Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

This girl, i don't talk to anymore, left this album in my car when it came out. I let a friend borrow it and it came back ruined. I didn't know the name of the album or where to find it. This CD is one of the hottest, with Tupac lyrics over beats like: hold up by dr. dre, if u dont give a damn gone throw it up by young bloodz, on my block by scarface, and much much more... the best thing is it sounds like the beats were made just for those lyrics by Pac!

I have been a tupac fan since i was 15 and i will tell you this is a great jumpoff for a novice listener, and a great retrospective for a fan. You can say tupac was the best rapper ever give that title to a mortal like big or jay-z. Tupac was a poet of our times, even the hardest thug has to feel a not in his throught when hearing him flow on the the baby don't cry remix about a girl being atacked. This mixtape does justice to his quotes and should have been the soundtract to the movie instead of the cliche'ed one that was released. After seeing the movie and hearing this tape, if you are open minded, you will see why so many think he was assasinated and not just shot in a drive by. This man could very well have settled down and became a central figure in American politics. If ron regan can be president then Pac could have been a national figure easily. This album is a great place to start.

good idea. .......2006-04-06

i, too looked for this after reading what chris rock said about it in rolling stone. a few songs are okay, a few songs are really weak (as weak as a pac tune can get), and a few are just filler.

however, a few stand out. such as "hold up," an entire song based upon nate dogg's line in dre's "the next episode." it has this really tight beat that sounds kinda like old old snoop dogg. before he dropped the doggy. if you're blazin' phillies, its good stuff to cruise to. additionally, "fight music" is a strong track, with pac flowing over "hate me now" by puffy and nas. it's really good because the beat is prolific, powerful, and quite emotional. the particular pac lines they choose are equally as powerful, giving one the feeling as though this is the original. "me against the world" is pac over dre's "still d.r.e." beat, which is pretty cool (except for the female chorus vocals). i mean, that's a killer beat no matter who rhymes over it. i like dre's much better, but this was a good mix. "thug in me" sounds kinda like something pac would've done when he was alive. it's a decent filler track, i suppose.

the best thing this cd has to offer is tupac's personal opinion that starts the track "revolution."

he says "this country was built on gangs. you know. i think this country still is run on gangs. republicans. democrats. the police department. the fbi. the c.i.--those are gangs. you know what i mean? the correctional officers. i had a correctional officer tell me straight up 'we're the biggest gang in new york state.' straight up."

hearing these words really made me remember how great tupac was. he had a lot of strong messages that unfortunately too little of his audience could actually hear. if you're a tupac fan and have most of his cds, then yeah. add this one to your collection because you'll probably dig it. if you're not a diehard pac fan, then maybe just consider it for fact that its pac with hot new beats. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. but definitely get this before you shell out $XX for Death Row's "nu-mixx klassics." this one is better.

I decided to pick this up after hearing that Chris Rock had put it in his top 25 Rap CD's of all time...
This mixtape does make you relise something though. All of Pac's beats on his old songs seem tailered for him, cause with his style of rapping, you cant just put any beat in, even the hottest beats may sound wack with him...
I own every pac album from when he was alive, and his greatest hits, and there was still some verses in here I hadnt hered, so it is a good buy... All the tracks flow together, so it sounds like a real mixtape. The best song is the second one, Revolution Feturing Busta Rhymes, over that one really hot P. Diddy beat ( Forgot the name ) And what is cool is that verse is from Military Minds, and even though I found the original song wack, they make it really really good, even better than some of his greatest hits... The Dj's did a good job... Bottom line, if you are a Pac fan get this! I will soon be getting the B.I.G. one too...

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

This is a great CD. Ralph doesn't disappoint, and my son just loves it. It beats a lot of the other kids stuff I endure on the commute in to school and work. This is a good one to add to your Ralph collection or a worthy one to start getting to know Ralph's World.

I catch my partner singing these songs in the shower too. Witty,funny, hummable, memorable. This CD went on 3 ten-hour drives within the span of four months and I still liked it. My four year old particularly likes this CD because she gets the humor and cleverness of it but the 22 month old hums along too.

Eno first emerged as a member of Roxy Music, where the synthesizer player electronically "treated" the band's other instruments, the first indicator that the recording process was itself Eno's chosen instrument. His subsequent career has been one of the most provocative in pop, for not only did he devote himself to such obscure pursuits as "ambient music," but he produced vital albums by David Bowie, Talking Heads, and U2. Eno made a handful of relatively conventional pop albums in the 1970s, and Another Green World ranks with Before and After Science as his most enduring solo work. Groundbreaking..........2007-07-26

Brian Eno seemed so nerdy and techno and so unlikely as a member of Roxy Music in support of tuxedo clad Brian Ferry. Then he stepped out on his own with releases like this and "Taking Tiger Mountain." For those who know him later as the composer of minimalist instrumental material, this will come as a surprise. "I'll Come Running," for example, is pop tune heaven. Great marriage of the dawning technology of the age and plain old hummable pop music.

Another Great Work.......2007-05-03

Where Eno's debut album was kind of a rough DIY affair with mixing that was often rather muddy (loved it just the same) and "Taking Tiger Mountain" showed growth in the areas of song writing, performance and production (loved it even more than "Jets"),"Another Green World" is a giant step forward in the areas I just mentioned. Impossibly mature and focused, B.E. really hit his stride with this one. Sprinkled among the songs with vocals (I'd call these conventional pop songs but they're really anything but that), we also get a taste of the kind of music Eno would become renowned for- ambient.

It begins with "Sky Saw", seemingly an instrumental then in the last minute or so Brian sings a few surrealist lines. It features viola work by John Cale and damn if that thing doesn't sound just like you'd imagine a 'sky saw' would sound like. Brilliant. A short and sweet instrumental "Over Fire Island" follows. One of Eno's most beautiful and evocative songs "St. Elmo's Fire" comes next with some splendidly tight, jagged, slightly distorted guitar provided by Mr. Fripp. The lyrics to this song are some of Eno's finest poetry. Two instrumentals, "In Dark Trees" and "The Big Ship" come next. "Trees" features some nice echo-y percussion along with its dark melody. "Ship" features more of Fripp's wonderfully expressive guitar. "I'll Come Running" is one of the standout tracks here. For some reason, I've always felt that this might be a parody/homage? of his ex-band mate Bryan Ferry's material. The 'oh oh oh oh oh oh's' sound very Ferry to these ears. Following "Running" is another cluster of short and lovely instrumentals,"Another Green World", "Sombre Reptiles" and "Little Fishes", all of them very appropriately named. The excellent vocal piece "Golden Hours" explores the slippery notion of time and how we relate to it. I love the last line "putting grapes back on the vine". "Becalmed" is another sweet instrumental with a title that perfectly describes the feeling of the piece. This one is a bit more New Age, a bit less ambient than most of the instrumentals on the disc. The instrumental "Zawinul/Lava" was inspired by ex-Weather Report co-founder/keyboardist Joe Zawinul and the song magically evokes flowing hot lava. The final vocal track "Everything Merges With The Night" is heavenly. The music and lyrics are subtle and fine. "Spirits Drifting" closes the album in ambient bliss.

If you like what you hear on this CD, you might also enjoy David Bowie's "Low" which Mr. Eno contributed a great deal to.

This is pompous, bubble-boy music. Can you please tell me who listens to this drivel? Funeral directors? I feel like I'm stranded in my ski suit in the middle of Death Valley. When I lived in Tampa, I happened by this shack on the side of the road with a big eye painted on one side. It was called the "Seeing Eye Museum" or something and when I went in, it was kind of like a hare krishna version of the gas station in "House of 1,000 Corpses." It was this combo folk art gallery/gift store and in the back there was this meditation area where everybody stared at each other's third eyes ... it was all about endless reincarnation and repetition, really quite creepy. Anyway, this is the kind of music they had spinning over their sound system. I felt like I was starting to have a bad trip. Man, I remember this cat back in my salad days who was studying to be a dolphin translater and he wrote a book with a chapter dedicated to the pleasure of interspecies intercourse. Guess what he had playing in his car when the cops pulled him over for breaking into an aquatic park ...

Like many of her contemporaries, folk-rocker Dar Williams seems weary of her road-tested, pared-down, fan-pleasing musical formula. Her last outing, 1997's End of the Summer, gave hints of her interest in a more instrumentally rich, highly produced, pop-leaning sound, but still maintained an earthy folk sensibility. On 2000's The Green World, Williams's guileless humor and stripped acoustic sound are replaced by shimmering electric guitars, heavy reverb, compact lyrics, and complex, layered percussion. Her steadfast fans may cry "sellout" initially, but by the third listen, they'll begin to sympathize. Yes, this new, polished sound seems to hang heavy on tracks such as "Calling the Moon," where an invasive Hammond organ and overbearing guitar nearly drown out the reedy plea of Williams's heartbreaking voice. And "After All," a wrenchingly introspective rumination, begs to be left in subtle simplicity. But songs like the mild-yet-infectious jaunt "Another Mystery," the passionately insistent lament "And a God Descended," and the gentle rock reverie "Playing to the Firmament" bear their lavish arrangements with grace and pride. --Sally Weinbach

My least favorite, but Dar still rocks.......2007-01-14

"The Green World" is one of my least favorite Dar Williams CDs. It's not as upbeat or interesting. The best song on the CD is "After All" about growing up. "It Happens Everyday" is about watching the neighborhood children's lives. The rest of the songs on this album are ok, but not worth writing about.

I sat down in front of PBS on a Friday night and Dar Williams appeared on Soundstage. I listened to four songs and knew I was listening to someone extremely special. I purchased " The Green World" the next day and listened to it all day.The next day I bought her new album, "The Beauty of the Rain."
Haunting melodies and harmonies. Intelligent,heartfelt lyrics. It took me back 30 years to a dorm room with a copy of Joni Mitchell's "Blue" spinning over and over into the night as we fell asleep. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this album.
It will absolutely become one of your favorites. I'm only upset that I am just now (Nov 2004)finding out about this artist.

Not her best........2003-07-08

I adore Dar Williams. I find her music to be introspective, thoughtful, lyrically beautiful and true-to-life, and musically sound.

This is what I expected from The Green World, but sadly, I was a bit disappointed with this album. While many of the songs (After All, Calling the Moon, We Learned the Sea) are simply beautiful and have excellent lyrics, other songs just don't suit my tastes. This album is very different from Dar's earlier work; it definitely has a more "country" sound to it, which I don't care for. I enjoyed Dar as the folk singer/songwriter she was in the early days, and this CD seems to have lost some of that integrity and eagerness of the earlier albums.

Nevertheless, it's not a terrible CD by any stretch of the imagination, and in the right mood, I do enjoy it. However, it is much different from Dar's other albums, and the potential listener should be aware of this before purchasing this CD.

The Green World was not an album I initially liked much at first, but after a couple years of listening to these songs along side Dar's other albums, I feel that this is her most (with the possible exception of "Mortal City") consistantly good album . There truly is not a bad song on this album. It just took me a while to catch on.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Who else, but Buti.......2003-01-18

Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!
