The High & The Mighty.......2007-07-20
Excellent music by London symphony. We used it during an airshow and it worked great! Very happy
A Perfect Recording.......2005-12-03
At its best, film music aurally heightens the drama, pathos, passion, joy and emotional intensity of the visual experience. And when film music is artfully written and skillfully performed, it can create a magnificent aesthetic experience.
Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony Orchestra have created an album featuring some of film music's greatest moments, all of them related to flight. The title track, "The High and the Mighty" features a theme that literally soars, capturing the sweeping energy and pensive drama of the film. Bruce Broughton's "The Boy Who Could Fly" is a beautifully lyrical and tender work.
There are many great films about military flight and fliers, and this recording features some of the best music of the genre. One of the highlights of this album is the great Prelude and Fugue from "Spitfire" by Sir William Walton. One feels the tension and courage exhibited by the great pilots of the RAF. Ron Goodwin's "633 Squadron" and Craig Safan's "The Last Starfighter" are two significant contributions to the genre.
Some of the best loved music about flying is from comedies, and there is no funnier and more clever score than the one Elmer Bernstein created for "Airplane!" Featuring a choir that literally screams, this music is laugh-out-loud funny. With it's homage to John William, "Airplane!" is joined on this disc by one of the greatest pieces of "flying" music ever written - John Williams' brilliant Flying Theme from "E.T. The Extraterrestrial."
While the music itself is brilliant, the performance by Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony is breathtaking. This orchestra has a long history of performing the soundtracks for motion pictures, but this recording features performances that are, for the most part, even better than the originals. The brass plays with more richness and the strings with more finesse than can be heard in a movie theater.
Richard Kaufman has created a perfect album - a compilation of film music built around the theme of flight that covers every emotion, every nuance and every sensation of the genre - performed with more skill and passion than has ever been captured on a recording before. You have to hear this one!

Transitional NGR.......2007-05-21
This CD is a combination of two NGR albums - Fly Through the Country and When the Storm is Over.
If you're looking for classic NGR, this is it. Just about every tune you remember from the original guys (Sam, John, Curtis, and Courtney) is included - just about every song on these albums was a "hit" for them. In addition, the best of these were carried over to the more modern NGR sound when Bela and Pat joined the group.
I call it "transitional" for two reasons. The first was mentioned in the previous paragraph. The second is that these albums are where NGR really "locks in" it's signature sound. The preferred harmony stack, extended jams, and song selection would continue until the much later days of the band where they went a bit more in the jazz direction.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that a number of the songs would be better featured in a "live" setting. "Fly Through the Country" (the tune, not the whole album) falls a bit flat in the studio as do a couple of others. Fortunately, there are a couple of live albums (one from this era and another from the later incarnation) where you can hear NGR playing as they were meant to be.
Go ahead. Buy this. You won't be disappointed, and you'll feel right "at home" with a bunch of guys who streached bluegrass to the breaking point, and became legend because of it.
When The Storm Is Over/Fly Through the Country.......2004-03-24
This compilation of two separately released records on vinyl is absolutely one of the best driving cd's available. If the sun is shining, and you're on the road, this is a must have for those who love finger pickin'!
The best of the best.......2001-06-19
Two albums on one CD. When the Storm is Over is very good. Fly Through The Country is excellent. Though Bela Fleck was not in the band when they recorded these two albums, Fly Through The Country represents the best songs the band ever recorded. This would be the one studio album of theirs that is a must have.
Early & Essential New Grass Revival.......2001-04-03
During the 1980's I immersed myself in bluegrass music. I first sought out Bill Monroe, of course, and then Flatt & Scruggs, Ralph & Carter Stanley and from there it was more progressive artists like J.D. Crowe & The New South, The Country Gentlemen, The Seldom Scene, and The New Grass Revival. For too many people, bluegrass music is still personified by the inbred hillbilly from Deliverance playing "Dueling Banjos." That's too bad. This is the music that comes closest to touching the heart and soul of our country's earliest history and for a time no one did it better than Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin, vocal), Courtney Johnson (banjo), Curtis Burch (guitar, vocal) and John Cowan (bass).
This reissue packages their first two studio albums for Flying Fish from 1975 and 1977. [Their debut on Starday featured Ebo Walker on bass.] Fly Through the Country is the more traditional of the two, while When the Storm is Over added piano and drums on many of the tracks. But they would constantly balance the two. They'd do the Flatt & Scruggs standard ("Doin' My Time") one moment, then turn around and cover Jackson Browne ("These Days") the next. They'd also cover Jimmy Webb ("Fly Through the Country"), Rick Roberts ("Four Days of Rain" from The Flying Burrito Brothers) and Townes Van Zandt ("White Freightliner Blues"). Both albums feature John Hartford covers: "Skippin' in the Mississippi Dew" from the former and "Vamp in the Middle" from the latter. The only songwriter in the band was Sam Bush who wrote the instrumental "Crooked Smile," a nearly eight-minute instrumental heavily influenced by David Grisman's "dawg" music, which blended jazz and bluegrass. Bush also co-wrote another six of these tracks with Steven Brines.
Amazon.com only lists the tracks from When the Storm Is Over. Here's the tracks from Fly Through the Country: 1. Skippin' in the Mississippi Dew 2. Good Woman's Love 3. Glory 4. All Night Train 5. Fly Through the Country 6. This Heart of Mine 7. The Dancer 8. When She Made Laughter Easy 9. Doin' My Time 10. These Days
While the band would continue to have success into the 80's with a slighltly altered lineup, these early recordings have an excitement and urgency about them that still make them enjoyable twenty-five years later. And this two-fer is a real bargain. Grab it while you can. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Essential early and defining work.......1998-06-19
"When The Storm Is Over" continues to solidify the New Grass Revival as America's premier progressive bluegrass band. All of the elements that would become the band's trademarks throughout their existence are already evident; innovation, distinctive interpretation, superb presentation, excellent writing and song selection, not to mention their unsurpassed musical abilities. "When The Storm Is Over" is fittingly combined with an earlier album release, "Fly Through The Country", on one CD. Very similar, these two albums give us a good perspective of their early work following the departure of Ebo Walker on bass, who appeared on only one album. Replaced by John Cowan, his Rock/Blues influences further delineated the group from mainstream bluegrass and provided greater diversity.
This set has it all - There are soulful ballads - "Sail To Australia" and "He Says I Love You". "Four Days Of Rain", the title track "When The Storm Is Over", and "Like A Child In The Rain", are delightful upbeat melodies. "White Freightliner Blues" and the instrumental duet "Tennessee Rain" are proof that the group has dedicated roots in the heart of bluegrass, demonstrating the ability to play traditional renditions fluently....and during a time when "progressive" and "bluegrass" were still contradictory terms. "Crooked Smile" is the climactic high-powered instrumental jam, finishing off the record with Bush's wonderfully constructed mandolin lead throughout, reminiscent of "Red Man Blues" and its fiddle work from their previous live album.
The only reason this record gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because New Grass Revival only gets better from here.

Customer Reviews:
Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

A Magical Musical Journey Around the World with Mantovani........2005-02-23
The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe, and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. The splendid orchestrations found on the Tango tracks also evoke a variety of emotions, with Whatever Lola Wants, Hernando's Hideaway and Takes Two to Tango, offering playful amusement, and such tracks as Blue Sky, Orange Vendor, and Tango Delle Rose combining captivating tango rhythms with time honored melodies made ever more delightful by the unique, cathedral sound identified exclusively with Mantovani. In an interview at the time of the Tango album's release, the ever perfectionist Mantovani expressed his delight with the musical outcome, noting that he tried "blending fine melodies with exciting rhythms to produce a sound that is stimulating.." Acquire this two CD-set, and new and old Mantovani fans will know the maestro was right on the mark in his assessment of this incomparable musical journey.

Amazon.com essential recording
Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08
Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.

Customer Reviews:
Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09
This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.
Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28
I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
