4 out of 5 stars "Looking Back"- "Sleeper Catcher/Time Exposure".......2002-07-08

If you want to listen to some music with a real "thowback in time" feel, you might want to buy Little River Band's "Sleeper Catcher/Time Exposure" 2 disc CD. When "Sleeper Catcher" came out in l978, Little River Band was swimming more heavily into "soft rock" waters and slowly abondoning their "Crosby, Stills, and Nash" flavor. "Sleeper Catcher" is a very pleasant sounding album with a blend of quality songwriting from group leaders Graham Goble, Glenn Shorrock, and Beeb Birtles. "Time Exposure" was released a few years later in l981 with, essentially, the same band and producer (John Boylan), but with a different musical flavor directed toward "pop" as opposed to "soft rock". "Time Exposure" contains some of LRB's most commerical hits, such as "Take It Easy On Me", "Man on Your Mind", and "The Night Owls". "Time Exposure" was the band's commerical peak with key members slowly disbanding on the albums thereafter. All in all, this 2 disc album is a smart buy for pleasant '70's music with quality songwriting.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a different sound.......2007-07-07

I'll admit, I admire the folk music, but I can't say that I'm the biggest fan. I listen to more of the general rock music, ranging from the classics to the more aggressive modern metal/screamo combinations. But THIS, this is practically a class in itself. The mixing of folk and metal sounded very bizarre when I heard of the concept, but when I actually heard the music, I quickly became a fan.

Just the imagination and originality of it is phenonmenal. Not only that, there has to be a lot of talent required, considering that the artists need to be skilled not only with the folk instruments, but also with the modern ones as well.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.........2006-11-21

Spirit, the debut full lenght from Eluveitie, can be hard to describe. The album, in my opinion, suffers few, if any, flaws. The flutes, the whistles, the pipes, the accordions, the hurdygurdies, the whatever-other-obscure-folk-instruments are all perfect. Good folk metal is something hard to truely achieve (most of the good ones are mainly viking/scandiavian metal bands, i.e. Odinir, Korpiklaani, Finntroll even). But enough for Scandinavian Folk...we needed some good celtic metal. I'm sorry, but Cruachan and Skyclad (and many others) have all failed to make an amazing celtic folk metal album, one of the standards of Spirit. This album manages to be original and complex in a genre of music (I mean metal here, not just folk metal) that leaves little room for something different. A mind blowing work and a must have. Spirit is one of the best metal albums, ever.

5 out of 5 stars Resurrecting the sounds of rituals and celebration.......2006-08-06

Spirit is an intense musical alliance of the old and new. Eluveitie started as a project to reconstruct a helvetian(continental) celtic dialect. Resurrecting the sounds of rituals and celebration to bind up in union with the violent intensity of metal, Eluveitie has emerged as the champion of the field!

With enough instruments to make the Chieftains envy, this album is the standard for originality. The instruments are well balanced, the guitars don't claim any superiority but leave enough room for your ears to capture the sounds of flutes, pipes, horn, whistles, fiddles, mandola, hurdygurdy, gaita, and accordian.

Six of the eleven songs are sung in english.
The list is as follows:
-Spirit
-Uis Elveti (This track was on Ven)
-Your Gaulish War
-Of Fire, Wind, and Wisdom
-Aidu
-The Song of Life
-Tegernako
-Siraxta
-The Dance of Victory
-The Endless Knot
-An Dro (instrumental)

This is the second album from Eluveitie, the first was Ven.
I personally like the album Ven over Spirit but I know most would disagree with me. I know all who have heard Eluveitie would agree with me that you should buy these albums while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Mindblowing pagan metal..........2006-06-22

This is quite some mindblowing stuff concidering that 'Spirit' is actually Eluveitie's debut album... The quality of their EP of 2004 was OK, the songs were good, and now with 'Spirit' they are perfected... Violins, accordions, fluits, whistles, bagpipes (or whatever) give their very recognizable and distinct sound to the rough metal Eluveitie makes... Eluveitie means 'I am an Helvetian', a continental Celt... Some songs are sung in Celtic, others in English... All are about Celtic culture and wars...
I love Chrigels voice! His clean vocals and his screams are both awesome...
You've got to hear this band playing live! It's a party every time I see them...

This is one great band and this is definately one of the best releases I know of...

Original score material by composer Paul Haslinger (Tangerine Dream) is also included in the line-up. This original series is about a Muslim ex-con who's just been released from prison and finds his way to an Islamic extremist who recruits him to join a terrorist sleeper cell planning an attack in LA. The recent LA premiere set huge expectations following the likes of trend-setting series such as "24" and "Queer As Folk".

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!.......2007-05-27

Like the other reviewers say, this cd does not contain the theme song. What's the point of making a cd about a show and not have the theme song. There are probably only two songs worth anything on this cd. Don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the theme music.....blown away?.......2007-05-09

I bought this for the theme music and it's not there. I feel a bit ripped off. Can anyone tell me why?

Track 1 though would have been a good replacement the original theme.

2 out of 5 stars Confused........2007-04-15

While not quite all they could be (that would come with The It Girl), Sleeper pushed themselves straight into the front ranks of Britpop with Smart, mostly due to the infectious "Inbetweener," (a hit in England) and the sexually charged presence of singer Louise Wener. Even if the rest of the band was essentially faceless, Louise had enough charisma to carry them along and power the songs, the majority of which were actually pretty good, with "Pyrotechnician," "Swallow," and "Bedhead" standing out from the pack. A one-woman show? Time would tell. For now, though, Sleeper seemed like an early riser. Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The next Blondie?.......2000-06-13

Though in retrospect they might not have lived up to that label as well as Echobelly did, Sleeper's debut still has a ton to love.

Though most attention will go to Louise Werner, who's sexy voice and sassy attitude carry a lot of the songs here, the backing music carry it even further, proving Sleeper is more than just an interesting and controversial frontwoman.

Fans who miss 80's new wave pop will need to have this.

3 out of 5 stars To be young again.......2000-03-29

This came out in 1995, the year of Britpop, and was the most representative of the trend for female-led guitar bands featuring charismatic frontwomen and anonymous musicians (the NME dubbed them 'Sleeperblokes'). Oddly, they reminded nobody of Transvision Vamp at the time, but then again this was a period in which Menswear were almost taken seriously.

The band were led by Louise Wener, famously 'the most elegible Jewish woman' according to some magazine or other, and she had a big enough bag of controversial quotes (none of which I can remember) to be interviewed cosntantly by the music press. They survived for three albums in this way before splitting up (i.e. Louise sacked the band) due to Wener's shocking jaw-wobbling in the video for 'Romeo Me', three years later.

As for the music? Fairly good, spiky guitar-led pop that, although painfully 1995, is still very catchy and fun.

5 out of 5 stars First time all the tracks are excellent!.......1998-12-29

This is the first time I've had a cd, where all the tracks are great. I strongly recommend this cd to most anyone. It has a fun, frisky sound and the beats are truly catchy. Get it. It's great!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this is amazing.......2007-01-22

Cool Hand Luke really hit it big with me on this album. Beautiful vocals, lyrics and music in a style all their own to back it up with is what you'll find when you listen to Cool Hand Luke. Now let this be a warning to some, the reviewer below me didn't like this album so I'm assuming he was looking for something heavier....CHL IS VERY MELLOW MUSIC. If you want heavy with good lyrics, move along to Dizmas or The Myriad.

3 out of 5 stars creative.......2005-04-15

i bought this cd originally because i went on their website a long time ago and they had a bunch of samples i liked. their choruses are musically and emotionally powerful.

however, upon listening to the cd you kind of get the feeling that they write an awesome chorus, then feel obligated to fill it up with some verses. the pace of the cd is kinda slow but i like it. also, their guitar melodies interlock beautifully and very creatively.

overall i personally enjoy this cd but for recommendation's sake, i don't think a lot of people would enjoy the pacing or the content as much as i.

2 out of 5 stars The hype.......2004-12-29

I heard all the hype behind this cd and when I finally heard it I found it to be very "boring". Nothing really stands out too much here. If you are a fan of the band in general and have heard them play you might really be a fan of this band but in general they sound like alot of other bands out there. Nothing to write home about.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best out there!!!.......2004-05-30

After I saw them at Ichthus music festival last year I was instantly sold out to Cool Hand Luke's music. I saw an intensity like no other in Contemporary Christian music and a sincerity that I had not seen out of musicians in a long time. Their concerts are hard to describe because they aren't concerts that you can bob your head to but you just stand there and you become amazed by God's presence at the concert. The cd is the same way. "Wake up o sleeper" is a very mellow cd and one of my favorites. I love hardcore music but then I have fallen in love with Cool Hand Luke because of Mark's voice. I just love how Mark wears his emotions on his sleeve and I don't think the music being played is anything spectacular but the band knows it is for the glory of God. Their lyrics are very blatant Christian and I have no problem with that because that just shows that the members of Cool Hand Luke aren't afraid to show their faith. From the get go of "Heroes will be Heroes" which I believe is talking about Peter till the last song on the cd Cool Hand Luke is intense in their own way and beautiful at the same time. Their songs have moved me to tears and when you buy this cd you will know why tears flow from my eyes whenever I listen to this cd. This band is very hard to categorize but I would classify them in the same category that Coldplay is classified as. Go support these guys because they are spectacular and true God-fearing men. God bless.

5 out of 5 stars To call this "Christian" music is insulting.......2004-04-10

Musically and philosophically CHL have managed rise above one of the evangelical christian church's most embarressing endeavors,Contemporary Christian Music. A genre imfamous for a tepid ethos, lyrics that do little more than spout cliches and enforce the evangelical theology, and musical compositions that are "safe" and "positive", unlike those godless heathen bands.

As a group of Christians, Cool Hand Luke have managed to avoid many of these misfortunate errors. Relatively speaking, their compositions are complex, which lean towards a build up of tension and a cathartic release. Lyrics usually follow the standard bridge and chorus, but many of their verses contain layers of vivid imagery, which provides a colorful backdrop to their message. Speaking of their message, they are a bit preachy for my own taste when it comes to expressing their faith; but, their lyricism does provide a socially conscious, challenging, and articulate perspective on the human experience for what it is, instead of trying to sell a lolly pop candyland version of reality.

If you still need to limit yourself to Christian music, or are interested in hearing a group of christians who attempted to actually create some unique music, give this album a listen.

With alarming regularity, formerly spry English pop bands have turned somber over the past year in their quest for historical significance. Blur, Oasis, and the Charlatans all released albums that not only squashed their once youthful resilience, but left us with nothing more than gangs of stodgy band members in parkas moaning about their sad lives. As if one Bush weren't already enough. Sleeper, meanwhile, always on the losing side of the credibility battle, turned so sour they split before their third album even had a chance to break in America. Just as well that Pleased to Meet You arrives on our shores belatedly. This year's model lacks the urgency and optimism of the group's last outing, The It Girl, instead serving up a steady progression of cumbersome melodies ("She's a Good Girl") and droning choruses ("Motorway Man"). While certain songs benefit from a little well-suited sophistication ("Breathe" and "Nothing Is Changing"), the rest of the material generally withers under the low spark of singer Louise Wener's toneless delivery. However, this album still isn't as tragic as hearing Supergrass go from "Alright" to "Sometimes I Make You Sad." Indeed. --Aidin Virazi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Elegy for a lost era........1999-10-17

Seize the opportunity; this is too good an album to complaisantly watch sink into obscurity. Sleeper's first album was called Smart, and that pretty much sums up their ethic; if you're smart, you don't need a lot of fancy musical ornamentation, zithers and Mellotrons, just a guitar and a breathy voice expressive of worldly disaffection. Pleased to Meet You, in particular, is one of the most satisfying albums I've ever heard because of the way the saucy lead singer with a yawn-inducing frankness about sex -- wouldn't a little frigidity be more original these days? -- suddenly becomes very convincingly philosophical, and yet more tuneful than ever.

I don't know if Sleeper really have disintegrated or not, but I sure hope so. This is the perfect elegy for them, and for the glorious British music scene of the mid-90's ( no I'm not being sarcastic; go listen to your Alanis and leave me alone. )

5 out of 5 stars a Brit-pop masterpiece!.......1999-01-07

As a huge sleeper fan,I anxiously awaited the follow up to their brilliant album "The It Girl."When I read that the new album was a flop and was not even being released in the U.S.,I was determined to buy the record (as Import) and decide for myself. After all ,most rock critics are total losers and love to slag this band for whatever reason. When the record arrived I put it on and within about 5 seconds of the opening track "Please,Please,Please"I knew my faith in the band was well placed.I feel this is the best Sleeper record to date.Fans of bands like Blur and Elastica would probably like this.Standout tracks "Traffic Accident","Rollercoaster"and "Firecracker" are Sleeper at their absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars Their best effort yet!.......1998-10-20

Just when I thought SMART couldn't be beat, THE IT GIRL was released. An indelibly grand album, it posed a threat to Sleeper. Would they snap under the weight? Nope. PLEASED TO MEET YOU not only exceeds both previous albums, it smooshes them into the ground. The sparse keyboard-driven "Motorway Man" resonates long after it's over, "You Got Me" boasts an unbeatable "ooh-ooh-ooh" chorus, "Rollercoaster" has a snappy moog that sounds like it was lifted from a Stereolab record and the closing rave-up "Traffic Accident" ponders on about someone "in a white hall room who's popping prostitutes". Lyrically and musically, PLEASED TO MEET YOU proves that the British Press are idiots for slagging this brilliant band. I hope this record is released in America soon. It's been out in Britain for a year now.

4 out of 5 stars A very good album.......1998-10-10

Contrary to information listed above, Sleeper is indeed together and have not split up. Although there's not a smash like "Statuesque" from 'The It Girl' or "Inbetweener" from 'Smart', it's still a great album. Standouts include "Because of You", "You Got Me", and "Rollercoaster".

    4 out of 5 stars A Classic Of 1970's Pop.......2006-10-23

While LRB broke through in the USA with 1977's country-tinged "Help Is On Its Way", this tremendous album took them a notch deeper. And it's filled with pop gems. "Reminscing" is a bittersweet country ballad, "Lady" is a slow blues ballad that flows beautifully, "Shut Down Turn Off" is a tightly played soft rock number and "Fall From Paradise" is a numbing call to faith. This band would produce two more solid albums before slipping from view in the USA; but they would never again produce as cohesive an album as "Sleeper Catcher". This is a top notch band that never got their due; this is an excellent place to start to get to know them.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST LITTLE RIVER BAND ALBUMS.......2003-09-20

I borrowed this album from the library when I was 15 and loved it since then. Unfortunately, the blank tape I recorded it on wore out and most of their albums were not available on cd anymore for whatever brainwashed and stupid excuse. However, I was lucky and greatful to find this lp in a pawn shop in great condition for only $1. Then, I recorded it onto cassette to preserve the lp. LADY is a good, but not my favorite song, but I love the radio classic REMANINCING and the other songs, especially the guiet acoustic ballad BEEB BIRTLES' LIGHT IF DAY that features DAVID BRIGGS' low volume guitar solo, excellent harmony vocals, electric piano solo, flute solos, and the orchestra. GLENN SHORROCK's SHUT DOWN TURN OFF is a outstanding opening song his lead vocal, the guitar intro, and synthesizer, and RED HEADED WILD FLOWER and SO MANY PATHS keep the album in motion. FALL FROM PARADISE and SANITY'S SIDE are an excellent song featuring the piano, lead vocal by GLENN, lead and bass guitar riffs, and ONE FROM THE ROAD is a excellent closer with the synthesizer solo and the organ in the background. Meanwhile, my only complaint about some of their music is the sound of the fretless bass guitar that is occasionally used. Unfortunately, this is the last album that features the clear blasting bass guitar sound by GEORGE MCARDLE. I will never understand why those nutcase idiots at CAPITOL RECORDS won't rerelease, remastered, and repackage this and their other albums, since they were one of most popular bands of the 1970s that had recorded successful albums.

    5 out of 5 stars A truely awesome album.......2001-09-10

I have listened to this album on an old tape that my parents bought over 20 years ago, I think the album is wonderful!
Soon after the album was released, Reminising climbed the US charts all the way to second; I however believe that several other singles on the album deserved to climb the charts just as high.
I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes nice easy rock/pop music, it's a great piece of history.

    4 out of 5 stars A Classic album........2001-06-28

I like "reminiscing" and "lady" but the superb long track "light of day" has a surreal quality to it.Listen for when the brilliant long bass guitar solo merges with an orchestral instrument(wonderful music!).Possibly the best bass solo of all time, the album is worth buying for that one track.

5 out of 5 stars clearing up confusion.......2006-10-19

I've read some confusion about Walter Carlos being the listed performer on Switched On Bach and Wendy Carlos being the performer on Switched On Bach 2000. Let me clear this up for anyone that might be confused or that won't consider the new 2000 version because of it not being Walter. They are both one in the same. In 1972, Walter Carlos underwent gender reassignment therapy. The last release to be credited to Walter Carlos was By Request (1975). The first release as Wendy was Switched-On Brandenburgs (1979). Carlos's first public appearance after her gender transition was in an interview in the May 1979 issue of Playboy magazine, a decision she would come to regret because of the unwelcome publicity it brought to her personal life. On her official site, her transition is discussed in an essay stating that she values her privacy on the subject.

    1 out of 5 stars Muddy waters..........2003-05-31

I was sorely disappointed in this "updated" recording of Bach. The music supposedly more true to the period is muddy and indistinct. I jumped for joy when the original Switched On Bach was released last year - that is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars In what way inferior?.......2003-05-17

It's not inconceivable to me that someone who has spent a lifetime listening to a broad range of music could prefer Carlos's debut recording of Switched-On Bach to the collection, but from any objective viewpoint it IS indefensible. Not only has Carlos brought to bear a quarter century's booming tech innovation, but also a quarter century's musical experience from a unique vantage point atop the under-examined world of classical electronica.

A well-read friend of mine and musical omnivore was given the recent Wendy Carlos re-interpretation of Clockwork Orange to replace his lost Lp of the original soundtrack. His response was nearly ballistic. The original soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange was a dear old friend that had seen him through many a tough time, and he was intimately acquainted with every edge of every sine wave on it. And he missed those particulars so sorely, it was as though he'd been reacquainted with his high school sweetheart only to find she'd undergone reassignment surgery.

I try to keep this anecdote in mind when I read an unflattering review of S-OB 2000. I play music, and I know it in the way a dentist knows tooth enamel. I am as susceptible to a cherished smile as the next guy, but I do know teeth. Beautiful teeth.

2 out of 5 stars Certainly not much beauty in this Beast !.......2003-05-05

I regret to review this album in a negative manner, since I respect the author as a great musical thinker and revolutionaire in synthesizing sounds (and composing music).
I would probably prefer the S-OB in its time, but the anniversary edition somehow eludes my liking.

I can agree, that Bach's music - which can be, when interpeted poorly, on a verge of kitch (for exmpl. various Airs and Adagios on "Best of Classics" or "Meditative Classics" and similar awful compilations) - is best performed by very skilled musicians that bring something fresh and meaningful to the music.

The plastic acoustic wrapping of S-OB 2000 doesn't help.

Wendy has shown her artistic potential in many other cases, most respectively in excellent Beauty in the Beast.
Why can't she continue to explore in that direction and do things of high artistic value - modern classical compositions - sort of electronic Ligeti or Stravinsky on trip or something like that?
I prefer her composition on S-OB 2000 , since that was produced with electronic instrument in mind, while Bach was thinking about organ, strings and harpsichord/klavier. The original tunings don't replace the natural timbre and microtonal variations that experienced players make conciously or unconciously while playing - we all heard about great violin virtuosos that achieved their original tone or sound by playing some notes a little flat to achieve the effect that Wendy is talking about.

Some of the music on S-OB 2000 doesn't sound TOO different from some keyboard demo with Bach's music to my ears - MIDI toccata or somethnig like that - sorry Wendy.

Wendy used the extraordinary tunings creatively in Beauty in the Beast and achieved masterful musical effect and experience of real creativity and musical magic. I admire her in-depth observation and recreation of elements of different ethnic music and orchestra, which show her great knowledge and real understanding of underlying matrix that constitutes music - she might be genial in that aspect, but I think she shouldn't waste her talent on things like S-OB 2000.

5 out of 5 stars Bach at its Best.......2003-01-16

I love this CD. It was interpreted in such a unique way, it brought back the original flavor of how the music was played on hapsicord (sp?) back in the Baroque period. This interpretation really made the notes came alive. It was most enjoyable and it lifted your spirit as the music plays.
