Children's discs, like cartoons, sometimes work on a couple of different levels, but those levels are usually predictable--the pop-culture reference that flies over a slack-jawed fourth grader's head while garnering a chuckle from her parent, for example, or the double-entendre that's decidedly singular in the eyes of a 6-year-old child. The Tragic Treasury, the companion disc to Daniel Handler's creepily addictive Lemony Snicket series of books, is in a whole different league: 11-year-olds and the adults who hover over them, waiting for their own chance to devour each title, will love its verisimilitude--songs like "Scream and Run Away" and "Smile! No One Cares How You Feel" couldn't have been concocted for anything else--and indie-rock types, be they 19 or 62, will love its drearily exceptional hipness. Whether you know your grim grottos from your vile villages and hostile hospitals (all Snicket titles) couldn't matter less: if artful gloom-leaning pop grabs you, this disc gives up the goods, and of a quality you won't find anywhere else besides a handful of less-inspired Gothic Archies releases. Album Description

This musical companion to bestselling novelist Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is comically creepy fun for children of all ages. The Gothic Archies is a musical project of Stephin Merritt, the songwriter best known for his band the Magnetic Fields. The album, entitled The Tragic Treasury, features music originally recorded for the audiobooks of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Tragic Treasury contains 13 songs corresponding to the 13 books in the series, with two additional bonus tracks also inspired by the series. All music is performed by the Gothic Archies, with Lemony Snicket accompanying on accordion. The Tragic Treasury is being released October 10, 2006, in conjunction with the final Lemony Snicket book, The End.

This CD is brilliant, keeping in tone with the books. I've listened to it over and over. My favorite song on the CD is Dreary, Dreary, Dreary.

An Enjoyable, Elcectic Collection of Songs.......2007-01-15

When I heard Stephen Merrit play "Shipwrecked" as part of an artist's segment on public radio, I knew I had to check this album out. It was not a waste. Stephen Merrit and Daniel Handler show themselves to be not only to be competent lyricists, but versatile musicians. Plus Everyone can find something the enjoy about this album. Though the songs are geared towards a younger audience often sounding like a twisted Shel Siversteen poems, I think adults can appreciate the underlying dark humor that Merrit and Handler inject into every track.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Even though it includes some of the same songs, this isn't the Time-Life Christmas collection advertised annually on TV. It's actually a budget version of that anthology, and not a bad deal at all. Some may argue it's missing the two Elvis Presley tracks found on the three-CD TV version. Others will contend that any self-respecting Christmas music aficionado probably already owns (or should own) Elvis's wonderful '57 Christmas Album. What's attractive about this one is it gathers a lot of classic singular performances in one place--a tad too much Bing Crosby, perhaps, but also the original hit versions of "Jingle Bell Rock," Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby," Burl Ives's "Holly Jolly Christmas," and the Drifters' "White Christmas" (the blueprint for Elvis's version). This is a terrific cross section of seasonal sounds. --Bill Holdship

Disappointing.......2007-01-09

I purchased this item from the television ad the year it was released directly from Time-Life. As a result of getting divorced, I needed to repurchase this great set I had bought from Time-Life years ago. After seeing the price for the bundle and recognizing the album covers, I was elated to finally get a new set for myself. Upon receipt, I immediately discovered that it is not "As Seen on TV" at all. the song selection is a fraction of the original, with a different discograpghy, but still the same album covers.
The songs are indeed great classics, however, if you have experienced the original "As Seen on TV" set that was released in 2001 you, too, will be as disappointed and left feeling rather robbed.

I am a music lover and to me and my family the Christmas season is a time that the joyful and heartfelt music of the time should be heard from near and far, this collection fits the bill to do just that. In it you will find so many songs that you grew-up with and hearing them will touch a cord in your heart and bring to memory the joy of the season. I highly recommend this collection and hope you will be as enriched with it as my family is. Merry Christmas!

Classic Christmas.......2006-11-27

Christmas music lovers, you've found your collection. Much like the excellence of 'Ultimate Christmas,' Time-Life's 'Treasury of Christmas' should be a vintage favorite. Popular songs by Perry Como, Gene Autry, Andy Williams, and Judy Garland provide a goldmine of heartwarming holiday favorites. Some may find the collection to contain too much Bing, but I personally think that's an asset--rather than a liability. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is a magnificent gem. Bing's voice soars to the star with spare but excellent accompaniment that provides an excellent alternative to the perennial "White Christmas". The highlights are essential: Dean Martin's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," Burl Ives "Holly Jolly Christmas," Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad," The Beach Boys "Little Saint Nick," and the original favorite version of "Jingle Bell Rock" all assemble a thoughtful, vintage stocking stuffer for any C.D. collection. The lesser songs are all as mellow and accomodating as a roaring fire and a cup of egg nog or hot buttered rum. If you go no further, and want just one Christmas album, this is the one to get. Unless you like a mixture of the progressive and the traditional, then 'Ultimate Christmas' is the C.D. to buy. Then, again, most people would do well to have both. I have no regrets.

Two of the same disc.......2005-12-31

I would imagine the discs are good. i was very excited to listen to it on christmas morning. Disc Two seems good, I wouldn't know about disc one as I opened this on Christmas day to find two of disc 2. Nice.

Not as good as the original.......2005-12-13

A great Christmas CD but in terms of comparing it to the original, it falls short; I grew up listening to the original compilation and thought that by buying this new one, the best songs would be on it but I was wrong. I know that "favorites" are subjective so I will only be so bold as to say that I prefer the former version. In short this CD is still a festive and fun one at that!

This tape was sent to me by a good friend and I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. We play it in our house every day and my son never tires of it. The songs are lovely, melodic and child & adult friendly. Hap Palmer has a beautiful & gentle voice. My husband and I find ourselves humming these tunes as we go about our day. The songs are about real activities that kids do and they can relate to them. Get this CD/Tape. You will not be disappointed.

I recommend this CD for anyone with young children. Both of my kids love it (they are 5 and 2). In fact, my 2 year old screams from the back seat of the car, "Mommy, dan-dan on!" (Dan-dan, meaning this particular music which she also enjoys dancing too.) I first heard the music at their former babysitters house and knew I had to get it.

I cannot tell you how many times I have arrived at work still singing these songs. I enjoy it as much as the kids do. Cute lyrics and melodies about all the things that are important in a kids life. My 2 year old sings along with the rest of us. "My Mommy Comes Back" has also helped her adjust to a new day care. Don't hesitate, buy it!

Both my 1 1/2 and 4 year olds love this tape! "I can put my clothes on by myself" is an empowering favorite. When my 4 year old dresses herself, she still sings this song. "Baby's First" makes everyone laugh. The funny sounds have my 1 1/2 year old giggling with his sister in the back seat.

Interesting but somewhat disappointing.......2006-11-06

I was excited to order this CD of traditional Sicilian music after watching a PBS special on Alan Lomax. It's a compilation of music he recorded as a researcher and these songs are priceless as historical artifacts. However, I am disappointed by the selection of music, although I don't know how what he recorded compares to what was included on this CD. There are a few very interesting songs to listen to, but there is not much difference between many of them. Futhermore, this CD includes a relatively long spoken recording of a traditional Sicilian story which is interesting to hear once, but not something you're going to want to listen to over and over again. Being somewhat acquainted with traditional Sicilian music, it's unfortunate that this CD (and maybe his original recording) doesn't include more of a variety. I also ordered his CD of music from Abruzzo and I'm more pleased with that one. Bottom line, if you want to remember Nonna by listening to Sicilian music this CD is probably not for you. If you want to hear some very old, very interesting music that harkens back centuries, get it.

This music was interesting, to be able to hear the actual songs of the people as they worked in the fields, etc. A little difficult for me to understand due to the sicilian dialect, but still enjoyed it. I am keeping it as a reference for my children to have a piece of their heritage that is this slowing disappearing. Thank you for having recorded it before this happened.

Maybe the best all around selection of vintage bluegrass selections by the original artists. If I had to select only one CD to take with me; this would be the one.

Careless Liner Notes & Short Play Time Mars Fine Collection.......2002-08-08

Despite the fact that this is a 2 CD collection, there are only 24 selections here and less than 65 minutes of music (less music than on many single CD collections). There are 4 pages of liner notes by legendary bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, who is featured in the collection as a member of J.D. Crowe and the New South. It is not clear who selected the 24 tracks but the executive producer is a fellow named Robert Hull.

There are some curious selections in this 2 CD set, such as Grandpa Jones' "Mountain Dew" (it's a great recording but it certainly is not bluegrass). The opening track, Ricky Skaggs' cover of Bill Monroe's "Uncle Pen," has a contemporary country music arrangement with an annoying, heavy drumbeat plus solos on pedal steel guitar and electric guitar. It's great to see Larry Sparks represented on this collection but "Smokey Mountain Memories" is hardly one of Sparks' best recordings (and it has no guitar break; Sparks is a masterful lead guitarist).

I am upset by the omission here of Carter Stanley (well, there is a picture of the Stanley Brothers and mention of Carter Stanley in Rice's liner notes, but there is no recording by the Stanley Brothers). Also missing is Reno and Smiley, the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Hylo Brown, Jim Eanes, Carl Story, and other greats from the early days of bluegrass. And there is not a single gospel recording!

But what really distresses me is the carelessness of the liner notes/recording details. Rice refers to the Country Gentleman's "Legend Of The Rebel Soldier" as being "penned by Charlie Monroe" but under the track listings it is credited as "traditional, arranged by Charlie Moore" (the latter is correct). Rice refers to Flatt and Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" as a remake but under the track listings it is shown as the original Mercury recording (it is a remake). In describing Bill Monroe's 1954 remake of "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" Rice states that "it is the essential bluegrass tune" and that "all the essential elements are here." There is no banjo or harmony vocals on this recording, which is fine by me, but considering this I don't agree that all the essential elements are present.

Those interested in an introduction to bluegrass music are much better served by the Rhino label's excellent "Appalachian Stomp" series (2 CDs sold separately with 36 tracks in all). Probably the single best introduction to bluegrass is the Rounder label's "Hand-Picked: 25 Years Of Bluegrass On Rounder Records" (2 CDs sold together for less than the price of a single CD with 49 tracks in all).

NEVER THOUGHT I'D LIKE HILLBILLY BLUEGRASS.......2002-07-10

This CD is a lot of fun. I tend to prefer more modern bluegrass, but after listening, I developed a new appreciation for the "old-timers" who created this toe-tapping musical style. Alison Krauss's "Two Highways" adds a little modern flavor.

I might have kept out the Beverly Hillbillies theme song, and tossed in some David Grisman. Other than that, it's great value. Fun to listen to when you're driving in the country.

Lullabies?.......2002-06-23

This may sound weird, but I bought this because not only do I really enjoy bluegrass, but my seven week old baby loves banjo music! Seriously! I get to enjoy it while the banjo lulls her to sleep. It's actually kind of funny but great help as well! And I love the variety.

Beautiful...Nick Drake made love to magic.......2006-01-11

Altough it don't have any "special features," only several songs taken from his four albums FIVE LEAVES LEFT, BRYTER LAYTER, PINK MOON and MADE LOVE TO MAGIC, this is an excellent collection of his work, with very good sound quality.

The Introduction is a fine, half-minute long musical score without vocal, followed by Hazey Jane II, a jazz song full of life, not very typical for Drake, a little like Poor Boy, which is also included on this CD. More sad songs are also inclued, like Way to Blue, which easily can make you cry, and the beautiful Northern Sky, and, of course, one of his most well known songs, Pink Moon.

If you already have Drake's three albums, I would rather recommend TIME OF NO REPLY or SECOND GRACE, which includes previews of several of his songs. The only one of the songs here which are not included on FIVE LEAVES LEFT, BRYTER LAYTER or PINK MOON is the beautiful Magic, but that can also be found on TIME OF NO REPLY. However, this is a great introduction to those who don't know Nick Drake very well.

It is so beautiful! Nick Drake was a genius, a so strong genius.

Great sound and even better music.......2005-11-24

This is probably the finest-sounding CD in my collection. The guitars glisten with warmth and Drake's voice never sounded so good. Instruments and voices have wonderful soundstage. Every sound on this CD has dimension and palpability. If you like MSFL or DCC discs, you'll love this CD. (I mostly play the CD layer because my CD player is far superior to my SACD player.)

Like Tim Hardin, Drake is much more a jazz musician than a folkie. The songs here are not always obvious. They sometimes take time to sink in. But the groove is what takes you along. Even during the most quiet acoustic numbers. I recently played this for a Jack Johnson fan and she loved it.

Review of the SACD content of A Treasury.......2005-07-21

It's already been discussed on what should of been include / removed from this collection, so I will just talk about the improved sound and 5.1 mix. The stereo SACD lived up to my expectations to the format, the songs had the a warm quality that I expected. The improved sound was noticeable even on the "new" version of Magic (as listed on the cd), I noticed some distortion and background noise on the cd version of the track but not on the SACD. The 5.1 mix I thought were well done, even with the acoustic tracks such as Black Eyed Dog. The vocals are mixed in the center channel and the rear channels and the guitar is in front and rear channels. Other SCAD with just acoustic/vocal tracks just had a three channel mix, which didn't add much over the original stereo mix. Anyway I give the sound 5 stars and the song selection 4 stars.

I thought it was great sounding.......2004-12-23

This was the first Nick Drake album I really liked and I attributed it to the improved sound. I always thought he was good but I got a bit bored with him over a whole album of songs.

Subsequently with a new better stereo I am in love with all of his stuff (at least the three studio albums, so far).

I think the sound is pretty good for early seventies / late sixties recordings.

I liked this better than "Way To Blue: An Introduction" though now that that has been remastered maybe this disc is only to test out your surround sound.

No new song (Plaisir d'amour) on the US version.. why?.......2004-11-24

Be careful when buying this cos Plaisir d'amour is not on the US release (apparently) - its supposed to be a bonus track following From the morning!

Also, the albums too short. Could've fitted At the Chime of a city clock, certainly

An Invaluable Collection of Heartfelt Songs.......2004-03-18

This 30-song collection of field recordings from 1934-1946 accurately reflect the role music played in the the everyday lives of rural America. When you listen to these songs, not only do you hear the joys and fears and sorrows of the performers' lives, you often hear in the background children laughing, dogs barking, clocks ticking, trucks driving by. These are not professional musicians, but real people who deliver their songs with an intensity and honesty you can't find in the recording studio.

Each performer has his own unique story. Turner Junior was a blind street musician who accompanies himself on harmonica on the spiritual "When I Lay My Burden Down." He philosphically tells Alan Lomax that when you leave this earthly life "you'll see with a spiritual eye." A young Ora Dell Graham was attending the Drew Colored High School (which also schooled elementary students) where she recites a couple of playground rhymes. The liner notes tell us she would not live to see her twenty-first year. She was killed during a holdup.

This collection also covers a wide range of the American musical experience. "Rock Island Line" is performed by a group of convicts at the Arkansas Cummins State Farm. The traditional folk song "Soldier's Joy" is performed (in Lomax's words) by "two blind men and three day laborers." "Creek Lullaby" is sung a capella by a young Native American girl identified only as Margaret, whose haunting vocal is made all the more memorable by singing the song in Creek. Fiddler Jess Morris was a working cowboy in Texas when he recorded "Goodbye, Old Paint."

Each song on this collection has a fascinating story behind it, and the accompanying 40-page booklet tells them all in loving and meticulous detail. The importance of the exhaustive work of John and Alan Lomax can not be overstated. These historical recordings would be lost to time if not for their efforts. It is impossible to listen to these recordings without being moved. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Comfort food for the ears..........2000-08-07

Haunting ballads, stories and lively dance tunes sung by "regular people" (including Woody Guthrie) provide a musical history of rare breadth. If you are looking for slickness and glitz, this CD is not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy honest music, are interested in folk history, and perhaps are a closet (or shower) singer yourself, you will enjoy this glimpse into the souls of people whose spirits fill these songs.

An added bonus is the booklet that is included. It provides background on the Library of Congress's Folk Archive and the field recordings done by John, Alan, and Elizabeth Lomax in the late 30's to mid-40's. It also gives a short song and artist history for each track. The fact that one child singer died before her 21st birthday makes her song especially haunting.

Many of us live comfortably insulated, yuppified, sanitized lives. These recordings remind us where we came from. Most importantly, they demonstrate the power of music, that it feeds our souls and gives us strength. We all have that power to make music. Some of us have just forgotten how to do it, or have been told we should not try to sing or play. These songs help us remember on many levels, and show us that making music is a blessing we are all capable of enjoying.

This particular song made me want to purchase this CD its a wonderful song even my kids love singing it. If your a FOLK MUSIC fan you'll love the CD its great!

TRUST ME

A Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings.......2000-03-29

I purchased this CD so I could listen to Sea Lion Woman, a song I heard during the final credits to The General's Daughter. The other 29 songs were an added bonus. Some of these songs, recorded in the 30's and 40's, are a real joy to listen to. Also included with the CD is a small booklet telling you about each song. To hear "Pullin' the Skif" and "Shortenin' Bread", only to learn that the young singer died in a hold-up she perpetrated before her twenty-first birthday just grabs the heart.

Before his first complete "solo" score for 1912's THE RED PETTICOAT, Jerome Kern co-wrote the music for or contributed songs to at least 26 different Broadway musicals and/or reviews, starting with AN ENGLISH DAISY in 1904. In his liner notes to "Jerome Kern Treasury," Miles Kruger writes: "During the ensuing twenty-seven years, Kern, more than any other composer, was to alter the entire nature of the American Musical Theatre." And, "Jerome Kern has the distinction of having composed for every major lyricist of his time, with the solitary exception of Lorenz Hart. His career inspired George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, and an entire generation of composers who came later."

There probably is no one who was more active in the restoration and recording of American stage works than John McGlinn, whose superb series of "authentic," complete recordings for EMI/Angel - ANNIE, GET YOUR GUN/ANYTHING GOES/BRIGADOON/KISS ME, KATE/SHOW BOAT/SITTING PRETTY - speak for themselves. In addition, he has produced recordings of overtures by Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern, as well as recordings of songs by Porter, Kern, Rodgers & Hart, and Kurt Weill, sung by the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa, Thomas Hampson, and Frederica von Stade. And let us not fail to mention the delightful "Busby Berkeley Album." For this album, he has arranged Kern's work " . . . in virtual chronological order, with selections from his very first complete Broadway score of 1912 to his last in 1939." - Miles Kruger

Singing these wonderful Kern songs with great panache are George Dvorsky, Thomas Hampson, Jeanne Lehman, Robecca Luker, Lydia Mila, Hugh Panaro and the London Simphonietta Chorus. Backing them up is the London Sinfonietta, thoroughly savoring the tasty original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett and " . . . of the legendary Frank Saddler, Bennett's predecessor and mentor. Saddler was the first great Broadway orchestrator, and scored the early works of Kern, Porter, Gershwin (and practically everybody else)." ( - John McGlinn) And how wonderful it is to hear "real" orchestrations, instead of the watered-down synthesized stuff so pervasive on today's Great White Way.

With its comprehensive liner notes and complete lyrics, ". . . this album is not only a musical biography of the composer, but also a chronicle of the development of the Broadway musical itself." ( - Kruger) Standards like "The Last Time I Saw Paris," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," " The Folks Who Live on the Hill," "She Didn't Say Yes," "The Song Is You," and "Till the Clouds Roll By" share the bill with less-familiar fare like "In Egern on the Tegern See," "The Bullfrog Patrol," and "Whip-Poor-Will." And just wait until you hear the London Sinfionietta swing the "Harlem Boogie-Woogie."

Surprisingly, aside from SHOW BOAT and SITTING PRETTY, only three other of Kern's Broadway scores are available in acceptable recordings: the 1952 studio recording of ROBERTA reissued by DRG, the 1958 off-Broadway revival of LEAVE IT TO JANE on Aei, and the 1975 revival cast recording of VERY GOOD EDDIE, also on DRG. Miles Kruger writes: "THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE, with much of its bewitching dialogue underscoring included, deserves to be properly recorded more than any other unrecorded show." After listening to this recording, you'll probably - like me - wish that about for all of Kern's shows.

Highly Recommended. And thanks to ArkivMusic, this long-deleted gem is once again available, complete with original cover art and those wonderful liner notes and lyrics. Order it today!
