Editorial Reviews
Arabica, Russell Letson, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, August, 1999
Dakota Dave Hull and Kari Larson obviously like mixing instrumental textures as well as musical traditionstry a cute-as-a-bug "Mr. Sandman" for two ukuleles, sandwiched between the novelty number "Goofus" and the venerable "Rights of Man" for National steel guitars, or a mandolin/uke arrangement of the Irish-American "Three Pony Bit" medley. The original Hull and Larson sound shows up on the hard-swinging archtops of "Windchill"; the guitar and mandolin interplay of Scott Joplins "The Chrysanthemum" and the driving breakdown "Clarks Ride"; and the sweet, melancholy six-string and tenor guitars of "You Dont Know Me." Hulls classic rag "The Second Chance" and Larsons reflective "Halfway There" demonstrate hot solo chops.

5 out of 5 stars Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

4 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Recorded Tenor Voice?.......2005-06-22

Is any recorded, tenor, singing voice as lovely as Kenny Baker's? As a child, I often heard him during the 1930s on the Jack Benny show, but have scarcely thought of him since. Amazon.com offers him on four CDs: BABES IN TOYLAND, LOVE WALKED IN, THE STARLIT HOUR and WEILL FROM BERLIN TO BROADWAY. Over the years, I have heard the recorded voices of many tenors, mostly operatic. Their fine voices were excellently trained, often to a wider range and more difficult music. But note for note, their sound as recorded is not I think as sheerly beautiful as Kenny Baker's. A splendid, unspoiled, unstrained, natural gift, put to disciplined and tasteful use! His enunciation is remarkably clear, and his musical line, perfectly smooth. He makes each song a different story, as in the six pieces here from BABES IN TOYLAND.

My claim is easy to test. This website has CDs with excerpts for listening to the best tenors of the 20th century, including Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Giovanni Martinelli, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Richard Crooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Morton Downey, Mario Lanza, Giuseppe di Stefano, Nicolai Gedda, Jan Peerce, Leopold Simoneau, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Of course, the earlier the career, the greater the damage to the recorded voice from primitive technology. Heard live, who knows which voice was most beautiful? But at least we have what earlier centuries could only imagine: lasting copies of live performances. Listen to Kenny Baker's voice on tracks 2 and 8 of BABES IN TOYLAND, and then compare.

The numbers from THE RED MILL will make you want to hear more. This operetta, also composed by Victor Herbert, was first produced in 1906, three years after BABES IN TOYLAND. "Moonbeams" (well sung by Eileen Farrell) is lovely; "Because You're You" (a duet between Farrell and Felix Knight) is quite simple but surprisingly affecting. The last two are the best: "Every Day Is Ladies' Day with Me," and "In Old New York." They are patter songs, perhaps inspired by, and surely as deft, as the ones that Gilbert and Sullivan were writing two decades earlier. Both are sung by Wilbur Evans, in a rich baritone, with perfect enunciation and marvelous comic flair. Great fun!

The selections on this CD were recorded in 1944 and 1945, then released in 1946 on both 78s and 10" LPs. For this CD, they were remastered from wartime lacquered-glass originals. Baker and Evans emerge in radiant form, surely much closer to live sound than reached our family radio via AM transmission 65 years ago. The orchestral and choral sound is less attractive. Poorly miked?

3 out of 5 stars Very, very truncated........2002-12-09

The scores of Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" and "The Red Mill" are lovely classics, but the incomplete scores represented by this Decca Broadway remastering of its antiquated 78s are not the best reprentation. My advice: wait for the John McGlinn "Babes in Toyland" to be released. As for "The Red Mill", you'd do better to pick up the Ohio Light Opera's double-CD from Albany Records.

3 out of 5 stars incomplete pleasure.......2002-11-09

Two terrible mistakes keep this from 5 stars.. BABES IN TOYLAND is not complete as they are missing the delightful IN THE TOYMAKER'S WORKSHOP. Why? In THE RED MILL they use a butchered take of EVERY DAY IS LADIES DAY WITH ME. Again, why?
John McGlinn will be out with a complete BABES soon - and there is a lot of music in it - so you may want to wait.

4 out of 5 stars Finally available on CD!.......2002-08-01

Decca's 1946 album of selections from Victor Herbert's celebrated musical was a welcome addition to record libraries, covering most of the major songs plus some of the delightful dance music. The album was reissued as a ten-inch Lp in 1949. A later reissue in 1957 dropped 4 songs to fit the score on one side of a twelve-inch Lp backed by six selections from Herbert's THE RED MILL. That pairing is reproduced here but the CD contains the complete BABES IN TOYLAND program! It's nice to have it back too! Nice of Decca to give us this early Christmas present this year. But BABES IN TOYLAND is a score that enchants all year round. How strange that no other complete recording exists.

The six selections form THE RED MILL offer a nice bonus, and the selections are well sung.

4 out of 5 stars It's Beefheart So It's Worth a Listen.......2006-08-05

For the record it IS humanly possible to enjoy Vliet's earlier albums and also like this one. The vitriolic knee-jerk-negative reviews here make me wonder if these are true fans of The Man (they probably hate Mallard too, but that's for another review). With those pipes of his I could listen to Beefheart read the phonebook for at least a few minutes. On the "commercial" scale "Bluejeans & Moonbeams" is less-so than the first singles like "Diddy Wah Diddy," and more-so than the most accessible tunes on "The Spotlight Kid." But calling this album commercial is unfair, because Beefheart at his most commercial is still floating in an orbit somewhere beyond Pluto. Songs like "The Party of Special Things to Do," "Pompadour Swamp" and "Rock 'n' Roll's Evil Doll" are simply great tunes by any standard. It's also interesting to note that this album caught the attention of modern alt groups like White Stripes. Judged on its own merits (and ignoring the haters), a valiant effort by Vliet to expand his audience and an enjoyable listen.

2 out of 5 stars Beefheart sells out!?!?!.......2006-07-06

A lot of Cap fans refer to this as a sell out CD and for the most part I'd have to agree. Beefheart dishes out some tunes that can probably be best described as Miller Lite Bluez see "Same Old Blues Again", "Captain's Holliday", Cheezy Disco Funk Moves on "Rock 'n Roll's Evil Doll", Cracker Soul on "Further Than We've Ever Gone" and a positively wretched title cut that sounds as if it could have been written for Meatloaf. Horrible.

The only reasons any Cap fan should own this is CD is to hear "Party Of Special Things To Do" (which you can already hear on the anthology "The Dust Blows Forward").

5 out of 5 stars It's Interesting .........2005-07-11

To see that people love or absolutely hate This disc ...Don , did not like this ,and he hated "Unconditionally Guaranteed" , which is another one of MY faves , by him ,so it's just a matter of taste really .I have always dug this one ; Pompadour Swamp, J.J Cales' Same Old Blues , Oh YES!! I read somewhere that he picked up a lounge band to back him on this one .. They do a damned good job .. the electric piano stuff is really well played , and some nice guitar work throughout ..This was recorded quite a long time ago , and his voice is in fine form here ..The lounge band sound great ..It's a good un' !!

2 out of 5 stars The Worst Beefheart I have heard.......2004-09-01

The idea of Captain Beefheart selling out is ridiculous, he's the farthest out there ever was. Yet, he appears to be trying exactly that. It's not normal music, because it can't be, but damn if it doesn't TRY to be. Like a circus Clown that wants to be accepted and goes to the singles bar with a new suit and haircut, but can't quite get all the make-up off. Doesn't matter how good, even how GREAT, a clown he may be, you don't fit in with the yuppies. The title track is actually not too bad, once you get used to it. It's just not cosmic like the best of his stuff is. The Captain goes easy listening.

2 out of 5 stars Oops........2004-06-14

This is not a real Beefheart album...it's a record company cash cow that failed. The Magic Band quit and all the music is played by studio hacks. This should be the last Beefheart album that you get.

5 out of 5 stars They don't write music like this anymore.......2006-12-31

Who cares if a soprano is singing songs written for a tenor or Thine Alone was written as a duet? This is a perfectly lovely album, and I've never heard my two favorites--Thine Alone, Toyland--sung more beautifully. The soprano, Virginia Croskery, takes no liberties with the music--sings it lovingly and as it was written. Refreshing in our self-indulgent times when singers seem to think it compulsory to "make a song their own" or whatever it is they think they're doing.

5 out of 5 stars an elegant and sensitive treatment of classic favorites!.......2004-01-13

Totally enchanted with this CD. The soprano supremely gifted and the orchestra - stunning. I highly recommend it for the sensitive music lover!

1 out of 5 stars He deserves better.......2000-02-29

This new Victor Herbert is a disaster. The soloist is bad and destroys Romany Life. Her other songs aren't much better. Most of the vocal music was written with a chorus in mind. No chorus. Over half the vocal selections are mutilated. 2/3rds of Kiss Me Again is gone, about 1/2 of Moonbeams cannot be found, the second verse of A Kiss in the Dark is among the missing, etc. Thine Alone was written as a duet. Molly was written for a tenor. They are sung by a soprano. Herbert wrote so much music beautiful music but onl;y his most famous can be found here. Three or four orchestral selections are all that can be recommended. Until John McGlinn or Richard Bonynge realize that Herbert once existed he is in trouble. Naxos and Brion are not the answer.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to recorded Americana.......2000-01-19

It is a Good Thing that Naxos is starting an American Classics series at their usual budget price and that Victor Herbert is featured on two of them. We have as of this writing the purely instrumental (8.559025) and its sequel (8.559026). The latter features soprano Virginia Croskery and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Keith Brion. Yes, this offers an interesting comparison with the old Beverly Sills offering of much the same material. Ms. Croskery's vocalizing is very good indeed and perhaps more in keeping with the kind of voice for which much of this music was composed; but while Ms. Sills' voice is quite thrilling, it is perhaps a touch too operatic for this lightweight material. On the other hand, the Naxos sound is far beyond what the older set can give us. Of the 16 selections on this CD, 5 are instrumental. Of the vocals, not all were written for the soprano voice ("Toyland" for example); but most were and we have here what you would expect: "Romany Life," "Kiss in the Dark," "Italian Street Song," "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and so on. Some listeners might have some trouble with the singer's very top notes; but at this price and for lack of anything competitive that is still available, this is still a very good purchase. This disc makes a fine companion piece, not only to the other Naxos set, but also to a concert of Herbert and Romberg duets on Newport Classic label titled "Sweethearts."

    5 out of 5 stars What?.......2006-03-10

I disagree with the previous review. The Analogue Productions CD layer of all the Bill Evans releases are excellent. The soundstage on these discs is very deep, and there is a lot of air around the instruments. I use these discs to show off my sound system, and i must say that listening experiences like this are what make spending a lot of money on your audio rig so worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars No need for a hybrid!.......2005-01-10

For audiophile Bill Evans freaks, this SACD is worth the extra money in terms of improvement in sound quality.
It sounds deeper (even "slower," an illusion of course) with less background noise. This is what DSD mastering does, often reducing the noise level less than what is contained in the decades old mastertapes.
While I do understand the merits inherent in hybrid disks for new recording releases, there is absolutely no need for the CD layer, which sounds much inferior to JVC's K-2 coded CD. This can be said to all Analogue Production Jazz Classic SACD/CD hybrid series. Cut the CD layer and the sales price. Those who spend extra bucks to buy those classic disks know more than too well how musically superior those recordings are from CDs and LPs they own for years. You buy SACDs to listen to SACD layer, not CD layer, simple as that. Without the CD layer, this disk would be 5 stars!

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this at all costs.......2004-11-10

Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.

If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.

5 out of 5 stars "A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14

Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!

5 out of 5 stars Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26

Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

One the most wonderful recordings of all time. Most amazing group of wind musicians I've ever heard. Unmatched collection of compositions mostly from the Scott Joplin era. All of the B side is instrumental selections from Joplin's only opera.
