From Amazon.co.uk
The surprise success story of the "Scousadelic" Liverpool scene, on Tired of Hangin' Around the Zutons trump their debut with an assured, confident collection of songs that accentuate their skill for vintage R&B, white-man soul, and some of the best rowdy sax since the Specials strode the earth. Perhaps in retrospect it's easy to see why this band have struck the public nerve in the way the Coral and the Bandits never quite could. No spooked, surrealist pirate swashbucklers here--the Zutons' songs are grounded in the here and now, numbers like "It's the Little Things We Do", the sound of frontman Dave McCabe weaving an unsteady path from barstool to barstool with dwindling pay-cheque clutched in fist, or "Valerie"--a message to an ex-lover reminiscent of the tattered majesty of the Faces in their garrulous heyday. Much improved is Abi Harding's saxophone work, now capable of sensitive, jazzy undertones ("You've Got a Friend in Me") or sudden bursts of nutty, bandy-legged strut, and McCabe's soulful vocal is neatly bolstered by full-band backing vocals that add an enjoyably cabaret sense of drama to even the twitchiest blast of skiffle-punk. The sound of a band coming on in leaps and bounds. --Louis Pattison

It's official..........2007-06-04
The Zutons are absolutely my new and all-time favorite band. I have yet to hear one of their songs that I didn't love. This album has more of a mainstream sound to it, but for some reason didn't even take off as well as their first. It's the perfect blend of upbeat (Valerie, Hello Conscience) and moody (I Know I'll Never Leave, How Does It Feel), with some of the most quirky and endearing lyrics I've ever heard (Someone Watching Over Me, Why Won't You Give Me Your Love). Anyone who was blown away by their first album and expects no less from their second will not be disappointed. It grows on me more with each play. Absolutely brilliant.

Pop/Rock
The Zutons are back with their sophomore album. If you like the first album then most likely this album is just a reminder of the first one. The sound is the same, maybe a little more rock. Yes, it is still quirky, bluesy, jazzy, and poppy. "Why Won't You Give Me Your Love" is poppy rock and the lyrical melodies are film noir-ish. The song "Valerie" is a nice ballad, while "You've Got A Friend in Me" is soft and soulful with male and female dual vocals. Be kind and lend them your ears.

The Zutons made a real big impression the first time around. They toured with Muse (?) in the USA and were on a TV commercial with that song "Pressure Point." They sort of fit in that goofy pirate Liverpool sound. The second album sounds far more interesting. I feel like the real band is coming out. Songs like "It's The Little Thing We Do" and "Valerie" sound more representative of this great band. "Someone Watching Over Me" is great ballad. You don't hear these songs anymore. I prefer soul singers to English ballads anyway. This is music built around a vocal styling. But the music is again totally interwoven in the Zuton fabric. I think record has a wider appeal than their first outing. I look forward to the new live shows. "Why Don't You Give Me Your Love" is a cool song. This band is young. Expect many good things from them down the road. They have played with the biggest bands in the world. It's time for people to take notice of The Zutons.
I sense a new wave of british bands in the horizon..........2006-11-10
and The Zutons are going to be at the head of the pack. You can't keep good music hidden away from the masses for long. They are an extremely versatile and ecletic band with a number of stylistic approach to music making and performances. These guys (and abi too) are definitely going to make a big splash in America real soon, i foresee that happening sometime in 07.
Not tired of them hanging around........2006-10-29
Zutons are a UK quintet from Liverpool, with a rough psychedelic rock/R&B/ska/folk sound, akin to fellow Brits, The Coral, with a small dash of The Smiths. `Tired of hanging around' is their sophomore disc, and it's already topped the UK albums chart.
In Smiths-like mode, lyric wise is the rather dark but upbeat `Oh Stacey (look what you've done)' with an accompanying morbid but hilarious video.
`Secrets' is a swinging ska tinged song (great horns) and an insistent chorus. Retro rocker `It's the little things we do' has a great guitar riff.
Title track `Tired of hanging around' features great story telling, set to a Paul Weller sound, with great harmonies, something to be found throughout the album. Other great upbeat songs are the jangly, sunny `Valerie', and the clap along `Hello conscience'.
Slowing things down are `Someone's watching over me'which starts off like a lullaby before building up to a nice guitar ballad with dreamy harmonies. `You've got a friend' is a catchy skiffle, and `I know I'll never leave' is an airy ballad with a raw vocal delivery and soothing harmonies.
I think they'll be hanging around for a long time to come...

Put on Stars of the Lid's Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid and bliss out. Unspeakably sublime, the latest effort of Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie, who distance themselves from their hometown Austin, Texas, boogie rock scene, is a minimalist, parametric--and ambient--symphony with a faint rock sensibility that refuses to beg for attention. Tired Sounds is built from formal patterns with layers of melody, texture, atmosphere, and rhythm--but not in the way we normally know it and without the use of drums. Unidentifiable guitars, strings, keyboards, and horns, from soprano to bass in tone, are synthesized with occasional field recordings sounding like audio samples of our universe from the last century and the next galaxy. The work recalls impressionist classical music more than indie rock, and one might mathematically graph the patterns of the six suites that stretch across two CDs and six sides of vinyl with names like "Austin Texas Mental Hospital" and "Requiem for Dying Mothers." Transcendent yet subtle, Tired Sounds will require many listenings to fully grasp, remaining a fascinating puzzle to contemplate and enjoy. File under life-affirming ambient. --Jillian Steinberger

If you're not on the list you can't come in.......2007-03-01
This is music for
people who write poetry, for people who work at home
for people who hate airports or traffic jams or shopping malls or trains
or who love the aftermath of late, late nights
and who dream a lot when they are awake.
It is music for the finest film you never saw,
or for people making plans inside their head
and it is music for people like me.
Gorgeous music.......2006-10-26
A combination of Arvo Part and Peter Namlook, this is a very strange and etheral ambient music that is very easy to like. This one will be in my car for a long while.
Transpersonal Ambient Soundtrack.......2006-08-26
Soft. Lush, Astringent... Sometimes just minimalist enought... Never overly sincere. Not new age fluff. If Michael Mann was struck with a strong satori, and sat looking out over a moss garden, this might be the soundtrack.
Requiem for dying mothers.........2006-08-24
Ambient is a strange genre. Including lot's of stupid new-age albums and pretentious titles etc..BUT there is another side of the genre that for example SOTL represent! Tired Sounds is a massive double cd.Song arragements are extremely minimal. Guitar drones, deep bass signals, and beautifull string sections. When you listen to SOTL,it fills the whole room. The sound is really big but sensitive. There's no computers used on this album ( some found sounds and sound manipulations though) so it's really human. Also the song titles like " lonely people ( are getting lonelier )" or " Austin Texas Mental Hospital " aren't the usual soothing ambient song titles. This is quite melancholy album. If Requiem For Dying Mothers doesen't move you, you're not a human being. Turn off the lights, and take a nice seat with your headphones cause this is MOODY MUSIC !
Just sublime!.......2006-05-09
Make no mistake, this album floats high above most of the pack in the ambient genre! Much of the album is achingly beautiful, from the slightly sombre drone-waves of 'Requiem for Dying Mothers' to the almost subliminal fades of 'Down 3' (which has a similar 'unrequited' feel to it as the best of Boards of Canada) and the stark swelling surges of 'Austin Texas Mental Hospital'. Intricate and engaging inner detail suffuses this album; these are not just drones for the sake of it, there is real emotion being portrayed. Most of it makes my hair stand on end!
All of the tracks deserve repeated attentive listening and yet the two cds make for perfect bedtime background ambience. I would imagine some of this would be gorgeous music to make love to as well!
While much music on the ambient scene follows a formula (albeit sometimes, with giants such as Steve Roach, Robert Rich and Alio Die, an ever evolving formula), this, and the other SOTL albums, reject formulaic frippery and each track offers something completely fresh. There is an organic and sometimes eerily elemental feel to what they offer; here is music that loses nothing on repeated playing. Pity about the lack of inner sleeve though! This carboard packaging so often used by Kranky is poor to say the least, albeit not detracting from the consitently high quality of artists in their catalogue (Pan American, Labradford and Bowery Electric - all more chillout artists than ambient - are well worth dipping into).
If you like to bathe in ambient bliss - BUY THIS ALBUM!

Description
Wanda Sykes has been called "one of the funniest stand up comics" by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America. She won an Emmy in 2003 for her work on Inside the NFL and was showcased for 5 years on HBO's The Chis Rock Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now catch her hilarious stand up skills in this side-splitting program where she serves up comic truth and turns common sense into thought-provoking humor.
Customer Reviews:
Raunchy but Very Funny.......2007-03-09
I saw Wanda Sykes for the first time when she appeared recently on the Ellen Degeneris show. She made me laugh out loud so I ordered this CD to hear more from her. I wasn't disappointed. She is absolutely hysterical. She tells stories completely from a woman's perspective so this may not appeal as much to men. Also, there are sections that are pretty graphic and pretty raunchy but very funny. Not for you if you take offense at foul and sometimes graphic language. All that being said I laughed and laughed and laughed while listening to this CD. Lots of fun!
Funny but crude.......2007-03-08
As with most comedians, one doesn't discover their true nature until they are uncensored. I have enjoyed Ms. Sykes immensely on TV and in movies, but found her language and crude humor to be over the top for my tastes in this album. There are some very funny moments in this presentation, but it's not worth wading through the muck to find them.

This is what gospel is all about.......2006-03-24
James Cleveland sings from deep within his soul, backed up by a passionate group of worshippers. His anthem "I Don't Feel Noways Tired" is a sermon in itself, "He didn't bring me this far just to leave me...!" and should be repeated by every Christian. Those times of discouragement would be put into perspective. The whole CD has songs with a cleaner, simpler feel of traditional gospel, the kind I used to hear in the storefront churches in early 50's Brooklyn, no over-synthed productions, just great piano, organ, drums, and conviction.
JAMES IS THE BEST.......2005-10-25
I NEVER THOUGHT THAT HIS MUSIC WOULD BLESS MY LIFE LIKE THIS BEFORE. I LOVE THIS CD. THIS IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD. JAMES IS THE BEST GOSPEL SINGER IN THE UNIVERSE. THIS CD IS JUST AWESOME. WHEN EVER YOU HEAR A JAMES CLEVELAND SONG YOU GET BLESS AND THIS CD DOES THAT FOR ME. I LOVE IT. IF YOU DONT HAVE THIS ONE YOU NEED TO GET. ITS JAMES CLEVELAND SO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GETTING YOUR MONEYS WORTH.
Brings Back Memories.......2005-02-03
My father has been gone now for over 20 years. There are times when I find it hard to connect with his memory. When I listen to James Cleveland it makes it seem like we were together just yesterday. If one can find a better gospel song than Victory Shall Be Mine please let me know because I haven't heard it yet. My ususal taste for music leans toward Beethoven but James Cleveland stirs the soul. You cannot go wrong in purchasing any music by this man.
I DON'T FEEL NO WAYS TIRED.......2002-04-23
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
THE CD IS WONDERFUL. I LOVE THE TRACK NUMBER 2, IT'S WONDERFUL TO HEAR MUSIC THAT HAS A MESSAGES WORTH HEARING.
A LEGEND PRESENTS HIS PROTEGE.......2000-07-19
The late Reverend James Cleveland not exercise his gift of musical talent, but he allowed the HOLY SPIRIT to used his gift in Reverend Cleveland`s presentation of Minister Keith Pringle when singing the title song "I Don`t Feel No Way's Tired" You can not listen to this cd and keep still. It will move you out of your seat. Also, included on this cd Reverend Cleveland and Minister Pringle united on the hit song "Victory Shall Be Mind". Purchasing this cd will be no mistake. Whether you are music lover or not listening to this recording will be a learning experience. Pastor J.C. Wade and the Salem Mass Choir of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Omaha,Nebraska did an outstanding job singing background in this live recording taped at Salem Missionary Baptist Church in that city.I Know you will enjoy this recording.

Customer Reviews:
all encompassing best of.......2006-03-10
this best of really gives the listener all they need to hear to know that this band probably was the most underrated punk/powerpop band of its time.on a parr with ramones releases of the day.in fact, they played with the ramones at a gig or two at the world renown punk club cbgb's in nyc.without a doubt, the best band to come out of toronto canada in the mid to late seventies.
It's great.......2002-12-07
I have listened to the Diodes since their first album. If my house was burning, and I could save either this album or my family....
I would grab the album. sorry, kids.
Buy this album.......1999-10-07
Anyone with an interest in late 70's punk should pick up this album. The Diodes were hugely influencial to the Toronto punk scene, but have generally been overlooked. This compilation may change that, as this 25 song collection is nothing short of punk brilliance. The lyrics are fairly intellegent, the songs are well- written, and the performances are hard and tight. A very good album, from a very good and underappreciated band.
Experience the raw roots of punk rock!.......1999-05-04
Listening to this disk took me back to the live performances of the Diodes that I witnessed in Welland, Ontario, Canada in 1979 and again in London, Ontario, Canada in 1981. The force of Paul Robinson's vocals in Red Rubber Ball, Child Star and Shapes of Things to Come is balanced by the melodies of Tired of Waking Up Tired, Teenage Nation, Photographs From Mars, Jenny's In A Sleep World and Weekend. The pounding beat of John Catto's guitar and Ian Mackay's bass provide the perfect background for Robinson's unpolished but forceful delivery of the lyrics. The raw energy of this group represents the early roots of punk, when making simple, great music was more important than the physical uniqueness of the musicians.
Excellent.......1999-03-13
This music is a throw back to the early roots of the punk rock and new vave movement. Raw music sung with a passion at the dawn of the disco age. A must in anyones collection of the music of the mid-70's. I used to own this on 8-track and have searched for the CD for the last 10 years. Unfortunatley these guys broke up before their music reached the recognition other artist of there time achieved. Great music from a time when music was testing the boundaries.

beautiful patriotic music.......2003-08-28
This is an excellent CD. The music, both voices and orchestra, is superb. The content of the lyrics is inspiring. It reminds me of so many reasons I'm proud to be American.
All new recordings, with a strong patriotric theme.......2003-07-16
Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:
1 America the Beautiful

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

Album Description
Limited edition Japanese pressing includes a bonus DVD (NTSC/Region 2) featuring The Making Of & 'Why Wont You Give Me Your Love' video, and the bonus tracks 'I Will Be Your Pockets' & 'Are We Friends Or Lovers?' The Zutons make their long awaited return with the release of 'Tired Of Hanging Around', the follow-up to 'Who Killed The Zutons', which spawned five Top 40 singles. Produced by Stephen Street (Kaiser Chiefs/ The Smiths), 'Tired Of Hanging Around' finds the cosmic scousers developing their schizophrenic, 60s influenced beat-pop into a masterstroke of indie-eccentricity, blending all the quirky flourishes that accentuated their debut with a tighter and more concentrated agenda. Deltasonic. 2006.

Customer Reviews:
Fine Contribution.......2006-09-03
A fine compilation of Vaughn Williams' songs. Sung very well indeed by Johnson and Keenlyside with excellent accompaniment. This CD really shows the full range of Vaughn Williams vocal writing. This whole series is an admirable undertaking.
lovely performance.......2006-03-24
This is a very nice compilation of Vaughan Williams' vocal music, some of which is not easy to find on CD. The performers do an excellent job. Nice voices, and the music is sensitively sung. A really good value.
Wonderful performances of stirring music.......2003-04-27
This CD contains some of Vaughan Williams' best vocal music. The singers are superb and the accompanist is sensitive.
I love the whole CD, but adore
Searching For Lambs, which is a touching love song, set for violin and tenor duet
Silent Noon
It Was A Lover and His Lass
Antiphon, the last song in the set of Five Mystical Songs. It is a great song of faith, set by an infamous agnostic. The Church would be the poorer without Vaughan Williams wonderful hymns and arrangements of hymns. [I also recommend Vaughan Williams' Hymnal and Pilgrm's Progress.].
I bought this set to hear On Wenlock Edge and am not disappointed. It is a great song cycle.
By the way, this bargain-priced CD includes all the song texts.
One of my favourite vocal CDs. Highly recommended.
