Recorded in New York but featuring musicians of Middle Eastern and European origins well versed in Gypsy music, this is a lively get-together of great musicians and great music. Mostly acoustic in nature and featuring ud, zurna, ney, kanun, saxophone, violin, guitar, bass, and percussion, these 12 tracks romp through 10 tunes, many with vocals, that lovingly alloy the base metals of several Gypsy cultures. With headliners like Richard A. Hagopian and the acclaimed Omar Faruk Tekbilek, the standard and integrity is high, and Gypsy Fire should appeal to all those who like their Gypsy music unadulterated by crossover aspirations or modern electronics. This folksy approach does not affect the rollicking energy at all, however, and several of these cuts will be more than enough to clear the tables out of the way. Gypsy music is alive and well in New York after all. --Derek Rath

Here's a handy collection of popular works for violin and orchestra. The title apparently refers to the mix of warmly romantic music, like the Massenet Méditation, and flashy virtuoso stuff, like the Sarasate Carmen Fantasy and Zigeunerweisen. Sarah Chang excels in both areas. Her Dvorák and Beethoven Romances are sweetly sung, while the insanely virtuosic Tzigane by Ravel, with its wild staccato and chordal effects, she tosses off without breaking a sweat. Except for the romanticized Bach Air from the Suite No. 3, there are no stylistic transgressions, and the mix of fiery virtuoso fare and romantic slower beauties keeps interest alive throughout. Conductor Placido Domingo's proficient accompaniments don't get in her way. All the selections are familiar. Such violin virtuosi as Suk, Oistrakh, Grumiaux, Vengerov, and Perlman have recorded most of them, often coming closer to capturing the inner glow of the music. But Chang's exciting performances can't fail to please, especially if you want all these favorites on one disc. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Fire and Ice? Fire, yes. But ? Brava Sarah! Theresa NY.......2005-04-22

After listening to this CD by Sarah Chang I can see the Fire in all of the selections, even the "Meditiation" by Massenet. But where the Ice comes in I cannot tell. Sarah plays with such vibrance and zeal and even if you've never heard the selection before it doesn't matter. Her interpretation of "Zigeunerweisen" is the best I have ever heard. And I think Placido Domingo also does a fabulous job of conducting. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable CD's I own. I urge you to buy it. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars I'm impressed . . ........2004-10-22

I put the CD in CD player, turned up the volume, and went about the house doing domestic things. I had to stop doing the dishes, dry my hands, and run upstairs (and I do not like the stairs, have major issues with the stairs!) just to check the disc information. The playing was that good, jaw-droppingly so. I'm impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Chang v. Perlman.......2004-10-03

This album has almost the same repertoire as one by Perlman. Some days I prefer the Perlman version, other days I prefer Sarah's version. Sarah has been a perfect technical virtuoso since she was 13. At age 19, she has matured in her artistic interpretation to rival the best in the world. (I consider Itzak Perlman to be the best, but Sarah is nearly his equal, and she is yet quite young.) I eagerly await each new album she publishes. I wish she would come to town so I could hear her live. I also wish she would record occasionally on analog LP, especially direct disc. I find CDs much less faithful to the sound of live music than LPs, though at least todays CD players are somewhat listenable, instead of making the dreadful sounds they did when the medium was new.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sarasate.......2002-12-25

This recording of Carmen and Zigeunerweisen is hard to do any better. Simply great fiddle playing! Chang's vibrato and virtuosity suits this style perfectly and not many can play the page full of thirds in Carmen as well as she did it! Least successful was Beethoven and Bach. I rather prefer a more poetic mood (slower tempo) and a slightly less expansive vibrato for this kind of music. Sarah has a sometimes very broad vibrato well suited for fiery stuff but not so well suited for music that demands a certain level of sophistication. Anyway that is just my personal opinion as a violin freak. I guess the broader audience would not mind since the sound is very nice even if the vibrato is a bit out of control at times.

Thanks Sarah for yet another great recording!

1 out of 5 stars Not Bernstien and not for serious listeners.......2003-06-30

I ordered this cd (used) mainly to get the Glinka capriccio (assumedly) by Bernstein, thinking I might enjoy the orchestral versions from Carmen as well. Received the disk and was shocked to see the name Andre Kostelanetz on it...only couple tracks are by Bernstein. The pieces are mostly played at a breakneck tempo that tramples the music. The recording quality is poor. Sounds like a studio remix where the players were recorded at different times. This CD is a poor choice; even in the bargain bin; even for casual listeners. There are much better played and recorded orchestrations of these Spanish-themed works available.

5 out of 5 stars Pristinely Beautiful.......2002-03-12

This is really a beautiful recording. I am not an opera expert, but during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics I was transfixed by the Carmen music that Sasha Cohen skated her Long Program to. I simply had to hear it again as soon as possible, and saw this "Carmen Without Words" CD on Amazon. This CD does not have any "libretto", or words. It is just a Carmen 'suite' of the tunes from the opera. Opera connoisseurs will probably want to order a multi-disc set of the entire unabridged Carmen opera, but for opera hacks like myself this CD is perfect for enjoyable times in front of the computer or while reading magazines, to just enjoy Carmen's great tunes. The sound is clean, crisp, and the music is perfectly played by Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra. It's amazing how well they play, actually, it borders on perfect. Anyway, you are sure to love this CD. It is lovely to listen to, and I don't see how anything about it could disappoint you. By the way, the CD also contains four bonus tracks from several other composers to really top it all off.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CD!.......2002-01-19

THIS IS A GREAT CD FOR THOSE WHO, LIKE ME, JUST WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC FROM OPERA WITHOUT THE SINGING. I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER ALONG WITH THE OTHER "OPERA WITHOUT WORDS" CDS.

I have not heard a Carmen performance which compares with this one.

As the fifth installment in Narada's popular new flamenco series, Gypsy Fire revisits a successful formula that once again will likely generate broad listener enthusiasm while also sparking sporadic grumbling from flamenco purists who believe the genre's tradition is being dishonored. Don't expect this disc's collection of 13 previously released tracks to alter the perspective of either camp. Gypsy Fire is primarily targeted at a contemporary audience, one that probably appreciates the melodic essence found in each selection at least as much as the players' nimble finger work. You'll hear no vocalizing on this collection, and a bit more emphasis on tamer, midtempo (i.e., romantic) pieces than on previous Narada packages. Highlights include the smoldering sensuality of "Gentle Seduction," the opening track from Oscar Lopez, notes by the thousands flying through "Nuevo Sol" by Strunz & Farah, and the agile melodicism of Spain's Jose Luis Encinas on "Huracan Rumba." --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars gypsyfire disappointment.......2007-01-14

I had an original gypsy fire cd and loved it and unfortunately lost it. My wonderful partner found one to replace it. Many of the cuts are the same on both, but some have been dropped or replaced and are not nearly as exciting as the original; somewhat disappointing, although better than not having them at all!

4 out of 5 stars More heart, but less fire than embers.......2003-10-13

If you like New Flamenco (or Nouveau Flamenco, as it's also called) this is a good CD to have in your collection. But the title "Gypsy Fire" ought to really be "Gypsy Embers" as many of the pieces are more contemplative than rousing. Not a bad thing in a guitar CD, but this is definitely not hot dance music.

My favorite cuts were the last two, "Tormenta de Fuego" by Ruben Romero and Lydia Torea, and "Moonlight Dance" by James Bobchak. These aren't sampled here, but the samples provided do give a good idea of the more mellow tone of this CD. What's also nice is the selection of artists, from Oscar Lopez, to Ottmar Liebert, Miguel de la Bastide from Canada, and of course Jesse Cook, whom I think is my favorite, though really it's hard to choose. If you like New Flamenco, you will probably enjoy this CD sampler.

5 out of 5 stars Fiery and fun!.......2003-05-26

This collection of consistently lively, rich and sensual numbers features a variety of "New Flamenco" artists. Included are works by Oscar Lopez, Jesse Cook, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz and Farrah, Govi and many more. I'm not sure how this wonderfully Latin music ends up in the New Age section of the CD racks rather than World Music, since it doesn't sound "New-Agey" at all, but it's great to listen to regardless of its classification. Consistently compelling, "Gypsy Fire" is my favorite of the Narada New Flamenco samplers released to date. Other compilations in the series include "Gypsy Soul", "Gypsy Passion", "Obsession" and "Flamenco Fire and Grace".

4 out of 5 stars good compilation album.......2001-10-17

Wow---Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez plus Willie & Lobo on
ONE cd? That's reason enough to buy this title right
there! Actually, I don't own a copy (YET!) but I have
it currently checked out from my local library and it certainly
does not disspoint! Like with a lot of things I check out from our local city library, I'll probably end up buying this CD too.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one to get.......2000-05-14

I bought two disks as an introduction to Nouveau Flamingo. The first was by Ottmar Liebert. I found it rather uninvolving and might have stopped there, if not for Gypsy Fire. It is by far the best introduction to the genre and I highly recommend it. If you don't love at least some of the songs on Gypsy Fire, then Nouveau Flamingo is not for you. I particularly recommend Gentle Seduction by Oscar Lopez, Cascada by Jesse Cook, and the compelling A Touch of Love by the Ramon Bermudez Group. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything else by the latter group, but the other two are represented on other CDs, so you can follow their work.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic folk Russian Gypsy sound.......2004-01-25

This isn't pre-packaged, restaurant entertainment Gypsy music; it's very folky, heart-felt and juicy stuff. This has famous ex-Loyko guitarist Vadim Kulitskii, but the violinst is what has me estatic over this CD. The trio consists of Kulitskii, Russian accordianist Oleg Nehls (playing the Bayan or button accordian) and Oleksander Klimas on that violin. The guitar is reminiscent of Django Reinhardt in the fingering and picking, but this trio is 100 percent Russki. Very wonderful, especially the third cut on the CD "Gypsy Soul." Wish my grandmother were still alive to enjoy this--she hailed from Kiev and adored this music.

5 out of 5 stars Russian Gypsy has the Fire.......2004-01-18

I received this CD as a gift. I was skeptical as I am fussy about the arrangements and performing of all, especially Balkan and Gypsy, music. I thought that it would be another "Gypsy Music Light" produced for the masses and profit- far from it. The music is authentic; excellent presentation with back to basics playing. Clean, precise instrumentation- no slides, squeaks, etc- superb musicianship. And the Rom Fire is definitely roaring under Kulitskii with his emotional vocals.
He has full empathetic musical comradeship in Oleg Nehls and Oleksandr Klimas. Klimas' range of sounds (including a "Canary" as captivating as that of the late Sandor Deki Lakatosh) alone is more than worth the price. Had it not
been a gift, I would have gladly bought this Cd.
    At full price......
A must-have for the serious afficiando and beginning listener. alike.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs to inspire dance!.......2006-02-23

If you are looking for traditional songs with a gypsy flare, this is what you have been looking for! Many songs are a 9/8's rythm. There is a nice mix of fast and slow songs-all very dramatic. These songs have the ability to stir the spirit within. I dare you to try and suppress the urge to dance!

5 out of 5 stars Dying for the sequel!.......2004-02-12

This is without question one of the best CDs I own, if not the best.

It's lots of fun to listen to. Those who are _completely_ new to middle eastern music might not like a few of the tracks the first time they hear them, but at least half of them are perfect for all audiences.

I recommend it to dancers of all levels: it's great for beginners because the pieces are classics they should be familiar with, and they're easy to dance to. At the same time, they're played with such energy and finesse that experienced dancers (who have heard them a million times) will have plenty to work with and won't be bored.

WARNING TO DANCERS: this CD can spoil you for other bands! Very few will play these songs with this much STYLE!

My personal favorite is Minoush, which has a great jazzy sound that reminds me of the photos of the "golden age" 8th avenue dancers from the 60s.

I noticed that Amazon didn't include track lengths (which I'm always interested in as a dancer), so here they are:

    -Konyali 2:34
    -Beledy 3:05
    -Minoush 3:37
    -Istemem Babacim 4:10
    -Rompi Rompi 4:13
    -Fincan 4:38
    -Nihavent 4:48
    -siseler 4:59
    -Kadife 5:54
-Muhabbet 8:13 (the first 2:16 are a taqsim)

I hope they put out a sequel some day.

5 out of 5 stars Talented experienced musicians play in this recording.......2003-10-01

As Mr. Wail says "a vast number of people would love if they were exposed to it", I am exposed to this recording by a friend during a car voyage. After a while I noticed that this music is not only good, but also rich in everyway. Especially three consequtive solos in song 'Siseler' are superb. One more point which is actually a bit disappointing is that the most of the reviewers express their thoughts on the album as a 'belly dancer's music'. I would go farther than that, and say "this is ethnic jazz", as far as my teacher taught me what jazz is. It's no way a background music, on the contrary a fest for the ears.

    5 out of 5 stars A magical gathering.......2003-04-13

Right now you are reading reviews for one of my very favorite recordings. This is a "Super Group" in the most real sense of the phrase. Not in that ego-fest, masturbatory rock&roll overhyped guitar-solo after overhyped guitar-solo sort of supergroup way, though. What you have here is a gathering of musical giants who give everything towards the good of the group, towards the good of the overall sound.

Rhythmically this cd is a dream. Melodically it's just as good. Richard Hagopian (oud), Omar Faruk Tekbilek (ney and zurna), and Yuri Yunakov (alto saxophone) are probably the most well-known musicians here (and they are all brilliant, each providing many highlights throughout this cd), but I want to make special mention here of Harold Hagopian (violin) who may be overlooked in the shadow of his father, Richard. I first got turned onto the Hagopians from the Armenian Music Through The Ages cd, again under Richards name, but his son Harold is a stunning violinist. This isn't one of those "Oh my mom and/or dad is famous so I got lucky and have a career because of them" situations. Harold is a flat-out brilliant violinist.

Aside from just being fantastic music, I also love the spirit of this cd. This is such joyful, jubilant music. All brought about because some people of different backgrounds and ethnicities realize that diversity and "the whole" can reap amazing rewards. You will never ever get depressed from listening to this cd.

I too am puzzled by the earlier "too authentic" comment. "Too authentic" doesn't even exist in my world. I fear this comment probably came from having a case of Ry Cooder-itis. You know, really bland guy with some fame decides to water a certain "ethnic music" down so that it is more popular and palatable to the American mainstream.

This cd is one of those perfect examples of The Anti-Ry Cooder syndrome.

I do know that I listen to alot of recordings that would not appeal to many people. That's fine. This cd though, this is one of those things that I think a vast number of people would love if they were exposed to it. If you're on the fence about whether or not to get it, just buy it. I think your chances of not enjoying it are very slim.

    5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE.......2002-06-08

This cd is a masterpiece of ethnic music..First of all we have Richard Hagopian here..He is Armenian and he plays the lute here.He has a very diffrent and nice voice..He speaks Turkish in Armenian accent which is very cool in my opinon.Hagopian is a master on Turkish and Armenian folks songs. His repertoire is very large.
Second we have Omer Faruk Tekbilek here..He plays the zurna..
We also have Bulgarian saxophonist Yuri Yunakov in the album..He almost makes his saxophone sing!! in the last track "Siseler".In turksih folk songs clarinet is usually played..I would also expect to hear clarinet in this cd but instead of it Yunakov plays the saxophone but it is ok because saxophone is also a good choice and nice match here.
In fact this cd is a pack of famous musicians..Whom else do we have? Also percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan and musician Ara Dinkjian. He plays the guitar in this album.Dinkjian is also the founder of Night Ark.. In my eyes the musicianship is almost too good to be true in this album..The instruments are played in such a good and exact, precise style; the way they had to be in this kind of music. The recording quality is exceptional as well.In fact when this cd was first released in 1995 it was a bestseller in world music sales for a long time.I accept that as a very normal fact because it is almost impossible to create a bad album with so many talented musicians together..
This cd is a real blend of turkish, armenian, greek and arabic music in my eyes..Any turk, armenian ,greek or arabic person would like the tunes here..The reality is that this kind of music is real ISTANBUL music..I call Istanbul music because once all of those mationalities used to live in Istanbul.Maybe this cd is a testament to those old good days.At least I feel so ..
This album is by Traditional Crossroads which is a great recording company trying to protect the music of Ottoman Empire. They also have other records by Hagopian in their cd catalogue.I would strongly recommend all Hagopian albums under the Traditional Crossroads label. They have recently released new albums in which Hagopian performs(Kef Time Detroit and Kef Time Hartford ).Also Kef Time is a legendary album.I feel grateful to Crossroads for getting these albums out.

      3 out of 5 stars where's the fire?.......2003-08-31

The title sounded good. The other reviewers made this sound unique, but to me it fell flat compared to Taraf de Haidouks, Saban Bajramovic, and Ibro Lolov. I realize it's a different type of gypsy music, but I've heard more exciting Hungarian before too.

5 out of 5 stars my goodness, the singing!.......2002-02-27

Friends of mine lived for a while in Hungary, and they brought me this cassette in the late '80s. It changed the way I think about music -- in particular, the group vocals send me, and the swinging, non-American 4/4 rhythm. Very sparse instrumentation -- not much more than guitar & handclaps, or less -- and not a display of virtuosity, unlike most other eastern European music that's reached my ears here in the States. Not that there's anything wrong with virtuosity. What I love about this album is the group's wonderful spirit of individuality-within-community -- the (by western standards) somewhat rough solo voices of 2 or 3 men and one woman blending together beautifully & sophisticatedly in a nonhystrionic energetic musical vitality. One man sings "vocal bass," which sounds something like the pitch-variable bass drum of the classical Indian tabla. 12 years ago this album blew me away. I still love listening to it -- a musical pick-me-up.
