5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

5 out of 5 stars Uneven but Still and All Great.......2007-07-04

I like Mame and Hello Dolly some, but frankly they always annoyed me by straining too much for lively and enthusiastic. This one is much more in keeping with my taste. It is mostly a gentler and more subdued show, with a lot of very good music. The title song and One Person are too much in Herman's rousing and stirring mode, and very much out of place with the rest of the score. That rest of the score is a wow, though.

The sardonic opening Spring of Next Year has a gorgeous melody but the lyrics are a sly parody and indictment of the big business ethic, a very French attitude. The contrast between melody and lyrics is exquisite. The Tea Party builds and builds until it ends in a hilarious babble of triple counterpoint harmony. The ballads Kiss Her Now, I've Never Said I Love You, and I Was Beautiful are gorgeous and express genuine emotion. Each Tomorrow Morning finds Herman in a gentler inspirational mode that works much better in this context than the two more standard Herman blasts. Even the song called Garbage is anything but. The performances are uniformly superb.

By the accounts I've read, Dear World flopped because an oversized production warred with the basically intimate nature of the show. Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of seeing a rare staging by a regional theter in Washington. It was a deliberately small production and to paraphrase the show, it was beautiful. In any case, of all Herman's scores, I think I like this one best, though Mack and Mabel is close. And Milk and Honey and La Cage have a lot to recommend them as well. Buy this one - you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Dear, Dear..........2007-06-21

There is much that is lovely, even gorgeous, in Herman's score, but for every "I Don't Want to Know" or "I've Never Said I Love You" or even "Garbage" (a deliciously garish tango), there's a "One Person" or the title number that sound like they belong in another show (probably Hello Dolly or Mame).

As the liner notes to the CD and others here have said, Dear World was an uneasy amalgam of a gentle fantasy requiring a light touch and a raucous Broadway "big lady" show. I'd say 80% of the score works: in addition to the above-mentioned songs, there's the soaring opening "The Spring of Next Year", Lansbury's dramatic "Kiss Her Now", her blithe "And I Was Beautiful" and the gorgeous cacophony of "The Tea Party."

Interestingly, if you get the perusal score for the show, there's a new song (a solo for Countess Aurelia) entitled "At the Bottom of the Glass" which sounds more in keeping with the tone than "Each Tomorrow Morning."

However, all quibbles aside, Dear World does bear repeated listening. For those who think Herman is merely frivolous anonymous showtunes, this show disputes that.

5 out of 5 stars Herman's best!.......2006-09-20

I don't typically belong to the Jerry Herman fan base, but this score of his is awesome. I am familiar with Hello, Dolly, Mame, Mack And Mabel and La Cage Aux Folles, but this is the only Herman score I find enjoyable throughout. Having the glorious Angela Lansbury singing the bittersweet songs is also wonderful. As this show is one of the celebrated, legendary flops of Broadway history, I assume the book of the show has to take the blame. The score is first rate. Take this from a dedicated Sondheimite;)

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon reviewers.......2006-07-25

I bought this because of the positive user reviews and couldn't be more thankful that I did. I'm not an expert on the musical form so I can't really speak to the strengths and weaknesses of the book nor the coherence of musical styles of the songs, but I can say with conviction that Angela Lansbury is unbelievably good on this recording. It's difficult for me to convey just how good she is, but I urge anyone whose curiosity is peaked by these reviews to break down and buy the CD. Lansbury's performance alone is worth the price of admission. Her voice is warm, comic, heartbreaking and uplifting. Just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars MY SECOND ALEXANDER H COHEN PRODUCTION.......2006-06-15

This still is my favorite play, i was young but i do remember how delightfully charming and funny this tale was. The scenic design still lingers, but this score will forever be etched in my mind. Dear World, And I was Beautiful, Kiss Her Now, Each Tomorrow Morning to name just a few classics by Jerry Herman a pro and way ahead of the time...when theatre was still theatre.

5 out of 5 stars The Desert Song/The New Moon.......2005-10-06

I have loved the music of The Desert Song since I first saw it, starring Dennis Morgan, in the cinema many, many years ago, and then the Gordeon McCrae version on TV. I think the Dennis Morgan one was better, or perhaps I may be prejudiced as I have an unfortunate tendency to prefer original versions (how many subsequent productions have proved superior? Not too many).
However, back to the CD. To listen to this super CD is pure pleasure, a real nostalgia trip. Although I had never heard of the musical The New Moon, I was very surprised to realise that the music was almost a familiar to me as from The Desert Song. Aha, the joys of listening to the old fashioned wireless when I was a little girl!

4 out of 5 stars Two classic operettas on one CD.......2004-02-03

Decca Broadway's operetta series providing remastered reissues of eight classic recordings from the 1940s/50s is most welcome. Many of these operettas have no other available recordings on Cd, and these Decca albums have been out-of-print since the late 1960s.

This set offers a classic DESERT SONG recording with Felix Knight, Wilbur Evans and Kitty Carlisle. Some of the dialogue is hysterical: "I Can't kill you" says Kitty before she sails into "I Love You" in the first act finale. It's silly but it's fun.

THE NEW MOON is a more or less straight reading of seven numbers from the score (plus a nicely arranged Overture conducted by Victor Young) performed by a solid cast.

Sound quality on both operettas is quite good considering the age of the original masters: DESERT SONG is 60 years old now.

4 out of 5 stars Stupendous Operettas Finally Available.......2002-10-18

THE DESERT SONG/THE NEW MOON reissue on Decca Broadway Operettas series is as welcome as a spring day. Despite the limited range of the mono sound of both releases, the CD double play should make a welcome addition to any theater lover's music library.

Of the two, THE NEW MOON comes off best with absolutely stunning baritone singing by Lee Sweetland on "Marianne" and "Stouthearted Men" and finer but less impressive work by Jane Wilson and Thomas Hayward on the other familiar numbers. And they are very familiar. Even if you've never seen this show (or the altered film version with Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy), you'll have heard many of these songs as background music or featured in the film DEEP IN MY HEART, the story of composer Sigmund Romberg.

THE DESERT SONG gives a nice representation of its score hampered only by Kitty Carlisle's tremulous soprano waverings. Wilbur Evans and Felix Knight carry off the male roles with great artistry.

With these shows almost never being revived (except for their film versions, the latter made in 1953 with Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson), this CD is a most welcome treat.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

4 out of 5 stars Time Travel Is Possible.......2005-03-22

When Judy Dyble left Fairport Convention way back in the 1960s, many distraught music fans kept an eagle eye out in the music press to see to what she would turn her hand next. She was clearly wondering herself as on 1 June 1968 she put a "Musician Wanted" ad in Melody Maker. When Peter Giles responded by telephone, the call was answered by boyfriend Ian McDonald. This led to both of them working with Giles, Giles and Fripp, the ensemble which was to mutate into King Crimson. But a month later Judy and Ian's relationship was over and she left once more.
Jackie McAuley had been organist and guitarist with Them during their rumbustious Angry Young Them period, and when Van Morrison had split the band some of them including Jackie and his drummer brother Pat had kept going, attracting the attention of Los Angeles producer Kim Fowley. He christened them the Belfast Gypsies and recorded with them a spirited rewrite of Gloria called Gloria's Dream, as well as the psych beat track People! Let's Freak Out which they released under the pseudonym the Freaks Of Nature. Then Jackie had briefly formed a band with Paul Brady in Dublin, called Cult, and travelled across Europe and Morocco, each widening his musical horizons.
This disparate duo forged an unlikely alliance in 1969 when they formed Trader Horne (the name of John Peel's nanny, apparently) and made some live performances. I was lucky enough to see them at Mother's Club in Birmingham.
A single was released called Sheena, with a Judy Dyble song on the flipside, Morning Way, which became the title track of this, their only album. It was quite unlike anything either had done before, ethereal and whimsical and imbued with childlike wonder, with Tolkeinesque lyrics that tell of the Children Of Oare and of Three Rings For Eleven Kings, and a soundscape fleshed out with flutes, harpsichords, auto-harps and celeste.
Assisting on the album are Ray Elliott, an ally from Them, on alto flute and bass clarinet, bass-guitarist John Godfrey who arranged much of the album, and from Twice As Much's band, Andy White on drums.
Most of the songs were written by Jackie McAuley, whose original intention had been to write a children's album, but Judy Dyble contributes both Morning Way and the beautiful Velvet To Atone, which she wrote with Martin Quittenton from Steamhammer. There is also a version of Bessie Smith's Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out (here titled Down And Out Blues), and all the tracks are knitted together with a recurring instrumental motif. Another single followed the album: Here Comes The Rain backed with Goodbye Mercy Kelly, and these are both included on this re-issue.
Trader Horne were due to be launched at a festival set up specifically for the purpose, the Hollywood Music Festival in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where I first experienced the Grateful Dead. Typically, though, Judy had broken up the band (in what she called a "tantrum") shortly before and went off to get married to Simon Stable. The festival launched Mungo Jerry instead.
She also toured the Netherlands with DC and the MBs (Judy Dyble, Lol Coxhill and Phil & Steve Miller) before settling down as a librarian. Trader Horne continued briefly with Saffron Summerfield, before Jackie McAuley embarked on a solo career.
It is hard to imagine an album like this being made today, though at the time it could have sat in your album rack alongside Donovan, Trees, Vashti Bunyan or Keith Relf's Renaissance. The song Morning Way was included on a retrospective anthology called Paisley Pop, an umbrella title for a genre unrecognised at the time. I'm told it now fits into the new genre of Weird Folk. Listen to this album and time travel to an unrecognisable world

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this album and be part of it........2002-03-11

For years I had thought this group a myth. I could find no information in music encyclopedias, or on Judy Dyble on the internet. I had only known that she had gone on, after singing on the first Fairport Convention album, to record for a band called Trader Horne and then the Coxhills. To say that it has been worth the wait would be a sad understatement of how immersed I became in the mood of the album even after the first song.
So many are the moments of magic on this album. It's main theme is simple, the journey into adulthood. The opening song, "Jenny May" sets the whole scene of the album nicely. It is a child's invocation to a friend to come out and play, to step into a special world of make-believe. Such is the world the listener immediately becomes immersed in.
The music, much of it accoustic and accompanied by harpsichord, is gorgeous and is a perfect partner to the range of lyrical imagery from flying witches to mermaids. These are songs about what you used to imagine (I did at least) in your woods when you played in them on sunny afternoons. To borrow from the sleeve notes, these are songs to find in your cupboards and under your pillows. They are snatches of memories past that sometimes find their way into the present and offer unique glimpses into today.
I think the defining moment of Morning Way is "Mixed Up Kind", another song about passing into adulthood. The first verse totally knocked me out. Other hight points are the instrumental, "Three Rings For Elvin Kings" and "Children of Oare". Special mention goes to the title song, one of the three contemporary songs, along with "Sheena" and "Down and Out Blues" that grace the album. This song completes the journey into adulthood, with the narrator recounciling his or herself to the loss of all their friends over the years. It should have been the last song, but the album closes with "Luke That Never Was", a song about departure.
There are two bonus tracks here. Of the two, I like "Here Comes The Rain" best. This could have bookended the first Fairport alubm nicely. You'd swear the same musicians play on both.
Don't be fooled by the inclusion of that one blues song. This is an album as indispensable as air. Much gratitude should go to whomever was responsible for reissuing Morning Way, because too many years have gone by without anyone even having the slightest clue about its existence. Listen to this album and let yourself get transported back to timelessness.

Album Description

The new issue of Nosferatu contains more than 20 additional minutes of material left off the original release and for the first time appears as the complete soundtrack in the correct running sequence. Nosferatu contains four pieces which rank among the best in the Popol Vuh catalogue, thanks to a serene, mystic, deeply personal stance that basically transposes Hosianna Mantra into gothic music.

All Popol Vuh re-releases are manufactured as high quality collector's series with stickers indicating the bonus tracks. The Digipak spines have a design and when all are put together they form one big picture.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Meditative But Repetitive.......2007-06-12

Popol Vuh is one of the "krautrock" bands I missed when in was in its prime. Now that its back catalogue is being remastered and re-released, the band is receiving renewed critical and listener interest. Recently, I read a review of Nosferatu in an English music magazine that pronounced this to be one of the essential recordings in the Popol Vuh catalogue. Well, perhaps I'd have been happier if I had purchased one of the recordings blessed here with five stars first.
I find Nosferatu an enjoyable CD, deeply meditative but also highly repetitive. Perhaps that is what lends it an entrancing quality. And maybe the repetition is there because this is primarily film music. Certainly, this would not be for everyday listening. But if you just want to relax and withdraw into your inner world, then putting on Nosferatu is a good way to do just that.
I will try out a couple of other Popol Vuh recordings to get a good overall feel for the band. But if this is your first outing with them as it is for me, I suggest you start with a different album unless of course the features I describe here appeal to you.

4 out of 5 stars Graceful and moving.......2006-03-24

Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable album. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. There is also a spiritual quality about it that evokes feelings of loss, sorrow and redemption. Together with the album Until The End Of The World, Nosferatu is my favourite soundtrack of all time. The music is never less than deeply moving, the epitome of grace and elegance.

3 out of 5 stars Bruder des Schattens truncated.......2005-07-20

When I was in 8th grade I saw Herzog's Nosferatu. I ran out and bought the only soundtrack I could find, which turns out to be the inferior "second" soundtrack, reproduced here in full beginning with track 5. I was disappointed that while it did contain the track On the Way (track 13 here), which featured the men's choir motif that is heard over the main credits (and at other points in the film), it was not orchestrated as the film version was, and did not include the lovely acoustic guitar/piano section. Later I found another soundtrack that featured the same movie poster art as this CD, and featured the first four songs on this CD. I preferred that soundtrack much more because it did contain the entire "Bruder des Schattens" which translated into English means "Brothers of Darkness." (The second part of the title, and I am assuming this signifies the acoustic guitar/piano section, is "Sons of Light."

A warning...this CD edits the Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light" track right after the acoustic guitar and piano begin. The whole thing ought to be about 16 or 17 minutes, and this is only 5:41. It is a real shame. I will tell you that if you really want the entire track, you can buy a wonderful CD entitled Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra, which contains works from two other albums, and does include the entire "Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light." That is what I did.

Overall this is a good CD and the songs are just as I remember them on the LP. Be aware that if you have seen the film but not heard these soundtracks before, very little of the soundtracks are in the movie. Granted, there are rather lengthy exceptions, but as someone else has pointed out, there is quite a bit of Wagner and Gounod, and many of the Popol Vuh tunes are not used in the movie at all. All in all, however, this is a very good compilation of Popol Vuh's style.

This is currently the most complete soundtrack album to Werner Herzog's 1979 movie remake of "Nosferatu." It has all of Popol Vuh's recordings that are associated with the film, BUT with the exception of the first track "Bruder Des Schattens." The album is also missing some other songs from the film.

On this disc, "Bruder Des Schattens" is an exception because it is not the complete song version. Popol Vuh's CD, "Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra," is one cd that features the complete 16 or so minute version of "Bruder Des Schattens." The CD's tracklist may list it as "Brothers of the Shade-Sons of the Light."

Music that ALL soundtrack albums to Herzog's 1979 remake of "Nosferatu" are missing:

"Prelude" from Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold" conducted by George Solti and performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker. The Wiener Philharmoniker is also or perhaps formerly known as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Sanctus" from Charles Gounod's "Messe Solennelle" (ALLEGEDLY the version featured on the cd, "Gounod: Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile; Petite Symphonie for wind instruments." The conductor, Jean-Claude Hartemann, is associated with that cd.)

"Zinskaro" by the Vocal Ensemble Gordela. Song sometimes listed as Tsintsharo, Tshintsharo, Zinzkaro, etc. Group sometimes listed as the Vocal Ansambl Gordela. Both Extremely rare.

A diegetic song performed by a little boy in the film. I'm sorry but I don't know anything else about it. Note: "Diegetic" means sounds picked up by the movie camera during the shooting of a scene.
