This album avoids the overly-earnest bent of so many of today's singer-songwriters...

Product Description
Welcome to My Century is Bob Hillman's second collection of literate, melodic songs.

Above all, he tries to say something interesting about the way we live now. For example, the works of Tolstoy provide the backdrop for a song about a romantic evening in New York City ("Tolstoy"), and geographical and political facts about Greenland inform the story of the disintegration of a relationship ("Greenland"). In "Bolted Down," he turns an absurdist's eye on the neuroses of city dwellers.

WTMC was produced by Tommy West in his barn/studio, Somewhere in New Jersey, and features some of New York City's finest musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

5 out of 5 stars Vaughan Williams --- off the beaten path.......2006-05-16

This ample collection demonstrates that Richard Hickox has to be considered one the leading Vaughan Williams interpreters in the post-Boult world, as he puts forth sparkling performances of many little-known works, including the Concerto accademico and the film music "49th Parallel," among others. Quite a number of these compositions are rarely recorded, if ever; it is quite nice to see them in a very affordable collection such as this.

Like another reviewer, I find the affected style of Stephen Roberts to be distracting & annoying. Also, the orchestral version of the Serenade to Music is a pale imitation of the original version...if you have heard Boult's recording, you will understand that the original version is far superior. It is a shame that it wasn't included here.

These are mere quibbles, however. For a dirt-cheap price, you have the opportunity to fill in the gaps of your Vaughan Williams collection. There is no good reason to pass on this. If you stumble across these CDs (I found mine at BestBuy of all places), grab it.

4 out of 5 stars Hickox Conducts Vaughan Williams.......2000-09-05

This is a most-welcome CD release, especially since it contains a number of pieces not available on CD until now. It's also excellent value--two discs for the price of one.

Of particular interest is the curious ballet Old King Cole, written for an outdoor performance at Trinity College, Cambridge. Essentially a light-hearted piece, the music is not of the highest level of inspiration overall, but there are moments of real beauty that make up for any shortcomings in the score. For the convinced Vaughan Williams admirer, this is a must-have (RVW himself recorded some of this music; this early mono recording has been released on CD by Pearl records.)

Other items of similar interest include the Prelude On An Old Carol Tune, written for a BBC radio play, and a pair of hard-to-find marches. The instrumental version of the Serenade to Music is a gorgeous novelty, but no substitute for the original version for 16 vocalists and orchestra.

Also included are two important concertos; one for oboe and one for violin, both with string accompaniment. The violin concerto receives the better performance. The rendering of the oboe concerto suffers from too-slow tempi, particularly in the final movement. Neither are major works, but are nonetheless full of interest and deserve to be better known.

Some well-known RVW works are included, among them The Lark Ascending and Five Mystical Songs. The latter is marred by the soloist's excessive tendency to roll his r's--an almost comical sound sometimes. RVW was known to have disliked this sort of affectation.

Overall a valuable collection for anyone interested in this composer. The recordings were made in the 1980s.

3 out of 5 stars Skip this Savitri.......2005-09-24

Holst was a great devotee of Hind mythology, and his chamber opera Savitri was the best thing he did in that vein. I've loved it for forty years, and the classic performance under Imogen Holst, the composer's daughter, is out on London/Decca with the amazing Janet Baker and Robert Tear. compared to it, this performance is clumsy and awkwardly sung by the female lead.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected treasure.......2001-04-21

Like most people, I only knew Holst from 'The Planets'. Wanting to expand my horizons, I bought this disc on a whim. What a suprise! Savitri, a half-hour chamber opera, is exotic, highly original and hauntingly beautiful. The performance is superb. All fans of late-romantic exotica should give it a try

5 out of 5 stars An AntiWar Masterpiece.......2002-08-26

Tippett and Britten were composers who, though very different in temperment and style, had many interests in common. One of the overiding concerns with both composers was the moral response to war and it's horrors. For Britten, the War Requiem and Owen Wingrave are his very clear moral response to war. Tippet, in his fashion is much more psychological in this work, which must rank as one of Tippett's best and most powerful operatic statements.

King Priam is a dramatic tour de force. Based on the Illiad as seen through the eyes of the Trojans, the work is a meditation on the inevitability of fate in mass movements like war. Priam, though illdisposed to the war, is unable to stop or control it as it takes both of his sons, his kingdom and then finally his own life. He emerges as a figure of moral power and grandeur, but ultimately as impotent and tragic. This libretto is one of Tippett's best and most clear statements.

Musically, Priam is a powerhouse, inaugurating Tippett's second major style. Priam is constructed in a mosaic style. Small chamber groups of instruments with defined musical content are assigned to characters. As the work develops, these small groups combine and recombine in a shifting maze of patterns that seems to endlessly reinvent itself. The music starts out as largely tonal, but the tonality breaks down as Fate takes over and dooms the Trojans. The work is never serial, but it takes an almost Bergian view of tonality, sometimes more and sometimes less tonal as the dramatic situation warrants. The vocal lines are mostly declaimed, but with moments of lyricism that are unfogettable, such as Priam's first aria, A Father and a King, or the beautiful scene between Priam and Achilles in the third act. And Achilles war cry at the end of act two is bone chilling!

This is a great performance of this piece. Many of the singers originated the roles and sing them with power and authority. Phillip Langridge is terrific as Paris. Robert Tear is a marvelous Achilles. David Aetherton conducts this difficult score with precision and a fine ear for balances.

This is a profound opera by a major 20th century composer. If you like Britten, you should own this as well. It is increasingly looking like Tippett's masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Visceral power & beauty coupled with stunning performances!!.......2001-06-13

I bought this on a whim, having heard only the slightest bit of Tippett's orchestral music and none of his operas. I expected the music to be "difficult," and the performances stilted, but I was oh so wrong! Yes, this is definitely late 20th century music -- often dissonant and atonal, but it is utterly beautiful, emotionally moving music. I'm a huge fan of Britten's operas, and judge all modern opera composers by his standards, and (pardon my gushing) Sir Michael is more than up to the challenge. First of all, he takes on the daunting task of adapting the Iliad into a opera libretto and manages to compress the drama beautifully into 3 acts that tell the story imaginatively, comprehensively and in a wholly theatrical manner. Second, he uses the music to heighten the sense of character by giving each persona a unique style of vocal line and orchestration (yes, this is what all composers do, or try to do, but Tippett succeeds in a way few others do). Several of the characters are accompanied by solo instruments (bravura parts of concerto-like difficulty performed brilliantly) -- Achilles by solo guitar, Helen by solo cello, King Priam by violin, etc. Three characters form a sort of Greek chorus who comment on the action and bring a sense of questioning morality to the whole.

All of the solo singers are astutely cast and sing with amazing power. Standouts (difficult to single out any of them, they're all so brilliant): Phillip Langridge is first-rate as Paris, Priam's second son -- he sings with enormous power and pathos at the same time. Felicity Palmer is velvety sex personified as Helen. Norman Bailey as Priam has a raw edginess to his sound, which lends such a sense of reality to a man pushed to the edge by fate and his warring sons. The London Philharmonia gives a virtuoso performance, led sensitively and intelligently by David Atherton. The digital sound is crystal clear and beautifully engineered: the sound couldn't be better live at the Met! Take a chance on this one, and enter into an operatic world you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most easily grasped of modern operas.......1999-02-27

Contemporary opera was never the same after King Priam, a suitable irony given that the Opera is perhaps the most easily grasped by the listening public of the 5 Tippett Operas. Even so, the "crisis of King Prian" stylistically and emotionally is the germ-seed for the eccentrism yet to come in "The Knot Garden", "The Ice Break", and "New Year". Tippett's theme is the futility of choice and the nature of the impact of choice on humanity in the micro-sphere of the individual and the macro-sphere of the community and history. Tippett's unusual yet perfectly conceived recasting of the Iliad from the Trojan persepctive does more than summarize plot, but pauses to comment on the universal human potential implicit therein. A must-buy for Tippett fans and for anyone who likes opera, Greek Mythology, classical music, or a good story.

    Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this guy famous?.......2003-12-22

When I saw Bob Hillman open for Suzanne Vega, he was just another opening act. I bought this CD that night, and now his songs have become part of my life. With the lyrical flair of Sting mixed with power-pop arrangements that remind me of the Gin Blossoms or the Wallflowers, Hillman's music has what it takes to make it. While most of the songs deal with your typical pop song topics - love, loss - he tweaks them in unique ways. You've got respect a song writer who compares his lover's coldness with ice caps of Greenland or who explains an unexpected love encounter as if it were a plot in a Tolstoy novel. 'Games,' 'Anywhere', and the title track are all strong pieces. This guy should be famous. Why isn't he?

5 out of 5 stars bob hillman: round two.......2002-12-14

bob hillman returns with welcome to my century. this is bob's second effort and it rocks. bolted down brings down the house every time he plays it live. and ask him how he came up with the lyrics for greenland. his answer is why he is a great songwriter. he is clever, synical, sarcastic, sincere, honest. hillman is a true musical artist who doesn't sacrifice his attitude or belief for the big time. although given the chance, he may think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Tolstoy Would Approve.......2002-06-08

Bob Hillman's "Welcome To My Century" reminds us that not much has changed from one generation to the next, Tolstoy's themes hold:
"Like epic poetry, old folk songs
    Gargantuan themes, impossibly long
War and peace and right and wrong."

But you don't have to read Russian novels to recognize a great writer when you hear one. That Hillman writes songs gives the genre a much appreciated and welcomed taste of genius. He writes of ordinary fears (going bald) and self consciousness (asking a movie star for and autograph). He writes about addictions and rock & roll stars (wanna be's & has beens), a girl from Iowa, an alcoholic dad.Ordinary themes, heart breakingly strong. Musically, it all fits, from his smoky rugged voice to the haunting acoustic guitar strings.

I love this album; have played it over & over again; one of those perfect soundtracks that resonate with where I currently find myself. Don't miss Bob Hillman! If you do, "too bad for you"!

5 out of 5 stars Bob Hillman is excellent! Smart, Funny and Great listening........2002-05-02

I highly recommend "Welcome To My Century". Mr. Hillman is part of the New York folk scene that includes such artists as Jack Hardy and Suzanne Vega. While he has not gotten as much press as his peers, his music is great. What sets his music style apart from his serious pop/folk peers today is his use of both large doses of humor and charming self-deprecation in his songs. This low-key attitude is especially endearing when compared to his "movie star" looks.

In a song such as "Greenland", you will find him traveling to the icy North in this humorous tune that spins several factoids about the country while slyly commenting on a failed relationship. Download the song for yourself and see. On the opposite end of the spectrum is his critique of "Las Vegas" which laments the artificial nature of casinos and comments on the odd cast of characters you might find there. What you will find in all of his songs is an intelligent point of view combined with a kick[ing] melody. He is really fun to listen to -if you have a stressful commute you must consider playing his music as a welcome stress-buster! Do yourself a favor and buy this album. If you enjoy it as much as I did, check out his first effort: "Playing God".
