5 out of 5 stars Exquisite harmony...A desert island album.......2004-01-05

Quite simply: I would trade my entire music collection for a 10 second scrap from The Journeymen. Their harmonies give me a lump in my throat and bring tears to my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Long-forgotten gems once again available.......2003-04-30

Of the three Journeymen, Dick Weissman-- perhaps the group's finest musician-- is the least known. John Phillips (later of The Mamas & The Papas, of course) and Scott McKenzie ("Are you going to San Francisco?") complete a long-forgotten folk trio that, for a brief period, was the best of the best.

Their harmonies are as good as (or better) than The Brandywine Singers, and, like The Limeliters, they can make three voices sound like so many more. Like The Kingston Trio and The Highwaymen, they display a diversity and an honesty that is true and impressive. In their own way, they are more innovative than groups like Peter, Paul, & Mary; The New Christy Minstrels; and The Brothers Four, while retaining those groups' feel for what a crowd might like. But no folk group ever combined all these qualities at such high levels of excellence into one entity.

There are so many gems here: "I May Be Right", "Fennario", "Make Me a Pallet", "Cotton Mill Girls", and "Bay of Mexico" (what a gorgeous sound on that one) are my personal favorites, but they are all terrific.

Unfortunately, the folk gods did not bless The Journeymen with commercial success, but John Phillips (who wrote "San Francisco" for McKenzie, and also named his daughter after his friend Scott) proved that, given the right set of circumstances, he certainly had the knack. In The Mamas & The Papas, you can hear the echoes of those brilliant Journeymen harmonies, transformed into something new, different, and exciting.

Anyone who loves folk music, especially folk groups, has to own this one. I only wish that more of The Journeymen's songs were available, as this CD is but a selection from their albums. Gems all, but there may be others out there...

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Journeymen.......2003-02-12

This album sounds like the Journeymen I listened to in the dorm in the mid-60's. I loved the clean sound and great arrangements by the trio.
Toward the end of the CD you can hear John Phillip's arrangements mature toward those of the Mamas and the Papas, the group John founded. Only one song was missed (that I can remember)---One Quick Martini (answer to Scotch and Soda by the KT).

    5 out of 5 stars A folk treasure!.......2002-06-15

I cannot say enough good things about this album! The song selection (standard folk fare from the 1960's) is great, and the way in which the voices blend together to create one voice singing is incredible. (Their vocal styling is very relaxed when compared to the Kingston Trio - who often seem to be trying to sing over one another.) This is a "must have" item for fans of 1960's folk music or of harmony.

P.S.: John Phillips (Mamas and the Papas) and Scott McKenzie ("If You're Goin' to San Francisco..." comprise 2/3 of this trio!

5 out of 5 stars Best Journeymen album...........2007-07-03

This is the one you want. Still raw, you can feel every line and snare and subliminal interjection. There hasn't been another album in hip hop that compares with this. this one stands on an island its own. Buy this CD. Well worth the 70 minute trip youll embark on. Speaking from their hearts. Thank you Lucky, Thank you Sunspot.

5 out of 5 stars I want to start by saying this isnt for everyone.......2002-11-01

The Mystik Journeymen are members of the world-greatest Living Legends crew. Lucky.I.Am or PSC(i prefer luckyiam) and Sunspot Jonz bring intelligent lyrics with slower beats than the soldout rappers(dont confuse mainstream and soldout because there is a world of difference). These guys are anti-Consumerism and truly love making the music they do and I give so much props to both of them for that. ...

4 out of 5 stars Feeling the MCs, but FREAKIN' SPEED UP THE BEATS!.......2000-01-02

The duo is on point lyrically again as usual, but the production is TOO SLOW. Speed up the drums SOMEWHAT at least... MY GOD. But I can't complain too much, because the messages are ever so clear on this quaint album. PEACE!

3 out of 5 stars A good effort, but not classic Living Legends Material.......1999-07-27

Lets not get carried away. Just because This is their second record (Worldwide Underground being the first) to be widely available, these cats have been around for years, and have recorded material far better. If you really want to see what the Living Legends have to offer, check their web site.

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEAT!!!! 1999's finest.......1999-07-21

Yo, the Mystik Journeymen are taking over, worldwide as always. If you haven't caught a show, you haven't experienced live hip-hop. They rock every crowd they step in front of. BLACK SANDS IS THE BEAT, believe it, the best LP of 99 by far! MCing and beat-freaking at TOP NOTCH LEVEL.

    5 out of 5 stars CD / LP confusion.......2007-03-09

This item was labeled on the Amazon site as CD. After I initiated the purchase
the seller ssent a message cofirming the purchase and warning that the item was
an LP and not a CD. He pointed out that the Amazon site does not provide a way to indicate
that an album is an LP / "Vinal" except in the sellers info.
He agreed to refund and cancel the order.
No fault to the seller, but Amazon should represent the product more accurately.

4 out of 5 stars Good Album You Need This.......2004-10-21

I was really feeling this album. I think that they have some good features and some great tracks as well. I'm really feeling the guy with the high pitch voice, and the other guy is cool as well. The songs that stand out to me are Rap Life, Hip-Hop, and a couple others. The great thing about this album was seeing Cool Nutz from Portland on there, as well as Equipto. I would go ahead and grab this album and add it to your collection. I heard Potluck on the Collabos album from Cool Nutz and it sparked my interest.

3 out of 5 stars Bland Lyrics, Redundant Beats.......2004-10-20

After listening to Harvest Time I realised that I had wasted my Money. In general the main MC had a sick flow but fell through lyrically. Many of the beats sounded the same and some samples were annoying. There were a couple decent Tracks. Say What Ya Wanna, Hip Hop, U Dont Even Know me, and What Am I

    4. A redundant beat, but good sampling - 3/5

    13. Fat beat and L Legends ( A Killer Combo) - 5/5

5 out of 5 stars true Hip Hop.......2004-06-10

this is probably the best mystic journeymen cd ever. the only thing is that it has too many skits, the skits are tight no doubt but people wanna listen to more tracks. the sickest track on this has to be right now produced by grouch it has one of the illest beats i've ever heard also the firefly rebellion is a sick track. cop this cd. eventhough it only has a few actual songs, it still sick...

4 out of 5 stars STRONG BUT NOT THEIR BEST.......1999-09-27

This is, after all, an EP/mix tape affair, not a full-length album, showcasing recording from their world tour....but it's still the Mystik Journeymen, which means it's some of the most innovative and enjoyable stuff on the market....support the underground and do yourself a favor, buy this album and The Black Sands Ov Eternia. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Mystik Journeymen One Of Tha Bay Areas Best UndaGround.......1999-09-16

Mystik Journeymen represent underground as much as santa claus represents christmas on this album, they are against comercialization,an thats whut tha real underground artist are all about, keeping it on tha DL,this album rawks, from MJM's dope flows to dankalicouse beats, every Living Legends junkie has ta buy this album, remember to keep it on tha DL.

    3 out of 5 stars Only 7 actual songs!!!!!.......1999-07-31

Don't be mistaken, this 17 track record is not an album! It's an EP! Out of the 17 tracks, only 7 are real songs (they are good songs however). The remaining 10 tracks are all interludes and a few instrumentals. If you want a more complete album by the MJ's, check out their newest LP "Black Sands Ov Eternia".

4 out of 5 stars Hip Hip in its purest form.......1999-07-22

I won't front and say that I've been a fan of MJM since the beginning, but ever since I heard these 2 fellas bless the mic a year ago, I've been hooked. MJM definatley won't appeal to everyone. Only fans of underground hip hop will like this album. The lyrics are conscious and meaningful and the beats are stripped down, yet uniquely absract. While "Worldwide Underground" is arguably not their best album, it still will please 'backpackers' and nearly anyone with an ear for real hip-hop. My only real complaint about the album is all of the interludes included. I've never liked interludes on an album (except for De La Soul's), so I'm not saying that MJM's interludes are wack, I'm saying interludes are wack in general and usually end up as filler, or in other words, a reason for me to keep my finger hovering over the fast forward button.

5 out of 5 stars One quick martini and I'll be on my way..........2007-07-23

I have had a song in my head for far too many years, my sister had this folk album that she played all the time and I came to love one of the songs, years have passed and she couldn't remember which of her albums it was...I thought it was The Modern Folk Quartet and they were out of print until recently and so I ordered a MFQ recording but that illusive sone was not on there...sounded like "Scotch and Soda", the Kingston Trio recording, but this was a prettier ballad.Last month I order The Journeymen, because I loved John Phillips and Scott McKenzie went on to the MFQ and to record... "Come to San Francisco and wear some flowers in your hair". And there on this terrific recording from 1963 is the long sought after and still great ballad; "One Quick Martini". Eureka! The Journeymen were just one of a truckload of young men and women who performed while Folk was the rage...Chad Mitchell Trio, Brothers Four, Roof Top Singers The Terriers et al., but The Journeymen stood out for they had a great blend of voices and songwriting talent and it shows in this recording; New Directions in Folk Music. Their reditions of "San Francisco Bay" and "Ja Da" capture that rollicking spirit that the New Directions were headed toward. I listen to this album often now and I am happy to be reunited with , One Quick Martini...and now I'll be on my way.

4 out of 5 stars 1963 Folk Set Still Sounds Super.......2004-11-17

"New Directions in Folk Music" came out in 1963 with John Phillips before the Mamas & the Papas and Scott McKenzie before "If you're going to San Francisco be sure to wear some flowers in your hair." The Journeymen's blend of voices is still moving 4+ decades after the original Capitol release. Collectors' Choice has done a good job of technically reproducing the disc. The harmonies on "All the Pretty Little Horses" blend seamlessly on this lullaby. "San Francisco Bay Blues" quickens the tempo with the lads setting toes to tapping, "I ain't got a nickel & ain't got a lousy dime; If she don't come back, I believe I'll lose my mind." "Ja-Da" is a sweet shoe shuffling melody with the harmonies filling this bit of razzle-dazzle. John Phillips' "Ben & Me" has some jangling acoustic guitars and a hint of darkness within the melody. My very favorite track is the lounge style "One Quick Martini" also written by John Phillips, "Let's not pretend that we're lovers meeting in some dim cafe. Let's not pretend that there are others making love the same silly way." Ian Tyson of Ian & Sylvia wrote "Four Strong Winds," which receives an excellent reading here from the Journeymen. Of the 7 bonus tracks added to the original release, "Rag Mama Rag" boasts a great washboard rhythm. "San Francisco Bay Blues" gets a silly kazoo arrangement. "Virgin Mary" is a sweet spiritual that could fit on a Christmas collection. "Greenland Whale Fisheries" is a hearty sailing ballad. The Armstrong floor commercial that ends the disc is an interesting timepiece. This collection is a welcome re-release from one of the eras great folk trios. Enjoy!

The Living Legends claim that they're "The best you never heard of" - I have to agree. These guys are very talented lyricists and they have wicked beats. I think they're talented enough to have mainstream appeal, but I guess they don't want to sign on with a major label.
This CD is a must have for any hip-hop fan. It's full of raw energy and unique rhymes.
