's rather sentimental lyrics, adopted the song. The words of ‘Scots Wha Hae', written by Robbie Burns in 1787, Scotland's second most popular anthem, refer to the Scottish patriots Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, of Braveheart fame. This patriotic song is a favourite of many nationalists but is not widely heard outside Scotland. In 1992 a Glasgow advertising firm was asked to create a jingle for Tennent's Lager. Little did it know that the song would have such a powerful impact on the lives of so many? The song ‘Caledonia', sung by Scots blues singer Frankie Miller, was used in a TV ad that compared the life of a Scot's émigré in London with the lifestyle back home. Glasgow won so easily that the brewery for fear of showing favour to the Scottish Nat! ionalist Party pulled the song. When Hector MacDonald committed suicide in 1903, Scotland felt betrayed by "English' colonists. Born in The Highlands in 1857, he rose from lowly rank fighting in the Afghan War of the 1870s to become a Knighted Major General in 1902. A genuine hero from the modern day equivalent of the Marine Corps, The Gordon Highlanders, he fell victim to the high morals of the Victorian era that he so proudly served. He was quickly immortalized in this tune, 'Hector the Hero' by James Scott Skinner. The other songs and tunes on this album have similar stories to tell. Tunes such as ‘The Gael' and ‘Amazing Grace' are performed by the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Band, and The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, another cultural icon, perform "Auld Lang Syne', perhaps the best known Scottish anthem of all.

Product Description
On this album we have collected some of the most powerful and evocative music to emerge from Scotland, which can best be described as anthemic - the call of a nation reaching deep into the hearts and minds of its people. Inspiring pride, courage and conviction in all those who hear these powerful Scottish songs.

The mid-70s belonged to a group of hopelessly plaid Scotsmen who named themselves after a northern Michigan resort town. With an affect on fans that resembled Beatlemania in terms of screaming, fainting, and pledges of undying love, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed a string of U.K. pop hits along with modest American success. In retrospect, the band's music is still sugary enough to give listeners a toothache; however, there is a certain charming innocence to tunes like "Saturday Night," "Summer Love Sensation," and (of course) "Shang-a-Lang." Boy-band nostalgia, anyone? --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Great Retro Present.......2007-06-04

I purchased this for a Christmas gift for my sister. (yes..early shopping). We loved the Bay City Rollers growing up and watched them every Saturday on the Kroft Super Show. This is a great "you're not going to guess what I got you" gift for someone or even yourself who loves to relive the old days of this kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories.......2007-02-27

I stumbled across this while shopping for something else. Wow! This brings back memories of my "younger" days! If you are looking for one cd that will give you most of the popular and memorable songs from the Bay City Rollers then this is the one for you.

1 out of 5 stars What a bunch of dumbkuffs these boy-banders are.......2006-02-28

The Bay City Rollers are what is played when one goes to meet Satan and you also have to sit next to Brataney Sneers and Justa Stinkercake. Saturday Night was these bozos' only hit. The Baddest Critic is a hypocrite pallies. He does detest all 1970s music. I mean what guys would wear skirts on-stage but these losers. Avoid or HEEGOTCHA!!

5 out of 5 stars Bay City Rollers, The Definitive Collection.......2006-02-25

For anyone growing up in the early to late seventies, this album should bring back great memories of football games and dance contests. I recommend this to anyone wanting to take a trip down memory lane.

Pancho: What guys would wear skirts on-stage but these losers. Toro and Pancho say buy a Spanish music record by the Maharichi or risk being called stupido!

Crotchety critics complained that this Glaswegian quartet sounded too close to cult Memphis band Big Star for their own or anyone else's good, but Bandwagonesque proved that unapologetic homage can sometimes work. The Fanclub's mesh of yearning, ethereal melody and cranked, feed-backing guitars came together superbly on "The Concept," "Metal Baby," and the thrashing "Star Sign"--mini-blizzards of mellifluousness that yoked Alex Chilton to Crazy Horse and the Ramones. Dismiss "Alcholiday" as "record collection rock" if you must: it doesn't make the track any less sublime. --Barney Hoskyns

4 out of 5 stars crisp and fresh.......2007-05-25

15 years after its release, this album still sounds really crisp and fresh. I can picture this being on the radio today even moreso than in the early 90's. Great listen from a bunch of great Scottish lads.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to the POP ROCKIN' Brit group: Teenage Fan Club.......2007-04-18

BANDWAGONESQUE was my introduction to Teenage Fanclub. This is "The Fannies" 3rd release and their first successful achievement. It also gained notoriety by beating out Nirvana's Nevermind, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and R.E.M 's Out of Time as 'Album of the Year' by Spin magazine.
This album's lyrics and melodies shows that the Band were highly influenced by The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and of course Big Star.
I really can't believe Teenage Fanclub weren't considered the future of British Rock. Oasis and Blur won over that Crown. Blech! ...Kind of sad since Teenage Fanclub features 3 Master singer/songwriters in Blake, Love & McGinley.
BANDWAGONESQUE has so many wonderful highlights in twelve songs. It seems like it would be a 'Greatest Hits' for any above average Rock band. Although their later stuff is just as Good. Check out 1995's Grand Prix, which is even more lush w/ guitars a shinin' bright and clear, also no fuzz-boxes. Yep, BANDWAGONESQUE & GRAND PRIX are my two favorite studio albums by this marvelous band.
My favorites on BANDWAGONESQUE include: Opener - "The Concept" - "December" - "What You Do to Me" - "I Don't Know" - *Star Sign* - "Metal Baby" & "Sidewinder" but ALL are close to perfect 'lil pop-rockin' Hits, well to me at least.

4 out of 5 stars Memories of all kinds.......2007-04-02

This album reminds me of a great alternative rock radio station in Minnesota circa 1991. Just at the time I thought "rock" was dead, along came that radio station and albums like this. "The Concept," "What You Do To Me," and "Star Sign" received regular rotation on the old KJJO, and what great tunes they were. Over the course of time this album has become a favorite in my collection. Good times. Great tunes. If it weren't for my discovery of classic alternative bands like this I'd probably be listening to country-and-western now. Ugh. :)

5 out of 5 stars deserves its classic status........2007-02-13

from the stunning opener "the concept," with its wonderfully lyrical guitar solos, on through the closing intrumental "is this music?" this is a power pop classic. other standout tunes include "pet rock," which includes great hard rock guitar, "sidewinder," full of exquisite harmonies, and "guiding star," a song of majestic gently beauty. this is a recording all rock/pop lovers should have.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Classic melodic pop!.......2006-12-04

If you love perfect early 1970's style pop, this is for you! One of my all time favorite cds, rich with lush harmonies and rock and roll guitars. Well constructed songs that rival any of the many bands they have been compared to (Big Star, Badfinger.)

This is their first commercial effort and all of their other releases are great as well. Start with this one and buy your way through the collection. This is an underrated gem which rarely strays far from the cd player.

    Album Description

HAMMERED is the Wicked Tinkers second CD and gets its name from the second tune on the album, "Hammer on the Anvil" (or that persistent pounding you hear listening to their drums and pipes). There are a few tunes and songs that could be considered slow and beautiful, although the Tinkers don't advocate such things. If you liked the first CD, we think you will love this one. The Wicked Tinkers say "Most tunes on this CD are from the Highlands of Scotland, where the music we love was born. A few of the tunes are Irish (Warren's heritage), who we feel are brothers to the Scots. Some tunes are Canadian (where our own John MacAdams hails from), a very Scottish place. A wee bit from Australia rounds out the lot." "We are thankful to all our fans for their support of this unusual music. It is they who help us continue."

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Good performance....but fatally flawed by smut.............2004-07-09

Why on earth the Tinkers, who are otherwise terrific performers, chose to include an infantile vocal track (the kind considered risque at the elementary school level) defies the imagination....and then to repeat it in garbled form as the final track! Their first CD was a true revelation.....this one's a bummer.

5 out of 5 stars Ceud Mile Failte! - Wicked Tinkers ROCK!!!.......2003-07-31

If you've never been to a highland games, or never experienced Celtic music and boundless energy, listen to the Wicker Tinkers FIRST! The music is incredible, the energy and showmanship is UNBELIVEABLE. If you get a chance to see these guys play live, stop everything and GO. We bought all three CD's and am hoping for more.

My punk rocker son's comment - "Wow, I had no idea about this music. These guys are awesome."

    On a scale of 1-10, a 20 at least.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the spirit of the highlands!.......2002-03-21

The Wicked Tinkers represent the real spirit of the Highlands. It's not the music you hear from the pipe bands on the field. It's what you'd hear at the Caleigh afterwards. It's wild and it is [sensual]! You feel the drums in your body and hear the pipes in your soul. The addition of Wayne Belger on the didgeridoo adds a primal element that sets them apart and makes the music truly unique. Keep your eye on these boys, they're going to go all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Drums and pipes to move you.......2001-06-21

Literally! This is my all-time favourite CD to pop in and drive to! 'Radar Love' is a rollicking, drum filled sensation. And let's not forget the all time requested 'Amazing Grace/Scotland the Brave' combo! If you love pipes and drums, then Wicked Tinkers will fill your need. And if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO! Even better with new members.

5 out of 5 stars bang the drum.......2001-06-21

Great CD with fantastic pipes by Aaron. And if you ever have a chance to see them in concert, do not hesitate. It'll make your weekend.

    5 out of 5 stars These Brit-POWER "Pop"sters GREATEST HITS 1990-2003.......2007-04-02

I'll admit I am normally not a fan of GREATEST HIT albums; but to me - Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Six Seconds: A Short Cut to TEENAGE FANCLUB...exceeded all my past expectations on that account. Many "Best Ofs" feature the band's recordings in chronological order from a debut through the band's last album, which may not have much variety in between. That is not the case for Teenage Fanclub though, they mix up and rearrange MOST of their best tracks on this Jam-packed 21 songs; clocking in at a GOOD 79 minutes worth of music!
So of course the band had to make some omissions, like "Metal Baby" - "December" - "I'll Make It Clear" and others.
It did however include my favorites: "Ain't That Enough" - "Star Sign" - "Sparky's Dream" - "Neil Jung" - "Radio" - "My Uptight Life", really all of them!
This is really all you need if you are at all interested in the absolutely brilliant songwriting skills of this trio: Norman Blake, Gerard Love & Raymond McGinley. Three talented minds heavily influenced by Big Star (you'll see the resemblance once you hear them) putting forth their best all on one Cd. 4766 Seconds...also include 3 new "hits" to add to this release(2003), along w/ 3 each from "Bandwagnesque"(1991) & "Howdy"(2001). There are 2 songs from "Thirteen"(1993) < considered somewhat of a low point in the Fannies' career, but Thirteen has my favorite song "Radio" on it, also on this. Four songs...from "Songs from Northern Britain & Five songs from "Grand Prix"(1995) If you are a fan, like me of Big Star #1 Record/Radio City, than I do believe you would REALLY like this. I still get chills once this Cd plays all the way through from opening track to closing track. - 5 STARS!

5 out of 5 stars 4766 Seconds of Pure Pop Genius........2005-03-10

4766 SECONDS is one of my all-time favorite cds, and in a world of dumbed-down popular music, Teenage Fanclub has never sounded better. This definitive "best-of" compilation is a work of pure pop genius. The band's warm, feel-good harmonies are reminiscent of a Sixties' band, a sweet blend of the Byrds, Beach Boys, and the Beatles, only with an edge, and the instrumentation is filled with fuzzy guitars, psychedelic riffs, and catchy hooks. The tracks on this compilation cd include "The Concept," "Ain't That Enough," "The World'll Be OK," "Everything Flows," "Star Sign," "Mellow Doubt," "I Need Direction" (my favorite song on the cd), "About You," "What You Do To Me," "Empty Space," "Sparky's Dream," "I Don't Want Control Of You," "Hang On," "Did I Say," "Don't Look Back," "Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From" (my second favorite tune), "Neil Jung," "Radio," "Dumb Dumb Dumb," "Planets," and "My Uptight Life." For the full effect, I recommend listening to this cd on an Apple iPod.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!!.......2004-11-10

I am not going to bother you lot with too many superlatives about this Scottish band. Needless to say there are ommisions to this 'Best Of' compilation such as Mount Everest and If I Never See You Again, and yet it is a quality retrospective of their work. They remind me of The Beach Boys, not only because of the close harmonies, but also the fact that a lot of the songs are very understated in tone. But also Nirvana, as they could prove just as comfortable with an accoustic guitar as an electric guitar. The MAIN reason why I purchased this album though is because of the 3 new tracks available on it. Of the three new songs I would have to rate 'Did I Say' as not only the best track on the album, but quite possibly one of the most beautiful and uplifting tunes of the last ten years by anyone. Forget Travis, Coldplay and all the other British music chancers of recent years, Teenage Fanclub are the real deal!

4 out of 5 stars exactly what i was looking for.......2004-08-04

it's true: when placed up against some of the 70s punk and 80s college rock bands that influenced them so profoundly, teenage fanclub's 90s alterna-pop songs can sound hopelessly thin. but we can't fault the fannies for that. this is as good an assembly of guitar pop songs as any other band that ever saw a stage could put out. teenage fanclub did for me what matthew sweet never could: they made this inherently flawed (and often transparent) genre emotional and significant. i'm glad i got this record: it's sunny, it's catchy, it's uplifting, well-constructed, easy to listen to, and good for those nostalgia trips...and, let's be honest: it means i don't have to buy any more teenage fanclub records.

    5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection.......2004-07-30

This is a well thought out collection of the band's music. A few songs are taken from each record, and so the less catchy songs from Songs of Northern Britain are placed alongside the very melodious earlier songs. The listener is thus aware of the increased maturity of the band with time. Songs like Your Love is the Place I Come From can be ignored on a single listening, but with a few listens, become favourites from the album. Rather in the same manner that Dylan's One Too Many Mornings can be ignored at first.

An essential piece of music for anyone who loves melodies and one of the best cds I've heard in a long time.

    Album Description

On this album we have collected some of the most powerful and evocative music to emerge from Scotland, which can best be described as anthemic - the call of a nation reaching deep into the hearts and minds of its people. Inspiring pride, courage and conviction in all those who hear these powerful Scottish songs.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even think about it.......2005-02-10

I just got this CD and I have to say it is the worst thing I have ever heard. It starts with a horrible version of Dougie MacLean's Caledonia and then goes downhill from there. Every song is over-done, over-produced, and over not soon enough. It's like they're all trying to be a 1980's supergroup or heavy metal wannabe. I can't say for sure, but it sounds to me like many of the bagpipes are synthesized, not the real thing. The sound levels are uneven with very poor quality. I'd rate this a zero if it went that low. I would consider giving this away, but I wouldn't inflict this on anyone. There's a reason audio samples are not available for this.

    5 out of 5 stars A powerful album, indeed!.......2004-02-03

As I listen to this album over and over again, each track grows on me and adds to my pride in being of Scottish heritage. "Caledonia," "Hector the Hero," "Slangeva" ("Cheers" in Gaelic), "Always Argyll" (even though I am a MacDonald of Glencoe descendant), "Highland Cathedral," "The Flower of Scotland," "Will Ye No Come Back Again" and "When the Pipers Play" are particular favorites but there is not a weak track in the album"s 17 selections. I am ordering additional copies as gifts for relatives. If you are a Scot, or simply love inspiring music, you will, too!

    5 out of 5 stars A Powerful & Stirring Album.......2003-06-20

I was lucky enough to be at Hampden Stadium for the final of the NFL European Championship. Despite the final being between two German sides, the crowd were suitably entertained by some great Scottish music. Fish, ex of Marillion, sang the Frankie Miller classic Caledonia, which went down very well. Immediately afterwards the Scottish Claymores' cheerleaders came on to a piece of music that just made your hair stand on end. They danced to the track called The GAEL which is featured on this album. It is quite simply the best and most powerful piece of Pipe Band music you'll ever hear. Play it loud, play it proud. A wonderful tune, performed brilliantly by the massed bands of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Great Stuff!

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!-It's Les!!.......2002-04-15

The CD is wonderful! Les even puts a new spin on some of the older BCR numbers! This is the Cd that has the same tracks as his solo CD Love Letters. Highly recommend for any fan or anyone that enjoyed the Bay City Rollers' music in the 70's

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD ADDITION FOR ALL ROLLER FANS.......2001-04-19

EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL ROLLERS THAT I REMEMBER FROM MY TEENS, IT WAS STILL A GREAT CD. TO HEAR FROM LES MCKEOWN AFTER ALL THIS TIME WAS WONDERFUL !!! THE NEW SONGS WERE REALLY GOOD AND I ENJOYED THE WHOLE CD, BUT TO HEAR HIS REMAKES OF THE OLD BCR'S TUNES WAS GREAT. EVERY ROLLER FAN NEEDS THIS TO COMPLETE THEIR COLLECTION.

3 out of 5 stars A Definite "Must Add" to Every Roller Fan Collection.......2001-02-23

Not the original line-up but rather Les McKeown's (original lead singer) retooling of Rollers classics along with some of McKeown's solo tunes. This album features adds a slighty edgier rock sound to classics such as Saturday Night, Rock 'n Roll Love Letter and others with less-than-polished mixing and engineering. This collection also serves as a excellent reminder of how really done the original material was done. All things considered, a "must add" to every Roller fans collection.

3 out of 5 stars What Ever They Play It's GREAT!.......2000-01-05

I was very excited to hear the Rollers are back together,it's about time.I've waited a long time for them to make a come back.I've been a fan since they first came to the U.S.A.and I never gave up on them even tho eveyone else I knew did.I knew if I waited long enough they'd come back.I can't wait to hear their new music. So in the words of a true Roller fan,"Keep On Rolling",and wishes do come true. p.s. Woody your the BEST! I hope you sing lead more often, you've got a great voice! A Roller Fan Forever! J.R.
