Sounds of a happy times.......2007-07-19
Today you may find this songs "ridicule" because of their "middle class burgoisise" context, but back in 1977, they sounded fresh and optimistic.
And that is how I remember them: the atmosphere of the small sea-towns, an aura of Casablanca movie in the title song, the semi-gay voice of Al Stewart sounds like one of a spoiled, honest child, hungry for adventures, nice girls and harmless "noir" adventures.
Today,it still sounds just the same; perfect for beach-caffe s with margaritas and a sunset. White mornings after the one-night stands with satin-ladies, gauloise before entering the exotic marketplaces in Maroco or Spain. Good for people over 35, or maybe younger romantics.
Not for hip-hop lovers.
Brilliant production, fresh as it was 30 years ago.
Out Of This World.......2007-03-20
What can I say about this album except that since it's release back in the 70s, it has always been one of my favorite albums. I repurchased the album because my original copy was bad. And I guess if you listened to a CD like this one as much as I have, your copy would be bad too. I consider this album a classic of classics and highly recommend it to anyone. You won't be disappointed.
Al Stewart Enters His Best Period.......2006-12-23
With YEAR OF THE CAT, Al Stewart enters his best period musically. He'd found a sympathetic producer in Alan Parsons, whose production added much-needed muscle to his music, while Stewart's folkie leanings prevented Parsons from overdoing things. The closing title song uses the "mystery woman" theme to describe a feeling about being slightly "out of your time", and thus describes why I hang up pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to thoughts of going to food-related reunions at my old school, but the other songs are also quite good. The fact that a couple of Stewart's albums have dated poorly takes nothing away from the excellence of this one or its immediate successor, TIME PASSAGES.
Fits the definition of "classic".......2006-11-26
Recently I've gotten back into vinyl. "Year of The Cat" is one of the handful of records I kept, and thank god for that moment of clarity! I'm listening to this right now on a new turntable. First time I've heard it in probably 2 decades. The music really holds up - There's not a weak song on the entire album. The recording quality is fantastic (recorded at Abbey Road in London).
Very highest recommendation.
Still strong 30 years later.......2006-09-12
I loved this album back when it first came out, but I was also 13 at the time and had questionable musical tastes. In a fit of nostalgia, I picked it up recently and was surprised at how well it holds up thirty years later. Listening to it with adult and much more educated ears, I found that my favorite tracks have changed--the women in title track is no longer my ideal self, for example, but I understand "Broadway Hotel" in a way I didn't as a kid. Full of odd little twists and influenced by forgotten moments in history, it's a fantastic example of thoughtful, intelligent, '70s soft rock.

Album Description
For a singer and songwriter whose work is suffused with history and detail, Al Stewart follows no creative timetable. It's been 10 years since his last US CD of new material and almost 30 years since his "Year of the Cat" single and album became unforgettable international hits.
"A Beach Full of Shells," Al's Appleseed debut and first new US release since 1995's "Between the Wars," finds Stewart in timeless form, presenting 13 new songs that span centuries and continents, autobiography and fiction. As he nears the 20-album mark, Stewart remains a distinctively literate and vivid storyteller, time-traveling and teleporting from World War I battlefields to Sixties bedrooms, from ships to airplanes to ice floes, from the specific to the mysterious.
Musical settings that encompass electric folk-rock and acoustic ballads, colorful dabs of classical and Eastern music, and even a touch of Little Richard-style piano pounding, are as varied and imaginative as Al's subject matters. The CD's producer, Laurence Juber has enhanced Al's elegant Scottish drawl, nimble acoustic guitar-work and keyboards with his own Grammy-winning guitar playing, string arrangements and percussion and a flexible rhythm section.
"The Immelman Turn" kicks off the CD in a style reminiscent of Fairport Convention, with spirited violin and barbed electric guitar sweeping us into the tale of a doomed pilot's last flight. Then we fall down the genteel rabbit hole of "Mr. Lear," a tribute to the 19th Century nonsense poet, before landing in the veiled intrigue of "Royal Courtship." Elsewhere and elsewhen, we are taken "Somewhere in England 1915"; into the freezing bleakness of "Out in the Snow"; to visit party girl "Gina in the Kings Road"; to the frenzied rock 'n' roll past of "Class of '58" and a peaceful, nostalgia-filled old age in "Katherine of Oregon." And that's just part of the tour on "A Beach Full of Shells."

Lyricist, Novelist, Poet.......2007-06-10
I write novels for a living and so does Al Stewart. The difference is that he sets his to music. Lyrically and melodically beautiful, full of evocative imagery and significant allegory, "A Beach Full of Shells" is one of Al's best efforts to date, an amazing accomplishment given his already impressive body of work. If you're a fan of Al already, rejoice in this dazzling achievement and the stunning realization that the man's talents haven't dissipated even one iota over his long and brilliant career. If you're not a fan, give a listen and discover what you've been missing. You won't be disappointed.Devil's Brew
A good Al Stewart album..........2007-02-13
...if not quite up to the standards of his classic albums from the late '60s and early '70s. One of the things that impressed me most is that Al's voice has really not changed or, significantly, diminished over the years; the same cannot be said of all singer/songwriters or lead vocalists in one band or another. He has the same pleasant, smooth timbre he's had since his first album, 1967's Bedsitter Images.
That said, the songs are good, if not the most remarkable of his career. Unlike an earlier reviewer, I quite liked "The Immelman Turn"--after all, how many songwriters do you know can put together a decent song about barnstorming and its dangers? "Katherine of Oregon" has the nice lyrical twists that Al Stewart does so well with his customary dry humour. I'll agree about "Class of '58"--it's not bad, but not terribly memorable, and the change from a ballad to a '50s style rocker midway through doesn't really work. On the whole, however, it's a nice Al Stewart album, and when it was released in '05, it was the first he'd released over here in a decade (2000's Down in the Cellar was not given a Stateside release, probably because few American listeners really wanted to hear a concept album about wine [one of Al's favourite subjects], beer-drinking nation that we are), so it was welcome for at least that reason.
Lastly, if you get a chance next time he's on tour here, go and see Al live. I witnessed his performance at the Flye Point Festival in Maine last summer, and while he does tend to spend a lot of time between songs on stories, they are certainly no less than entertaining--plus he performed such classics as "Soho (Needless to Say)," "In Brooklyn" and, of course, "Year of the Cat"...solo acoustic, yet.
Al Stewart's Best Album Ever........2006-08-14
Yes, it is better than his landmark albums Year of the Cat and Time Passages. Who would have thought that someone could put out his best work nearly 30 years after falling out of the industry's consciousness? 1992's Famous Last Words was a masterpiece, proving that Al Stewart was still a great songwriter and performer, just as good even if not as popular as he was in the late '70s. But now he has topped everything else he has ever done. If you like ANYTHING by Al Stewart, you have got to get this album. It is sheer genius.
This one calls for 6, maybe 7 stars.......2006-07-22
Ever wake up in the middle of the night, delighted, or agitated, by a song going around in your head? Here's a dozen of them for you. Ever have a hard time cozying up to a new CD, only to wind up loving it, wall-to-wall, by the 5th or 10th listening? Ever roll down the windows and cranked up the volume like some kid? Well, here you go.
Ever wonder why rockers don't write 'em like that anymore? Turns out, they do... at least, Stewart does. Is this a rock album? Not predominantly, but if you foot-shuffle or neck-roll to Wilson Pickett, Duane Eddy, James Brown, Jerry Lee... I can think of several dozen reasons, any one of which would cause you to laugh off any 2-star reviews for this masterpiece you might come across, but it's already been said, below. Here's what I will say, though: go do yourself a big favor: buy this CD.
Oh, and one other thing... if you have young children, play
"Mr. Lear" for them. It'll work magic on both of you.
Pass this one up......sorry Al.......2006-04-21
With all due respect to all the Al Stewart fans out there, this CD is simply awful. As of Al's loyal fans since 1973, I can say with all due respect that this one is well below what he has done in the past.
I found the music largely unremarkable and the lyrics to most of the songs uninspired.Take a listen to the "Immelman Turn" and "Class of 58" and you can't wait for them to end. The lyrics are repetive and the music just boring and very simple. I did enjoy "Katherine of Oregon" but to me this was simply the best of the worst. To my ears, these songs sound like someone is just trying to pay the bills.
By all means sample some of the cuts before you buy. Better yet, pick up his "Between the wars",or "Russians and Americans". Almost any of his works are far better than this. What a disappointment.

Customer Reviews:
I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30
Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.
The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.
I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.
There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."
But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.
First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.
Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?
On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?
The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).
There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.
With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?
Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.
In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.
Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10
Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.
ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21
Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.
Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.
Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:
* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.
* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.
* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.
* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.
* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.
Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.
SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19
"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.
A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21
This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Best Blues CD of 2005........2006-05-17
If there was a better blues CD in 2005, I certainly didn't hear it . . . and I heard a lot of them. This is what blues records USED to sound like. A rock-solid band performing deep, gritty, real-deal blues. It's the kind of CD that would fit comfortably next to top-shelf releases by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James and Jimmy Reed. Essential listening.

Stellar album from a magical artist.......2004-10-30
The year is 1976-77 I am a junior in college and I am dating a girl going to school in a city 90 minutes from my campus. She was my first love and it was the best year of my life. Al Stewart's album takes me back to a time when the possibilities were endless and I took love for granted until it was too late. His music stands the test of time and will always be a bridge to that mystical year. It is nice to know that others appreciate this great musician. Oh, I almost forgot I got to see Al in concert at the Cincinnati Music Hall in 1979 and he was great!!!!!!!
A must have...the best song ever....yeh.......2004-03-03
Year of The Cat: A song that's like fine wine, it betters with time. Time, one of AL STEWARTS FAVORITE COMPONENTS. Some may argue, some may merely disagree, but really, think about it. What song has it all, a musical masterpiece and where the lyrics take you to the mountains of Rio De Janeiro. Yes, they really do have trains there, and women that mystify the soul too. To ponder Stewart's mindset when composing the song! This song was indeed the gem of the seventies, when "taking it easy" not only brought Winslow, Az into view, but a whole new perspective, a whole new scene. One that only Al Stewart could so culminate into ecstasy. Yes, We all know the song, rock radio saw to that, but was it truly to be played after, or before, for that matter, just another rock song? No, this song was and is still special, much more special, as it has and will continue to make the listener listen just a little closer, and to stop and think of their Space in Time at that moment, or even a moment they might have missed. Enough of Zep's Stairway to Heaven, Year of The Cat by Al Stewart is my favorite of all time. A time when Britian gave so much to the worldwide music scene. As before, listen, but always dream, of a time, a place, the woman, the train. A Bogart movie and Peter Laurie, incence and patchouli, a hidden door and a river running through, the bus, the tourists, the rhythm of a new born day, The Year of The Cat....hmmm... Year of The Cat
Sincerly spoken,
True music fan, Alan

Only 4 stars because the EMI version is better.......2003-07-13
This is one of Alan Parsons' best producing jobs, and that's saying a lot. The wonderful sound combined with solid folk rock songwriting and very talented bandmembers make this one of the best recordings of the 70s, PERIOD. MFSL, the audiophile label, chose this as their 9th release.
The EMI version currently available has better sound plus 3 bonus cuts. The bonus cuts aren't terribly important unless you're a fan, but the sound makes a big difference.
do yourself a favor and buy this album!.......2003-03-28
I first heard Al Stewart when I was about 10 years old (as of this review, I am 24). My father owned a ragged cassette tape of songs copied from the Year of the Cat vinyl LP, which we played in the car and at home quite extensively. Even at such a tender age, I could feel the genuine emotions conveyed through his songs...the sympathetic lamentations of "Lord Grenville," the seclusion of "Broadway Hotel," and the haunting remembrance of the title song. As I grew older into high school age, I went through a phase of musical exploration one might expect of someone at that stage of adolescence, seeking much more aggressive and noise-oriented forms of musical expression to placate the confusion of discomforts stirring within me, and thus I ignored the auditory pleasantries of childhood. But when I entered college and came to know myself more maturely, I started feeling a yearning for certain nostalgic facets of my past, and this album was one of them. How wonderful it was to find the CD here on Amazon.com!
Even as I listen to it now, I still find previously unnoticed nuances, instrumentation, and emotional gradations. Aside from the brilliant music contained on this album, I have also come to recognize how incredible the production was for its time (1976), as well as the usage of rather advanced synthesizers for gentle melodic support. The music itself is quite amazing in its atmosphere and timelessness, compared to what was then more popular. The guitar solos still ring true with clarity (not to mention the transporting drum work and bass lines), never meandering away from their purpose, and Al's to-the-point style of singing is comforting like an honest friend.
There are so many exceptional songs on this album, covering many places, moods, and even time periods. As a child, "Lord Grenville" was always my favorite, but now that I am a singer myself, I have grown partial towards "One Stage Before." Its candid lyrics and dream-like vocal effects speak clearly to a musician's heart. He is truly a modern troubador, exploring love and sadness in equal measure.
Year of the Cat is a classic on so many levels, and while my college peers are content to surrender themselves to more contemporary sounds (as am I when the mood strikes me), it is unfortunate that many of my generation will miss out on this treasure of songs simply because of its "antiquity."

Kati Szvorak and Teka take a folk tour of Hungary.......2002-12-24
This CD is a treasure trove of folk music from Hungary - NOT just children's songs. Great playing by Teka, vocals by Kati Szvorak. There are some vocals by non-adults, but are done well, not whiny or cutsey. Songs from practically every region of (greater)Hungary - Dunantul, Mezoseg, Moldva, Zobor - arranged in sections by "purpose" - wedding,Carnival, etc. For instance, in the dance section you get a great Dunantuli set. I originally purchased this because it has some Christmas songs on it. It also has a wonderful name-calling/taunting song - "S a te fejed akkora..." If you like Marta Sebestyen, Sebo, etc, you will like this CD. It's also a great introduction to Hungarian Folk music. Enjoy.

Impeccably Performed, Stunning Sound.......1998-11-20
The beautifully captured reverberant sound of the acoustic space is matched by gorgeous choral balance, precise diction, and definitive interpretation. In spite of the contemporary style of the compositions - Rorem doesn't shy away from crunchy dissonances - this is a very enjoyable collection of Choral music with many beautfiul moments.

Well...I think..........2003-11-16
The last reviewer missed the boat on this one. Anniversary Editions should include a sparkling master of the original, and nothing more (imagine Pink Floyd's DSOTM with extras...). It's a remaster of what was originally released, and nothing more. Extra tracks are what boxed sets (and CD singles) are all about recently. The extras here are a real bonus. This one truly delivers.
This is one of the best remasters I've EVER heard. Maybe it's time to upgrade your equipment? You'd be amazed at the difference. My system doesn't scream, but the difference is definately there from the original CD. Much worth the upgrade if you already have it on CD. This even beats the pants off the old MFSL LP, which I thought was superior to the original CD.
It Was A Very Good Year.......2003-07-21
"Year Of The Cat" was Al Stewart's breakthrough hit in America. The album was produced by Alan Parsons, who also produced Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" to much acclaim. The remastering job done on this import CD is outstanding. Peter White's acoustic guitar playing, featured in the song "On The Border," especially sounds vibrant. The first bonus track is a live version of that song. The second bonus song, "Belsize Blues," was never officially released and alone is worth the price of this CD. More of a rocker than a blues number, it features a bluesy harmonica not heard elsewhere on the album. The lyrics flow along in a style very reminiscent of early Bob Dylan. The third bonus track is not a song at all. Al discusses the musicians who played on the album and briefly explains the meaning of each song. I highly recommend this import CD to all fans of Al Stewart.
A Sadly Missed Opportunity.......2001-09-24
It's increasingly fashionable to 'remaster' CDs; with some justification, as the technology has advanced in the years since albums like YOTC were first released digitally.
Personally, my ears aren't finely tuned enough to feel major benefit from this re-release, and my ancient sound system made no comment, so I have had to concentrate on the 'bonus tracks'
On the Border (live) is taken from the Chicago Radio sessions; it's a fine version, but technically hardly an advertisement for digital remastering. More seriously, those sessions included a ten-minute Year of the Cat, with a four minute keyboard intro, and marvellous sax solo - why isn't that one here?
Belsize Blues owes its presence here to its absence from other 'official' releases, though this version was first released on the unofficial Coldest Winter in Memory collection. The date suggests it could have been a rejected track from the original YOTC - though the flavour is five years earlier. The sleeve notes leave us none the wiser.
Story of the Songs is a commentary on the YOTC album by Al stewart; interesting, but hardly the sort of thing you'd listen to daily on your in-car stereo. Many of the concert albums include highly original and amusing intros, especially to YOTC itself; wouldn't the fictional explanations have been a better addition than a recorded sleeve note?
This remastered album will have nothing to say to new listeners, so it is clearly intended to persuade existing fans to part with their money. The die-hards will - as I did - and I don't regret it. But, by gum, I'd have been much, much happier spending a few dollars more on a proper job.
Picture it - a twin-cd set with the remastered YOTC on one disc, and the other featuring these bonus tracks, plus a selection of other live versions, complete with intro, guest artists - one YOTC even featured a guest singer - and a sleeve note that truly informed us about the collection, not just looked back to 1976.
