Customer Reviews:
The man sho is funky.......2007-07-18
Once in a Lifetime is a great album. I would definitely recommend this for any Marvin Gaye afficionado or even if you are looking for some funk/soul. The original versions of the songs (Disc 2) are pretty good, but aren't as bass driven as the first cd, since Frank Blair and Motown Records changed up the album and the latter half of the 2nd cd are songs from lover man so they are the same, but have different titles and the sound quality isn't as good. Anyways an excellent cd by one of the greatest musicians ever.
Marvin Is The Man!!!.......2007-07-17
How this Lp was a bust in 1981 is a mystery. Probably poorly promoted as a result of MG's own bad-mouthing of everything Motown, this music easily stands next to What's Going On as one of his masterpieces. Hip-O-Select has done an incredible job by releasing all of the various takes and mixes so you can hear what was intended by MG or make up your own version!!! If you are a MG fan this is a MUST OWN!!!
A great album indeed!.......2007-07-17
I'll keep it simple, Marvin Gaye is on of the best artist to have emerged in the modern twentieth century. I am and will always be a fan.
Never thought i would see this.......2007-07-03
This has to be one of my favorite lp's by Marvin and to think it now out in the Love Man Expanded Edition.Disc 2 is the favorite with me because of the different mix of the lp that was done in September of 1980.The released mix was done 2 months later.Heavy Love Affair which is the best song on the lp is a full minute longer and this version is alot looser sounding. The Love Man lp is a joy as most of the songs are reworked in to the song that would later become the In Our Lifetime lp.All n' all this is a must have package for one of the most overlooked lps in Marvins catalog.
Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-29
About time! It is here! I have been waiting for a long time (17 years to be exact) to get my hands on this album! I purchased this set and man! This dude had some good tracks that were going to blow out parties. I love the album versions of Ego Trippin Out! (I always had a lot like diamonds and a yacht, check out this here 450SLC baby!)Funk me is different on the love man album. Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me is slower and has a different rhythm and beat. But the song is jamming!Funk me, Funk me BABY! I was lead to believe that Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me was exactly like the in our lifetime version. (It's not) He says in a verse on Dance N' Be Happy(Cold Blooded lovers, waiting for the night. Exploring my treasures you got me so uptight, your(Janis) the fault that I'm feeling all insane, once we were happy then the devil came ooh baby, ooh baby. First you make believe your mine. Ooh baby, ooh baby then you make me feel like dying. Oooh ooh.
It is cool to hear the alternate versions of the songs from in our lifetime. It allows me to see deeper into his mind at that time. Some of the songs are directed at Janis on this album. He was in pain and he had a hard time letting go. Now these tracks would have made it big in the disco back then. Good music from an untouchable artist! He says in the song A Lover's Plea (if God can forgive me then why can't you? (Janis)). Over all, this is a worth the money set! Beautiful music which has now seen the light of day! Love Man!

In an earlier age, when the likes of Public Enemy and Gang Starr ruled the roost, Jay-Z would have garnered the same kind of serious attention and respect as, say, the Fresh Prince. But in the devalued hip-hop universe of the late 1990s--where political activism is irrelevant, and entrepreneurial mediocrities like Puff Daddy and Master P hold sway--it's tempting to hail him as a conquering hero. Tempting, but mistaken. For one thing, he lacks the pipes to be considered among the truly great MCs (Chuck D, Guru, Ice Cube, Method Man). For another, his rhymes--both structurally and in terms of subject-matter--are way too simplistic. Rather than draw any conclusions from his world, or postulate any form of action, Jay simply calls 'em like he sees 'em--a post-Biggie dialectic of thinly-veiled threats ("Friend or Foe '98", "Face Off") and dreary self-aggrandisment ("I Know What Girls Like", "City Is Mine"). Hang on, didn't this used to be known as whack? --Andrew McGuire
Customer Reviews:
Underrated!!!.......2007-03-24
This is Jay-z's must underreated album! Everyone was not feeling this album, but the were just not understanding the content! Besides two dumb tracks (One featuring Puff Daddy, the artist killer), the rest of the songs are pretty solid when it comes to lyrics. You have to remeber that at the time he recording, Biggie just died and that took a toll. Also, He was preparing to retire after this album and have Memphis Bleek become the star of Rocafella. Basically, this album is one of his best!!!!
A life time of work.......2006-12-05
Out of all the albums that Jay has put out this is believed to be the weakest of them all. At first I belived so myself, however; after close listening I realized that this album is one of the most intimate albums Jay has ever done till now. Tracks like "You must love Me," and others shows Jay's ability to tell stories, and show his battle within. However, some of the tracks leave me hanging. Because Jay is and Nas, Tupac, and Biggie are the few Rappers I hate to hear other people on songs with them. These could and can carry albums by themselves. This for me is the only flaw in this album.
See It For What It Is.......2006-10-12
In My Lifetime vol.1 is one of Jay z's most underrated albums and it's rightful place is next to Reasonable Doubt where it belongs. If you ask me the last few albums Jay Z gets most of his love from a nice chunk fans and critics because he is a master at creating great hooks and picking major production that will sell records. On his first two releases Reasonable Doubt and this one he is a major lyricist and this is what he doesn't get recognized for in this album. Truthfully lyrically it's between this and his first album that are the best. Now the production in My Lifetime is up and down, he has a sick intro and then the city is mine plays and it's a bit off. Though I think this is one of his least commercial albums Sunshine featuring Babyface says something totally different. The best thing about this album is that Jay actually speaks on his life and times and he does it perfectly, only thing holding it back is the few crappy beats.
He's getting better.......2006-10-10
I know, I know, I know. Jay-Z's Resonable Doubt is Jay's greatest album (so some think). But In my life time vol 1 is just as strong lyrically..Although it may have "pop" hits as Sunshine, this demonstrates his ability to not just do street stuff, but also his ablity to songwrite. This album begins his maturation as a great songwriter..there are a lot of great emcees, but they are not always good song writers (ei eminem). This album is just a continuation from Reasonable Doubt. (Just as RD is a continuation of the original "In My Lifetime"). The top songs on here are; A million, Imaginary Players, Sunshine, Friend or Foe 98, Who You Wit, Real Niggas, Where I'm From, You Must Love Me. Any Jay-Z Fan should have this. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is because of suspect production.
Not that bad, better than Blueprint 2- Gift & Curse.......2006-09-18
Many people view this as either his worst album or next to worse, mainly because it doesn't live up to Reasonable Doubt and many view this as when he sold out to commercial rap. However I think this album is probably better all of his latter albums except for the Blueprint & Black Album. It may not even be as commercial as Hard Knock Life. The album is pretty good and I know this might be blasphemous but I like the Bad boy produced tracks like Sunshine and I Know What Girls Like. They are unique, plus Jay-Z has always turned corny, odd beats into pure gold( Hard Knock Life??/ Annie anyone??) I just think Jay was trying to show that he had taken Biggie's place by hooking up with Bad Boy. Overall this album is probably in Jay-Z's top five albums.
1. Intro/ Million and One/ Rhyme no More 7/10
2. City is Mine 8/10
3. I Know What Girls Like 7/10 ( Corny but catchy)
4. Imaginary Players 9/10
5. Streets is Watching 8/10
6. Friend or Foe '98 9/10
7. Lucky Me 9/10
8. Sunshine 8/10
9. Who You Wit II 7/10
10. Face Off 8/10
11. Real Niggaz 7/10
12. Rap Game/ Crack Game 9/10
13. Where I'm From 8/10
14. You Must Love Me 9/10

Stop the World I Want to Get Off, Broadway cast.......2005-09-04
If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.

a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27
STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.
Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.
Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.
A top cast album.
Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13
This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".
NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.
YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.
THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.
Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25
To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

The three-CD box set In My Lifetime marks the first time songs from all phases (and all labels) of Neil Diamond's career have been gathered in one place. The 71 tracks include 5 unreleased songwriting demos from 1958-64, 3 flop singles from 1960-63 on Duel and Columbia, 11 of the Bang sides, 14 Uni cuts, 25 samples from the Columbia years, his contribution to "The Last Waltz," 11 unreleased outtakes, 1 new song, and a live version of the first song he ever wrote. It's all arranged chronologically to tell the story of his career from aspiring Brill Building songwriter to less interesting adult-contemporary superstar. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Diamond box set has lots of gems for little money........2007-06-28
Well, I finally got old enough to let myself buy and listen to whatever I want whether or not it's considered "cool". I rememberd I always enjoyed the earlier Neil Diamond classics when I heard them on the radio years ago, and then I wondered why I never actually bought any of his music.
Some may think that this guy is corny, but let's face it, he's got a great voice and he wrote some classics, and the arrangements are often excellent too, so why not load up on Neil Diamond at this price? Anyway, I looked at all the options, the greatest hits CDs and various compilations, and I settled on this one.
I must say it's great to hear these old classics without the DJ talk over the beginning and the end, and on a high quality sound system. It's also great to hear some of his not so well knows stuff thrown in there too. It's plenty listenable, but I won't get sick of it quite as much as if it was just the "favorites" one after another. Great stuff!
Good compilation, but one big mistake..........2007-01-27
..Neil Diamond obnoxiously assumed we would be entertained/intrigued/touched by letting his little kids be present on a few songs. It killed the CD set for me. I have copied the best songs and sold it already. Very disappointing. Otherwise he was great and his songs bring back alot of memories from the '70s.
A great album.......2006-08-13
I got this as a gift for my husband. It was just the right thing for a Neil Diamond fan. We enjoyed listening to his songs through the years, recalling our own past as we listened. Some of the songs would probably not have been heard except on this album and that made it even better.
Not just another compilation.......2005-07-17
I love this set and have fallen in love with Neil Diamond all over again. It has all the favorites but the best part for me was hearing a lot of music that was previously unissued. It was really neat to hear some of his early demos, and there are a lot of undiscovered treasures on all the discs, 16 unreleased tracks in all. I like also that this set was a personal collaboration with Neil Diamond and not just the usual compilation that someone put together. He spent a lot of time listening again to his early work and choosing music for this project, and there is a nice booklet that comes with the CD that gives his comments track by track. He also shares some personal thoughts about his career and there are lots of pictures throughout his lifetime.
You really can't go wrong with this one. It is the best of the best.
Neil Diamond Gets the Royal Box-Treatment He Deserves.......2004-09-13
I can't say that I'm a huge Neil Diamond fan (I don't have a single album of his, in fact). But when I recently heard "Cracklin' Rose" and "Sweet Caroline" back-to-back on the radio, I realized the man has some truly great songs, which eventually lead me to this collection.
"In My Lifetime" (71 tracks, 227 min.) is thankfully organized chronolgically, so that one can follow and understand the musical evolution of Neil Diamond. Not surprisingly CD1 is the most interesting of the collection, with the early demos and songs, near-hits and finally, hits. Be aware, 20 of the 27 tracks on CD1 are in mono. If CD1 is the most interesting, then CD2 is the "greatest hits" of the greatest hits. Blockbuster song after blockbuster song rolls along. Fascinating is "Dry Your Eyes", Neil's contribution to "The Last Waltz" farewell concert of the Band. You didn't know that Neil was part of that show? Me neither. Included also is a 5 song suite from the "Jonathan Livingstone Seagul" concept album, wich I owned and loved in the good ol' vinyl days. CD3 starts with the hits from "The Jazz Singer" remake (America, Love on the Rocks, Hello Again), and coast along following the lines of "Heartlight", which is admittedly not my favorite Diamond stuff.
If there is one surprise in this collection, it's that there is nothing in here from either the original and very successful "Hot August Night" live album, which I believe is Neil's biggest selling album ever, or any other of his live albums such as Live at the Greek and HAN 2. That aside, this collection gives the proper due to a truly gifted singer-songwriter.

Why would I write a review about a compilation CD that I could create myself within an hour from all of the past CDs I've bought from this once great group? All good things must come to an end, and this, yet another, stab at your wallet proves that the party's over. It's been nearly 10 years since the release of the wonderful, aptly named "Landmarks" CD, so it's time to move on to other Celtic bands that have left Clannad in the proverbial dust. Save your money folks, because if you're a true OLD fan...you've heard it all before.
A must for the well rounded music collection.......2005-02-23
This is the only Clannad cd I own, but about 4 hours after chewing open the shrinkwrap and on my 4th listening of the entire cd (it arrived today in the mail), I wonder why I waited so long to find this. I had a rough day at work and listening to this cd was like sitting under a cool waterfall on a hot day (cold beer optional)
Well...........2004-06-21
...I do agree with some previous reviews: Clannad have been releasing hundreds of "best of" compilation and that's probably enough tiring!! Stop it!
BUT....this best of worths buying it cause, to me a Clannad fan since such a long time ago, it is the best ever done. So, for those approaching Clannad for the first time it s one of the best album: furhter to that there exists a Double-set with a superb chill out Cd included!
For thoise who already know Clannad...well....hope a new album will be released! We have enough of Greatest Hits Cd and such....
what a waste.......2004-04-10
This album bites. The brief interludes of prostituted classical music are the only redeeming qualities. What is with the irritating children's vocals?

INTERESTING SHOW.......2007-01-24
If you saw this show it is a must for your collection
In my own lifetime.......2002-03-31
This has to be one of my all time favorite cast recordings. Although as a Broadway musical it didnt have nearly the success of Fiddler it is non the less an excellent recording, and it did win at least TWO Tonys.(I understand the one that Hal Linden won was one of the reasons that he got the job in "Barney Miller".
Of course the best number on the recording is "In my own lifetime",and "Sons" is just slightly chauvinistic but....
Hal Linden is of course magical, Keene Curtis does how many roles and Paul Hecht as the oldest son steals the show in his number with Jill Clayburgh. I do know of one piece of music that was cut from the show that I would love to get my hands on,called "Its just a map". Well worth a listen!
Tevye had rich relatives!.......2002-02-22
Bock and Harnick may not have reached the heights they did in Fiddler but they have produced a forgotten treasure. The album is better than the show. The songs and emotions are clearer and more effective when you don't have to bother with the labored book which is heavy on European politics and 18th century bond trading. Hal Linden is in fine voice and surprisingly we even get to hear a young Jill Clayburgh vocalize.
oh the misery of it al!.......2002-02-07
quiktime has sequestered the resources to hear your samples, and of course, it won't play them.
try arguing with it..
maybe you could provide us chickuns with alternate media players?? uh, how about it?
A muscular, vibrant score with many musical shadings.......1999-08-25
This is the most "through-composed" of the musicals of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, as befits the 18th/19th century European setting. Hal Linden's Tony Award-winning performance comes through loud and clear as the partriarch of the family, as does fellow Tony-winner Keene Curtis in a variety of roles. "Sons," "Rothschild and Sons," "Pleasure and Privilege" are standouts. A neglected gem of the musical theater.

The Talking Heads should have been the least commercial of the storied first-generation New York punk/new wave bands. After all, they didn't have the impact of the Ramones, they didn't possess the virtuosity of Television, and they weren't as accessible as Blondie. Or so it seemed. In truth, they turned out to have had enough of all those qualities to surpass their peers commercially over time. And while the group's impact waned in the years after their breakup, this splendidly packaged (albeit cumbersome) box reestablishes them as one of the great pop-art bands in rock history. That was their gift--the ability to mix pronounced artistic ambitions (three of the four members attended art school) with a sneaky pop perspective. They understood how the avant-garde fit with insistent rhythms and melodies, and in David Byrne they possessed a frontman who was undeniably quirky yet surprisingly embraceable. Unlike most of his punk peers, he was uncomfortable rather than repulsed with the way things were. Once in a Lifetime supercedes 1992's two-disc Sand in the Vaseline as the essential Heads overview, serving up three discs of music (including a smattering of rarities) and a fourth disc of videos that hold up remarkably well. --Steven Stolder
Album Description
Formed in the mid-'70s by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouthand ex-Modern Lover Jerry HarrisonTalking Heads exploded out of CBGB's punk breeding ground to become one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhythmic spin on rock fused elements including funk, African beats, Brazilian sway, avant-garde minimalism, pop savvy, and punk's DIY aesthetic into a pioneering sound that was at once experimental and accessible . . . wholly inventive yet immediately welcoming. From 1977's self-titled debut to 1988's Naked , their work both unceasingly pushed the envelope and delivered massive Top 10 hits like "Burning Down The House." Without question, these Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers will forever remain one of music's true originals. The first-ever Talking Heads box! Covers 1976-1992, including almost four hours of career-spanning, groundbreaking music. Remastered for startling sound! Over 50 tracks on three loaded CDs, including all their biggest hits, plus a selection of five previously unreleased rarities, outtakes, and alternate versions. Packaged with the out-of-print video compilation Storytelling Giant, now on DVD for the first timeand newly expanded with three previously unreleased bonus clips! Set is packaged in an artistic and uniquely designed horizontal layout, including commentary from notables including: renowned music journalist David Fricke; cultural studies guru Dick Hebdige, author of Subculture: The Meaning Of Style; revered Japanese editor and scribe Kyoichi Tsuzuki; author Ricky Moody; and women of letters Maggie Estep and Mary Gaitskill.

so sad.......2006-07-20
I'd already owned all the albums, including Sand in the Vaseline. I still listen to my vinyl copy of The Name of this Band is Talking Heads. What more could I get out of this?
It was a neat box (at first - it's a drag to store) and I wanted the DVD (obviously!). But being extremely familiar with the original mixes of these songs, there are very, very few changes in these remixes that actually improve anything. It's like George Lucas with his obsessions - LEAVE A GOOD THING ALONE. Way too many Naked/Rei Momo flourishes superimposed here. And I like Naked and Rei Momo.
What a joy.......2006-01-23
This is a great compilation of Talking Heads material. The artwork and book are very attractive and the release of the warner video compilation on DVD makes this set excellent!
If you get the oppertunity to own it, and love and miss the Talking Heads like I do, you wont regret it!
Essential Talking Heads.......2005-11-22
3 discs of music and with videos spanning the career of one of my favorite bands ever. This features selections from all of their albums, concentrating on the first four records. It also featues a few live and alternate tracks. I obtained this when it was released in late 2003 to upgrade from 1992's Sand in the Vaseline 2 CD set, but superfans currently should consider the recently released Brick boxed set. My only complaint lies with the highly disturbing artwork and awkward packaging.
Some of the worst packaging ever.......2005-07-29
I've always been a casual fan of the Talking Heads. I liked their music, but only had a few of their CD's, so I decided to treat myself to this set which I thought would be comprehensive. Well, upon receiving this mess of a "box set" I was so taken aback that it took me a while to get to the music.
The "box" is actually a rectangular book with fairly bizarre and unappealing art. (Nudes that represent... what?) The book itself, because of its shape, does not lend itself to easy reading, and while the contents are of a decent quality, some artist appreciations by the likes of Rick Moody and commentary by the band members, some intersting curios, like notes and original lyric sheets, and a discography, trying to read this while hoping the binding holds up while the pages flop all over the place is quite a feat.
The music itself is a decent overview of the band's work. The three CD's have a nice cross section of the band's work, but for the cost and the annoying packaging, I would have been much better off with SAND IN THE VASELINE.
perfect boxset.......2004-12-11
Why do I want to bother you with another 5 stars review?
First: the music deserves it. Some shocking and punk, some melodically beautiful. Some avantgarde, some classic. Some insane, some quiet and reassuring. 50 great songs. No one single minor song.
Second: the packaging is deluxe. Not very comfortable to handle, indeed. Great photo shots, great stories (just like their songs' lyrics) told by the very band members or their crew and friends.
Third: despite of some angsty review, the sound is clear and dry. No bombastic at all, believe me.
Forth: the dvd. I often don't like music on tv, but TH videos are really bizarre and impressive and testify the band's (mostly Byrne's) tout-court art expressive talent.
In the end I want to point out perhaps the only thing I truly miss: the lyrics (quite common and usual for a boxset) and/or some notes about the single songs.
I advice to buy this one together with the just re-release of the live "The name of this band is TH", because they both give a double view on a bipolar schizofrenic band: canned and accurated in the studio, free and exciting on stage.
There's no way not to like both.

Album Description
Born 1924 in Vienna, Theodore Bikel was thirteen when he and his parents left Austria for Palestine. Fluent in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German with a respectable command of English and French, he intended to study and eventually teach comparative linguistics. In 1946 Bikel entered London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from which he graduated with honors two years later. It was also at this time that he began to develop a serious interest in the guitar and folk music.
But he was first to make his mark as an actor. Sir Laurence Olivier was so impressed with Bikel's performance in several small London theatre productions that he offered him a roll in his production of A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Vivien Leigh. Bikel soon took over the second male lead, Mitch, in the play.
From Streetcar on, Theodore Bikel's career has been illuminated by superior stage and screen portrayals. In London he won acclaim playing the Russian Colonel in Ustinov's The Love Of Four Colonels and on Broadway his roster of memorable performances includes Tonight in Samarkand, The Rope Dancers, The Lark and the original Broadway production of The Sound Of Music in which he created the role of Baron con Trapp. Nationally he starred in a number of other plays, including tours of Zorba and Fiddler on the Roof. After having played the role of Tevye over 2,000 times since 1967, Bikel's Tevye continues to garner the highest praise from audiences and critics nation-wide whenever he repeats the role.
Theodore Bikel's television career in the United States spans some 35 years. His roles on TV cover an amazing range of characterizations: from a Scottish policeman in Alfred Hitchcock Presents to a Mad Bomber, a South African Boer on the hunt in New York (Equalizer) to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, to Henry Kissinger in The Final Days and the role which earned him his L.A. Emmy award in 1988 for his role on public television as the 82-year old Harris Newmark.
Theodore Bikel has recorded 20 record albums mostly for the Elektra label in addition to a few releases on Columbia, Peter Pan, and Reprise. He is also an accomplished translator of song lyrics.
Theodore Bikel was a co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.
DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good to Me," she has such an upbeat twinkle, you suspect she means every word. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
if you like female jazz vocalists you'll love this album.......2004-07-27
I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.

All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

Top of the line - incredible!.......2007-05-13
If I could give this 100 stars I would do it. Since my trip to Russia in 2006 I "discovered" Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and have since purchased much of his music on CDs and DVDs. All tracks on this particular CD are incredibly beautiful - beyond imagination. Mr. Hvorostovsky was rightfully chosen the "Best Singer of the World" when he was a young man. His lush, full baratone voice is, as the young generation says, "to die for". He has an impressive range, and one can tell he feels music deeply by the nuances in his singing. This CD is one of my favorites of his singing.
Long-awaited follow-up to "Dark Eyes".......2003-01-04
Ever since "Dark Eyes", one of the first albums of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, came out, I've been wishing for the baritone to record more Russian romances. Looks like Delos is more committed to preserving this magnificent voice on record more than Philips did. After all, "Dark Eyes" had a lot of orchestral music, though wonderfully performed by Ossipov orchestra, it effectively reduced the sang material by some about 15 minutes or so. This is certainly not the case here. Well oven an hour of excellent singing is recorded (close-miked) with no interruptions. The songs themselves are the ones most often performed as encored by Russian singers. While baritones or basses have the strongest claim to them, most likely stemming from a long Russian tradidion of low male voice solo, tenors and even mezzo-sopranos have performed some of those to great acclaim.
The absolute hardest thing about performing these songs is not to make them sound sappy, vulgar, or over-done. Of all Russian singers who dealt with this material, I most often think of bass Boris Shtokolov, who sang them with utmost care. Dmitri does just that here. His care for the texts is what strikes me first while listening to "I Met You", a reflective serenade to love long lost. While all songs are spectacularly presented, I would like to mention "Misty Morning" and "I loved you". Like the title song, they are both filled with gentle melancholy, and sang with great tenderness and feeling. Some high-energy items, such as "Troika" seem just a little out of place, but the voice is a sheer pleasure to listen to. In "Oh, Could I in Song Tell My Sorrow", there's a strange change from traditional "your heart would break" to "my heart would break". I am not sure as to why this was done, particularly since the Cyrillic texts are absent.
In liner notes, Hvorostovsky explains the dedication of this album to his father, a chemical engineer, who managed to convey his love for the classical music and Russian romances to his son. I think all fathers need to learn from this man. Wondrous results stem from right upbringing!
The only minor quibble I have is the cover picture. It seems like the producers wanted to target exclusively the female part of the audience by using lots of shades of red color and lots of subdued candlelight. Well, I am sure there are lots of Dmitri's fans among men, particularly those of us who study voice, so I wish Delos would not make the cover so extravagant.
The engineering of this album, though, is very appropriate. The voice is placed well above orchestra (conducted with perfection by Constantine Orbelian) and each word is clearly heard. Together with Verdi Arias recording this shows that Delos engineers are fully capable of capturing the voice of this size and beauty well on record, something I doubted when listening to an otherwise lovely album of Neapolitan Songs.
I am sure non-Russian speakers will enjoy this CD just as much as Russians. After all, we all feel the same, and Dmitri's exceptional talent just makes it easier to communicate across cultural barriers.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL ALBUM FROM DMITRI.......2002-10-11
Once again, Dmitri Hvorostovsky has done another beautiful album. I'm completely thrilled with his last three releases on the Delos lable--the Verdi Album, the Passione di Napoli album and this new Russian love song album. As I have previously indicated on my review of his Passione di Napoli album, I've been a fan of his since his very beginnings in opera, and I do feel that he is truly in his vocal prime.
This album is for the "romantic at heart". The songs are beautiful as is the singing. All I can say of this endeavor is Bravo!!
I'm truly grateful that Hvorostovky's recording career was extended by the Delos lable!!
Dmitri at his best.......2002-10-09
What a treat this CD is. I've been waiting years for the great Hvorostovsky to record another album of Russian folk music, and this is arguably his best collection of that genre to date. Recorded in August, 2001, Hvorostovsky has never sounded better, and the sound quality admirably complements his rich, velvety baritone. Unlike his earlier collection of Neapolitan songs for the same label (DELOS), the recording balance between singer and orchestra will please everyone this time. Furthermore, the CD benefits from stylishly idiomatic arrangements, some fine conducting from Constantine Orbelian, and the sympathetic support of both the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Russian folk music performers, the Style of Five.
The 19 songs on the CD are described as "Old Russian Romances", or in professional music terminology as "Russian Domestic (Household) Romances". These are passionate songs of love, "often against the background of vast, empty Russian landscapes with long roads under foggy, gray skies", as the liner notes tell us. Hvorostovsky's dark, expressive baritone is ideally suited to such music, and Dmitri aficionados will no doubt recognise two songs from his earlier CDs of this genre, the haunting title track and the wistful "O, If Only I Could Express In Sounds". The latter was featured on his best-selling 1991 "Russian Romances" CD for Philips, but here - if anything - his singing is even more poetic than in earlier days. Comparing the two versions, one is immediately aware of how much freer Hvorostovsky's top notes are on the latest CD, with his upper register showing none of the slightly constricted quality that occasionally marred the earlier CD. This is the voice of a mature artist, and it is rare indeed to hear such committed singing from the soul.
As if the above wasn't enough, the CD comes with translations, generous liner notes, and an alluring cover photo of the handsome Siberian.
Hvorostovsky in his Milieu.......2002-08-31
This is Hvorostovsky at his finest. His magnificent rich creamy baritone is not taxed. He makes you sigh at beauty of his high
mezzo-voce notes, held endlessly, and trailing off to nothingness. The songs themselves are lovely-sad ballads of lost love for the most part, with a few catchy little ditties thrown in for a change of pace.
As crossover discs go, this one is one of the best. A fabulous singer at his prime, singing the songs of his childhood memories.
Bravo Hvorostovsky!
