Everybody knows.......2007-04-12
1975's finest. Perhaps one up- or mid-tempo tune short of an all-the-way (explosion, fireworks) masterpiece (that closing track is a touch maudlin), Between The Lines nevertheless blows out Ian's nearest "rivals" (Carole King, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks and, dare I say, Paul Simon) and makes a serious claim for one of the 70's preeminent essential LP artifacts.
The success here, I believe, is that Ian (already a songwriting master by '69) keeps the chords simple enough to let her mesmerizing blasts of lyrical wisdom run their course. And there is sagacity, however embittered, on every track. The arrangements are smart, providing properly discreet shading to Ian's soul-inflected folk (and, occasionally)cabaret musings.
Ian sings a mean, low-key revelation. Even when her lyrical and sonic milieu is the tawdry dancehall ("Bright Lights and Promises"), she never showboats. Ian has the inspired ice of Peggy Lee. "The Come On," a deeply dire meditation on cheap love and low esteem, never lapses into sobbing gymnastics. Ian just delivers the bad news like an X-ray. Perfect every time.
There is a fiber-optic perfection to Ian's poetic observations. Male radio programmers and DJs were compelled by burning telephone lines, not market imperatives, to air "At Seventeen" - a startling runaway hit (prefiguring the later, bolder success of Suzanne Vega's "Luka"). It was simply heavy lasers set to kill. Ian didn't hit the mark, she expunged it.
What an artist.
A great memory!.......2007-01-15
Listening to this CD brings back memories of my "younger" years. It still is as pertinent now in its wording as it was back then...just in a different way. A great rememberance.
Between the Lines.......2007-01-10
One of the best voices God ever created. A mix of rock and easy listening to words and music you can understand. Every line connects with the very core of every human being that listens to her. Janis Ian is a true voice in the music industry.
THE LAST OF THE '70's SONGWRITERS.......2006-02-26
Some of Janis Ian's wordplay could make a bad poet blush. Take this line from her adolescent hell signature song, "At Seventeen", a tune betrayed by this bizarre description of teenage alienation, "Their small town eyes will gape at you, (gaping eyes?), in dull surprise when payment due, succeeds accounts received at seventeen". How's that, a teenage accountant? Or this from, "Tea and Sympathy", "Pass the tea and sympathy, for the good old days are long gone, we'll drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won." Never have I wanted to drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won. But just when you want to file these feminist minded, man-eating compositions under aimless testements, Ian slam bangs the finish with two monumental orchestrated numbers questioning the choice between laying down to the death of a lifetime with your lover, or the freedom artistic pursuit and single-hood can offer, making all her previous meandering diatribes sound meaningful. Here the album stands up and says hello, and the crescendoing climax calls you back for another listen. Some nice touches here and there as well, including a brooding cello solo at the end of, "Water Colors".
Awesome walk back in time........2005-07-13
I owned this album (vinyl) in the 70s and it's as great today as it was then. Was very glad to find it in CD, and can now share this incredible music with my kids. Thanks!

Best of Janis Ian.......2007-05-12
I recently heard Janis on a Saturday Night Live Show from 1976 and I bought this CD and have since purchased a second CD of her's. Her lyrics are profound and this lady can sing! I would recommend this CD to everyone.
Souvenirs.......2007-01-03
The title says it all. This is a great Cd of an Artist and time mostly forgotten.
great but we need more.......2006-10-12
tough to give more stars to this collection when it includes only two songs from her finest album: Between the Lines (two great songs but there are at least another three songs that shouldve been included) bottom line this shouldve been a two disc set, whats there is great though
Brilliant but sometimes controversial folk-rock singer.......2005-08-25
Janis Ian began her recording career with a song (Society's child) about an inter-racial relationship and followed up with an album of protest songs. Those recordings are not included on this compilation covering her later recordings, but they can be found separately.
Between 1974 and 1979, Janis recorded four classic albums (Stars, Between the lines, Aftertones, Night rains) from which most of the tracks here are taken. Those albums featured many of the great songs we remember her for including Jesse (a top ten American hit via a Roberta Flack cover), At seventeen (a top five American hit for Janis), Love is blind (a Japanese number one hit), Will you dance (another big Japanese hit), Fly too high (featured on the soundtrack of Foxes and a minor UK hit) and The other side of the sun (another minor UK hit).
Following those albums, Janis diversified into acting and writing but continued to record great music. When Canada legalized single-sex marriages, Janis seized on the opportunity to marry her lesbian partner there in 2003.
Forget all the controversy and just listen to a brilliant folk-rock singer who never achieved the same level of success as Joan Baez, Judy Collins or Joni Mitchell but who certainly deserves to be considered alongside those outstanding singers. If you enjoy their music, give Janis a listen. This compilation provides a great introduction to her music.
Souvenirs - Best of the "Best ofs".......2005-02-11
This really is an excellent "Greatest Hits" collection! It includes the very best from each album and even "Mechanical Telephone" an excellent song from Janis' quirky "Uncle Wonderful" '80's album. I am so glad Janis included "Will You Dance" and "Love is Blind" in this collection. They were huge chart toppers in Japan. The "Up 'til Now" 17 Greatest hits album had to be tailored twice with alternate cuts to cater to Japanese audiences. The only suggestion I could make to improve this album was to add "Restless Eyes", not instead of, but in addition to "Passion Play" which is also an excellent song from that album! Time constraints probably had something to do with that decision. The pictures of Janis are gorgeous too! Buy this CD and you will probably start building a Janis Ian collection!

Now in her fifth decade of recording, Janis Ian might be expected to slack off a bit--record a collection of covers, for example--but she still maintains the highest standards for herself in writing original and well-crafted songs based on snapshots from the human and political experience. Coming on the heels of 2004's extraordinary Billie's Bones, with its predominant jazz-blues shapings, Folk Is the New Black may seem a bit too much like a throwback, a slighter effort, particularly as the bookending songs, "Danger, Danger" and the title track evoke the classic '60s hootenanny protest forms without adding anything new or evoking much militant ire. But this beautifully conjured and executed album resonates with soul-shivering truth, and even mundane observations often glisten on the page as poetry. As each song spotlights a haunting moment in a lover's life ("All Those Promises"); tells the story of sad, ephemeral presence in this harsh ol' world ("Jackie Skates"); or uses Woody Guthrie-ish wit to illuminate an event in the artist's personal journey ("My Autobiography"), Ian proves time and again how she has continued to stand tall in the pantheon of America's finest singer-songwriters. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Who are the great songwriters in America today? Not the most popular. Not the richest. Simply the greats. Ask any student of the form, and Janis Ian will be counted among them. The writer of Jesse, a song recorded by so many others that few remember Ian wrote it; Stars, possibly the best song ever written about the life of a performer, recorded by artists as diverse as Mel Torme and Cher; and the seminal At Seventeen, a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo female artist had ever garnered) in 1975, which is now reaching its third generation of listeners.
The glowing reviews come as no surprise to Ian's loyal fan base, who give her website a stunning quarter million hits per year - even though she hasn't had a top twenty record here in three decades. Ian has had great success as a co-writer, with cuts by Bette Midler, Kathy Mattea, John Mellencamp and a host of others. But Folk Is the New Black is the first album since 1981's "Restless Eyes" that sees Ian writing 100% of everything.
2006 sees the release of Ian's twentieth major-label album, and to this writer's mind, her logical follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Between the Lines". Titled "Folk Is the New Black", the album takes no prisoners; from the wry self-deprecating humor of its title song ("Folk is the new black/cheaper than crack/and you don't have to cook") to the political ("While politicians lie and cheat to get to higher ground/we follow them like sheep, and salute them as we drown"), to what is possibly the best love-`em-and-leave-`em song written in decades ("All those promises that you made me from the start/were filled with emptiness from the desert of your heart"), "Folk Is the New Black" is a songwriter's tour de force. Never mind that it took decades for her to come full circle; Ian is right back where she started, in the bosom of folk music at its best - older, wiser, her talent honed and sharpened until it cuts so fine, we barely feel the blade slicing through us.

Wonderful product, well packaged, as described and delivered as it should be. What can I say? That is the way it is supposed to work. Great job. Great CD.
Good Album.......2006-07-11
Janis never disappoints. Although this might not be her best effort, it is very pleasing. Her songwriting has always been her strength and this remains true with this record. Longtime fans will not be disappointed.
All of the above.......2006-06-29
Have to agree with all the positive reviews about this one... All Those Promises is my favorite track, and the one that reminds me most of Janis' early work... At Seventeen was the song I always hoped would come on my bike radio in the 9th grade when riding through Hein Park with my girlfriend, Kathy McKinley... it did, it was magic, and I've been a fan ever since. Go on and buy this one... you'll love it.
From the Desert of Your Heart.......2006-06-18
"Folk is the New Black" is another excellent outing from Janis Ian who has consistently put out excellent discs recently like "God & the FBI" & the live "Working Without a Net." Of the 15 tracks here, my two very favorites include the soft and sad "All Those Promises," a classic breakup song with one of Ian's strongest & most moving melodies & an excellent lyric, "And all those promises that you made me from the start were filled with emptiness from the desert of your heart; Every sweet caress was just your second best." The lighthearted shuffle "The Crocodile Song" also makes me hit the repeat button with its tongue-in-cheek tale & Viktor Krauss's upright bass thumping haywire, "They had a son and named him Rocky, of course; He fell for a gal on the police force; She was impressed with his bullet proof vest; so they let the romance run its course." Ian's "The Great Divide" is an excellent song with a political voice, "There's a tide of greed that knows no shame and a tide of money that holds no stain, a tide of men who worship pride & will not be denied." This is one of her best works ever! "Jackie Skates" is a classic folk ballad with Ian's acoustic guitar sounding like a nerve throbbing, completely raw. "Home Is In the Heart" and "Joy" are two other classic Ian gems that warm the soul. "Folk is the New Black" is an excellent set of new music from Janis Ian, not be missed! Bravo!
Forever A Star,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.......2006-05-31
Janis Ian ... Everyone should have add this album to their collection. The writing is awesome, and Janis' voice is as crisp as ever...seeing Janis perform these songs in person many times, each time the songs get richer and more beautiful if that is possible.. Each time it is as if she is performing it for the first time. It is a MUST have. Give it a try and when you buy one, buy an extra one for a friend because they will want one. Also checkout Janis' website www.janisian.com and spread the word. JENNY

Simply the Best.......2003-06-21
This is not only Janis Ian's best album, it is the best album I have ever listened to. I am not really a fan of all her other work but this album breaks the mould for her. The recording is first class. If you listen to this CD, make sure you turn the volume up. It does not really get loud but it begins to give the tracks a "being there" feel. The guitaring (ian's I believe), percussion are superb, Lyrics meaningful, sometimes melancholy, sometimes dark.
This is a classic!
Her very best........2003-04-12
I have been a fan of Janis Ian since the beginning. This album breaks new ground both for her and her genre. Every song is a gem, filled with beautiful, heart-rending poetry & wonderful sounds. It puts everything else she's done to shame. It is also perhaps the best sounding CD (prior to the advent of SACD) that I have ever heard! If you have even the slightest inkling that you might like it, BUY IT!
one of the most beautiful album ever.......2002-10-03

so good from the first song to the last. "some people lives" will make u cry and "breaking silence" is probably one of the most well recorded songs i've ever heard (so if u have a good HI-FI system, it's a pure joy !!!). conclusion : get it !!!

A lost classic for sure........2007-01-23
My brother said it best: "I heard the first song and I never wanted to play music ever again, then I heard the rest of the album and I couldn't imagine doing anything else."
This album is ridiculously well crafted, thoughtful songs and arrangements, a beautiful singin voice, and crystal clear sound quality while still maintaining the warmth of all the best records ever. After hearing it I was upset I had never heard it before then. That's only happened to me a handful of times. If you don't like this, you suck. Straight up. Don't talk to me.
Heartfelt.......2005-03-03
The title/first track, "Stars", is a starkly honest, lyrically beautiful expression of Janis' feeling that she has fallen from the success of her teenage debut. (Some say this album marked the beginning of her comeback.) It is not unusual for artists to write about their experiences as an artist, but rarely is this done in such a direct, literal, self-effacing and poetic way. The quiet, expressive acoustic guitar on this track underscores that this is a deeply personal song. The rest of the album is more upbeat, sometimes heavily orchestrated, moving through folksy and jazzy styles. Page Nine, as optimistic as Stars is sad, looks forward to living with a new love. This is the honest, heartfelt work of a great talent.

Should have been a hit........1999-10-27
The critics hated this, but they also hated "At 17" and "Between the Lines". both #1 records for Ian. She has always used the best musicians available; Steve Gadd & Willie Weeks fill in admirably the spaces left by Richard Davis et al in her earlier work. I know this came on the heels of "Breaking Silence", so everyone expected a moody noir piece - but its refreshing to hear Ian's most commercial material, with choruses you can sing along to, lyrics with insight, the works! Of all her albums, this has to be my favorite, because I can play it tooling around in my car, right next to Back Street Boys and Puff Daddy. If she were male, if she were 19 or 20 years old, this album would have been platinum.
The Critics hated it but I LOVED it.......1999-05-09
This album was panned by the critics but if you are a fan of the "At Seventeen" era Janis Ian, this album is great. Most of the tunes on this album are catchy and remind me of why I liked Janis Ian to begin with. My favorites cuts are "When Angels Cry," "Tenderness" and "Take Me Walking In The Rain." The songs are a little sappy (and yes a little depressing) but isn't that why so many of us liked her in the first place?

Classic Janis Ian.......2004-05-20
This is a gorgeous CD;
Took me back to the '70's and all the soul searching of Janis's early stuff... peaceful moods, deep thoughts - ; Dolly Parton duet just lovely!
Buy it.
Print of Palm on the Pillow.......2004-05-12
"Billie's Bones" continues the creative streak for Janis Ian who is repeatedly hitting artistic heights. Four songs on the set comprise a bit of a travelogue. The most familiar for me is a song I fell in love with on Joan Baez's 1992 CD "Play Me Backwards." Janis writes "Amsterdam" with Buddy Mondlock who recently worked with Art Garfunkel & Maia Sharp on the gorgeous "Everything Waits to Be Noticed" CD. Janis marries a particularly haunting melody with intricate lyrical images, "Just the scent of perfume on the linen, just the print of a palm on the pillow, just the hint of the moon from the window, Amsterdam." "Paris In Your Eyes" boasts a romantically drenched lyric with a soft acoustic melody, "Every time I touched you, I could taste a breath of spring." Another stop on Janis' travelogue is the excellent instrumental "Marching on Glasgow." The last song with a geographic title reference is "My Tennessee Hills" with Dolly Parton's lovely supporting vocal. The most powerful song for me combines a Billie Holiday "Strange Fruit" jazz-blues approach to the death of Matthew Shepard, "What makes a man a man? The cut of a coat, the hint of a tan? It's not who you love, but whether you can, What makes a man a man." On "Save Somebody" Janis' distinctive melody combines with an incredibly poetic lyric, "There's a crack in the heavens & a tear in the sky; it cuts through the shadows living in her eyes." Janis' tribute to Mary Black is quite lovely. If one measured the creative high points of Janis Ian's career, an appropriate metaphor would be the Andes Mountains. This is another exquisite set by one of our master musicians. Bravo!
Make No Bones About It!.......2004-04-16
Okay, I'll admit it. I've been a Janis Ian devotee since I was a teenager identifying with her infamous "At Seventeen." Every time Janis is in town, I make it a point to see her concert. There is not one person in all of the music industry, in any genre, who even compares. Janis has it all. She is the quintessential renaissance talent. Her songwriting gift outshines in every possible genre. Her guitar playing is above and beyond the best in rock, jazz and blues. Her tender vocals express the pain and joy in every lyric line. And with "Billie's Bones," Janis has once again risen to the occasion on every track. As a followup album to her "Live Without A Net" CD (also a must buy), "Billie's Bones" speaks to all ages.
There simply isn't a better songwriter to be found. Janis makes every word count. Every note rings true.
If you think you know Janis Ian, she proves that there's much more to discover. If you've never heard Janis Ian, buy "Billie's Bones" and "Live Without A Net." And then get thee to her next concert for an amazing performance!
I guarantee you that once you've experienced Janis Ian's music, you will be moved by the power of her talents.
Poetry becomes music.......2004-04-09
On my first listen to "Billie's Bones" I wondered, "Where's the punch?" It was a nice enough listen, but I wasn't struck by my usual awe that Janis Ian inspires. So I listened again...this time really listened and I ended the CD thinking that this is the most consistently powerful, creative writing I've heard from her (or anyone) in years. The writing is extraordinary. There are too many perfect lines from too many songs on this album for me to elaborate. Briefly stated: this album should be used as a teaching guide for high school and college students who need to hear written thought reduced to a few exquisite words.
Astonising.......2004-04-06
I don't know how to encourage people to purchase this album. I can only say that it is astonishing.

one very good janis song.......2006-02-16
i'm a big janis fan, i was disappointed overall but the two versions of one song were worth the cost of the cd. "getting over you" is wonderful.
The ultimate child star who managed to make it as an adult.......2001-06-18
As is so often in Hollywood, stars who become famous as children often don't find success when they grow up because audiences would prefer to remember them as the youthful symbols they once were. In music, I guess it's the same story. Some child stars like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder manage to continue to make music as they get older, sometimes even better than what they created in their youth. Janis Ian should also fall into that category. Her song "Society's Child" was a hit song in 1967 when Janis was only 16. While it was a great song in its own right, the fact that it was banned by most radio stations for its interracial subject matter was enough to make Janis a celebrity before she graduated high school. Proving that she wasn't a shot in the dark, Janis continued making music after "Society's Child". But there were times when she couldn't cope with the fame and, at least twice in her career, has turned her back on it all to both live her life and hone her musical skills. She first came back in the mid-'70s with "At Seventeen", proving to be one of the most astonishing comebacks in music history. She again retired in the early '80s, this time staying out of the business for 12 years. She then returned in 1993 with BREAKING SILENCE, an album that dealt with the realization of her latent homosexuality. Once again, Janis Ian was praised like she was the next big thing in music. But perhaps her third go-round in music has been her most satisfying and permanent, for she's probably making some of her best music ever, and she's now in her 40s. 1997's HUNGER was a slight bump in the road to her '90s comeback, but not a devastating one as some have seemed to say. The reviews for this album have been mostly negative, saying it is too long or self-indulgent. In some cases on HUNGER, it's true, but those incidents are rare. Most of the album is of the what-you-hear-is-what-you-get quality, meaning there's hardly any production values and those looking for such may be disappointed with HUNGER. For the more open-minded, the bare-bones approach works in spades. Melancholy songs with titles to match like "Empty", "House Without A Heart", "On The Dark Side Of Town" and the title track could only have worked with a low-concept production like this. Too much sweetening would have made the songs sound too melodramatic at best. While regret may be the most prominent subject on HUNGER, the title emotion is also one that is more than present on here. "Welcome To Acousticville", "Searching For America" and "Honor Them All" all have Janis searching for something, be it freedom of expression ("Welcome"), feeling of belonging ("America") or family pride ("Honor"). The first two are often the reasons why people don't like HUNGER, because they think some of the songs could have been trimmed by a minute or two. But the rambling nature of such songs actually suits them wonderfully, and are reminiscent of the famous epic story-songs that Bob Dylan virtually invented. Not many people can create great music after over 30 years in the business, but Janis Ian has proven to be one of the few people that can. Maybe those sabbaticals she has taken from music before has helped her fine-tune her style into something so timeless, she could record well into her golden years if she wanted to. True, HUNGER may not be one of the best albums of her third time in the music business (the honesty of BREAKING SILENCE is almost irreplacable it seems), but Janis is one of those artists where even her least-inspired music is worth a listen. Her most recent album GOD & THE FBI has received some good reviews lately, so if anyone has recommendations for that one, I'd be glad to get them. In fact, I HUNGER for them.
listen to this album! it's incredible..........2001-05-08
janis just gets better and better with each album. i became a fan with "between the lines" and have never regretted picking up one of her albums. her guitar work is magic! and she is definitely not afraid to voice her political opinion.
janis ian is a wonderful talent. this album is a mature tour de force and i highly recommend it.
fave track: getting over you
I Hunger For More Janis Ian.......2001-04-22
Hunger is an exceptional album. Janis takes hold of you and doesn't let you go till the last chord fades on the last song.I then reach over and hit the play button and take the ride again. Be sure to listen to my favorite track "Welcome To Acousticville". It's just Janis and her acoustic guitar playing live, some of the best blues I've ever heard. This cut is how you would hear Janis in concert, just her and her guitar. That's all she really needs.I highly recomend Hunger. Janis Ian is remembered for "At Seventeen". If you haven't heard anything from her since then, you are missing a lot of great music.
Satisfies the greatest hunger pains.......2000-04-08
Janis Ian's hunger is a stark, sparsely produced and stylish album with plenty of interesting melodic arrangements to satisfy fans and newcomers to her music alike. Many of these tracks seem almost "live in the studio" and instumentally "stripped to the bare bones" such as on the tunes "Empty" and "House Without A Heart." A highly-polished project with rich orchestrations did not seem to be high on the agenda here which adds beautifully to the urgency and immediacy of this work. "Searching for America" is without a doubt the album's centerpiece and masterpiece...a true work of art and genius which fascinates the listener more and more with each play. Ian is certainly "searching" for something here...and on tracks like "Welcome to Acousticville" one feels like he is wandering with her in the desert in search of something to quinch and satisfy a thirst and a great longing. "On the Dark Side of Town", a tale of chronic infidelity and hunger for intimacy, is another track that grows richer with each and every listen. The tracks are musically and lyrically haunting, full of need, desire and a longing to be satisfied. "Getting Over You" is the ubiquitous Ian ballad on the album, poignant and melancholy. Initially, I did not view this album as being as cohesive as her earlier efforts...but subsequent listenings have proved it to be extremely thematic and beautifully consistent and textural in its presentation. A good listen that becomes a great listen as it grows on you.
