Where Blue Meets Blue
Where Blue Meets Blue
Editorial Reviews
Dan Kening, Chicago Tribune
"One of contemporary folk's top songsmiths... Calhoun is a master storyteller..."
Product Description
The title track of "Where Blue Meets Blue" celebrates a reunion with a long lost cousin; "Buffalo" and "The King" feature Calhoun's trademark manic/mystical lyric style. "Portrait of a Girl and Her Parents" (with David Chickering on cello) explores a girls' determination to survive as a free spirit. Gerry O'Neill plays fiddle and Kat Eggleston harmonizes on "Vancouver"; Calhoun covers John Prine's "Hello In There" and Kate MacLeod's "Wild Birds". MacLeod sings and plays fiddle on "Baby-O". "Peach Song and "River Song" feature non-human points of view; "Garage", about the exhaustion and ambivalence of daily life, presents a human one. Andrew Bird plays violin on the catchy "Politics". Working with new musical ideas, several songs feature melodic shifts into related modes within the songs' keys.

Great CD.......2003-06-02
This is one of my favorite CDs by Calhoun. I don't know how to describe so you should just listen to a few samples. It falls somewhere between folk, blues, and some hints of good ol' rock-n-roll. It seems he is finally starting to get a little recognition and it's well deserved. He has an outstanding voice and a unique gift for telling life's stories through music.
True folk music.......2003-04-07
Calhoun's powerful voice envelops you from the first song on. He sings about little things, people with unnoticed lives, or moments from his past. It's amazing how he transforms these things into songs that will move you tears or laugh out loud. I quite like this CD and it motivated me enough to buy everything I could find by him. The best (in my opinion) is "Tiger Tattoo" which I bought from the label: Waterbug Records.
A great find!.......2003-02-05
I just discoverd Andrew when I heard him play at a local folk festival. Wow what a find! Man, the guy has a great voice and he is an amazing mix of folk singer and story teller. Anyone who like Dylan or Prine will dig Calhoun. I have to agree with the reviewer who says see him live. His voice just takes over a room. The man has a gift.
How has Andrew Calhoun evaded you for so long?.......2002-08-31
How is it possible that an artist like Andrew Calhoun floats around unnoticed in the realm of singer/songerwriters? He is a rare artist that combines a classical guitar sound, poems and a unique baritone vocal for a sound so original and yet so welcoming and honest, you feel like you are coming home. If you're like me and grew up listening to the rock and pop music of the eighties and nineties, you probably starting tuning out the lyrics and just bobbed your head up and down, settling happily for a catchy tune. You may have shared my experience of discovering I've been singing along to a catchy song and suddenly realized it's not something I want to be saying much less singing at the top of my lungs out my car window. Anyway, I think you get the picture.
Andrew Calhoun refuses to join the ranks of singer/songwriters that lead us all in the what I like to term the "jingle-trance" of modern rock/pop music and as a result, you probably have never heard him. When I heard this CD, I found myself actually studying and digesting the words and digging out the lyrics sheet.
A few highlights of the CD are:
"Roads in Disrepair" a song which creates the story of a town, pride and lost love. With the passing of seasons, time slowly makes love harder to rekindle until it is too late.
"Buffalo" a modern ballad connecting family generations and tradition.
"The Peach Song" an anthem about being on the verge of discovery, self or otherwise, through the eyes of a peach.
This is a CD you will have to listen to a few times to catch all the symbolism and to fully apprecitate the artistry. A Guarunteed regular for your sound system.
If you ever get the chance to see Andrew live, it is worth your time.

get it now before it's big.......2006-06-20
I've seen these guys a few times in Nashville and they have a sound like no one else. A really good sound, too. They make good use of the soft/loud dynamic tempo changes (think Rodan from Louisville) but add some really jazzy melodic guitar lines that stick in your head all day(think The Sea and Cake). Bobber, Monarchos, and Black Patch Rider are all super catchy, with an especially tight feel. The drummer's got a deft touch on the cymbals and adds some sophistiated fills to liven things up. Although there are some nice touches (pedal steel for example)the only thing the disc lacks is a bit of production polish. The lyrics get a little buried sometimes. But you can hear that these guys have something that I haven't heard anywhere else.
This band has a U.S. release coming out in Fall 2006 on Astralwerks. I've heard the demo and it is just super. All the potential you hear on this album is realized.
My point here is, get a jump start and get this album now before there are no more copies. This is the beginning of something special.

Album Description
This collection of 10 new songs shows Johnson's evolving maturity as a songwriter. From the opening seductive cut, Stoned out in Love to the closing nod to the Doors, a ten-minute plus anthem, Sweet Water, Johnson delivers a variety of smoothly produced tunes. Latin laced love songs, back porch swamp blues, piano ballads, and straight ahead rock are sung with introspective lyrics. Congas, harp, shakers, flute, soprano and tenor sax, and tasteful guitar work are found in just the right places.

Sweet as honey!.......2003-12-09
I was hooked!! This guy have a damn good voice! He takes you with him in every song!!! I can't stop listening too the songs! I'm a HUGE DJ fan and I would recomend any of DJ's CD's to anyone!! Just try it, it's realy GOOD!!! DON, keep up the good work and thank you for the music!!
Got that Doors sound to it...........2003-05-06
This CD has alot of great qualities about it. I don't like to make comparisons, but it's got a real cool Doors vibe to it. I think that comes from the rich vocals. The arrangements have a lot to sink your teeth into. And the songwriting...the words and lyrics form a perfect union. It's definitely filled with great images and, most important to me, it has a poetic nature to it, but it never gets artsy, it's always conversational, very human.
Keeps getting better!.......2002-03-03
Not only does the artist, Don Johnson, keep getting better, but this CD keeps getting better the more I listen to it! It's easy to hit "repeat" when the variety of musical styles and the depth of the lyrics delivers something fresh & new with each play.
The production and the band's performance is fantastic! The producer seems to have struck just the right balance of showing off the obvious talent in the band, making the music interesting in and of itself, and supporting/enhancing the lyrics.
Finally, I really admire the courage in the songwriting. Clearly, Don is sharing with his audience some of his own personal path, and when I listen to his music, I feel like he allows me to join him on that for a little while...
Excellent!.......2002-01-14
I recently had the opportunity to experience some new sounds, from Don Johnson. This CD offered such a variety of sounds and emotions. There appears to be a wealth of talent within the members involved in this CD. I found the music very soothing and very inspirational. During the times we are all experiencing I found listening was a great escape. Each time I listen I seem to hear more then I did the previous time. I find myself humming and singing "Slippin through the Shadows" What a great song!! There is so much feeling that comes through the words of Don Johnson. The words have brought joy and tears to me. The voices and all the instruments make each song very rich and very unique. I hope to see more from this artist in the near future. I will be looking.
Song Review.......2001-12-01
I don't who this don johnson guy is, but I like what he is doing...poetic lyrics, powerful imagery and great songwriting.
I heard a few tunes on his website..."Goodbye" a slow blues tune, with haunting lyrics, moaning harmonicas, banjo back in the mix..sounds like the Doors on the someone's back porch.
The other song on the website, is an uptempo ska tune..that just rocks...great rhythm section, great vocals and guitar work...
I listen to alot of music and something tells me this guy can write good songs. Nice to hear some new singer songwriter music that isn't just acoustic guitars...this guy has a full band with him and they seem to perform different styles...
