5 out of 5 stars Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !.......2001-12-26

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

    5 out of 5 stars just beautiful.......2007-05-12

When I first bought this CD I was addicted for a while. The singing is beautiful and the music is too. I had hoped for more traditional japanese instruments but it is still beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Not very eastern -- at all.......2003-07-25

Well, this is very beautiful, and it is very relaxing. I'm sure the quality of the voice work done on this disc is excellent, though I'm not an expert.

The problem is, it is not Japanese, except for the songs themselves. The instrumentation is completely western, and the arrangements of the songs tend to downplay the eastern sound of the compositions. Maybe I just didn't understand what this would be: I didn't expect koto music or anything, but I did expect to expose my children to a different type of musical structure.

    5 out of 5 stars ..a little more information.......1998-08-15

Mera is a male countertenor from Japan. He appears to be quite young and may be just starting his career. Whereas most countertenors I've heard have a boy-soprano, brassy sound, Mera has a mellow, mezzo sound with a nice vibrato. I've never heard a male voice like it.

All songs on the album are sung in Japanese. There are no translations of the songs, but there are summaries which give you an idea of what the song is about. The Japanese lyrics are included, so if you can read/translate them, you'll know more than I do. (If you do translate them, please contact me. I'd like to have copies.)

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1998-08-04

Mera has the most beautiful voice I've heard in a long time. Sounds like a female mezzo but with a little mellower sound. Anyway, this album has lighter fare than his Japanese art songs album, but it's still lovely to listen to. He sings some familiar and some not so familiar folk songs.

If you like this album, you might try his other album "Nightengale" (Japanese art songs).

4 out of 5 stars ...and 1/2....Unique signature sound while demonstrating a healthy respect for the traditions of bluegrass.......2005-11-25

Playing time - 38:16 -- If unavailable at this site, you might check at [...] I am always pleased to make the acquaintance with a regional northwest band that is creating their own unique signature sound while demonstrating a healthy respect for the traditions of bluegrass music. Such is the case with the eclectic Seattle-based quartet, Lost in the Fog, which draws from traditional bluegrass, blues, classic country, swing, and modern country material. I sometimes wonder if being on the West coast, rather far removed from the Appalachian heart of bluegrass, leads to more eclectic musical preferences.

The opening cut of Johnnie and Jack's "Ashes of Love" is given an uptempo and hard-driving bluegrass treatment. Then, we're swinging along with the classic country Hank Williams hit, "Hey, Good Lookin'." Next we're treated to a self-penned newgrassy and melodic instrumental called "The Devil's Thumb," presumably named for the mountain of the same name in Alaska. Next up is Lucinda Williams' "Side of the Road," a beautiful folk ballad which expresses the desire to maintain one's identity and have a little space while in a relationship. Traditional bluegrass is up next with "I'm Gonna Sleep with One Eye Open."
      You get the idea!

Lost in the Fog seems to have very diverse musical interests and are equally comfortable with Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In" or an old-timey flavored original instrumental , "Robin in the Cottonwood." That's exactly why I like this band. There's something for everyone here. My only suggestion would have been for them to add a guest fiddler on this debut album. Songs that are standouts are Jake Weber's beautiful and expressive renditions of the songs, "There Ain't No Ash Will Burn" (written by Alabama country songwriter Walt Aldridge) and "The Bird That I Held in My Hand" (by T-Bone Burnett).

Lost in the Fog is Michael Moore (banjo, resonator guitar), Mark Snyder (bass), Jake Weber (guitar), and Jason Parker (mandolin). Michael Moore contributed three original instrumental numbers on this album. Jake Weber is originally from New Jersey, and her choice of material to sing indicates a background in folk, world, and alternative music. Jason Parker hails from Kentucky and lays down a steady mandolin chop and solid breaks and fills on this project. Mark Snyder's musical roots are in the Mississippi River town of Clinton, Iowa, and he shares the majority of lead vocalist duties with Jake Weber. On this album, Moore also does a commendable job as lead singer for "Don't Fence Me In."

The northwest bluegrass community should take note of this fine versatile group from Seattle. I hope to see them playing a wider area and appearing live at more bluegrass festivals in the future. Their resourceful approach to acoustic music incorporates a broad variety of elements that should earn them a legion of fans who like an eclectic repertoire. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
