About the Artist
A Billy Jonas performance is an explosion of energy. In singalongs, bangalongs, whisperalongs, as well as improvised songs, his primary instrument is the audience. Everyone becomes part of a performance that reaches out and ". . . touches even the most hardened of hearts." (Fayetteville Morning News) Concerts begin with a simple "tuning" of the audience; from there a whimsical trajectory carries listeners through stories of life, love, and triumph over 'Murphy's Law.' Jonas' original pieces are played on fanciful "industrial re-percussion" instruments made from found objects. He sings in a clear tenor voice; his guitar work is adventurous, alternately percussive and lyrical. Jonas' heartwarming work has been enjoyed across North America since 1987. Previously a member of the highly acclaimed duo, "The Billys," he has been featured at prestigious festivals and venues nationwide (see selected venues). Jonas has shared stages with some of the world's favorite acoustic artists, including Patti Larkin, Ani DiFranco, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Pete Seeger. Jonas' CD, "Life So Far," sparkles with unique perspectives and found sounds. Songs filled with hope, yearning, wonder, and wisdom include special guests David Wilcox, Glen Velez, Robert Moog (on Theramin), and Zimbabwe's Black Umfolosi voice and percussion choir. Jonas also has released a video for younger audiences, entitled "Bangin' and Sangin,'" that has garnered critical acclaim, including a Parents Choice Gold Award, and inclusion on the New York Times "Best" listing.
"Get Real" is Billy's 2004 studio follow-up to "Life So Far". From matters of the heart, to geo-political intrigue, "Get Real" invites the listener to climb into a "percussion-rich" universe full of sonic exploration and emotional adventurousness. "Get Real" is filled with sounds that come from homemade and recycled object instruments ("industrial re-percussion": 5 gallon water bottle, pots & pans, bottles & cans, buckets, garbage bins and carpet tube marimbas), as well as a host of more traditional sounding instruments (guitar, bass, Middle Eastern & African percussions), and LOTS of voices!
Billy Jonas' performances will inspire, inform, and enlighten. His work is born out of respect and reverence, and seeks to honor the creative energy in everyone. Billy provides performances and workshops for adult audiences and/or family audiences. Billy is accompanied by a full ensemble of singers and re-percussionists at larger venues

Sorta on the Edge of Great and Mediocre........2006-06-10
I put the Halo Friendlies on Winamp to see if my memory serves me correctly, and it does: The Halo Friendlies are a talented, hard-rocking group that puts "girl bands" to shame, but their lyrics leave much to be desired.
I remember "Over It" and "Just Like You" being a couple of my favorites for being real catchy and easy to sing along with. The ladies switch lead vocals on songs, which gives the album some diversification, and a little something that makes them stand out from other bands.
My inital reaction to the album was, overall, "Wow! They play like guys!" I even described them to someone saying, "not to be sexist against my own gender, but these girls don't play like girls." If you like real bands like The Donnas, you'll most likely get along with this. The Friendlies are NOT poppy. They are very straight attitude and punky.
The lyrics are weak, often contrived, and a lot of the same subject matter. Not all of it is bad, but a lot of the time you might wish they'd just throw some instrumentals in there.
So, Great Sound + Mediocre Lyrics = So-So Album. If you get it as a gift, might as well keep it. The music is worth it.
Go-Go's + The Donnas + Lillix = Great Girl Rock Band.......2006-05-21
If you're a fan of punk/pop girl singers this is the album for you. Combining voices of Belinda Carlisle and Tasha Ray-Evin, this comes out to anything but girl singers such as Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. When I first heard of the HF's I thought girl songwiters and musicians so listened to the song clips and got the CD. The girls from Long Beach know how to rock. Sell Out and Nice Guys are my favorities. This band will appeal to you if you like Go-Go's, Donnas, Avril Lavigne, The Bangles, Skye Sweetnam and Lillix. Worth the money and a great buy!! :-)
THIS IS FLIPPIN' AWESOME!!!.......2005-12-04
I got this CD after hearing them on the Freaky Friday Soundtrack. I had also heard them a couple of years on a small appearence on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I got my CD, and looked at it. I thought "Cool, four chicks that play their own instruments." I popped it in my CD player, and it was awesome. There isn't a song on this that I didn't like. My favorites were "Sellout" "Just Like You", and "Selfish". I do reccomend that all go and hunt down the video for "Sellout". It's cool!
THIS IS ONE AWESOME CD!!.......2004-12-17
I originally bought this because I liked their performance of "Me vs. the World" on the Freaky Friday soundtrack. So I went the the record label's site to see if they had any cd's available. When I saw "Get Real" was available, I took a risk and bought it. Originally, I really only liked Sellout and Unsaid Goodbyes. But after a while, I really got to liking this CD. It was worth the $10. Unlike other reviews, I really love the song "Selfish". It just really gets me moving. If you like music from bands like Lillix, buy this CD
Unexpectedly good.......2003-12-27
When I first received this CD as a gift, I was excited because it looked interesting, but I was also a little hesitant at the same time. After listening to it, I discovered that it takes a while to really enjoy the songs, but it can be done. Here's a breakdown of some of their good songs:
2)"Over It"-While the lyrics for this song isn't anything I haven't already heard ("I know what you're thinking/I know just what you think of me...")and there's the occasional whining, this is one of the better "after the break-up" songs I've heard in a long time.
4)"Just Like You"-In this song, the girls sing really well (no whining can be found) but the rhymes sound forced ("I'm hesitant/Call the president/Maybe he will say a prayer for me..." This aside, it's an enjoyable song.
5)"Anything For You"-This is one of those songs that takes a while to like, but I now do. I especially like the lyrics for this song ("Summertime burned a hole inside your heart/Winter's bite froze the feelings deep inside...")and once again, the girls sing well.
6) "Milwaukee"-This "break-up" song, while having lyrics that aren't anything new, does have good description. Also, I think the girls' "angry" singing has improved because there's little whining. Definitely worth a listen!
9)"Don't Let Me Down"-This song surprised me by how upbeat it was. It's hard to describe the actual song than by saying that it's easy to enjoy.
11)"Selfish"-When I first listened to this song, I disliked the lyrics ("You messed up in so many ways I don't think that you'll understand me...") and found it in general to be annoying. Now I like it, but I recommend to NOT listen to it all the time.
My thoughts for this CD in general is to ignore the occasional whining and focus instead on the music and some of the lyrics. I myself hope that these girls will release a new, semi-improved CD sometime.

Customer Reviews:
It was OK, I guess........2007-02-07
The opening track is great, however, I bought the cd in anticipation of hearing the rendition of the fourth verse of the Star Spangled Banner from the football game and it wasn't there at all. I have never heard the that piece of music performed so magnificently! But I guess this is a characteristic of "sound tracks"; some items in the movie soundtrack don't seem to make it to the soundtrack you buy from the store.
Travesty.......2006-03-14
One of Goldsmith's last scores, we get the ruined versions of the main tune. Goldsmith had it right, and in Hebrew. The Yolanda versions are awful.
This is one of those albums completely unfaithful the the true genius of the composer.
good but the ordering was kind of off.......2003-08-25
this cd had great pieces but some of the pieces where out of place such as "If We Can Get Through This" but overall it is a good cd
Goog Work.......2003-04-08
The Sum Of All Fears soundtrack CD is a perfect work. 90% of the songs fits with the film action. On the other hand if the composer could work on it with gathering the songs together in harmony and adding all the instruments of a symphony orchestra, it will be a symphonic poem.
The sum of a great soundtrack.......2002-12-20
With Basil Poledouris and James Horner that did previous Tom Clancy films, Jerry Goldsmith steps in and delivers a great score to the latest film, The Sum of All Fears. The soundtrack starts and ends with a song written by Goldsmith (he wrote the music, which becomes the theme) called "If We Could Remember" which is performed by Yolanda Adams. This song should be nominated for an Academy Award because of its outstanding music and lyrics. The second track "The Mission" includes "If We Could Remember", this time performed by Shana Blake Hill, with a 2 note middle eastern theme thrown in. Goldsmith uses a chorus throughout several of the tracks in a Russian like manner to convey the setting of the film. "The Bomb" is a great track which features chorus, low brass, percussion, and synths. "That Went Well" features the choir and brass playing that haunting Russian theme that I talked about earlier. Really the only 2 action cues are found in "Clear the Stadium" and "Real Time" which represent the suspense styles Goldsmith used in Air Force One and possibly U.S. Marshals with sixteenth note string passages. "The Same Air" concludes the score with the "If We Could Remember" theme and that 2 note middle eastern theme. "If We Could Get Through This" is a decent song thrown in the middle of the score that should have been at the very beginning or very end so it doesn't get in the way of the score. The same thing can be said about "Nessun Dorma" which is a great piece performed by Bruce Sledge in an opera like fashion. Concluding the soundtrack is a reprise of "If We Could Remember". To sum it all up, this is a great soundtrack that shows Goldsmith at his best. I wish the 2 themes were used much more often than they were, which is why a 5 star rating is lacking. But, a great soundtrack and a must have.

An artist of stunning originality and courage........2004-11-20
Billy continues his development as an artist of stunning originality and courage. He's not afraid to go deep, but always does so with inventiveness and a highly developed poetic sensibility. And there are also some cuts that are just plain fun! Not only is the beautiful, intelligent songwriting and richly textured guitar work wonderful, but the production style is multi-layered and very fresh -- fans of his previous adult CD LIFE SO FAR will not be disappointed! Billy Jonas is a true original, and I love GET REAL!

Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26
This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.
The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.
Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.
Other stand-outs are:
The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
Over the Rainbow
It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Customer Reviews:
Willie KIng is the BLUES!!.......2007-07-18
When I got into the blues 2 years ago, I had no idea I would be flying back to Alabama to attend Freedom Creek Blues Festival, Willie King's homage to the blues!! But, I saw a snippet of his work in Martin Scorcese's The Blues DVD set, and I said to my husband, "I have to go to Alabama and see Willie King." Unexplicable! Two weeks later, I was there.
I can't say enough good things about this music. But first about Willie: he's a decent guy who tries to do good things. He greets his fans with such love and devotion: his fans are his kids. He's approachable and loves the contact with his fans.
Willy is serious when it comes to "lovin' one another" and models it beautifully. He laughed when a few of us missed the sexual overtones of some of his lyrics, but tackfully explained them. He writes 99% of his music as well. Great lyrics and creative, intense playing.
King's band, The Liberators: Rick on keyboard and harp, Debbie on bass guitar and singer, and Willie James on drums are professionals to the core. They help make Willie look even better: it's an extraordinary team. Willie James gave me a drum lesson at Freedom Creek and, trust me when I say, it is HARD! But, we howelled with laughter at my attempts. I was happy I could entertain Willie James for a few minutes instead of him always mesmorizing me with his playing song after song after song.
Willie's energy is contagious. I can't match it, but I always enjoy it. It's my plan never to miss another Freedom Creek! I bought all of his CD's and I find them all exceptional for different reasons. By the last two and go from there! You won't be sorry. You'll be rockin' down the road.
Oh, and check out the new DVD documentary called Willie King "Down in the Woods." A couple came over from Europe to take 'down' Willie's life and they did an excellent job. It's not easy getting 'heart and soul' on film, yet I think this couple rose to the occasion and did it!
I Am The Blues, my review from Barcelona.......2007-07-02
I like Willie King in all its multiple facets -great voice in certain moments very similar to Howlin Wolf- good guitar playing and better compositions. I know him musically through his records: 2000's FREEDOM CREEK and 2002's LIVING ROOM IN TO NEW WORLD, both with very good themes. Willie King is an authentic Chicago Bluesman with occasional funky reminiscences. Because of the poverty, racism and oppression that he has suffered, he divides his music between sweet and struggling Blues. This I AM THE BLUES follows these guidelines and is of course a great Blues record. The opening track, the instrumental "Strolling with Willie" which carries the flavour of the well-known Otis Rush's "All your love I miss loving", contains some rhythmic and harmonic clashes between King and the band but things settle down in the rest of the record. He pays homage to HOWLIN' WOLF with "You' re going to worry", "The wolf is back" and the song which gives title to the record, "I am the Blues", which makes you think of Wolf's "Smokestack lightnin'". All other songs are also superb. I recommend this CD and I give it 4 stars.
The Real Deal.......2004-10-05
I know Willie, and when he sings, I am the blues," it's not just a song title or a lyric, it's the real deal. Willie is as honest and gritty and rolicking and real as it gets. He is the blues.
Real deal blues is alive and well.......2003-08-29
I first heard Willie King play live at his festival in Freedom Creek, deep in Alabama, where this music arises from the harsh realities of rural life. This CD is the blues as it is lived today - a soul-filled expression full of joy and misery, catharsis and dance to lighten the soul. Willie King has a great blues voice and plays some mean guitar, backed up by a rock-steady band who never overplay the groove. If you like blues in the style of R. L. Burnside, John Lee Hooker or Howlin' Wolf you will love this album.

Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09
The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

Loved the movie but,.......2006-03-10
no Aretha Franklin on the soundtrack? What the hell is that?
Great Movie, OK Soundtrack.......1999-12-28
I loved this movie, and while the soundtrack is pretty good there are some tracks I know to skip over. The soundtrack works really well for the movie, but on it's own it would be pretty mediocre.
